You are smart to figure that out. Good for you. So many people never make the connection or are told by their doctors food doesn’t matter (until they cross the magic line into diabetes). If we focused on prevention as much as sick care it would save soooo many people so much suffering (and probably lives as well). God bless!

I too was eating homemade cookies and homemade ice cream. I’m 68! Years old and my weight was up. I had blood work done and my A1C was above normal. My doctor said the dreaded pre-diabetes phrase. I cut out all sugar and drinking lots of water. I’m also taking Berberine. I’m down 15 pounds and it’s all good now.

I started taking berberine in January of this year, I train with weights every other day and when I'm not weight training I do cardio. One day in mid-march, I was bringing groceries in, and my hands started to hurt, that night they got so swollen I couldn't move my fingers or my wrist, then it traveled to the other hand I could not pick up anything without my joints swelling. So I got to thinking, what am I doing different, that is causing me so much pain, it felt like I had arthritis. The swelling went down, but my joints hurt, and it started traveling again, this time to my knees, and my ankles, then my shoulders. So I said to myself that it had to be the berberine, since that is the only thing different, I was taking, I am not on any medications, only vitamins. So I started researching the other side effects of berberine, it turns out that in SOME people berberine suppresses the synovial joints, which are the joints that lubricate. So I stopped taking berberine, and I let it ride itself out of my body, it's last stop was my right jaw, I could not open my mouth, or eat comfortably. It took three months for this thing to get out, and now I am back at the gym, and nothing hurts anymore. So whoever reads this, be careful.

I found the keto diet very difficult because I was watching and counting the carbs, and as a result my mind was thinking about the foods I can't have. So I switched to the carnivore diet and WOW! It's so much easier for me, and of course I love steak and eggs! Just stocked up on prime rib that's on sale.
The biggest surprise is after a few weeks once I was adjusted to it...I am actually spending less on the steaks than I did on all the veggies and carnivore ingredients. Less prep and less clean up, less stress, and my skin is so much better, autoimmune stuff is calming down, I sleep better and I am more active. Seems criminal that they are trying to ban red meat.

Dr. Legrand, Is there a possible explanation for why it took so long for you to finally become more responsive to the effects of berberine on your blood sugar to a more ideal 92, rather than the somewhat disappointing 1 or 2 point drop you had in the first few weeks? Could it be that it takes time to alter pancreatic or liver physiology or maybe modulate the insulin receptor on cells? I have heard it alters the gut microbiome and this plays a role in insulin sensitivity. Any thoughts on the time delay it has to work more effectively? Have you also heard that in traditional Chinese medicine they consider Coptis chinensis, a primary source of berberine and to be too 'cold' to take long term, "Huang lian/coptis is a very cold herb and can injure the Spleen and Stomach when taken for too long".

This is good to know in case I need it. I've always been "borderline." My doctors didn't worry too much about it & neither did I. My fasting glucose has always been about 110-130, A1-C, 6 to 7. This is hereditary. I refuse to take Metformin. Medical professionals in our family swear that it causes kidney failure in the elderly. My wellness doctor has been treating me for insulin resistance for years and is not too concerned about my glucose since I do a lot of exercise & follow her treatment plan: peptide injections, Diaxinol, diet, etc.

I started taking Berberine 500 mg twice a day and after about a month I’d had to get another blood test and my glucose went into a very normal range and I’d lost about 3-4 pounds. Then I got Covid and dropped 10 pounds in about 5 days and got ozempic face. For the next month I very slowly dropped a few more pounds. I also could NOT skip meals (a bad habit of mine). I gave up sugar in 2000 and I have eaten a fairly low carb diet since so telling me to cut back on sugar means my doctor is not paying attention. I had covid last Sept and I’ve found my lungs did not permit me to do the 9-10 mile walks a day and lots of stairs were impossible. I eat a very simple diet and I do walk every day for an hour now. The weight began to come back. I added a lunchtime berberine and my weight still fluctuates at the Precovid weight…. I don’t really take it for weight loss but glucose/insulin. I’m changing insurance next year so I can get a full diabetes blood work up. I’m not sold on the berberine for weight loss. I’m coming up on one year….

    ok, dumb questions here:
How sure are you that it was the berberine since your baseline diet and possibly health status, at least how presented in the video, was the time around the holidays in which people also gain weight and probably have increased intramyocellular lipid and other contributors to rising insulin resistance.
Then, did you eat JUST like you did normally before the holidays? Or did you alter your diet, even a little, since your goal was to lower your fasting corn syrup levels?
Even a small dietary adjustment would cause weight loss that you are chalking up to berberine. The weight loss could also be a no part of, a little part of, some of, most of, or even all of your fasted blood sugar level improvement and it might have nothing to do with berberine. Or did you watch your experiment close enough to know for sure?
    thoughts?

Interesting! I recently completed 30 days of berberine. My bloods are fine but I wanted to lose some weight. I started taking it before meals, but it bothered my stomach. later I switched to taking it with food. in the first few days, I noticed it had an apatite suppressant effect, but at the same time, it also made me feel hungrier. I kinda like the feeling of being hungry. I used to train really hard when I was younger and always associate the feeling of being hungry with a successful session. Nowadays, even when I work hard, I don't get that hungry feeling. I also had a slight increase in energy. But I did find that when I finally ate, I did want to eat more. at the end of 30 days, I didn't lose any weight and didn't really have any more noticeable effects than I did in the first week or so. I'll try it again, probably a different brand, and maybe a higher dose, some time in the future.

Mother's milk contains glucose. Therefore glucose is not the bad guy, unless you consistently overeat it, in which case, diabetes results. Fructose is not in mother's milk. It is indeed the bad guy that causes fatty liver disease and beta cell malfunction ending in insulin resistance. If you are diabetic, you should stop eating glucose and fructose ENTIRELY until your diabetes is reversed, by which time, you could resume eating HALF the glucose and only 20% of the fructose you previously ate. Make sure you keep checking your blood sugar level. As soon as you notice abnormal glucose level, you shall go back to square one. That's stop eating glucose and fructose entirely.

    • @susandavis5776

Why go back to glucose/fructose at all? Infants need mother's milk to get the fat for brain development, all things for growth. If mom isn't consuming sugar & carbs, baby won't get much glucose at all...its something we CAN live without & be healthy. Meat & green vegs, fats is all anyone needs.
