  • In this video I will show you how to change your shift forks if they are worn out or damaged. Also I will go over shift levers and compare the factory lever to the style that I use and prefer.

    Please consider an engine rebuild series (L head, F head, maybe 6 cylinder as well) I'm sure it'll be popular and helpful for many people out there. In your channel you have taught us everything, from making brake lines, fixing axles, transmission, machine work, etc. to painting and body work. But the one thing missing is a complete guide, on putting engines back together with all it's details and I consider engine work very critical and important. Thank you again for all your content and work.

    • @metalshaperJeep

      The engine work, like this transmission series was not accepted very well by the youtube crowd. I have 4 engines right now being rebuilt but doubt I will film and post any of it. Just isn't worth the time to set up, film, edit, post, and only have a few views. Thanks for watching

    Always love watching your precision work Brain. Could you please do a whole engine rebuild series? You have great videos out there, but some things are missing, specially the putting it back together videos. Your F head rebuild series wasn't popular at first, but now it has many views. I was sad to see you never finished filming putting them back together.

    Thanks for another great tutorial Brian. I enjoy all your content but I'm an old Jeep guy. I'm not a TH-cam expert, by any stretch of the imagination, but I can offer a random thought. I think most regular (non Jeep afficianado) people like to see projects go from before to after in 30 minutes. Maybe try editing some of your older video series into a single 30ish minute vid that shows a before to after with less technical details. Please don't take this as criticism, I love your stuff as-is but I can see why you would like to market to the masses. Thanks again... Glenn

    I find all of your tutorial video's useful... Even when they cover something which does not specifically concern my projects. I enjoyed the video you did a while back where you made a fuel tank for an early willys. I have a 1945 willys MB which is missing a fuel tank. I wonder if you could do the same thing for the 1945 military style tank? I believe the replacement versions are anywhere from $350-$900ish.

    Where do you normally source the NOS shift forks? I'm having a helluva time finding the 1-2 fork and only (2) of the 3-4 forks available on Ebay. I'm going to try calling all the local dealerships and hope that maybe they have some old stuff gathering dust. The coating on my original forks is flaking off/worn through. It's hard to tell from pictures and the "help desk" folks aren't much help, but it seems like the aftermarket forks don't have any coating on them.
    The Kent-Moore tools seem to be drying up online as well...

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I often check old Chevy dealers and they sometimes have forks sitting around from the 70's. Was able to get all three that I showed in the video for $48.00 from a dealer who didn't even know that they had them, but took a look when I gave him the part numbers. There is still a lot of NOS GM parts out there you just have to dig a little bit.

    Ok I have this transmission and the problem I am having is the front input shaft leaks oil so I have put a new bearing in and gasket. Now when I do a thin gasket the transmission will not hardly go into second and it feels like the clutch is not disengaging so I put a thicker gasket on and shifts fine but leaks oil like crazy what is the problem. Help.

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you put a new seal in the bearing retainer? Pull the bearing retainer and check the seal, often times they get hard and brittle. Change the seal with a new one. Install carefully so you don't distort it. That should take care of your leak.

    Hey metalshaper,
    Used your videos to complete my Novak adapter. For some reason when I shift my sleeves on the trans into what should be neutral and spin the input it won’t let them spin free? Any ideas?

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Make sure you are exactly in neutral. Also make sure your blocking rings are free on the synchro hub. They can bind and stick and cause trouble. Take a small screwdriver and make sure the blocking rings are free from the hub. If you followed my videos and did everything correctly you shouldn't have any trouble. Let me know how it goes

      @@metalshaperJeep I will check these things and let you know.
      I moved the sliders between the sincros and the shaft will spin but it feels like it is still in gear somehow. If I shift into 1st gear or any gear for that matter the mainshaft wont spin. Is the blocking ring the one with the "Dogs"?

    • @GingerSquatch94
      @GingerSquatch94 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @metalshaperjeep ,
      Could not have made it this far without your videos. Also after doing some more research I believe blocking ring to 4th gear nearest the input shaft is not letting go of the input shaft. I was thinking of getting some gl4 gear oil and dropping it on that ring I tried the screwdriver but it’s not letting go.

    • @GingerSquatch94
      @GingerSquatch94 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@metalshaperJeep You were spot on! Blocking ring was stuck on the cone not allowing it to spin free. I loosened up the front bearing retainer and it let go. Snugged them back down and we are good to go. Cant thank you enough for putting all the work into these videos. For anyone wondering these videos allowed a person who had never seen the inside of a transmission to be able to successfully rebuild one. Amazing stuff!

    When I checked the thickness of the thrust washer I found that it is thicker than expected, it is .204. I was expecting .197.
    is this the wrong washer?

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you get your new parts, bushings, you will need the later more common style. You should get the proper thrust washer with the new bushings and small parts kit. It will be the correct thickness when you get the new one. I have taken some out a bit thinner and and bit thicker so no worries about the small differences. This is a very common transmission and very high quality parts are out there from a variety of retailers.
