Gordon Ramsay is one of the only few really big tv personality to actually work his way to the top and that is because his main focus was well… actually working aka cooking.
@@pearline4684 i think you will find most British TV cooks and chefs worked their way to the top as you put it. Nearly all of them trained and became professional chefs/cooks before fame. Nigella Lawson was famous because of her politician dad (who used to do what Rishi Sunak does now). Even Jamie Oliver was discovered when he was working in a restaurant and in a documentary about a restaurant he was working at he talked about things as part of the documentary.
@@cliffhulcoopofficial8075 -- Jamie Oliver was picked for his youth and his looks, not because he was a skilled cook who 'worked his way to the top'. His food has always been pretty fucking awful and he's never actually run a successful restaurant. He got investment funding to start a chain, but it was never profitable. Nigella was actually more famous because of her husband, John Diamond, than because of her dad. It was that documentary about her caring for him and his family while he was dying of cancer that really put her on the map. But Nigella's family used to own Lyons (big historical food business in the UK) so she does have a family tradition there. As with Jamie, her looks were the real selling point.

Gordon Ramsay isn't toxic. He just wants people to open their eyes to the truth. The first step to fixing a problem is by acknowledging that there is one to fix in the first place.
That’s kinda just the Gordon Ramsay ‘brand’ and to make the show better. You can’t talk to people like that in real life. Criticism is important to help people recognize things and get better, but there’s clearly a lot of embellishment and added drama when it comes to his shows.

@boneshakerbaby - agree 100%. I like that at the end, it was all done with respect on both sides, as Gordon wasn't as brutal as he sometimes is. Just a proof, if you are honest with him, and want to improve - he will actually help you and give an advice. And he will appreciate the honesty (as most people should/would). If you bullshit him... yeah, this is not gonna fly at all :) But it is not this particular "kichen" fault as such. Basically the main guy doesn't have enough experience. He has a lot experience in his place, and he is confident that he is doing OK. But he has nothing to compare that too. Doing something for 37 years, and not adapting, not moving forward, not being flexible, being too confident - nah, this is not gonna fly. Also missing the experience with being a chef in several+ other restaurants, other places, or even ohter countries. Just a simple life experience of working in multiple places (regarding your profession). Even somebody like me, would know (not connected with food industry in anyway). But it I was a chef in such place, I would be curious. I would pick the top 20 places in Denver, with different food choices. And simply go there, even once every 2-3 years, as a chef, and just eat. Nothing more. Just taste the food, taste what other people are doing, compare that to food that I'm cooking, and be honest with myself. The lack of comparison to other "products"/restaurants on the market, and dated confidence was his main issue. Note: and his wife is also a proof of his mentality: "...I've been your partner, you haven't always been mine". Such a simple statement, but also powerfull.

If u have a Chinese restuarant owner by Iranian people. U don't put up pictures of Iran. You keep the theme going with Chinese landmarks. Maybe the great wall of China running around the whole restaurant.
The 80's aesthetic totally works if the food is still amazing. There are restaurants in my town who've been so consistently good that the decor hasn't changed since the 70's and they're packed every night they're open.
People will flock to little hole-in-the-wall restaurants if their food is exceptional. Décor helps get people through the door, but it's nothing if Pete hadn't been on board with updating the menu. I mean, Amy's Baking Company had nice décor...
What I like about this episode is that you can tell that everyone in the family clearly loves each other. They're frustrated and they're upset with each other, but they care about one another and that love is in everything they say to each other.
This was one that I felt sorry for the chef, it's obvious he started spiraling when the restaurant stopped doing well, and now feels humiliated because his food WAS probably very good but now it had gone downhill and stopped taking criticism, but in the end he still cares a lot about being a good restaurant owner. It was heartbreaking
I feel for the man as well, and im so happy that Pantaleone's is one of the very few restaurant featured on Kitchen Nightmares to have success even as of now. The restaurant is still in business during the pandemic (using ordering apps, you can get their pizzas, PLUS they have a really snazzy website!) and has 4.7 stars out of 5, since 2013 these guys have still been working hard and not taking Gordon's help for granted. I wish all the best for that family :'')
I also feel for Pete (chef). It's very existentially difficult to admit that he has been drifting to nothingness (performance-wise) because (perhaps) of his institutionalization within his business. When your passion becomes your job and money-making scheme, the best you can do is think about the process. The outcomes necessarily follow. Every dish is an opportunity to lift someone off his own hardships and that's something professionals seem to neglect over the years.
These "italian restaurants " ruled by greeks, mexicans, arabians or "italian" americans are a serious insult to our country, our cuisine and our culture.
I think the key to what has allowed Pantaleone to remain successful after this episode aired is that Pete WAS a great cook in his day, but his own confidence in his ability ironically blinded him from changing with the times. This was Gordon Ramsay's way of teaching an old dog new tricks. Really inspiring and encouraging that you can always return to greatness at any stage in your life.
Here's one neither of you though of, 10% In the survey though that shit was good, statistically some will, however you can't run a business that serves floor 10% like, maybe the food critic in '81 was mental??, or maybe his food went down hill? Or maybe it didn't keep up?
"The business doesn't make enough money and I don't know why. I don't sell pizza's on Sunday, my pizzas are disgusting soggy piles of grease, and I take daily naps. Still, I don't know why..."
Notice when they were smoking outside and Pete's wife came out, he got up and gave her his seat. I just think nice manners show something. At least that's something. Also I desperately want to see the thick crust, it must be literally heart stopping.
Why didn't the boy stand up? Been in America too long to be a gentleman? More importantly, why wasn't there a third chair, since the whole thing was being filmed and they knew how many seats they needed? It's all a set-up! any famous show will be on youtube. Though some of them will have copyright "issues" and people will lose the episodes overtime. They really shouldn't be uploading certain things though, you gotta respect the owner and support the official release.
Pantaleone's trouble were Pete was stuck in the rut and very stubborn. And Gordon really makes Pete listens that he needs to adapt and listen to people. That's why they're survived and even got pretty good ratings. Glad to see them getting better after the program
What I like about this episode is that everyone (apart from Pete) was fully aware of what the problems were and were willing to change. As soon as Pete became willing to change the restaurant saw massive improvements. That is why the restaurant is still open to this day.
Ramsay: SHUT DOWN THE RESTURAUNT OR YOU WILL GO HOMELESS AND IN DEBT! Pete: i still disagree with you. Ramsay: Bloody h- Pete: i disagree Ramsay: CAN I SAY A WOR- Pete: i disagree still
They set this man up to look so bad, but there is no chance in hell anyone does a 180 that hard. Look at the emotion in his face when they revealed the "new" Pantaleone's. This man clearly cares a lot about his business and just was in need of a helping hand.
@@weird_th LOL diplomatic undecisive whimp. "not that bad" is a pointless thing to say. The editing is intentionally unflattering towards the people of the show to create entertainment. When his son cried, made me cry. He sounded so frustrated that he knows his dad he loves just is so stubborn and will sink them all. And then Gordon takes them to Vegas, I mean that's him also being a family therapist for the father son!

Really enjoyed this episode, actually one of the few, where you can see how much the chef/owner is actually invested in his restaurant. Sure, it's hard for him to let go of the past glory and he's in complete denial at first, but hey, we see him actually COOK MEALS! Not just throw it in the microwave. He actually made fresh dough and baked fresh pizza and made fresh pasta. Like, you could see that he actually was experienced in restaurant work and he also was passionate about what he did. Yes, he was quite stubborn, but he did also want to save his restaurant that was so special to him and his family. He was actually much more likable than a lot of the owners on this show.
@@dzernys9555 The point is not about which taste better, but the principles and discipline the chef holds. Although it doesn't taste good, the chef cooked it from scratch, instead of taking shortcuts using frozen, canned and microwaved products.

I like this episode because none of the people seemed like shitty people and they actually followed through with Gordan's advice. Wholesome Kitchen Nightmares.
Right? From the introduction alone you could see that Pete wasn't the villain, but just a bit too in love with his own cooking.
@boneshakerbaby - agree 100%.
I like that at the end, it was all done with respect on both sides, as Gordon wasn't as brutal as he sometimes is. Just a proof, if you are honest with him, and want to improve - he will actually help you and give an advice. And he will appreciate the honesty (as most people should/would). If you bullshit him... yeah, this is not gonna fly at all :)
But it is not this particular "kichen" fault as such.

The 80's aesthetic totally works if the food is still amazing. There are restaurants in my town who've been so consistently good that the decor hasn't changed since the 70's and they're packed every night they're open.
Quality can be sold from "anywhere" - and if you deliver litterally everywhere.
The best Chinese food in our city is literally a place that looks so fcked up you’d think it’s a dumb just by walking by.
People will flock to little hole-in-the-wall restaurants if their food is exceptional. Décor helps get people through the door, but it's nothing if Pete hadn't been on board with updating the menu. I mean, Amy's Baking Company had nice décor...

I love the Clown Picture, I'd love to take my Friends who are afraid of Clowns there and sit with my back to it so my Friends would have full view of it & I'd LMAO at their reactions. lol
this is my favorite episode.. glad to see the place is still up and running in 2024
I love how Gordon takes all the necessary steps without jumping a step to help owners, shows that he isn't just doing this for harsh critiquing but also that he wants to help make owners realize the harsh world they live in and what to expect
Chef Gordon is soo humble I was crying how polite he is cooking
I disagree with you.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The one common factor on Kitchen Nightmares is owner arrogance.
and ignorance (clueless)
yeah, I like watching this show because it shows me how ignorance and arrogance look on the outside, making it easier to identify when I'm being either or.
He said Ramsay never ate a "classic pizza" 🤣 Like he is the master and Ramsay is the ignorant. He doesn't even know how a "classic Pizza" should be. And that's actually good! 😂
And lack of passion or care for their work
how many of Gordons restaurants failed or closed? ;) being a good chef and being a good business person are different. lol.what your are watching is TV busines - nothing to do with food ;)
I know that his stubbornness got him in that position, but seeing him close to tears because his work isn't good enough anymore and probably feeling inadequate was really hard :(
I agree
@@oisinsteele8119 No, Pete disagrees
I was so frustrated with him until he was finally willing to change, almost to the point of souring the whole episode. There's a limit to what's reasonable and what's delusional and he was way over that line.
@@kaldo_kaldoit’s how most men feel speaking with modern woman..lol
For reference : the siesta is a mediterranean thing, even to this day. businesses all over Spain, Italy, Greece and southern France will very much close down during the afternoon and only open again after 4 pm. The heat might have a close relation to this practice.
