Still remember how they played this so well, with the mainstream news even getting on board for the full promo press.

I remember as a kid how big a deal this was. It was on every news TV channel being covered and felt weird as if it were real and interviewing people in long huge lines at comic shops trying to get their copies. Even at school kids were bummed out like “why they kill Supes and do him like that?” This was before the idea of killing characters never stayed dead became a thing.

I agree with the other comments. This story is utterly timeless. I remember reading the Death Of Superman story on the train back home after buying the TPB when I was a kid. Unreal. I remember loving how Doomsday looked before his mask got ripped. Brilliant stuff!

Return was not as strong as death, but that Green Lantern 46 crossover into Emerald Twilight is amazing.

Thing I'll never forget about this event is being a kid at the comic shop and seeing people in there I'd never seen before buying up CASES of these books. Like 200 copies at a time. I remember the guy working there wheeling boxes out to the cars on those two wheel carts. Aaaaaaand shortly after the great crash of the comic book industry when people realized all those types of "event" books they printed millions of weren't going to be worth the paper they were printed on.

I remember reading both the Death of Superman and Batman Knightfall trades at the bookstore in the mall! I got into comics after those events had ended but was easily available in trades and I was blown away by the fact that comics existed and where the original place from where those superheroes came from.

Ooh, if you're talking to Dynamite, suggest to them to release a Red Sonja omnibus in the size and style of the Marvel Conan omnibuses. Collect all the original Marvel material, with the original coloring and presentation...I'd buy it in a heartbeat to set it next to my Conan omnis!
As for this collection: it looks interesting. I may end up picking up the newest printing of it. Whatever else we say about it, it gave us Steel. And 90s-too-cool-Superboy. Those characters each made an impact on their own. And, naturally, Doomsday...

I always really liked this collection. The way Doomsday is introduced is awesome and when he kills Superman I couldn’t believe what I was reading.

I've always loved this story and have all of the individual issues and TPBs. I was 10 years old when this happened and having been into comics for years already at this point, I couldn't believe it. To me it was real and I was plenty upset about it. 😂

The death of Superman story was what got me into reading modern comics. I have a trade of "The death of Superman " that I keep handy to re-read from time to time. I still think it was a great story regardless of how crazy people went hoarding issues to "get rich off". Thanks for sharing Gem!

I remember going to the comic shop as a kid every week for this. I couldn’t wait every week and would bother my mom until she would take me. Miss those days in comics. The story is epic and this printing you have is what got me collecting omni’s when it came out. Great video

  • @Laveau000

I remember back when I was a kid and this was coming out, it really felt gimmicky with all the news coverage and kind of following on the heels of Batman getting his back broken in Knightfall. It seemed like they were copying the Marvel formula with all holographic covers, variants, cards, etc. and it really felt like a corny and unoriginal cash grab at the time. Years later when I finally got around to actually reading it trade form, I really enjoyed it. And it's kind of cool knowing full the story, considering a lot the new characters that came out of this event went on to have huge roles in the DC Universe over the years, and even up to this day it will still get mentioned by various characters in the comics. It's really has aged well, and left a lasting legacy over the years.
Also, never forget that Shaq starred in a Steel movie.

This is my all time Superman story. I was just getting big into comics when this and knight fall went down. Reading these issues was amazing. Finally got to pick up this beautiful omni with the third print, which is my favorite of all the covers. Battered cape flag is iconic. I don’t collect statues, but I pulled the trigger on that prime 1 superman vs doomsday dx. It’s huge!! You grabbing that? I enjoy watching your statue collection, it’s epic. Great vids all around.

There are a lot of people that hate on this. Yes, it was a gimmick, but I owe my love of comic books to two things: Death of Superman and Batman Arkham Asylum. Death introduced me to comics and got me reading them. If not for this I would not enjoy this hobby today. The thing that I remember most about this as a 10 year old was how "mature" it was. The dialogue felt modern and wasn't aimed at just kids.

Just finished reading it for the first time and mannnn that's whatchu call an EPIC! It's was an experience. It is brilliantly executed for a story that covers multitude of ideas. They fully explored every angle possible with this. I am genuinely surprised how dope this was. They had different writing/artist teams switching up for different parts, yet it all felt conceive. It shows the care & unity in which they told the story. It lived up to the hype! A staple of the medium for sure.

This is one of those staple omnibus that deserves to be any collection. It’s a treasure IMO. Also, if you haven’t already, you should do yourself a favor and watch the death of superman (the one that’s part of the DC animated movie universe) it’s very good. All of the animated movie universe is actually really good. Then follow it up with reign of the supermen

I think it's an event arc that goes from gimmick to classic over time. Frankly, the art & composition were pretty boiler-plate DC for its' time & there's not much in it that screams "classic" or "ground breaking" to me. I was already out of comics when this came out, but it did get me back into the shop one last time to pick up issue 75. So in that respect, it did its' job. Looking back, this "event" laid some dangerous ground work & was kind of a harbinger of things to come, which lead to the comics crash a few years later. Overall, I think it has a mixed legacy though is viewed by fans more positively today nearly 30 years later.

Thanks for making this video, Gem. I love your omni reviews. The video length doesn’t bother me at all. My hope is that the younger generation will gain an interest in Superman this year like many of us learned to appreciate Superman in the 90s. I have ordered the Superman omnibus already, and I’m gonna read thru it too. I’ve noticed a lot of people saying that Superman is lame now, which is a tragedy. It seems like only when Superman dies, is dying, or is taken away that people learn to appreciate his character. Otherwise, people take him for granted and even resent him. In Action Comics, Superman just got impaled on Warworld. We’re in the 30th anniversary of the death of Superman. I think DC will revisit Kal-El’s death this year and keep him dead for a while. I don’t think most people are ready for what’s gonna happen to Superman this year.

I almost got the edition that Gem reviewed in this vid on ebay, but something came up at my job and i ended missing out on the final bid. A few days later a guy was selling the 3rd edition with the dope cover on ebay for like $50 because the shrink wrap it came in was ripped but the book itself was flawless. I love it when things work out like that sometimes. Also, I believe the 3rd edition had more content added to it, that the one in this review didn't have. It's definitely a beefier book.

We need a GEM MINT Seal of Approval T-shirt! Loved this deep dive into the Death & Return Omnibus. From the comments below it seems that if you were growing up in the '90s and reading this as the story unfolded, issue by issue, you have fond memories and your review brings those feelings back. From the perspective of a guy in his 50s (i.e., 57) who was reading comics during the 70s and 80s, I can appreciate the story for its historical impact (as you indicated, people in the real world were going nuts when this story was presented) and it is a fun read - but to me its not greatness. During the 80s, both Frank Miller and Alan Moore revolutionized what comics could be and while many that followed tried to emulate their efforts by making this darker, grittier, etc, none succeeded. With the exception of Sandman and Starman I don't believe there are any comics from the 90s that are truly considered to be masterpieces along the lines of Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, Dark Phoenix Saga, Elektra Saga, etc. For me, the greatest Superman comics are still Alan Moore's Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow and For the Man Who Has Everything, Loeb & Sale's Superman for All Seasons, and Morrison/Quitely's All-Star Superman. Just my 2 cents!

DC was smart to kill off SUPES at the time,I believe it sold like 1 million I believe.Correct me if i'm wrong.DC had to do SOMETHING!!! IMAGE COMICS was kicking their CAN in sales!! LOL.Breaking Batman's back was a result of Image busting their %%%!!! LOL.New Image Comics was no.2 in total comic sales, pushing DC to the curb!!! Killing off SUPES was probably the best thing to happen to the title in years.Left Supes dead for a whole year, then spin-off titles with different characters.Don't know if the issues sold well or not,but it was something different. The 90s were interesting times for comics,it wasn't boring tho.

Hello yall yesterday my buddy gave me a lot of sports cards in a box but at the bottom of the box is a 1992-1993 THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN THE 1ST EDITION. HOW RARE OF A FIND WAS THIS AND HOW MUCH WOULD THIS ONE BE?

I can’t believe so many people love this story . Maybe because I wasn’t around when this originally came out but to me, this was so wack haha. The fight with doomsday was cool but everything after was just so BAD to me. THERES A CHARACTER NAMED GANGBUSTER ! And he ruined the Pa Kent issue. So really not for me, but I can understand why it’s so loved .

Gimmick. Read the first trade, no need to read any further. Not for me, but to each their own.
