I had a rooster who was the equivalent of a German shepherd. He was very territorial of his surroundings and roamed the whole house, roof top and garden. He wouldn't let any stranger into the house and alerted us if there was one. He looked after his lady friends and chased away the stray cats. He lived for five years but it wasn't long enough. I found him dead one morning sitting in his favourite place on the rung of the ladder....l thought he was asleep. I miss him terribly. He was such a character

It is one of those things. Animals, much like humans, reflect their environment. it is why big factory farm chickens are so dumb compared to chickens raised on a small farm. It is also why chickens raised for food seem dumber than those treated like pets.
Just because some animals can be surprisingly intelegent, or make goo pets, does not mean I am not gonna eat them though. Though if I do raise a chicken, it is probably gonna be a pet. (I can't raise one because of dogs though)

When I was around 12 years old, we found a pigeon chick that had fallen out of her nest. We took her home, and finished raising her. It didn't take long for her to warm up to having a human family, and like Teapot, she was like a loving dog, and would check on everyone in the house. When she was old enough to be set free, we started leaving the kitchen window open. After a few weeks, she started staying out during the day, and coming home at night. That routine lasted a few weeks before she moved out. We still left the window open, and every night, she would still fly in and make the rounds to check on everyone. If one of us was awake, she'd hang out for awhile, and sometimes even snuggle. She was an awesome bird.

    • @ixalya2701

there were two pigeons that made a nest in our bucket where we plant vegetables, we later changed the bucket for them to live. Later the eggs hatched and one of the parents were missing, then the other one had to go look for food, and we found two baby pigeons just about the size of an adult human's hand, frozen to death in the nest.
we buried them in our backyard, but i still feel like if i have noticed sooner i could've taken the two chicks home and took care of them until their parent arrives

He slept with his head on my heart just about every night and he used to leave little stuffed animals on my pillow that I would find when I came home from work. I believe he saw me as his mother. Many times when I would be laying in bed he would gently reach out his paw and touch me all over my face. This story of Teapot, is so true. I have maybe, 15 roosters here on my rescue farm of horses, sheep, goats, pig, chickens, roosters, dogs and cats. Roosters, are so sweet. And, no they do not kill each other. It is natural for them to be territorial especially with the girls/chickens. But we are on a huge property so everyone finds their space and get along. i LOVE roosters, especially hearing them crow! Rooster Boy was striking in that he was white with gold and black feathers as accents. Very Handsome! AS my auntie got older, she was looking to downsize her flock and thus I was given Rooster Boy and 2 ladies(hens) for companionship. Rooster Boy outlived his companions but is the Grandfather to his own flock. They all respect him and he rules the roost! I know his time is winding down and I try to give Rooster Boy the best of everything and he is first in line. So, I know totallly how you feel about having roosters,(or Chickens) for pets. When I was in elementary school, we used to have a small chickens farm (less than 50 chiks). I had one special hen that companied me around the house and we played together after school. No one can get closed to her as she seemed only like by my side. And I was the only person she listened to when I called her name; Cilik, which means Little. She was only about two weeks old when I found her. She was a little 'stray' chick that came from nowhere (maybe from a neighbor's house, a few hundred meters away). She came to me wherever she was when I called her. We had a closed bond for at least two years until she died due to illness. I always remember her when I see any chicken pet videos. The best vet I've ever met was Jeff Kahler of Veterinary Medical Associates.
We had a sick parrot that went to a specialist. We were advised that the bird was terminal and it would be best to put it down. I decided against it and searched for a second opinion.
Dr Kahler was local and had a good rep so we thought it was worth a try.
He did bloodwork, found something odd and came up with a treatment that worked. The bird is still alive today.
Why go to UC when the guy across town is better?

I can absolutely relate to how much you miss Teapot, I bonded with Tillie who was hatched with hocks disease (we later learned) and he became a inside birdie-raised with two German shepherds, you could assume he felt as if he was a dog and quickly settled in our lives,. He loved to be swaddled every night, just full of personality, such a sentient creature. I lossed him to a thoughtless family member, who was entrusted to house/pet sit while I was away to see a new granddaughter…. Despite the numerous repeated directions for his care and handling, Tillie was neglected and severely mistreated…. It was an utterly devastating loss that just breaks my heart on so many levels. But the experience taught me more on how amazing chickens are and how epically we fail to recognize the potential for true understanding in the world of chickens.
Thanks for sharing your story with Teapot.

I think a lot of people still struggle internally with this idea. And it shows.
Example, I'm an Atheist, I don't believe anything (including us) has a "soul", and IF we do, than every other living thing on the Planet does too. From a Squid, to a Beetle, to a Tree.
The rest of my family think I'm crazy AF because I'm NOT a believer.. However, when I have discussions with them of this, they are absolutely ADAMENT, that only us Humans have a "soul".
To me, that rationale is even more crazy than they think I am. We're NOT that special.

One of his chickens was named Angel she was white with a red comb and wattle. Her breed was prone to a certain type of cardio circulatory illness.
