Philip Bloom I can confirm the Hagibis in fact works perfectly with an aptX Low Latency headset. Avantree pairs well together just testing it out now & impressed with results!
Very practical topic, thank you for making this contect. 3 years has gone since this video, Caleb, have you found some better transmitter recently? New updated video would be nice one as this is still very relevant topic.
Do you know what would be ever better? If camera manufacturers that sell those $2K+ cameras would just put that small BT chip with aptX (that cost less than $5 on aliexpress) inside and simply allow users to monitor audio wirelessly by directly connecting to the camera. I mean, they could even go crazy and have like a delay adjustment in the menu for those with BT headphones without low latency mode. That way they won't even need to waste space for that pesky 3.5mm headphone jack for monitoring (which they don't bother to put into most cameras anyway), and also they would be able to put this feature even in very compact bodies like Sony RX100 lineup. Imaging living in that world! Oh, one can only hope… In any case, Caleb, thanks for the video!
Do you know why? Because monitor headphones are called monitors not headphone for a reason. First of all latency, bluetooth is digital, encoding and decoding take time. Second is digital, bluetooth connection is slow and no way match the frequency range and transmitting rate of analog, thus wont fully represent the full spectrum of the audio recorded thus not monitoring any more. Bluetooth 5.0 will certainly bring new players to the table but 5.0 is relatively new so it takes time.
Nguyễn Anh Quân Don’t want to be too harsh, but are you one of those people who thinks vinyl is superior and gold plated hdmi cables are a must have? Dude, even 15+yo ancient BT2.0 can transmit at the rates of 2Mb/s! @@Frytech Dude, first of all, consumer technology is trickled down from professional technology. I'll talk from consumer perspective. A7SII XAVC codec record audio at 48khz 16bit which is approximately 1.5mbps. APTX LL codec data rate is 420kbps, which is one third the recording rate, so listening to the audio transmitted via APTX LL codec you are actually listening to one third of what being recorded. Do you want to listen to a record thinking yes everything is fine only later to realize there are some weird sound that had been filtered out by the encoding and decoding process? Beside, APTX LL codec is licensed by Qualcolmn, require both transmitter and receiver to be certified to work. Do you want to pay more money for the camera then pay more money for a headphone to use it? How many people use bluetooth headphone? How many of them are APTX LL compatible? Airpods are not APTX LL compatible I must remind you. They have latency around 120ms, look it up if you dont believe me. Moreover, BT2.0 transmits at the rate of 0.7Mbps, bluetooth 4.2 transmits @ 1Mbps, BT5 transmits @ 2Mbps so get your fact straight. Given your past findings testing HDMI monitors and such, it's possible the headphone jack on the camera is adding to latency where the MixPre-3 doesn't? This was literally a feature on old professional analogue tape recorders used on film shoots, and it's exactly how traditional film sound recordists would monitor the audio. I imagine the newer digital equivalents have a similar feature. I'm personally sold on the cheapest version for exactly that reason.

Great video! They do sell wireless headphones and dongles which use the 2.4 ghz wireless signal instead of bluetooth. I found that those have almost no latency and are good for monitoring. But in the end i just went back to wired headphones because its just one less set of devices you have to charge and maintain lol
Great video! I’m so tired of all the cords so this is perfect! Where can I find the the monopod the camera is sitting on in the video! I love it. Thanks for keeping us on the cutting edge😘
Thank you for the sharing. Great video as usual. And I just wanna share my way to get wireless audio monitoring. I use my Rode Wireless Go as T&R because it’s nearly no delay and connection is pretty good. The best part is that I need no extra expense to get this function as I’ve already owned it. And also I can use all of my lovely monitoring headphone or earphones with it. Hope this helps. Lol
I think the Taotronics device would be best bang for buck. The issue was that your headphones don't support APTX Low Latency, which is the real reason the combo pairs do much better.
Hey Caleb, the foxnovo 32$ option actually sounded like it was really low latency, like much better than the 4 frame latency before it. Was the audio edited properly? I am curious because compared to the rest the 32$ option with near no latency sounds like a fantastic bargain
Great video! Thanks. I like also the small tripod on the right 😂 can you tell me the model? I am trying to find something small but strong for slider on table
I bought a similar rx/tx kit for my C200 a few months ago. So nice, not to have the cable hanging around. Some latency, but for the price, I feel that it’s worth it 😀
I shoot out of the back of my 4x4 in remote places and HATE dragging my headphone cord everywhere. I think the HT4189 might be the perfect solution for me because I think I can power it off my AndyCine A6, yes? I shoot with the Fuji XH1 and need the monitor to see myself so I have that giant battery just sitting there!
This is so exciting! Here's a stupid question but could you use a headphone splitter output from the camera to multiple bluetooth devices to theoretically have a producer and cam operator both listening on their own headphones?
What the transmitter and receiver does is they encode the analog signal, transmit it then decode it again, this introduce latency and require computing power. Do you expect a 400$ PC to encode a video faster than a 5000$? So 4$ transmitter is not the best choice here.
Amazing fix. August 2020 here wondering if those Avantree pucks are still the top of the line if I want to keep using my Sony headphones, or if there's something new.
Great video, thanks :) Would love to see a similar test for wireless mic systems (eg. Rode Wireless Go, Comica BoomX-U, etc) Especially since they can also be used as a makeshift wireless headphone link!
I've tested latency with wireless LAVs if you want to know, as it might apply to headphones to. So the thing to consider is also the DISTANCE. It's very important. So when you have an Audio Cable, electrons move pretty close to the speed of light, so you'll get that audio almost instantly even if you have a 60 foot cable in between the source and your ears/recorder. However, I was very intrigued to find out what the Speed of Wireless is (as there is very little info online), and after some calculation I found that it is Double the Speed of Sound, meaning that a person talking into a LAV far away will reach the camera 2x Quicker than his voice propagating through the air and into a Shotgun Mic mounted on the camera. But wait, there's more... Although that's the actual speed when the signal is sent, it still needs to process that sending and receiving (it doesn't happen instantly), and I measured this LAG as being equivalent to about 1m (3 feet) of sound speed. So therefore, to give some examples, here's how the sound travels to your camera/recorder (either via air with the speed of sound or via Wireless + Lag) - Subject at 1m Wireless: 1m LAG + 0.5m Transmission - Subject at 1m Shotgun: 0 Lag + 1m Propagation -> So the Wireless is actually behind the Shotgun on the Cam - Subject at 2m Wireless: 1m LAG + 1m Transmission - Subject at 2m Shotgun: 0 Lag + 2m Propagation -> Here they are equal. They should sync up perfectly. - Subject at 3m Wireless: 1m LAG + 1.5m Transmission - Subject at 3m Shotgun: 0 LAG +3m Propagation -> And now the Wireless will get to your cam/recorder quicker. And so on, you get the idea. That's the speed I got, of course LAG may be different depending on the product's internal chip. From what I see in your video 1 Frame of Latency = 10m in Sound Speed. So there will be a perfect Sync in your Brain if you move 10m away from the action. As for the sub-frame LAG, I say it's getting closer to that Wireless quality.
What someone else came up with was using the Rode wireless Go but pluging TX unit into the cam and RX unit into a set of headphones. It solves the BT latency issues, I gather.
Ayyy do a video for wireless HDMI transmitters? Something HDMI to micro HDMI for monitors? Just did a wedding last night wrapping a monitor HDMI cable around the lens to the camera. Such a hassle if needing to change lenses or anything really
As a video shooter, I want to know if I am recording low frequency wind rumble and thus want the monitoring system that has the best audio quality. You didnt even mention audio quality.
Awesome! I'm getting this transmitter set. Caleb, did you do any testing with range/ interference? Or is it a non issue because they are all fairly robust and your expecting line of sight to your audio source? 🤔
Thank you for this. I've been looking for a solution for a while and didn't want to buy a bunch of crap before finding something that really works. (I did that with lav mics.)
Hello Caleb! Great video. Where did you get that short extension plug for your headphones? I'm using an ATH M50x. I plan to buy that 2 round one you recommended using your link. Thanks!
Great review - so after watching I decided on the TaoTronics 2-in-1 & ordered - question ; if the other end does NOT support aptX will these still work? I believe YES - just found out from the Apple Community board that iphones (and apple in general ) do NOT support aptX because they have to pay high licensing fees to Qualcomm - and Apple, despite being rich, never wants to share in paying anyone royalties - so in several hours I will see if I can use these TaoTronics 2-in-1 with a bluetooth lapel mic, transmitting to this received connected to my Canon XF-400 video camera - I usually shoot on-location with VERY loud noise background so want to capture my commentary audio ;)
Hey Caleb, great comparison. Very well done. Don't think you've done this yet, but how about a comparison of sd card backup devices, such as the gnarbox, WD My Passport wireless pro, WD my passport wireless ssd, and maybe a raspberry pi 4 version build (I'm considering building one)?
holsteincowboy usually sell or give to friends. In this case, I’ll probably covert some old boom boxes and radios to Bluetooth speakers as gifts. Always a big hit!
Did you consider using the new Rode wireless mic kit as the transmitter/receiver? I wonder how the latency is if you took a 3.5mm out from the camera and into the transmitter and then ran the receiver into your headphones.
Great review! Thanks for your work on this. Any time you have AtoD DtoA conversions, there will be latency. Then add wireless. Yikes. No way around it. Oh, there is... .... Wires. ;)
I picked up that Taotronics guy a couple weeks ago so I could keep an ear on a (definitely amateur) boom operator. it might end up getting a permanent place in my bag when I'm one-man-banding interviews and trying to avoid getting tangled.
Great video!! I think I like the Taotronics one best, for it's size and pretty low latency comparatively, 4 frames is not bad. I also for my own preference, don't like needing the specific headphones option nor the dual puck being it's just one more thing you have to contend with, but the latency of course is really good great review and comparison!!
so ..bottom line is we still dont have a solution for using wireless headphones with a camera ... i hope you got to take all these back as thats a lot of money to shell out for 1 video... thanks for trying this out for us.. love your channel

Great video! They do sell wireless headphones and dongles which use the 2.4 ghz wireless signal instead of bluetooth. I found that those have almost no latency and are good for monitoring. But in the end i just went back to wired headphones because its just one less set of devices you have to charge and maintain lol
green tokyo I’ll have to look into those!
Just yesterday I was searching for the very same thing. Thanks for doing all the leg work!
Great video. You can also try your Rode Wireless Go in reverse. See what that latency is like maybe?
That should work- I was able to use it as a guitar wireless transmitter, and any latency would kill that.
Lol
Be nice if these cameras we spend thousands of dollars on would just output a bluetooth audio signal built-in?
I think the Taotronics device would be best bang for buck. The issue was that your headphones don't support APTX Low Latency, which is the real reason the combo pairs do much better.
If you’re planning to make a follow up video for this. Please include the dji mic 2 paired with a sony a7 iv.
A lot of VMOUNT batteries have a usb socket, so some of these options are fine when using bigger rigs. Thanks for the info !
If you want a cheap wireless option with no delay, an FM transmitter to FM receiver (pocket radio) works great.
Hey Caleb, the foxnovo 32$ option actually sounded like it was really low latency, like much better than the 4 frame latency before it. Was the audio edited properly? I am curious because compared to the rest the 32$ option with near no latency sounds like a fantastic bargain
I second this!
I also thought that that sounded way less than the reported latency. Better than the reported 4 frames before and the 5 frames after.
Great video! Thanks. I like also the small tripod on the right 😂 can you tell me the model? I am trying to find something small but strong for slider on table
Was literally thinking about getting one of these transmitters today! Thanks Caleb!
I own those Avantree Pucks and they have been doing a sterling job. Just keep forgetting to charge the buggers.
I bought a similar rx/tx kit for my C200 a few months ago. So nice, not to have the cable hanging around. Some latency, but for the price, I feel that it’s worth it 😀
Really awesome idea, am looking at buying this shortly. Would love to see a video on wireless low latency 4K HDMI!
Hey Caleb I’m sure you’ve done this before. But how do you monitor audio with only a headphone jack.
Was looking for a one man shooter monitoring option - nice! Will definitely look some more, but a great review! Well presented.
Can you please tell me what's that little tripod the Sony camera is being mounted on? Thanks!
I believe it comes together with a monopod of some kind not sure of the name
I'd I'm not mistaken, it's the foot of ifootage cobra

Great video, I was wondering if the Avantree aptX Low Latency Transmitter and Receiver Set might make a low cost radio mic?
This is so exciting! Here's a stupid question but could you use a headphone splitter output from the camera to multiple bluetooth devices to theoretically have a producer and cam operator both listening on their own headphones?
I've actually just received some Bluetooth transmitters from Ali express, $4 per piece, lots of latency unfortunately!
What the transmitter and receiver does is they encode the analog signal, transmit it then decode it again, this introduce latency and require computing power. Do you expect a 400$ PC to encode a video faster than a 5000$? So 4$ transmitter is not the best choice here.
Literally purchased a setup like this last week... 😂
I actually paired Airpods with the Taotronics for audio monitoring for weddings but I'm limited to around 33ft
Awesome video, you should do a test of a bunch of wireless transmitter/recievers for lav mics for a video that would be so helpful to people!
Another great video as always! How did you like the quality of the Evantree BT headphones?
I was wondering the same thing!
So therefore, to give some examples, here's how the sound travels to your camera/recorder (either via air with the speed of sound or via Wireless + Lag)
- Subject at 1m Wireless: 1m LAG + 0.5m Transmission
- Subject at 1m Shotgun: 0 Lag + 1m Propagation -> So the Wireless is actually behind the Shotgun on the Cam
- Subject at 2m Wireless: 1m LAG + 1m Transmission
- Subject at 2m Shotgun: 0 Lag + 2m Propagation -> Here they are equal. They should sync up perfectly.
- Subject at 3m Wireless: 1m LAG + 1.5m Transmission
- Subject at 3m Shotgun: 0 LAG +3m Propagation -> And now the Wireless will get to your cam/recorder quicker.
Upvote this man right here! Thanks for sharing your work!
Kudos for your research. Thank you for sharing! Have a happy 2022!
Hi there, great options, but I was wondering what's with the interference? Did you test them somewhere else? Thanks in advance for reply!
What someone else came up with was using the Rode wireless Go but pluging TX unit into the cam and RX unit into a set of headphones. It solves the BT latency issues, I gather.
Thanks! Brilliant! What about the Rode wireless Go hack and latency there ?
Ayyy do a video for wireless HDMI transmitters? Something HDMI to micro HDMI for monitors? Just did a wedding last night wrapping a monitor HDMI cable around the lens to the camera. Such a hassle if needing to change lenses or anything really
Do the wireless headphones or transmitter interfere with wireless mics at all?
As a video shooter, I want to know if I am recording low frequency wind rumble and thus want the monitoring system that has the best audio quality. You didnt even mention audio quality.
Thorough run-through. Thanks, Caleb!
I have been waiting for this video sooo long!
Thank you a lot!
Corridor Crew need to see this!
Love your channel bro! Quality keeps getting better each video. What's the name of that tripod head on your ifootage mini tripod bro ? Anyone know ?
Awesome! I'm getting this transmitter set.
Caleb, did you do any testing with range/ interference?
Or is it a non issue because they are all fairly robust and your expecting line of sight to your audio source? 🤔
Wait are the headphones bluetooth?
Would you consider reviewing the Avantree Sky Ace for this purpose? It's a 3.5mm wireless headphone originally designed for flights.
Thank you! I will buy one of them! Was looking for this long time...
Thank you for this. I've been looking for a solution for a while and didn't want to buy a bunch of crap before finding something that really works. (I did that with lav mics.)
Would be nice to have a menu here as well :)
It would help if you used terms more specific than "this little guy" so we know where to find and buy them.
Timely video for me as I'm in the market for this very thing! Thank you so much for your reviews. You have made my choice much more simple.
Do you re-pack all that stuff and return. It for a refund or throw them in a drawer ? Just curious
holsteincowboy usually sell or give to friends.
I also for my own preference, don't like needing the specific headphones option nor the dual puck being it's just one more thing you have to contend with, but the latency of course is really good great review and comparison!!
nice review man, super keen for this tech any little bit of freedom from wires is great and this has saved some dollars doing test so much appreciated
Dude, the guys in the picture of the box of the Avantree Prive are the same guys from the meme!!!!!!
so ..bottom line is we still dont have a solution for using wireless headphones with a camera ... i hope you got to take all these back as thats a lot of money to shell out for 1 video... thanks for trying this out for us.. love your channel
