    I had the opportunity to listen and see Anthony Jackson back in New York in 1982. He was one of my main influences. Is because of him that i got a Fodera Anthony Jackson Contrabass. Congratulations Anthony.

    Simply the finest bass player! So innovative! So humble! So unique! Its fair to mention most bass players sound almost alike, but no one sounds like Anthony Jackson. I am so inspired.

    Thanks for posting this. A true genius I remember seeing him 1st play on the Grovnor Washinton Video, which I still have on VHS somewhere. He always said the bass is a guitar, so therefore it should have 6 strings!

    I have played bass for 20 years, have played like and along with many: Jaco, Larry, Marcus, etc. In my book, Anthony Jackson is one of the most thorough, gifted, and THE most versatile and seamless bassist Ever. Only his idol, James Jamerson, compares. The boy is no joke!

    Such a great musical imagination.
    Technique is AWESOME!
    TIME - ALWAYS IN THE POCKET
    VERSATILE in lots of different styles of music.
    Versatile in different ways of playing: Pick, Muting, etc.

  • @monkeybass01

    The greatest compliment anyone could possibly pay a bass player is to say their playing is reminiscent of AJ. I was told that once, whether the guy was wearing 'beer headphones' or not it was a good feeling. When you listen to someone enough something of theirs rubs off on you in the end, and there is no greater musician for a hack like me to steal from than Anthony Jackson!

    I never had a favourite bass player - there are so many greats (Nico, Jaco, Alain, Jeff......) and then I got my first Steve Khan and Eyewitness album years ago: "Casa Loco." A.J. is my absolute favourite bassist ever. Anthony, while playing the song, while playing the instrument, ALSO PLAYS WITH YOUR HEAD. He's the first to successfully pull that off. He's the puzzler. Frickin' genius.

    If you admire Anthony Jackson's work, you MUST seriously check out James Jamerson. "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", the movie and (especially) the book are a perfect place to start. The concept of the bass part as counter-melody, while maintaining the bass function is exemplified by both men's playing.

  • @bourgeoisbrats
    @bourgeoisbrats 14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @losernamehere He does the improvisation very much like Gary Willis does it. He looks at the chord changes on the chart, which he's going to improvise over. Then he relies on his ear training (for intervals, not chords) to give him ideals when he plays. Jamerson is Jackson's main influence (you can hear that on this tune), and Jamerson = melodic bassline that uses downbeat-oriented, 16th notey phrases :-)

  • @thephunk1
    @thephunk1 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually, it's all about understanding the format of the tune itself, all its sections and changes AS A FRAME. After that is understood, all the riffs you hear throughout are improvised according to where the music is and what AJ's feeling. That is the goal of any musician...to express themselves however they want, whenever they want, assuming it's not contradicting the overall feel or mood and is not completely raining on any of the other bandmates' parades.

    Yep I meant modern era because AJ is still relevant when it comes to top bassplayers.He's still on the cutting edge of bass technology and construction as well as being one of the better,more well rounded players.The only thing he doesn't do on bass is slap and pop.You'd be hard pressed to find a more passionate and funky technician. He may not be as famous but his playing certainly speaks for itself.Of course that's just my opinion! haha!

      @@ParallelRealities The slap playing on that album was very likely performed by Mark Stevens and dubbed over AJ's playing.
