The MODX is exciting but the best thing for me is that your channel has grown to the point where companies are now sending you gear to demo. That's a milestone if there ever was one - Well done, Woody. Thanks for the great demo, exiting to see Montage tech trickle down to an affordable level. It sounds great.
You put a lot of effort in - always watch your vids - got me to buy a d50 and a dx7 when I had been ignoring these digital ones - so cheap and both are really good
I couldn't agree more Jordan. I've been a silent follower of Woody's channel, and I'm happy that Woody can achieve this milestone (yes it IS a milestone for any youtubers when a big brand is recognising your channel and sending you their new product)
well i was on a 'anologue frenzy' buying lots - I came across woodys channel and enjoyed it and honestly it turned me onto buying some old digital synths dx7 and d550 - his presenting style is unique and enjoyable - very accessable.
Congratulations on the continuing success of your channel. I hope you develop two ideas on your channel: 1. Tutorials on pop rock (especially 80’s) 2. Deep dives into this keyboards functionality Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
@roland gerard well course they have you nitwit, 14th was the launch date. He will have recorded this video days or even weeks ago when they gave him the pre-launch model, but he will have been embargoed from posting it until 14th September.
This is very exciting. The Montage is the best but expensive. The DX7 was the best but gone. An affordable Montage and the The DX7 back - in one instrument? I must be dreaming! And there is no one with true passion better to introduce and explore it than Woody.
Hi Woody. Great first look... I've subscribed as I'm watching this 5 years on waiting for my MODX6+😃 I'm a Roland guy but this machine looks incredible. And nice and lightweight for my gigging! Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to the rest of the videos 😃
Wow! Yamaha really knows "sound" and that's why I have always loved Yamaha! I played a Yamaha Tenor Trombone with an F attachment in High school and it was the most beautiful sounding Trombone I have ever played. That got me hooked on Yamaha Brass instruments. Then in 1989, my Marine Corps buddy bought an original Yamaha DX7 (which I was coveting, but couldn't afford) and that's what got me hooked on their keyboards. Now that I play multiple instruments, I have come to the conclusion that Yamaha pays the most attention to both sound quality and product endurance over time!
It looks and sounds great, I am definetely getting this one. After long search for workstation jumping between MX49 and ROLAND JUNO DS61 then letting them go,looking for individual reface DX,CS AND CP looks like this can do it all and even more, wow 8 operators more than DX7 this will be so much fun.1199€ is a very good price for what Yamaha are offering.
Woody, the only Reface I have is the CP, but if you want to compare its sound against that on any voice, send me a MIDI and I'll record the output on Audacity. I am curious now because you sounded unimpressed with Yamaha's efforts in CP-80 sounds.
Can’t remember if I told you, sold my Motif XF8. Too heavy to take anywhere. Got myself the Montage 7, amazing keyboard. They look like they’ve done a brilliant job of making budget models there. Good score Woody!.
Great synth, great video. I think yahama did a good job with this machine. I was surprised to see this big screen. The sounds are amazing. By the way : Yamaha did a really intelligent decision to push it to you as your video are the best : nice guy, nice music, not "too nerdy" (just enough) and perfectly understandable English for me (I'm French) and we all know we can trust you.
34:16 I saw no comments about the "1999 riff" being played and had to make one. I loved the video and am thinking about switching brands again lol (From Roland to Korg to Yamaha). Now that I know you're a Prince fan you have my subscription sir! Superb detail in the breakdown!

Last time I was on Woody's Channel he had just under 20K subscribers, now he has 45k !!!!!! MODX6 now under £850 as of May 2020 excellent price for great synth.
Well done on the pre release Woody, so well deserved as you are always the guy to turn to for honest reviews. I love the sound of this thing and am seriously considering which synths - or body parts - I can sell to get hold of one if these!! Like you I’m a massive DX fan, having started out on the good old DX 21 back in the 80s. This synth sounds massive though with those wonderful evolving pads and textures. Looking forward to your future videos in this.
I have a Montage 7 and like the lightness the new model good job Yamaha, but i notice it has a wall wart shame!!! A cut down Montage is a good idea sells more units ! I think you will enjoy your new toy Woody be interested to see how you find all the complex features it has!! A new era for cheaper synths nice to see the big screen survived the cut down, the scene functions are killer so have a delve into those , they are great for live playing!!
After viewing this video, I am certainly going to rush and purchase this instrument!! I can hardly wait to try out the wonderful sounds I've heard so far as well as all the other sounds that are in store!! WOW!! Great presentation mate!!!
After swearing to myself to not buy anymore instruments before learning to play i ended up buying a used Casio FZ-1, and honestly after that it feels a bit weird to see a yamaha that costs over 1000 euros lack aftertouch. But still it's awesome to see cheaper instruments start featuring multiple synthesis engines. (Though with my budget if i end up getting a yamaha it will probably be an original rack motif.)
good point, i'm not really an aftertouch guy so I don't care, but seems like all manufacturers leave it out at this price point, which I know is unpopuiar. guess you get what you pay for...
I love that the audio interface is class compliant - my inference from the "even for iOS" bit in the manual. I recently tried the latest Yamaha model PSR 4xx series arrangers in the local store with my iPad, and it just works, which was pretty cool to be able to layer stuff onto the arranger sounds via the iPad on a single USB line - MIDI out, audio back, or vice versa. Kudos, Yamaha.
I like that. The "new" technology of the montage available in an (more) affordable package. Long video but worthwhile, never boring. One thing though: Is it possible to turn the light effects of the super knob off? Probably the first mod I would be making is getting that RGB led out of there. First impression of the sounds is really good. Really SY territory quality and dynamics. Thank you Woody, and although already subscribed you've got me hooked now for this MODX series.
Sounds good so far, just hope those hidden multi-arpeggios don't stay hidden or difficult to navigate to as it could become a long term frustration. Looks good as well. I bet you're well chuffed to be given one to review.
Totally awesome that you got your hands on one before official release! This is an outstandingly good unit Watched the stream awesome warm sounds Cheers from Australia
I just enjoyed how happy you looked playing the keyboard and you seemed in your own element and discovering new things! That made the entire video for me! Love what ya do man! I ope to get roland or some company sending me stuff soon as i start going into these synthesizers like I need to! Keep up the good work! Stay happy!
It looks like you may have some late nights playing with this. When I bought my first Korg Kronos I wouldn't get to bed till early hours in the morning. Looks like a great keyboard. Thanks for sharing.
Wow!!!!You got one to demo that’s awesome! I liked the montage but just too much $$$$ . So the 7 version , especially as they’ve put a sequencer in this , is now an almost certain purchase for my next main keyboard. Thanks Woody & good on Yamaha for including you (and also for making a keyboard for people like me !:)
presumably you're being sarcastic, but we did a lot more than just an unboxing in this video... and this is just the intro to set up a series of videos, thanks for the comment though, cheers :)
Awsome sounding synth. Looks like a great synth for creating soundtracks and film scores. The combination of FM synthesis with the other synth engine is quite novel. It also feels a bit like a modern wavestation in a way, in how the sounds sort blends and evolves.
Oh boy that superknob is like the filter res and drive sweetspots all in one controller sounds awesome, I'm really looking forward to this series of videos
I'm glad to hear the keys feel better than the MOXF, which I thought were too light. I'd heard rumors of a MOXF replacement earlier this year with Montage features and a touch screen, but I didn't think it was going to actually happen.
these keys are just as light as before, but I think they have a more quality feel, the springiness and bottom-out feels nicer. and the textured finish.
Amazing woody! Looks great! I just bought an original dx-7 mk 1 with the harmonica sound from what’s love got to do with it on there!! Got it for $150 in great working order! Goes with my super JX-10 now! Getting an M1 in 2 days as well!!
wow, dx7 for 150, that's a steal, congratulations, you sure about the harmonica though? i know the flute is from the DX, but the harmonica, always thought it was stevie wonder. good luck with the m1.
The harmonica on What's Love Got to Do With It was definitely DX7, but the key is that they were using a breath controller. Using the breath controller on a DX is an amazing experience, the control and expressivity are wonderful. I wish Yamaha still offered them as an option. :-/
Producer Rupert Hine played/sequenced all the instruments, I read somewhere. The Stones asked him later, who the rhythm section was on the album and it was all him.
Love the way you was brave enough to demo a keyboard straight out of the box without a behind the scenes look first. 😂 Look forward to seeing you getting to grips with this nice looking instrument. And great to see Yamaha continuing with FM synthesis. Time to upgrade my trusty DX11🤣
What a great demo. I really enjoyed it. Despite the small hitch over the name, why aren't you on TV. You are a natural. Hope to see you with your own show soon. Thank you for sharing.
Yep! Thanks! If you watch the music video with the song, Tina turners what’s love got to do with it, if you watch the music video, the harmonica solo starts at 2:05. Its cool because mine came with the exact harmonica sound! Not very common!!
Woody, loving the sounds of the MODX6. Bass was rocking my study! Super knob is a great addition. Changes the whole soundscape with a couple of turns. Looking forward to future videos featuring this keyboard. Kudos on getting it from Yamaha, they must respect your channel enough to forward a pre-release product.
Wow, that's a bargain compared to the Montage! Almost all features at less than half the price and less than half the weight! They barely bothered to slap on some limitations in the software on... numbers of presets and songs?! Sure, slightly less user memory, no aftertouch, some missing buttons an controllers, but still, what a steal! Go and get it! I also love how the MODX6 is barely larger than my MX49 - ~3cm deeper and ~10cm wider at an octave more and with lots more sound in it! It might replace the MX in my office some day...
Woody, no way! This is true: I just went to my mail app to send you the info about this release in case you hadn't seen it. And there was your TH-cam notification of your UNBOXING video! I can't wait to hear you demo this beast. Check out the YT Doctor Mix demo. The MODX looks very cool, including some of the Montage fun at a much lower price. For your future demos, I'd really be interested in seeing if you could set up a couple sounds (e.g. pno, ep, org, and synth)and use the faders/Superknob to mix and switch. Thanks for the initial sounds demo; nice stuff. LOVED the second, synth-y patch with arp that you played. And, as always, it's a blast to watch the delight on your face as you play appealing sounds. Cheers, Cliff
hi cliff, for once i was early to the party! can't promise anything as we have guests tomorrow but might try to fit in a live stream, we can enjoy more of the sounds together.
@29:36 - LOVE that ambiance! I have all Yamaha boards, well, one Korg, but I am so going to get this board as a top board for gigs. The only thing about Yamaha I have a gripe with is allowing more flexibility to create richer EP's. I loved playing my brother's Roland G8. Those EP's were nuts! I hope this board allows that and look forward to seeing you develop the sounds as you learn this board. BTW, you sound like a soundtrack musician. That's a great skill to have. =] You've been subbed my friend!
Some of those sounds!!!!!!!! Ya know every time I think software is catching hardware up, I hear reverb on sounds like that and then I think not a chance. Those sounds are just gorgeous! Could Omnisphere get even close? OK just finished watching the whole vid and I have a criticism with the synth. They shouldn't make it so easy to get to the best sounds straight away. That means everything else is a step backwards! Not your fault though Woody. Great enjoyable video.. thanks/
I can’t wait for mine to get in. Especially since I have this week off... yeah, I’m one of those sorry sods who can and has to work remote. 2 years ago I sold my PSR6xx and MOXF6 and despite getting back a system8 and a JDXA, which I adore! I do miss the MOXF6. I’m sure that the MODX7 will fill that void.
Woody, so pleased for you. Hope this brings you a ton of views. I’d really like to know how the fm basses sound vs awm, particularly how clean they are in the lower octaves. Also the moxf had an annoyance on the cutoff knob as those knobs would step, if you could address how the knobs on the modx are in comparison would be really interesting. Due to the modulation options on the moxf I never found the stepping to be an issue as I would use an expression pedal, lfo or mod wheel for cutoff control live. However, it did bug me that Yamaha didn’t pick it up in design. Also, the moxf has 6 arps for each performance so it could be used similar to an arranger, I.e. moving between verse, chorus, bridge arps - would be interested in what the modx offers, it looks like 4 on the Andertons video I just watched and they referred to them as scenes I believe?
very curious myself about the arp performences and how they are integrated with the scenes, there are only 4 buttons there. the knobs are "notchy" just like the moxf but I didn't hear any stepping when I played the filters, I'll pay attention to it next time.
Woody Piano Shack oh so they are still notchy, that's interesting. Perhaps they interpolate between the notches now? If so that's annoying as it could be fixed on moxf via firmware then.
I've seen a couple of other demonstration videos about the MODX from the channels I've subscribed. I must say so you far, even this intro so far is the best of them all! It's actually good you had to stay away from this motif bells and whistles as so we could hear the actual sound and not this fuzzy "magic" which has no use in real world.
Awesome video Woody! I had heard of a possible montage sibling in the pipeline and I was hoping it would be a light weight version of the montage without compromising on the features. And from your video, it looks like MODX is everything we could hope for! I was not aware that this sibling had been released and I was pleasantly surprised to learn about it from your channel. I could not have asked for a better introduction to this BEAST. Looks like it is time for me to upgrade from my lovely MOX keyboard :) Thanks for the introduction Woody. Yamaha chose well!
@@WoodyPianoShack the lack of buttons on the right panel was the first thing that caught my eye. I prefer buttons over a touch screen myself, but looks like Yamaha has given in to what most users have been asking for - a touch screen. I would have preferred they kept the panel buttons too. Still, fingers crossed and I hope that the lack of buttons is not a deal breaker. Looking forward to your review of this machine. Please let us know how comfortable you get at using the touchscreen.
Congratulation for being recognized by Yamaha. Apparently your videos made an impression. :) Your son doesn't care to see the keyboard? That's funny. "Go ahead and play with your synthesizers, I'm very busy". lol
Thanks for those videos, I really enjoy your approach to instruments; and I enjoy the fact that you do not repeat the same things every other reviewer does repeat, or spend 40 minutes playing the sounds; which while entertaining and useful to a point, to get a feel for the sounds of the keyboard; just waste time on something that every other reviewer does. Would you have the chance to actually show the IO of the MODX, as far as computer interactions? In particular what I find lacking in almost every single review, is that nobody show how do you use the USB stick to copy to and from the device, what do you actually get as output files, or how do the exported midi and audio file look like. Last but not least, would be nice to see a workflow with the DAW. I believe you use Reaper, but mostly that should be similar in all the modern DAW; so still useful to see how the MODX integrate, as far as being used as control surface and how does the workflow to and from the device and to and from the DAW actually goes. Thanks.
thanks for the suggestions! I haven't really got any plans for such vids, although useful I'm not sure how interesting or entertaining for general public. I wonder if Dom Sigales has done some vids already on that, go check it out perhaps!
@@WoodyPianoShack No worries, I understand that after all, the videos on youtube has to be made for the views; not necessarily for the sake of covering certain areas. As such it is logic to spend time on something that the majority may understand. Sadly I find the same issue with most youtube channels; and probably the only one that goes in depth is cuckoo; but I will try this youtuber you did mention. Thanks!

absolutely, nice one woody. Congrats

My MODX is sitting here still packed. This is a perfect first step. Woody is so good I don’t even need to look at my keyboard.
All of the keyboards that I've ever purchased since I was a teen until now has always been yamaha. I think this keyboard looks great.
Can’t remember if I told you, sold my Motif XF8. Too heavy to take anywhere. Got myself the Montage 7, amazing keyboard. They look like they’ve done a brilliant job of making budget models there. Good score Woody!.
MONTAGE and MODX, best synths on planet earth.
Love my MODX.
After Roland, Yamaha found out about you. That is great news. You've come a long way, dear ;) Congratulations! A nice synth this MODX.
I have a Reface CS and love it to death. I'm so happy Yamaha have made this, it looks like a winner!

The smiles as you were playing said a lot!
Congrats at the pre-release!
Thanx Woody, you just destroyed my plans to save some cash. :) Time to start selling of my old machines :)
I have been getting ready to get a Prophet 6. Now I want one of these. I know, they're totally different animals. But this thing is really nice.
Totally awesome that you got your hands on one before official release! This is an outstandingly good unit
Watched the stream awesome warm sounds Cheers from Australia
I just enjoyed how happy you looked playing the keyboard and you seemed in your own element and discovering new things! That made the entire video for me! Love what ya do man! I ope to get roland or some company sending me stuff soon as i start going into these synthesizers like I need to! Keep up the good work! Stay happy!
a new synth day, that's reason enough to be happy! cheers for the comment.
It looks like you may have some late nights playing with this. When I bought my first Korg Kronos I wouldn't get to bed till early hours in the morning. Looks like a great keyboard. Thanks for sharing.
it's actually been in the case since my demo, but I'm feeling like we should do a live stream during the weekend
Fantastic overview and playing! Looking forward to more breakdowns and reviews. I'm so happy to have found your channel!
fantastic comment, glad you found us!
Monstrous sounds, it says DX in the name, and it has a flashing knob... R.I.P. wallet.
that's funny Xav, lol!
But with no aftertouch, a feature that was in the DX in 1980s.
people seem to forget that the DX7 cost 3 times the price of the modx when it was new.
@@colbalt95 I wonder why it's so hard to find one with aftertouch...
@@tilleyroadaffairproduction6752 The DX7 has aftertouch
Exclusive unboxings, this is a big step in the channel
presumably you're being sarcastic, but we did a lot more than just an unboxing in this video... and this is just the intro to set up a series of videos, thanks for the comment though, cheers :)
Modx sounds super nice and futuristic 👌🏻
Awsome sounding synth. Looks like a great synth for creating soundtracks and film scores. The combination of FM synthesis with the other synth engine is quite novel. It also feels a bit like a modern wavestation in a way, in how the sounds sort blends and evolves.
dykodesigns2yt Well they already did the FM/AWM hybrid thing 30 years ago... but the world wasn't prepared back then ^_^,
Ward de jager I thought you could cross modulate FM oscillators with awm oscillators in the Montage/modx ... :-(
Oh boy that superknob is like the filter res and drive sweetspots all in one controller sounds awesome, I'm really looking forward to this series of videos
This is a DX 7 marmonica sound also, you will know the song th-cam.com/video/Uc8wmLul3uw/w-d-xo.html
Producer Rupert Hine played/sequenced all the instruments, I read somewhere. The Stones asked him later, who the rhythm section was on the album and it was all him.
I had a Play on one yesterday, sounds awesome. Always been a big Yamaha fan. Much more interesting than my Korg Kronos.
Congrats Woody!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Love the way you was brave enough to demo a keyboard straight out of the box without a behind the scenes look first. 😂
Look forward to seeing you getting to grips with this nice looking instrument. And great to see Yamaha continuing with FM synthesis. Time to upgrade my trusty DX11🤣
Congrats Woody... sign of many good things to come!
hi there Neil! i hope so, i'll check out the rhodes and hammond for you.
What a great demo. I really enjoyed it. Despite the small hitch over the name, why aren't you on TV. You are a natural. Hope to see you with your own show soon. Thank you for sharing.
that's funny to read, thanks, this'll do for me!
Woody Piano Shack I mean it Woody your great funny too.
Thanks! just bought it, will watch your vids about the synth!
wow, congrats on your new synth day!
Thanks, Woody! I have a itch on my pocket, now... It's time to save money for this!
i barely found out about this thing two days ago and you have a video? whaaaaaaaat!!!!
6 GB sample library! Whoa!
Yep! Thanks! If you watch the music video with the song, Tina turners what’s love got to do with it, if you watch the music video, the harmonica solo starts at 2:05. Its cool because mine came with the exact harmonica sound! Not very common!!
Gratz, my man! This is a nice moment!
Congrats Woody on your first company collaboration. On a first model release even. 8D
Finally Yamaha has made a decent-sounding synth - 18 years after it was due😂
Woody, loving the sounds of the MODX6. Bass was rocking my study! Super knob is a great addition. Changes the whole soundscape with a couple of turns. Looking forward to future videos featuring this keyboard. Kudos on getting it from Yamaha, they must respect your channel enough to forward a pre-release product.
guess so, very flattering!
29:36 Nice little piece you have going there. I'd put a light sax or trumpet lead melody over that and add a chorus part or bridge. Nice sounds.
Filip Skakun Yeah, I really like the MX49 form factor too. Which is exactly why I just bought this yesterday. It’s almost tiny ! Very MXish!
Great video Woody! I'm seriously considering getting the MODX 7!
No one is to blame....first song....and my first bought single.
haha, well spotted sir! it's just the first thing that came to mind, nothing here was planned or rehearsed :D
Holy crap, this is on my wish list now.
Who doesn't love to unwrap a new synth !!! Great demo, Woody :~) 👍
What a fantastic sound when I compare this to my 15 year old MO6
@29:36 - LOVE that ambiance! I have all Yamaha boards, well, one Korg, but I am so going to get this board as a top board for gigs. The only thing about Yamaha I have a gripe with is allowing more flexibility to create richer EP's. I loved playing my brother's Roland G8. Those EP's were nuts! I hope this board allows that and look forward to seeing you develop the sounds as you learn this board.
BTW, you sound like a soundtrack musician. That's a great skill to have. =] You've been subbed my friend!
You did a cracking job Woody. As they’d say in Wales, fair do’s butty!
Great enjoyable video.. thanks/
man, sounds amazing @29:36, what a lovely evolving pad/sequence.
I just don't know what is better, a Woody's video at Friday or this amazing synth!
too kind of you, maybe time to reschedule to a friday night slot then!
I like Saturday's series too, but is a good idea!
At least on the Montage I don't hear any stepping on the cutoff knob.
very curious myself about the arp performences and how they are integrated with the scenes, there are only 4 buttons there. the knobs are "notchy" just like the moxf but I didn't hear any stepping when I played the filters, I'll pay attention to it next time.
Woody Piano Shack oh so they are still notchy, that's interesting. Perhaps they interpolate between the notches now? If so that's annoying as it could be fixed on moxf via firmware then.
dat 29:25 progression! Those are some addictive patches, I'd be stuck there busking chords for hours.
No one MO, MOX, MODX etc. will never replace old kind DX7. Beauty and sound quality completely different.
It gave birth to new generations but its the granddad that we all love and remember.
28:00 he is finally doing some music :)
this video is a slow burn
I know and I love your work....but for those coming for the music ...I would give a hint :)
Thank You :)
@@WoodyPianoShack im looking for sponsor of keyboard piano to use in my apostolate for children here in philippines... Thanks.. God bless...
Great intro video. I find your vids really helpful and entertaining. Nice one
Thanks Woody, great demo :-)
Great job as always Woody. A nice piece of kit. I used to love my DX7 back in the 80’s, it always cut through the mix live with a band. 🎹👍😄
and it still would!
Damn, nice playingskills there! That keyboard also sounds pretty sweet.
28:25 the sampled piano with the DX7 electric piano is one of the nicest combos I've ever heard.
No way!! This is nuts!! Thanks!
Dang some of those sets sounded pretty lush yet disgusting (in a good way). Very interesting, can't wait to hear more!
good video I have got I 1 coming soon can not wait
Just arrived today. You pulled my trigger!
Multi-channel USB is awesome!
Im so glad Yamaha thought about the masses also wanting to have fun 😂
Awesome video Woody! I had heard of a possible montage sibling in the pipeline and I was hoping it would be a light weight version of the montage without compromising on the features. And from your video, it looks like MODX is everything we could hope for! I was not aware that this sibling had been released and I was pleasantly surprised to learn about it from your channel. I could not have asked for a better introduction to this BEAST. Looks like it is time for me to upgrade from my lovely MOX keyboard :)
Thanks for the introduction Woody. Yamaha chose well!
yes, i think they got this one right for the price, not sure if I'm a touch-screen guy, but only time will tell. thanks for the kind words.
Please let us know how comfortable you get at using the touchscreen.
touchscreen UI making me uneasy, but let's give it our best shot!
Thanx for the video! It's so inspiring! Now I know what will my next instrument be)
Congratulation for being recognized by Yamaha. Apparently your videos made an impression. :) Your son doesn't care to see the keyboard? That's funny. "Go ahead and play with your synthesizers, I'm very busy". lol
thanks, and the kid was busy playing fortnite i expect... :D
Thanks!
