- The BMW X3 has gotten an LCI for 2022. We're looking at what's changed and why the 2022 BMW X3 M40i might be on your list for a mid-performance compact luxury SUV.
We've driven a number of BMW X3 models over the years, many of the G01 generation including the xDrive30e PHEV along with the top-end X3 M Competition. This week we're in the mid-performance trim, the 2022 BMW X3 M40i finished in the new Brooklyn Grey Metallic Paint and Fino Red/Black Merino BMW Individual Leather interior. The X3 has gotten an exterior and interior refresh with updated LED lighting, new exhaust tips, and new rear turn signals. The interior has been updated to reflect BMW's current interior design trim with updated HVAC controls. We go over the other changes along with the build options on this specific vehicle.
The B58 straight 6 motor got a mild-hybrid system for this year, bumping the horsepower up slightly along with smoother stop/starts. We take the 2022 BMW X3 M40i on a road test to talk about our fuel economy test results along with our impressions on how this vehicle performs, drives, rides, and handles. We discuss how the X3 M40i compares to some of the other vehicles we've driven and why we like this SUV so much.

Great vehicle and great engine and transmission. I don’t think I want a faster trim like a M X3, this engine is plenty fast. IMO best sporty luxury small SUV on the market
Same here, after driving the X3 M C two years ago I can safely say this is still the version I’d get if I were in the market for it.

Great car and a blast to drive.
The BMW M-Sport differential is an option here in the US and it makes the X3 M40i an absolute blast to drive. As my daily, it really is the sweet spot between fun and function.
Good to hear that, I noticed that option for around $1300 and was curious.
The M Sport Dif is an option here also, it just wasn’t optioned on this specific VIN.
That differential probably requires special summer tires
@@alahiri22 Yes, it comes with summer tires Yokohama advan sport v105 “staggered” set up.
It also gets the the top speed limiter bumped up from 130 mph to 155 mph / 250 kmh when you have this setup.
Wheels specs are 20x8.5 inches front and 20x10 inches rear; tires are 245/45/20 front and 275/40/20 rear.
@@jimmyteter Indeed, speaking of options gesture control and voice control are not worth it IMHO and just party tricks that most likely won’t age well. Yes I have them as they come with the premium package that included the heated steering wheel, heated front and passenger seats that I wanted. However I gladly paid for the stand alone differential package over the more gimmicky tech bundle features.
FYI. For a limited time you’re able to option the special 50 year anniversary M division tricolor badges wheel caps with the BMW roundel front and rear the 2022 X3 M40i . Might be a future value proposition as petroleum/ gas ⛽️ vehicles are going to be less utilized as the automobile industry moves to electric vehicles. What’s your thoughts?
Great review. I'm looking to get an x3 m40i, and my build is similar to yours. Do you find the M Sport seats comfortable? The cognac seats are only available as an m-sport option.
They're definitely firm but comfortable enough.

Believe wireless charging wasn’t available for the X3 because of parts shortage. Think the X3M has it.
Fair enough. I find on the BMWs that the wireless phone chargers still don't work very well, when they do work it ends up overheating my phone.
Hey here because I’m debating on purchasing a certified Pre Owned 22 BMW X3 M40 as my daily Drive ,Got couple of questions in my mind hopefully i get some answers.
Did you face any problems or issues with the car ? And how many miles you got on it so far ?
This isn't our car unfortunately, we only had it for a week to review it. Any higher performance luxury vehicle is subject to higher maintenance and repairs, however if you can get one CPO you typically get some extra warranty with it.
You are so wrong on the brakes. They are NOT the same. I've owned a newer MDX and I've also owned X3 M40i and althougth X3 is smaller in size (I think), the X3 is a suv at a different level.

It's pretty stiff, but not completely uncomfortable. Depends on what you're looking for out of an SUV, the X3 M C for the road-trip I did wasn't bad, but I'd have taken this instead.
Nile my good man, hope you're doing well. I have a few questions
1- Did the hybrid system improve fuel economy? If not, what's the purpose behind it?
2- Is it just me, or is BMW using a different red in their interior?
3- I've been reading great things about the B58 engine, which should improve BMW's reliability significantly, what are you're thoughts on that?
Hey! So so far I’m getting slightly better fuel numbers with this than I did with the X4 M40i I did a few years back, the MHEV system does help to improve fuel economy slightly, outside of Sport (Plus) mode you’ll notice it more, the MHEV enhances the stop/start system to give the driver a much smoother transition between engine starts, along with a tiny boost of power when getting off the line from a stop. You’ll also notice coasting when slowing down, giving you a bit better fuel econ. End users won’t necessarily see a savings at the pump, but if BMW sells 25,000 of these globally the savings add up.
As for the interior, the colour might just be my camera as it looks washed out in the shade when filming it, the red is very punchy in person. As for engine reliability, we’ll see how things go long term in a few years, the MHEV adds complexity.

Having a garage is still considered a luxury as far as BMW is concerned. I was surprised the 1997 Infiniti QX4 I drove had HomeLink as standard kit. It’s time the Germans start making more of this tech standard, it’s been 25+ years that HomeLink has been available in BMWs.
I wonder what the impact of the roof rack had on fuel economy
It definitely reduced it, I don’t think by much though.
How was the ride quality over the bumps?
This was a little more on the firm side, closer to what we find from the M Sport suspensions on these vehicles. Still nice and comfortable though.
It's good on the 20 inch, probably super firm on the 21's. 20 is the sweet spot, and more forgiving on rough roads.
That addition of the hybrid motor system is making me question the purchase. I wonder if they’ve used the tech in another vehicle yet and what the longevity looks like.
That's certainly a valid point, while Hybrid technology has been around for several decades now, luxury brands like BMW have been late to the game, and the mild-hybrid systems were seeing are also new to the marketplace. Time will tell how these will be in terms of long term reliability.
Can you blackout the sunroof
As in a tint? Or the motorized shade? It does have a shade that blocks out a good amount of it.

I totally agree, long term Acura, short term BMW 🤣
My Benz is 11 years old now and it drives like new. Better than my 9 years old Lexus which is aging faster and becoming noisier over time. I would never buy another Lexus. Not sure if the same comparison carries over to BMW vs. Acura (since I don't own them), but I would love to keep an open mind and check them out.
@@alahiri22 Don’t even try convincing people who think BMWs are short term / unreliable / money waster. Let them be boring, let them enjoy they’re reliable slow no personality vehicles. They always envy the better cars at this point. BMWs aren’t unreliable and money wasting or short term in every case. I had my X5 for 18 years and it’s been off-road, blizzards, floods, towed over 8,000lbs, to it’s top speed, stop and go traffic of nyc, 104F to as low as -7 F driving, No rust or engine issues besides the obvious spark plugs, coils and injectors, it’s a beast and it’s been enjoyable driving experience, couldn’t ask for a better suv brand. Mercedes and Porsche follow the same idea, you shouldn’t buy them if your a boring stuck up person, only if you really enjoy and appreciate the advancement and engineering you buy a BMW, Benz, Porsche, and other exotic cars. Now cars like Maserati, Range Rover for ex.. those are bad unreliable cars not worth an experience for.
@@aidenp5768 Well said. Yes, what's the point of spending $70K on a vehicle only to assure it's reliable? Reliability can be had for lot less (e.g., Toyota, Honda, Mazda). The point of paying up is to own something special. Having said that, I am not married to any brand. The Lexus that now appeals to me is IS500. I decided against buying it mainly because I'm getting old and getting in and out of a car of that size is no longer easy. I am going with X3 M40i this time. A order has been placed, and the wait has started.

6 months now TH-camrs & Motor Journalist have reviewed this X3 M40I. From these reviews it is apparent many of the features you seemed surprised were missing, is due to the Microchip shortage and other supply chain shortages. North America, Europe, Middle East, Asia, BMW per individual Country, add or subtract many features, from tyres put on the X3, heated seats, rear window blinds, remote start and cabin conditioning, etc, etc. BMW profiles different nationalities and takes away or adds these choices, which ultimately is racial profiling of its customers and market places based on nationality, to minimise their costs and maximise their profits. It shows BMW gives little consideration of customers arguably. Though in fairness to BMW they are also legally obligated to disable or omit some features, such as remote start, as in some countries in Europe, it is illegal to have a vehicle running, with no one inside of the vehicle. A great vehicle which BMW always produce, it is just a disappointment in 2022, they treat customers differently by country the vehicle is sold when the law in those countries does not effect a function or an additional option.
Some manufacturers are opting to install the features at a later date, that’s true. However my complaint has nothing to do with supply issues, it’s the German brands sticking to decades old sales practices of making every single feature an add-on cost instead of making things standard. The 1997 Infiniti QX4 I featured a couple weeks back hand HomeLink as standard.
