The dowel pins are there to prevent things from shifting. You WILL have problems if you dont use them, its not if but when. Thats the reason for the dowel pin conversion on LS-Vtec conversions.
the b16 gasket for the b16 head we used for my brothers b20z2 vtec conversion fit and when we laid the oem gasket down on the block at tdc the gasket for the b16 fit the b20 cylinders and didnt hit the pistons fit perfect. so yeah your old vid helped on that one and it worked for a while until his lma started messing up.
The dowels are there to keep everything perfectly Square.. one example would be your timing chain
