  • One of the more popular summer time items found for scrap are bikes of all sizes. Relatively quick breakdown, and some bikes are worth thousands of dollars! Is yours? Watch and find out!

    Another quick way to identify aluminum is that the weld is normally larger. I normally throw them ally bikes in with the irony ally.

    Bolt cutters are much quicker on cutting the spokes on the rims. I have 6 bikes sitting up back in my pile, and was just planning on pulling the tubes and tires to sell to a local bike shop, pull any aluminum rims, and maybe any other small good parts, and scrap the rest. Never thought of them having aluminum frames, even though my bike is!

    the spokes on the wheels are stainless steel unless its a cervelo or police edition bike. also to remove the spokes you can sometime use a flathead screwdriver to unscrew the tension nut from the inside or use a small wrench to untighten the tension nut from the outside. theres also bikes made of carbon fiber but they will be very expensive(cannondale, cervelo, marin, khs, rocky mountain) the rims are always aluminum alloy or steel if its painted its always steel if its shiny use a magnet.

      Thanks for watching! Great point! There are many types of bike frames, however carbon does not have a scrap value. Certainly a resale value which is why I have that text right after the title about selling. Thanks!

    Another great video Moose. I wish scrapping was so easy here in England - its licensed to the hilt here now. I think in order to stop the sell, sell, sell comments you may have to start your opening with a vocal explanation rather than rely on people to actually read the comments, which obviously some don't.
    Suggestions for scrapping? Some dude over here scrapped a Boeing 737 or 747 (I think - it was a big jumbo type plane anyway). He (and 3 creative designers) bought it for £25k (scrap value) and used almost everything in it to make something else which they sold. I wish I could remember the name of the programme - worth a watch.
    Good luck on your next scrapping venture. Look forward to the video.
    Po

      As always thanks! It is very refreshing to hear from someone with an open and attentive mind! Lets see how many people I can upset with that one! lol

      It's over an hour long. Personally I wasn't keen on most of the stuff they made, a bit arty farty and overpriced for me. I did like the office pod they made out of the body.

    so if the bike is really old will it still possibly have some titanium? If so how can I tell if say it's hard to find out info about it (because of age or worn off info on label). Maybe I can do some tests at home to see? Also how would I sell the titanium (my yard doesn't take it). Thanks a bunch.

      TheNewport2009 I am not sure when they atarted using titanium in bikes. I am pretty sure it would only be in road bikes, not kids bikes. If the frame is titanium, you would be best selling it on ebay or to a local bike shop. You will get WAY more than scrap for it. If there are no clear markings on it for brand or model then the next best suggestion I could give you be to take it to a good repair shop. They would be able to tell you what it is and what its worth. BEst of luck to you!

    As someone who works with bikes, I just wanted to mention that the spokes in the wheels are under tension. How much depends on the wheel, and can even vary from spoke to spoke within the wheel, but if it's tight enough, cutting the spoke can be like cutting a taut, rubber band and, if the tyre is removed, the spoke can come shooting out of the rim with enough force to do some damage if it got you in the eye. Cutting the spokes close to the rim like you do in the vid here might prevent this, but I don't know. You'res afe if you cut the spokes the tyre still on as the spokes can't fly out with the tyre in the way.
    On any wheel of decent quality, the spokes will be non-magnetic stainless, the nipples (the tension nuts that screw the spokes into the rim) will be plated brass. If the rim is aluminium it will be extruded aluminium.

    Suggestion: Take the wheel off with with a tire removal tool you get at a bike shop or online for a buck or two. It's like a small shoe horn. First go all around one side of the wheel, then the other. Easy, breezy, beautiful covergirl.

    I know it's sevenish years ago but that top answer, a cordless screwdriver, as the most important tool is dead wrong. A cordless screwdriver, drill/driver, drill is a luxury. It's not the most important or a can't do without tool. The most important tool is a good old fashioned set of screwdrivers. Screwguns of whatever shape and style run out of juice at inconvenient times and no matter how long of a bit you get there's too many places you just can't reach with them. Don't get me wrong I use my impact driver as often as possible but there are awful lot of tight spaces and deep holes that I can't to even with 6" long bits.

      I am very sorry to hear that. That is a horrible thing to have happened to you. It is unfortunate that there are people out there like that but we can't let the few bad ones detract from all of the good ones. Scrappers save millions of tons of emissions yearly by recycling. We help to keep landfills a little less full, help prevent heavy metals from getting into water supplies, and help the economy by helping companies get cheaper metals as well as spending the money we make from scrapping.

      Hi and thanks for watching! I appreciate all comments however I feel you are missing the point of these videos. Right after the title, for several seconds there is a rolling screen telling people to sell sell sell if it works! These videos are not an attempt to tell people that they should scrap everything they see. Its a bideo to first open their eyes to the possibility that these items are more than scrap. However, if you are going to scrap it, this is how and what you find. I guess I am confused as to how you missed that and how if you fear scrappers so much....why are you watching a scrapping video? Thank you anyway for watching, and yes I repeat that I DO agree with you that items should be sold. For this bike, the bearings in the pedals were gone. The frame is being sold, and the wheels were bent. Sorry if I have offended you. Take care.

    • @elizabethratnik2621
      @elizabethratnik2621 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moose Scrapper bent wheels are no good, if I had bought that bike as-is on ebay for $200 with the bent wheel, I would have been pissed, especially if the pic taken was at the angle in the pic shown when it was on your truck. In addition to that, in order to ship whole bikes like that without breaking them down to place in a box, you'll need to personally hire a trucker to ship it off to the customer who's doing the same for other people. I'm in LA, so to ship a $200 bike for 2 to 3 grand just doesn't make sense anyway, it's better to sell all the individual parts you can and scrap the rest.

      ur responding 2 my comment??? guess i missed the point u wanted 2 show em multiple types of bikes. im confused as to where ur getting that i fear scrappers so much lol?

    • @elizabethratnik2621
      @elizabethratnik2621 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Syph1l1S its not easy to get every last detail of a bike in a video like this that accurately shows everything that could be wrong with a bike that'll keep it from functioning properly, the bearings in the pedals and bent wheels are two of those things, the bearings in the pedals being the biggest biggie on both accounts.
      The purpose of these videos is to show you what to look for and what to generally expect when scrapping certain items and yes, I saw the end of the vid where Moose placed tge text saying you should sell working parts as working parts and scrap the rest if you intend to do this for a full time income or as a second income, especially if you intend to fully rely on this income as full time income, me on the other hand, I enjoy handling metal and don't need the money, so I sell working parts for others' sake and make ingots with the rest of it for my collection, especially the fingerboard gold from junk electronics, both old and relatively new. One of these days, I'm gonna do a video of my entire stack of scrap metal ingot.
