American here. A few years ago, my parents built a new home on a 5 acre lot. They only mow about one acre of grass, while the rest is field grass for their horses. My dad, brothers and I (I'm a triplet) planted a "buffer zone" of wildflowers between the lawn and field grass (about 5 to 8 feet wide). It took a couple of years to take root, but now keeps most of the weeds out.
Yes, I could watch machinery doing its job, endlessly, especially by drone!
Good to know! Glad you enjoyed it!
I would love machinery (John or Bobby) shots. 🤩🤩
@@TheYardGeekwhat size Honda trimmer is that you’ve got, it looks like a big one.
Hi, Mitch. I am NOT a farmer, but maybe the next time, you have to use Johnny, you could go around the field in the same way a zamboni driver goes around the ice rink.
That's a good idea! 😄
When you are tilling, start in the middle of the area and do straight lines up and down. Don't worry abouting the headlands, do them last.
When you till in the weeds line that you are basically planting all the seeds of the plants you don't want. So once you turn the soil black you would want to apply a pre emergent to keep those seeds from turning back into plants
Love your content Mitch! I think we'd all really love the tractor time-lapse content, it was super satisfying in this vid
Glad you enjoyed it!!
I can't believe you, you always upload your detail geek video then work on your yard damn you're just amazing
He's using his time to the maximum, it's incredibly impressive.
It’s a major grind that’s for sure 😄
Cardboard and mulch will help those trees massively. Keeps the weeds down and as mulch breaks down, feeds the trees.
Yes, I would love to watch videos of farm tasks and machinery!
I really love these videos. I think edging out a perimeter and doing simple up down lines (long ways) would be the most efficient way to use the bobcat. No backtracking because you'll end outside on the perimeter
That intro is totally show worthy and got me hyped! Awesome production quality! Also that Badger is SOOOO cute!
Haha thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
To minimize the need for sharp turns when tilling with a compact tractor and a tiller that is, you could use several strategies. Such as creating headlands at the ends of rows provides extra space for wider, sweeping turns. Following the land's natural contours with curved or contour plowing reduces the need for tight turns, and using a circular or spiral pattern allows continuous operation without sharp U-turns. Performing three-point turns instead of sharp U-turns can also help, as can tilling in staggered rows to reduce the frequency and severity of turns. Additionally, maintaining clear field edges ensures more room for maneuvering. Implementing these strategies can reduce equipment strain and make tilling more efficient.
Ask and you shall receive! Hey Mitch, im a local agronomist in Saskatchewan and i have some tips for tilling that area. First, don't do harsh turns with the implement in the ground. Its very hard on the equipment and the 3point hitch.
Proper procedure is to do 2 or 3 "headlands" or border which will be your turning area. Pick a spot on the horizon and draw a staight line with the tiller across the whole area. That will be your guide to follow back and forth for the entire field. At the end of the line, pick up the implement, turn around, line up and lower the implement once you are going. Try to raise and lower the implement while the vehicle is in motion to minimize wear and tear on tines in tiller.
Hope this helps!
Definitely does! Thank you! 😊
That tractor was like the Zamboni of the farm
A good commercial for Palm Springs California!
Loving this new channel! As a kid, I was fascinated by my grandpa harvesting wheat and loved watching him go up & down the fields. Yes, to videos watching you mow your property or weed whack or anything else.😊
You bet love to see more of the yard it's going to be beautiful.
I’d love longer videos personally I’m instantly clicking on these videos mate, there quality just to watch and take your mind off things, it’s rather calming watching the tractor tbf haha, and super satisfying when you’re finished, keep it up mate 🎉
That would cool to watch a full length tractor episode
8:54 the badger peeking out to approve your yard work. Still laughing.
The Badger is probably plott'g Revenge as he did take out his family if I recall?
Geek might hv 2 plant mini dynamite outside borders of his property like Caddyshack😂
@@elizabethannfarrow1971 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Do you have plans to grow beans along with the corn and pumpkins? Three Sisters will make each other happy 😉
Ah three sisters planting learned about them ages ago
1:22 it's such a funny world that we're living in; meanwhile, other municipalities call out a no mow May (to give butterflies and other insects a home.)
Go in straight lines whenever possible, make some headlands and just go back and forth.
Second comment, just wanted to simplify without editing my other one
Splint the tree up with tape and popsicle sticks if it's broken, doing that will save the tree and any limbs that break can be mended back using the same method. It also works for splicing different plants and trees together for unique fruits or colors or different variations of flowers
For tilling, I recommend checking Zamboni patterns for the most effective. Usually the most common, especially if your entrance is centred on the fence line, you start off slightly off center down the middle, then make a half loop towards the opposite side. Then you continue to do half loops, moving across one width at a time. So that way on the last lap you should end up with a single strip down the middle straight through your gate and your loops should stay the same size the entire time.
Good idea!
When you are making your first pass instead of going all the way around cut the field in half with a middle pass and just work both sides so there is no super tight turns
Hi Mitch ❤❤❤❤ have a wonderful weekend
Yes I want to see those videos. Any video you make I love watching.
7:10 I would totally watch a video of this with this cool, chilled out music
I would love to see you just do work with the tractor! Love the tree line! That will be cool when it’s done!
Yes longer videos would be great
These videos remind me of when I used to binge watch how it's made. So interesting and so satisfying.
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying them!
@@TheYardGeek Oh yes, definitely. Please keep them coming. It's certainly fueling my desire to explore the country and maybe even move to another province eventually.
I am totally loving the eco buffer. That looks great. I can understand the mess with the weed debris and the shorts, but I still loved it. Reminds me of the old days when you did your detailing in shorts and a t shirt. I am so happy that the joins did not leak. You should be VERY proud of all that work. I love the drone footage of you tilling up the yard with Johnny. I could actually watch that for a whole video. You are so well concentrated on how to get the whole area cleaned up. We used to start by driving into the middle and working our way out so we got all the weeds, but your plan of outside to inside did an amazing and thorough job. Corn, pumpkins, berries, and a plethora of beautiful baby trees. I was worried the hot tub was going to tip or swing too far, but it all worked out. You and Johnny are a great combo in the snow. Thanks for putting all this footage together for us and explaining all the work. I just love these videos. You are an amazing man. 💜
Hey, Joel, glad you are here. I can't believe how Mitch is useful and very hard-working the weeds peeling off everywhere, a blessing to grow a beautiful fruit garden. Have a wonderful weekend. 😊
@@cynthiahopkins7090 I am so happy to see you here Cynthia. Yes, Mitch will sure have a good harvest of great fruits and veggies. Maybe He will invite us to carve pumpkins in the fall. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey Joel! Yep the weed whacking in shorts wasn't planned haha....I wasn't living out there and didn't have pants with me. Oh well 😄 To be honest I didn't really plan out my approach for tilling before I started....and realized about halfway through that there HAD to be a better way to do it lol. Sounds like the zamboni pattern might be a good option to try! Appreciate the kind words Joel! Have a great weekend!!
Anything machinery related from you is always very fun to watch, I would love more videos like that.
Noted!
Seems relaxing to have videos of the tractor driving around.
This is such a cool project and it's actually teaching me a lot too!
Glad you enjoy it!
Dude you are just a jack of all trades, and it's amazing.
Thank you!
4:53 Hey Mitch, if you have a lot of land where weeds are getting out of control, i sugest buying a gasoline field mower (not the mini tractor version) , some of them are convertibles and can be attached to garden tillers (if they have this option) , it makes cutting a large area of grass easy and quick and you can enjoy having that green field instead of tilling it with the tractor. Also you can use herbicide, only after you cut the grass, but it turns it into a yellow-ish color and will make the grass die and prone to getting caught on fire, also i don't know how safe it is if you are planning to plant vegetables where herbicide was sprayed. You know your acreage the best and you can decide what suits you
Hi Mitch, will you be doing a tour of your new house. Looks beautiful.
Just found this channel and wish it was 10 years old so I could watch all vídeos and see the project done!
I'll have to wait years from now to see those trees 😅
I am glad that you had fun working out to remove the weeds from the leaves. The plantings survive growth for some pumpkins and other fruits. Congratulations on your job. Wow!! Your yard still looks good and has improved. Thank you for updating. 🏡🎃👏👍🚜
Truly a great job of transforming this property into something significant and purposeful. I am impressed so much.
@@joelbuchanan471 😂 I wish that was what you said. I believe that his harvesting has a huge garden and fruits. Mitch is optimistic that the veggies garden will be excellent health foods. 🍒🍒🍓🍎🥕🥒
Congratulations on your accomplishments Mitch!
Loved the video especially since you included seasonal clips. I loved the tractor video from last year and found it extremely relaxing. If you do another one, I will definitely watch it.
Thank you! And good to know!
As a crane operator, that is how we normally fly them. Every operator has their own preference though. I didn’t like to see the twists in the rigging but hey it made it onto the trailer so it worked out. Loving this house “build series”!
I think I'd enjoy driving the tractor too
very cool video! nice advancement on the growth and the setting of the lines for watering. we live on 1.6 of an acre. we have a drag to clean the yard of weeds. I start in a wide circle but at about 1/3 in, I start going across, criss cross and reverse in design. Not only does it help to pull up weeds in better fashion but alleviated the path of going tighter and tighter. I find this so relaxing to do. We now have crusher fine all over the yard so no more dragging but still maintaining for weeds. and wow!!! that badger is huge!!
Hello Mitch . Like your style. Do it right and it always worth it in the long run. BTW
Beautiful home . Congratulations much deserved. Take care my friend that l’ve never met.
Thank you!
Yes I would like to see machinery asmr videos that'll be amazing to watch in between the bigger videos. Please make those in the future.❤🙏
Noted!
Draw a circle with half size width, start from the edge, slightly move your circle to your left or right. Draw circles of same size.
Try a soil sterilant for the trouble weeds. I think its oil based. The soil recovers in a year but it really knocks down those tough patches.
All farmers have to back up. Nice video.
Thanks for the tip!
Can’t wait to see the final product of your yard!
Me too! 😄
More machine work! More yard videos in general!
I love these episodes so much! Really looking forward to the next one! Amazing work!
Glad you like them!
I love the view from above
You got to try using a tilt-shift effect on the heavy equipment time lapses. It would look pretty cool. Enjoying your content as usual!
You could always try the zamboni route while tilling
Make your 3rd or 4th pass go down the middle of the field. Then mow an oval that marches across the field, each loop staying the same size and the middle strip getting wider and wider. Eliminates navigating smaller and smaller ovals.
I really enjoy watching the yard geek, that drone vids are epic ❤
Glad you like them!
I didn't even notice u made an new channel until yesterday and of course I watched all the videos before then one
try running your tiller in the pattern a zamboni does the hockey rink. Around the outside and then up the middle.
Good idea!
When my husband was a young boy, he somehow broke a pine sapling which his mother cherished (it had been a gift from someone special). He panicked and grabbed a roll of Scotch tape and wrapped a ton of tape around the break. The tree survived and flourished according to family legend, and it was a tall tree when they moved away a decade later. Try that with your little broken sapling. What have you got to lose?
You can get a finishing mower to pull behind your tractor. They come in various widths. You won’t want to always till to control weeds and if you seed grass, it’ll make short work of mowing.
For the tractor you could do like a zamboni on an ice rink
Good idea!
I just bought a new build on a 3 acre field of overgrown weeds and I’m so excited I found your channel. Giving me ideas, motivation and also a good reminder I’m not alone in the struggles! I’ll be tilling down the weeds in the next few weeks! Will you be doing any lawn at all? I’ll be anxious to see your next steps. Great job, love the drone tractor footage!
Oh nice, congrats! Yep got a fairly large area of grass planned front and back. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I remember trying to keep up with the weeds when we built our house, we had to wait a year for sod. We sure could have used ‘Johnny’ to keep the weeds under control. Things are progressing very well at your acreage, I sometimes think you are three people. I don’t know how you do everything on your plate! Thanks for sharing, great video!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!!
Noyce!
I am enjoying your videos I own 2 1/2 acres and one of the best tools I’ve ever purchased is a DR walk behind trimmer with Electric start I rarely use my weedeater anymore
5:12 yes, I can help you out with that! the issue is that your province doesn't have an NHL team; so, you don't know how a Zamboni moves.
but if you could mimic their pattern, you'd already be done and thrilled (in short, you don't encircle the outside, but cut your area in half and then you end up with the same turning radius until you're done.
and this was my immediate thought; just didn't plan on actually writing it down until you really asked for it, lol.
Haha it's a good idea! To be honest, I hadn't even thought of having a 'pattern' to use when I started....I just dove right in and realized that there HAD to be a better way 😄
Nice job Farmer Mitch! tfs
straight cut the edges to make it into a good square and then go in straight lines back and forth and raising the tiller at the ends so you can turn around
Think of it like a hockey rink and that's the Zamboni. Cut it in half and and do the outside. As corners get tighter, move outward to keep the turns the same radius.
any thought to show the house build as well? would love to see what you are doing with the place and how you keep warm!!
when tilling in a square use the same pattern a zamboni does on ice
Try cutting by taking half your yard and cut a rectangle starting east to west and move the rectangle south from north. Hope you understand that. That should reduce the sharp turns.
Awesome
I'm looking forward to this year's Yard Geek❤❤❤❤
Come on Canadian, till like they cut the ice! Line down the center and then move outwards.
I don’t know why I didn’t think about that! 😂
I like watching this channel also! Cool
As a method to optimize your paths with the tractor, do it like they do it on a rink with the ice machines...
Mitch, been a fan of the main channel for a while but this channel certainly has peeked my interest. The way you approach what needs to be done and how it comes across is fantastic. It's no wonder your main business is as successful as it is. Keep up the great work and I'll keep watching for sure.
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying the videos!
My grandpa always plowed in a figured 8 🤷🏼♀️ maybe try that!
Good idea!
Start with a middle pass then loop to the outside of one side, then you can make your turns roughly 1/2 of the width every time
You need to cut headland passes like you’re doing but only enough to turnaround on then you do down and backs but skip rows basically however tight Johnny turns that way your driving straight a lot more
Oh Mitch. You said "time to turn my attention to the interior". hehe. Too much detailing over the years 😆
🤣
Can't wait to see how this turns out
When I used to drive tractor for my uncle's on their ranches - it was just up and back, up and back. You might find that more efficient.
careful turning tight with the tiller engaged. puts a lot of stress on it.
This is the best man. Yard work and detailing cars. I love it and working to do it all some day
Tractor work asmr with the music would be wonderful! I love this! ❤
Good impressive work!! Your yard setup is nice!! Gonna look impressive in a few years indeed!! And I dont blame ya for not leaving the hot tub behind!! 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you! No kidding - that hot tub will come in mighty useful after long days working out in the yard!
@TheYardGeek Indeed sir. Been of fan of your work since 2020. You worked your butt off to get to where you are today. You deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labor!!
You're a beast!! 😮👍
come on, as a Canadian you must of seen how the ice is cleared during a hockey game...lol
I admit, I didn’t plan it out at all and just dove right in 😆
@@TheYardGeek hey, whatever works, the property is looking amazing... enjoy!
Eating dust in a side by side doesn't thrill me. But the snow removal and tilling in the field was great. Keep up the great work.
Ask the local Zamboni driver to stop by.
This made me LOL. That was my first thought, too.
i what to see all!
That was a cool update video, weeds to irrigation to vacation to snow!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What the hey ... You're doing this all on your own?!? Kudos 👏🏼
Yes! Thank you!
I enjoy your channel very much just a suggestion. Maybe you should think about purchasing a DR walk behind trimmer much faster less fatigue on your body.
Hi Mitch loved watching you and i like your sweet shirt hoodie
Thank you!
I love the music
Make the videos longer. How did you make that snow pusher? Show us !
Haha I always worry that you guys will get bored if I put in too much footage!
I don't think that people will get bored; not with this type of interesting content.
but Mitch's right nonetheless. it's no guesswork, I know from other channels that people new to the channel are somewhat hesitant to click on longer videos.
