  • In this video I retro-fit a glovebox to the dashboard of my 2008 Smart Fortwo Passion 84 BHP Turbo 451. This involves removal of radio surround trim, removal of head unit, lower dash trim, crash protection polystyrene blocks and various other items in order to access the required bolts/screws. I fit a complete glovebox including the backing/housing, the frame and the lockable lid. I demonstrate how the lid can be removed and refitted by sliding the plastic hinge pins. The existing key will not fit the lock barrel however a replacement which is compatible with the vehicle's key is available from Mercedes-Benz/Smart dealer.
I also demonstrate how to remove the sticky residue that can occur on soft touch trim surfaces by using isopropyl alcohol and a microfibre cloth on the radio volume button.
Back in 2008, a glovebox was an optional extra on all models - Pure, Pulse, Passion & Brabus for GBP20, as detailed in the brochure/price list from that time.
    The following parts were used:

Ich habe in meinem Smart nur den Rahmen mit Deckel eingebaut, funktioniert sehr gut.
Deine Methode ist natürlich besser, einfach perfekt 👍
    Viele Grüße, Jürgen

Wow... that's a big thing. And lots of work... lots screws..
BTW nice to see those details of the heating. You never see this, it just works (did not know how).
My 2008 451 fortunately has this already. I use it for my Garmin Route planner and car paperwork.
Very well explained how to do this (like all your video's) Well done and thanks..
I have a subscription to Evilution and they do talk about this with pictures. But no voice over nor video's 🙂 A bit slurred, but that's OK... LOL

Another nice video. I would be interested to carry out this mod but would consider just adding the frame and lid. You say it's easier to fit the whole unit could you explained why as I would think just fitting the frame into position and drilling the box and. Fitting the frame and lid seems much easier unless I'm missing a majour something.. Thanks, Brendan. 👍

You’d need to remove the existing housing anyway in order to get it on a bench to mark out and drill for the locating dowels and screw holes, so I just figured it easier to bypass that step and buy the unit complete. The outcome will likely be similar!

Looking around, it seems you put your 451 for sale in June - so probably gone by now. That's a shame - I learned a lot from your videos: removal of the rear panel, gearbox oil change, swapping the intermediate elbow to the exhaust, changing the front engine mount etc. I have a 2009 451 turbo and would have liked to have known the part no. for your exhaust (if original) and whether the gearbox oil change would have been easier on a ramp (I'm guessing so). I'm about to change the alternator belt on mine at 60,000 miles - that would have been helpful to see, too. Anyway, I'm subscribed and see you have some BMWs to play with - in addition to my 451 I have a BMW E30 and a BMW E39!

@@badwolf4058 Yes I took the difficult decision to sell it. I’d done so much to it that there was no more content to be made. It was a great example and I daren’t calculate how much I spent on parts! Great to hear about your BMWs. I hope you enjoy the Z3 content. There’s lots to come.

Hi mate, great videos on 451, you didn’t mention how to get the barrel made and cost?
    Thanks

Nice. Is it possible to change the radio panel to a funky touch panel, GPS? 👍

To be fair I will very rarely deviate from original equipment but with the correct adaptations, most things are possible. There are numerous aftermarket options.

Thanks for your sharing. I just wonder that maybe you could exchange a Android monitor to replace the original one.

I'm going to London this July, maybe I can bring some equipment you need for free to you.
