Americans seem to worry more about fuel economy than Europeans, even though our fuel is much more expensive than the USA. For Europeans manoeuvrability is way more important - hence the engine being rear mounted, it's not just about space, it's also about giving the car lighter steering and a tighter turning circle. . Also, for all the "being down there and looking up a trucks" thing is typical hyperbole. European cars tend to sit higher than US ones of the same type, as we like to sit high to get better visibility in congested city traffic. As for why we love manuals, I have no idea. I hate them. Auto all the way. Originally I think it was about performance - our engines are small, high revving units and early autos were less efficient on these engines.

I’m a truck driver. Back up for 8 hrs. When there is a fatality in an accident they usually shut the road down and sometimes you passed a offramp so you have to sit until the State Police DOT and the corner gets thorough investigation done before they open up a line. So after 9 hrs we are moving. The only 2 people that Dead are the 2 in the smart car. Which was sandwiched between a pick up truck and a semi truck. But they don’t tell the public that it would be bad advertising for the little smart car. Most crash tests are done at 45 miles an hour. I bet you won’t find a crash test done on a smart car because they know without even doing one what’s going to happen to you all they have to do is look at a full-size car and seen the damage at 45 miles an hour and you can pretty much figure out what you and your smart car gonna look like. Well at least your family won’t have to pay for a casket. I just come across this video because I was thinking of getting one of these instead of a golf cart for campgrounds because these are legal to be on any public road. If you need to go pick something up from the store.

I owned a Smart car way back in 2001, ran it for 5 years, absolutely loved it. Mine had LHD which strangely was somewhat of an advantage in the UK. It was slow, and the gearshift not good, but I got good gas mileage from it - usually 40 to 45 mile/(UK) gallon., and I used it mainly for long runs of 400 miles +. Never felt unsafe in it, and at the time I drove an 18-wheeler rated at 98000 lbs gross for a living. My colleagues used to laugh when I arrived for work, parking my Smart next to my big rig. The transmission in my M-B tractive unit worked in much the same way as the Smart and it too was mostly a PITA. Never had any problems with the car and only swapped it for a VW because I needed to carry more than one passenger regularly. and, oh yes, the engine was 599 cc and was turbocharged.

I realize this is an older video, but only half of what he is saying is accurate. I own and race a 2009 Brabus Cabriolet SmartCar here in Hawaii. It is 2021 and I have owned it for about 2 years. Here is a COMPLETE rundown about my car.
There is a ton of support and parts from different groups on the Internet for these cars.
They were made for over 20 years.
NOTE: This car is SHORT but it is NOT small. It is as tall as any Honda Fit, it is as wide as any of the FIATS (now there is a piece of crap) or other small cars. It is only shorter, but front facing is the same size as 80% of the cars on the market and it has a HUGE front window to see out of, and big doors. Very easy to get in and out of. Try getting into a Lotus Elite.....
Horsepower - 105 bhp. Tubocharged. You do have to use hi-test gas.
Mercedes did not supply their own engines for the car for a short time, and mine has the factory Mitsubishi engine. It think it is a better engine than the Mercedes. Same size and specs.
The tank holds nearly 8 gallons, I get 40+ miles to the gallon even with the leadfoot I have. I had to fill it up last year, and might have to fill it again this year. Depending on how I drive (hah).
900 cc, three cylinder engine, is peppy and fast.
Insurance rates are the same for any other car.
It is speed limited to 85 mph, but with that bypassed it will hit 105 miles an hour easily.
I pass cars and trucks on the freeways here easily, have never had an issue.
It handles like a dream at any speed even in crosswinds. McPherson struts, electric assisted steering.
Mine has 17" wheels front and back. It does not fall into small potholes! It corners like it is on rails. Seriously.
I have raced sports cars for over 40 years, including Spitfires, MGA 1600's, Karmann Ghia's (well, with some mods), Bug Eye sprites, the incredible Saab Sonnets and more. I know a little about sports cars.
The SmartCar can handle just like any other sports car in it's class.
It weighs 1,800 lbs, and has a built in roll bar as part of the excellent frame that runs throughout the car.
It has giant doors to get in and out, I would say the car is actually bigger on the inside than on the outside!
** Excellent brakes. Plenty of acceleration to get going on an on-ramp, just stick your foot in it to get the turbo spun up (3,000 rpm) and drop your foot off the brake.
    Price of parts and Maintenance.
There is always some whiner that lets a dealership nail them to the mast, then complain about it. Honestly this is one of the easiest cars I can think of to maintain. My 13 year old neighbor girl changed the oil on mine the other day, so she could learn how. It costs no more than any other car for maintenance, or for parts. I have replaced several parts on mine with newer lighter versions (running boards, front and rear air dams) The running boards were $100 each. I bought replacement headlight nacelles for $150 for a brand new set, including the bulbs.
*** there are plenty of parts available, especially through E-bay. Nice thing is that like the Saturn Cars, the body panels are plastic on the outside. They are easy to fix or replace and there are no gigantic quarter panel parts to worry about. ** I had to put a new Air conditioning fan in it. Under the dashboard. The fan was $60 (2021 price) and it took 15 minutes to pull the old fan and motor out and snap in the new one.
...This car was made by engineers for the common shade tree mechanic.
The engine itself is set into rails, that can be detached at mid car, and the entire rear end, engine, trans and all will roll out like a wheel barrow. This is an amazingly practical design, and beats the hell out of pulling an engine out of my Subaru WRX.
There is an AMAZING amount of room in the back, over the engine. If you lay the passenger seat down, I put 6 foot long FENCE posts in there from the hardware store and drove them home.
.....note it does NOT have an automatic transmission. It is a manual transmission, BUT, it has dual clutches and is shifted just like an automatic. 99% of the people cannot tell the difference. A manual trans is much easier to maintain. The dual clutch is just like the ones on racing motorcycles. It comes with a stick AND it comes with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, and you can switch back and forth while driving between manual shift mode and automatic. The manual shift is sneaky, if you rev it to 6 grand in first gear it will shift itself into second gear anyway! Even in manual mode when you come to a stoplight, it shifts itself into 1st gear, but still in manual mode.
Used prices are excellent. I would buy one again in a heartbeat.

I've lived in Scandinavia / Europe for just shy of two decades. I can tell you that Smart cars are fantastic for cities. However, everything you've said is true. Even on the "small" highways of Europe, you don't feel safe in these cars. I had one (a mid 2000's model) that I loved to drive around town. I tried the highway once, ONCE. I ended up selling it to buy a Rover 75 which was just as good gas mileage and heaps better for space and I could drive on the highway without feeling like I was a tin can between bowling balls.

I used to work for a company that 'had' (past tense) 3 of these. They eventually got rid of these POS's (and I don't mean 'Point of Sale'). The automatic transmissions shifted like someone who did not know how to shift a manual with big hesitations in shifting gears, When you really needed to pick up speed, like freeway on ramps, you had to manually down shift because the car would not do it itself. With it's rear wheel drive it would get stuck in the snow and you could not 'rock' it back and forth to get unstuck or it would first take away drive then reverse, so you would have to get out, dig out, then try again. On a windy day it would get pushed around on the freeway. My Mitsubishi Mirage, with 403,100 miles on it (with no engine or transmission work ever needed) got the about same gas mileage as they did. One of the three needed, with less than 60,000 miles on it, over $2,600.00 in engine repairs needed. No one, including me, liked driving them. - Nuff Said --

Thanks for all Your good videos. I live in Denmark, where we have small roads and we have big highways. I did by a smart CDI as an extra car, and it is not the fastes car, but it can do about 140 km/h and and the speed limit in Denmark on the highway is 130 km/h, so You have a point. But I do not aggrey with You, I do think You could drive a Smart car for some time, and You would have another opinion. I have a Opel Astra, VW Lupo 3l, and the smart car, but I have found that the spare parts bought online is much cheaper for the smart car, that the other cars if I buy parts from other brandts. And it is not that difficult to work on. The CDI can if the oil is changes every 30.000 km do about 700.000 km it its life time. It does not have a automatic transmission like the big American cars, with an torque converter. It has a tratinal transmission with a traditional clutch, witch is handled by 2 electric motors and a computer, and it is not slow at all. And it is a very economic car i can do about 30 km on a liter diesel. I think is is not fast like a sports car, but it is not slow. But it is more a city car then a highway car.

NOW, for a guy/girl/other politically-correct gender to have a heavy foot and press hard all the time on the accelerator the Smart is not for you. Normal transportation driving, even zipping driving, the transmission is perfect on mine AGAIN HOWEVER the last 2 years of Smarts have a different transmission, not stick-automatic - geared more for the sport, heavy-foot driver. Hey, I like the Scion iQ too! Wish they didn't discontinue it!

Summer is more like 36-38 depending on how much I use AC. Are you referring to Imperial gallons by any chance? Anyway, at the 115k mark she broke a valve and that is the end. No or will work on them except the dealer where they sold new. Still supported but at a price that makes no sense. $9,100 for a “new engine” plus tax and labor (over $200 an hour now.)

A car's mileage is not simply based on having a smaller engine or less horsepower. But the ability of the engine to effortlessly move the car given its weight (less rpm's). And naturally if you are going downhill with a tailwind. :)

I'm in Australia so we use Litres and out of the 30L (8 gallons) tank I can get 500klm (310 miles) , that's 6L per 100klm travelled (1.5 gallons per 62 miles).. I think that's pretty smart haha. Especially with the price of fuel (gas) these days $1.80L ( $6.80 a gallon) is pretty much the cheapest you'll find anywhere in Sydney. I would agree with Scott, the parts are hard to find but I would disagree in saying that the parts are not expensive even when buying direct from Mercedes. These cars aren't popular here and I get stopped and spoken to about it everywhere I go and if you see another smart car we always get happy to see another one and wave to each other lol.

I heard they are not the best in the snow probably because of the low ground clearance and lack of weight . They are probably hard to stear straight on the highway when it's real windy . I think they would be ok in big cities if one doesn't rack up too many miles on the odometer.

I get the appeal of Smart cars, but they're a hard sell when there are equally efficient sub-compact alternatives that can hold way more cargo and passengers.

I own a fortwo 2006 cdi (diesel), 200.000 km not a single repair. I make trips of 500km every 15 days at 120km/h and could go at 140. It uses 4 litres every 100km! Super cheap. Best car I had, i want to keep it forever.

I disagree, I bought one for my wife.. we have escalades, it is a blast to rip around in, and it has hit 85 on the highway and cruises smooth, their just a fun and actually very comfortable ride... have no complaints.... I honestly dont drive it too often, but, she prefers it over the escalade and the gmc all terrain... so, guess it is an smart option.

This Car is built for Europe as you said. For Example, I'm living in Germany, the Taxes for Cars are excruciating. The Smart car has its sweet spot around 2008, so it costs only about 20€ in taxes and a little bit in insurance, but the tax over here is calculated around engine displacement and emissions standards. So the tax can be skyrocketing. The Gas Milage isn't as important, even when gas is three times as expensive as in the US. We don't drive that far. Germany for example is only about three times the size of Ohio. In the US the smart car is indeed a gimmick, and if I would live over there, I probably wouldn't pick one up. But in Germany or other European Countries it makes really sense in a financial way, and even more if you are single, a couple or on a very tight budget. Keep in Mind , that the average income in Germany is a bit higher as in the US, but we have to pay at least 4 times the amount of taxes. For example, the monthly running costs without gas for a 2008 Smart car is about 16,45€. The Civic instead is around 95€ per Month. Keep in mind, it's without any costs for repairs or a single drop of gas. The economy is different, the civic would be only affordable, if both adults are working or you have a well paid job. Otherwise it's far too expensive. The insurance is also per car not per driver. If both adults are working, and you both have to drive to work, the smart car is 8 times cheaper as if you get a second civic... Keep that in Mind... 😉

My son had a Mk2 2007 Fortwo Passion 1L for 3 years. It was a good little car but the gearbox was very clunky. It was still fun to drive though. He has just replaced that with Mk3 Fortwo Proxy 0.9L Turbo. It’s a cracking car and so much better than the previous model and great fun to drive too. It’s perfect for the UK’s and European roads and is nippy enough too with the turbo.
The last time I was in the USA we hired a Lincoln Towncar. That was the most horrible vehicle I’ve ever driven. The front seats must have been around 8” thick and what a waste of space for the rear passengers. It was the minimum of 2 Smart Fortwo’s in length and hardly what we would call a city or town car over here.

I usually agree with you. I own a 2006 and it still gets 62.5 miles per gallon. Great car to drive. It’s a big go cart. When the turbo diesel came out the car was getting 83 mpg. You’re just wrong.

Saw an article about a year ago. Asking could Smart cars become the new dune buggie/sand rail. It has so consent drawing. Looked pretty cool.
FYI. My in-laws have a Honda CR-V that get 31 mpg average. Fits 4-5 plus luggage. They took 4 people to South Dakota from Alabama comfortably.

Ok, let me put it this way... I live in a city of 120k people.
Speedlimits 25mph in the residental, 35mph for the general roads, and of course we have a few major roads that are 50 mph.
The city is about 8 miles, by 4 miles. Tons of people here live alone, retired. as well as a ton of students. Now of course students will want huge fancy big cars. but for most of us, who drive maybe 20 miles a day. drive to grocery stores and back, have very very limited parking, don't take long trips on the highway. And in fact don't even go near the highway most times.
Small electrics, smart cars, and even smaller, are all we need. And oh yes, there is smaller then the smart car... and cheaper. little 3 wheeled car (motercycle) all electric that can do highway speeds with a 50 mile range.

You think the Smart car is not very fast? My wife has a 2006 Smart car and I have done 85MPH down the motorway. We have travelled from Cornwall to London (UK) - 250miles with two people and granted we could not do more than 85mph, but as the speed limit is 70, we were passing the majority of vehicles on the road that day. Hers is a 0.7Lt and we got 60mpg and that little Noddy car chewed up hills like they were flat roads. There has not been one person who has driven that car who hasn't get out with a stupid grin on their face from the enjoyment of the experience. Next I want to see how it fares on a trip to Scotland - 600+ miles.
