Bestie. Can I give a video suggestion? I often have difficulty determining the types of surfaces to sand and how much sanding to do. For example in this video you did a very quick scuff sand and in some videos you spend 6 hours of labor sanding. How do I know how much sanding needs to be done on the various types of wood surfaces? Thanks!
It just depends what the goal of sanding is. If you're sanding to take off leftover paint or after you fixed some of the damage you'd spend a lot more time sanding and changing between grits. But if you are sanding to smooth a surface like here after the primer or the paint was applied then you'd obviously lightly sand because you don't wanna take the fresh paint off you just want to give the next layer of paint a smooth area to sit on
As someone who also has been refinishing furniture for year, I thought this was one of the best beginner tutorials I have ever seen. I get a lot of calls from friends who attempt this process who get some guidance from the paint stores. And their projects are a hot mess! ❣
You are a life saver. I live in an apartment without elevators and need to paint old heavy furniture instead of purchasing new furniture that i really can't afford. You have instilled confidence in me to tackle this project the right way. Thank you my dear!
I literally just finished a large dresser yesterday. It’s real wood, so I sanded it down with a palm sander 60 grit/100 grit/220 grit. Thoroughly cleaned and primed with 1-2-3. Next day (yesterday), painted black, two coats, 2hours apart. This morning it looks fantastic. I’m waiting another 24 hours before I put drawers back in.
You are helping me believe that I can stain, paint and do repairs to a few pieces in my home. You explain your process so well. Then you show us through video how you physically do the work. The end results of your refinishing is beyond what I expect. You are creative and talented. Thank you for the time you take to make these videos. The details have made me want to attempt the same.
Wow! Talk about turning two sow’s ears into silk purses. These look very high end now that you’ve worked your magic. Another great project (and video) Katie!
I sometimes watch other furniture flippers' videos, but I always come back to you. Watched every single video of yours. With you I can rely on always getting a new, unique and tasteful design and really creative ideas. It's such a treat to watch. All the best from Germany.
I have a cabinet that I purchased at auction which I've been planning to paint but kept putting off. After watching your video I feel more confident and ready to approach that project. Thanks for giving me a bit of oomph toward doing the job!
Hi Katie....I've been painting furniture for many years but I watched this anyway because I just knew I would learn something I didn't know from you....and I did. Thank you so much for your wonderful ideas!
I’m just getting started into flipping furniture, and I usually don’t comment on videos but I have to say your video has been the most helpful one I have seen yet! Iv watched probably 20 other videos so far to just drill the info into my brain and see peoples different techniques and tricks they do. Thank you so much for this video!
I love Native face wash. My face is so clear and hydrated. I’m 56 and been through chemo and radiation. My skin is in good condition because I followed my doctor’s advice through treatment and conditioned and hydrated my skin and body. Native, L’Oréal Collegian and Hydra Renewal are perfect.
I LOVE that you chose a dark color. The original pieces have visual weight and to whitewash them would look mismatched. The dark blue matches the substantial construction but elevated them. They look regal, classy and sophisticated. Well done.
2:30 wood filler 4:00 sander (or power sander ) the filler and surface 5:22 dry cloth to clean up the sander dust 5:52 Primer the surface 7:20 Remember to raise the piece during priming for bottom part 7:40 how to primer the detail part that the roller doesn’t fit 8:02 double primer 8:30 clean the hardware 9:00 fine sander to smooth out the primer (don’t leave any sander dust for best outcome ) 9:32 pick the paint and color the first coat 13:56 sand the first coat 14:08 color the second and third coat
Great video, thank you! My grand daughter has my parents (her great grandparents) bedroom suite bought in the mid 1940’s. I chickened out on painting it. Now I feel more confident but will start with the piece less used just to make sure I know what I’m doing.
As always, you do such an amazing job on some not great looking pieces of furniture! It turned out beautiful. Also, thanks for breaking it down into easy & simple steps to remake a piece of furniture.
I just found your video! I just bought an old headboard and footboard from our local pet rescue resale store today and with your tips I am going to tackle this! I think I can do this!
I have been repainting furniture for years also. And learning from my mistakes (like, don't try to clear coat over dark colors, lol) but I'm glad to have watched this, as I've learned something new! And with some new projects on my horizon, I am glad to have learned them!
I feel ready to start my first project! Love that you explained the steps. Knowing the “why” and not just the “how” is so helpful. And the little tips along the way were great! Thanks for sharing.
I’m so happy someone in my Facebook group recommended your videos. This tells me a lot about why I’m seeing brush and roller marks. I’m definitely looking for a perfect finish first coat. Thank you!!
Hi Katie - so glad I found your channel! This video will be really helpful as I get ready ready to refinish end tables for our family room. Your work is really beautiful and you’ve explained everything so well. From one Canadian to another - thanks for sharing your wisdoms!!
Well done. I agree with using alkyd paint for durability and great finishes. I've used Dulux Melamine Alkyd paint for cupboards and it's second to none!
I just got my first piece of furniture that I am excited to get started on. Thank you for creating this easy to follow instructional video for beginners.
I have been binge watching your videos and enjoyed them all. This is in my top three favorites. You take a beginner step by step through the process, explaining how to get a great looking finish even with a limited number of supplies. I have a piece in mind very similar in material to these nightstands that I now have the confidence to tackle myself at some point in the future. Thank you for posting this how-to!
Thank you for the thorough explanation. Thought this would be hard when I first thought about getting into this. But after the watching this, I now feel a lil more confident
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve painted a few pieces, but I still consider myself a newbie lol. Your video was very informative and I’m so glad I watched it, and grateful you made it.
Katie, This was very helpful. I have a piece of furniture I want to paint & I have been putting it off for months, so this was great info for me. Thanks!!
Wow excellent job - what an improvement!!! And to think way back pretty much all furniture was the same dark color and we lived with it that way - who knew that we could paint our own furniture and how fantastic it would look??!!
This is an excellent tutorial for beginning furniture painters like me. It's filled with really practical advice and makes the whole process seem much less daunting. Thank you for a great video!
Thank you so much🎉 ❤. These tips were so helpful. I want my furniture to look great and last. Not a hot mess. These info videos help me understand the steps , get brave and go ahead and try. Your the best
They look so much better! I love the gold of the handles against that deep bluish grey! ... I decided I was finally going to try out the Native products, which I've heard about quite often, but sadly they don't ship to Europe! Kindest regards, k
Thank you so much. I enjoy these types of videos, but so many of them have gotten so elaborate, so technical and use such high end equipment that no one would own unless they did this professionally. I’m so tired of videos using sprayers because they’re not as easy to use for someone who doesn’t do it every day.
Many of us do this professionally so the tools and techniques that we teach and share are a reflection of that. Spraying will always be my preference for painting furniture but you can definitely get great results without one 😉❤️
I’ve been watching your vids for literally years and I still learned something new from today’s vid! Although I’ve been watching for years I am just getting started with projects of my own so this was definitely helpful. I’m going to try out that paint on one of my projects (a writing desk) and in fact that color is exactly what I had in mind. They look great!
Thank you so much for giving me much needed confidence in painting my future kitchen cabinets with a brush and roller. I thought one couldn't get a great finish without an expensive sprayer.
You are an amazing teacher! Even with years of experience (although not full time like you), I learn so much from you. And Even if they are reminders, it is SO helpful. I’ve never tried those rollers because of the fuzz. But the trick to wash them out before is so easy- but brilliant. Whey haven’t I thought of that? 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ I tried the Alkyd paint because of you and loved it. It has a little learning curve when you are used to chalk paint, but my piece came out with such a beautiful smooth finish. Haven’t put it up for sale yet, so we will see how others like it. 😊 This is one video I’ll be saving, for myself and to share with friends and family who are looking to update a piece when I don’t have time to do it for them. Katie, you are just AWESOME!
Thank you for you video. I'm going to be starting with some laminated pieces I have around the house for practice. You have given me inspiration to be successful without the huge expense. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for sharing this - from Sydney Australia. you have made some great tips especially using cans of soup and the plastic bag to stop the paint from drying up. Cannot wait to watch the next video you make 😊

I agree!!
Katie you are such a good teacher. I’m getting up my courage to start a night stand project soon, thanks for your beginner tutorial.😊
Agree
Where can I find your work

I'd love to see your results! And what paint did you use?
Love the navy with the brass pulls, looks stylish and chic.

Love the blue and brass together. Simple elegance.
Wow, they came out awesome without groundbreaking construction techniques, 37 different tools, and years of experience! 👍
Wow! Talk about turning two sow’s ears into silk purses. These look very high end now that you’ve worked your magic. Another great project (and video) Katie!
Those night stands turned out sooo nice. I love the color. They have more life in them now.
They turn out to be beautiful !!! And the color is amazing. love this short workshop how to paint properly a piece off furniture !
Thank you Katie! Great to go over the basics from time to time!

A very clear, well explained video on the basics of painting a piece of furniture! Great job Katie!
I LOVE that you chose a dark color. The original pieces have visual weight and to whitewash them would look mismatched. The dark blue matches the substantial construction but elevated them. They look regal, classy and sophisticated. Well done.

Hi Katie. You are very talented. I love your projects. I am inspired each time I watch. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
What a great video that demonstrates well and clearly how to refinish not-too-damaged furniture. I really want to try doing this! Thank you!
I never thought I would like those original pulls, but, with the new colors, they look great!
As always, you do such an amazing job on some not great looking pieces of furniture! It turned out beautiful. Also, thanks for breaking it down into easy & simple steps to remake a piece of furniture.
I do the same with the rollers. I'm glad you said it. They look fab and I love the colour

Great, simple tutorial. Thank you! Just what I need to attempt a first paint project in about 15 yrs 😊

Awesome work that you did with this furniture
They look fantastic, and I do feel more confident about my project.
Hello Katie. The Behr paint seems to do the trick. Very nice smooth finish. 🥰🥰🥰
Wow best video out! Made me way more comfortable

Gorgeous! I wish I had watched this before tackling my first project and buying way too much stuff I actually didn't need.
Thank you so much for giving me much needed confidence in painting my future kitchen cabinets with a brush and roller. I thought one couldn't get a great finish without an expensive sprayer.
Use latex extender with your roller or brushs.
