    There was this really cool 93 year old guy who lived across the street from us. He worked for 40 years repairing televisions, installing radios in classic cars etc... . He had this killer tube tester set up in his garage. When he passed away his kids sold it all. I would love to have bought it from them, but unfortunately their greed to sell his stuff fast ruined my chances of even making an offer. There is a lot of potential money in working vintage tubes. I've sold many over the years. Some I had to refund money on because the didn't work but the majority sold really well. Take Care.

    Great video! I wish I saw this a long time ago because we let one of the organ go to waste because no one even wanted on a craigslist for free. LOL. Thanks again for all your great advice!

    -ELECTRONIC ORGANS, AND WHICH ARE THE VITAL INSTRUMENTS TO PRESERVE--
    [ first a little 1 paragraph soapbox peve, and then I will get into the features to seek, etc. I will tell you about ANY model organ you find if you simply respond to this thread by leaving a comment: It's late for me so if it looks like I left off on something it's because I didn't proofread. Believe me, I only intend to make people aware of these great instruments, not to debate the attributes of analog versus digital. If you want that then read some other threads I've been on. So here is that short rant, and then better stuff...
    When I see an Ebay ad in which the body of the ad reads:
    " CAME FROM A WORKING ORGAN"
    This just makes me want to knock sense into these people! It comes as the biggest insult to great engineers and musician-engineers who designed these instruments, and everyone who plays, or is eventually going to want to this particular make/model because an actual working or easily fixable example was blatantly destroyed and sold for parts. Namely it's mediocre-for guitar/ substandard for HIFI tube amplifier.
    You can find my posts all over the TH-cam, The Organ Forum, and even various Guitar and Guitar Amp forums. I played guitar for 20 years before ever playing an organ, and I've built many awesome guitar amps, never once needing to sacrifice an organ to do it. Fact is, organ transformers make for mediocre guitar amps because organs are full frequency instruments and guitar amps are a select mid frequency curve. It's why none of those old Bogen tube PA amps I tried to make sounded good for guitar, even after multiple filtering mods. So to kill an organ simply to get it's tube amp is very sad to witness. I'm a pretty good amp builder. I was fortunate to have roomed with an ace tube amp modifier when I was going to Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) in 84'-86'. He modded amps for Ratt, Billy Squier, Aerosmith, and it was his amp that ended up being Slash's Marshall Head on the Appetite For Destruction album.
    --THE ORGAN IS THE MOST EXPRESSIVE AND SENSITIVE OF ALL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS--
    - The 1970's was a black mark on the electronic organ industry. They made a lot of garbage in the 1970's because of the advent of the EPROM micro chip. Before 1968 ALL ORGAN MANUFACTURES COMPETED IN JUST 3 AREAS, in this order: VOICING TONE, ANIMATION, and CABINETRY. Always manufactures of these 1935-1968 ( a few to 73'ish) organs put tone first, so it is very difficult to find ANY pre-68' organ that doesn't have a good tonality. And of course tone is the heart of any instrument. Any musical instrument with a good tone has had great care taken when it was built and so almost always will have quality materials. These pre-68' organs always had quality hardwood veneer cabinets. I once balked that one of my better organs had plywood under the venner instead of solid hardwood, but actually hardwood warps. Of course it was a high grade multiple layer plywood which succeeded hardwood ( the cheap particle board cabinets didn't arrive until the mid 70's, when not ironically the rest of the organ was cheap, including the tone!
    SO WHY THE SPEECH ABOUT PRE-1968' ORGANS? Because this is about the time when vacuum tube amplifiers stopped being put in organs. Soooo...
    RULE OF THUMB: IF AN ORGAN HAS A TUBE AMP IN IT, IT IS A PRE-68' ORGAN AND WILL MOST SURELY HAVE A VERY PROFESSIONAL TONE. THERE ARE VERY FEW MAKES/MODELS OF ORGANS PRIOR TO 1970' WHICH AREN'T PROFESSIONAL SOUNDING, EASY TO FIX, AND HAVE QUALITY HARDWOOD VENEER CABINETRY NICE ENOUGH TO SIT IN ANY LIVING ROOM.
    HOW TO SPOT IF AN ORGAN IS A VERY GOOD ORGAN OR POSSIBLE SCRAPPING/PARTING OUT ORGAN:
    ---------------------BLACK,WHITE,RED,YELLOW,MAROON/GREY= KEEPER COLORS!--
    ORGANS PRIOR TO AROUND 1970 NEVER HAD MULTI-COLORED TABS ( SWITCHES) THAT DEPARTED FROM THESE 4 BASIC COLORS. ORGANS HAVE 4-FAMILIES OF TONE:and so these four colors correspond. The 1970's organs used many different colors for the switches and tabs, like purple, blue, orange, etc.
    HOWEVER, A GOOD PRE-1970' ORGAN WILL HAVE JUST THESE FOUR COLORS WHICH ARE UNIVERSAL FOR THE FAMILIES THEY REPRESENT:
    ---FOUR COLORS-- ( and BLACK is used for animation, ie. VIBRATO, TREMOLO, REVERB)
    --FLUTE/TIBIA= WHITE (or cream) sometimes embossed with silver/gold or black lettering)
    -DIAPASON= WHITE ( or cream) sometimes embossed with silver/gold or red lettering)
    -STRING= YELLOW TABS
    -REED ( includes brass/horns)= RED
    -----and ANIMATION= BLACK, GREY
    ( note, you will also see a great deal of DARK RED, or MAROON on WURLITZER,LOWREY, and BALDWIN organs of the 1960's. These are great organs, and are usually the SPINET variety of organs ( SPINET ORGAN= 13 pedals and spit keyboards/offset, SMALLER)
    (CONSOLE ORGAN= 25 pedals, two or more 61-key keyboard manuals that are lined up with one another. LARGER)
    ( There are exceptions to this rule for spinet and console organs. For instance, THOMAS TRIANON electronic theater organs have both a longer 61 key manual AND two smaller spinet length keyboards. CONN also had a SPINET THEATRE' ORGAN which had 3 smaller manuals lined up ( see CONN 580 THEATRE ORGAN, is a very good transistor organ)
    So before I bug some of you out so much like a know it all and make you want to respond to me saying organs are junk nobody wants them unless they are Hammond B3's, I will as gently as I can put it, explain to you that there are actually several more makes and models of organs that also deserve special attention for preserving. For once these are gone there will never be another made. And unlike guitars, drums, horns, guitar amps, and even pianos, which do not require the vast skills of several trades of involvement to design and build, along with a parts list that would tally into the thousands of dollars today, these organs will be literally impossible to be reissued later using the same component values, cabinetry, and mechanical components. Agian, once they are gone there will be no more!
    Most people wouldn't have a problem with someone saying that old electric guitars and tube amps need preserved because they are monetarily valuable and there is a continuous demand for them. I agree, but consider that most music these days is leaving the popularity of the electric guitar in the dust. Still, guitar will always have millions who gravitate toward the instrument as players and listeners. I'ts portable, looks cool, and is very versatile. The organ is actually the most expressive of all musical instruments,

    Hi. Great vids and content, my colleague and I watch your stuff in our conference room here in the U.K. Years ago my dad and I had a large non ferrous scrap yard and used to put all vacuum tubes, 'valves' into a small skip. We used to deliver a minimum of about 5 - 600 pounds at a time to a specialist company that ground them down, blew the fabric, glass and ceramics off and took magnetic bits out with magnets. Most of the rest went for adding to iron in the smelting process. This was when all tv's etc. had valves and they had piles of them that had to be processed with diggers. I don't know what they got out of the valves but it must have been valuable because they were in business for years and only packed up when tv's etc. became semi conductor based. They also had some guys who used to sort valves by hand, really quickly, they never said what they were sorting for but it must have paid as this company had new lorries, exc. offices and premises and operated for years. If valves were worth money then it is hard to believe they are not worth anything now especially with the recycling going on now and the dramatic rise in the price of even basic metals. I scrap all of the time as a hobby alongside of our computer business and really like and commend your efforts, I don't collect valves as I don't think that I have even seen one for several years. On our industrial estate no bin, skip or junk is safe from me. It is definitely a bug, I even go into ditches and dismantle abandoned shopping trolleys with a cordless grinder.

      It was a controller chip. The legs were a beautiful dull gloss gold. I'm having my gold processed right now so I don't have a pic for you but man I would LOVE to get more of those. I've just looked at available photo's on line and found it was a cheap vintage Kimball that someone gave to me. Took apart an old bell organ a few months ago. Bought it at GoodWill for 9.99 and got about $150 ±1-2 One thing to keep in mind is to be very gentile with the shell... the wood. Organizations like natos and here catos, organ enthusiasts groups have web sits where you can sell or trade parts. I got $50 for the wood shell. And they paid shipping! Also always be careful of transformers in organs. Big amperage in them and they hold for a long time. Especially organs with fast start.

    I think the metal strips you found may be nickle plated material. Nickle is often applied in an area where durability is needed on the cheap such as the moving parts of the keyboard. The lack of darkening from tarnish is a tad odd though as Nickle does tarnish kinda like silver just not as bad. Could also be Magnesium which is used in other electronic devices like laptops and cellphones. Magnesium is shiny, doesn't really tarnish, and is flexible in strip form.

    The S6 doesn't have a tonewheel generator so that's why there's no silver strips in this one. Look at those thin coppery looking contact strips that are briefly shown at 5:50. They look the same as the ones on the tonewheel models and if they are, they have a small bit of something exotic (palladium or something) at the tip.

      Yup, the thing is that hardly anyone want them anymore. I see them on craigslist for months and months even when they are for free. SO rather than having them end up in a landfill, I grab them, try to take them apart carefully and sell the parts on ebay. If they don't work at least its getting recycled not trashed.

      @MegaGuitarplayer92 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I wouldn’t do it to an m3 if you find one that would be really sad unless the tonewheels are completely trashed which is rare cause they’re built like a tank if you find m3s you could mod them with foldback and set it up for a Leslie and sell them for a decent amount

  • @LHUPA
    @LHUPA 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    As I notice, this organ is an Hammond tube organ in the end of 40's and debut of 50's era and I'm sure that such organs have full potential for collecting, or sell them for parts if they're not serviceable, working! I'm not a "scrapper" and I don't like to scrap! But I'm a technician with DIY passion with recycled, used or brand new parts as you have to build a lot of gizmos for the passion of it! So, I use the same material by "cannibalizing" it in a myriad of things! You have very clean explicative videos in HD!

    • @wesgarland
      @wesgarland 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LHUPA Not this model....there is more supply than demand in most locales, and getting them working properly again can be a serious challenge. They use 12 vacuum tube oscillators whose frequencies are divided again and again to produce the right notes in the right octaves. The paper/wax capacitors in the oscillators have all drifted badly, putting the organ so far out that you can't tune it with the factory adjustment. Replacing all the caps will make it tuneable again, but getting it tuned can be quite a challenge. Then, when you're done and have put $100-$200 worth of parts (assuming no or few bad tubes) and 30+ hours of labour into the thing, you get to sell it for $50-$100....Non-working chord organs are almost impossible to give away. The main reason, BTW, is that even working right they sound like crap.
      The tonewheel models, on the other hand, should not be scrapped unless they have coloured tabs (and even that's debatable). Tonewheel models start at about 250 lbs and have electric motors in them.
