Tony, I get more out of the videos you post than anybody else's out there. You tell me what I want to know, and that's true of any product you talk about. I wish Bonners was in the USA!
Very thorough. Didn't just focus on pianos. We KNOW Yamaha makes realistic sounding pianos....it's all the OTHER sounds that never get enough attention. Thank you!! Great demo of the keyboard's actual sounds.
THANK YOU so much for VIVIDLY showing what actually EVERYBODY NEEDED TO KNOW. Yours was the video which I had been searching for far too long.
I live in India and we have Modx7 scarcity in stores.
One of the best demos I've heard of this so far, thank you! A number of people on TH-cam seem to be auditioning a load of random sounds, that you're unlikely to use at a gig. It's good to hear some real music with real instruments :)
I’ve just bought an MODX7 and it’s amazing!!
Difference between modx and montage
I just bought It also - in the beginning - I don't found enough sounds - since I came from the genos, which sound is very very good :)
Now I have to edit a lot I think - if someone knows a good place to buy some nice sounds, let me know it
What are the keys like?
you are the only one reviewed the rhythm with the sounds and thank you very much for that .. most of the reviewers focused on the sounds only and that is very frustrating .. this is the best review
Thank you for you kind comment
@@bonnersmusic Hello, I would like to know if I can insert the motif ES8 sounds in the MODX8. I would like that you could help me with your opinion🙏.
Its a brilliant little keyboard and the sounds are amazing.
I like to load up a mid file and have the keyboard play the song with different sounds. You get some really cool ideas with this keyboard.
Thanks for the video.
This video just caused me it get in to debt lol. By far the most suitable demo ive seen for me. Damn!!! 😁
I think Yamaha hit the perfect size, weight and price with these keyboards. I've been looking for the past year not really too excited about anything I was seeing, but once I saw the MODX8, I ordered it right away.
That is why I bought my MODX8, it is very lightweight compared to my old Yamaha P200.
as always, nice demo Tony, you're a great keyboard player
Excellent presentation!
I love my MODX, the creativity is virtually limitless. It also integrates extremely well with Cubase.
You are one of the best I’ve heard demonstrating this keyboard. Love your music ideas.
Thank you for taking the time of making this video. And the music is actually great! I love it!
Thank you so much!
I just got this keyboard for my daughter and it's awesome!
A superb review and introduction to the instrument. I have seen a few reviews of the Modx but this i feel illustrates it best. Thank you.
This is a pro. synthesizer for use at live performance and in the studio. 👌✨✨✨
Fantastic review. Answered my questions from a gigging pov.
Excellent demo. Thank you for sharing.
If I get one of these, do I just plug it to some amplified (studio) speakers ?
7:30 - Beautiful!
Could I somehow load my performances, loaded on a memory card, from my old Motif6 (2005) into an MODX7?
Got one last week for 800 euros shipping included ( second hand plain MODX not the + version) and for that price I’m extremely happy witht the synth.
Could you consider identifying the sound selections you used in this video?
Maybe by way of subtitles? or headings popping up as you demo each sound?
Hi, My name Anatoly. I have a problem with which I have not been able to figure it out for a long time. I watched dozens of video clips, but I can not find the answer to the problem. My synthesizer MODX6 stopped memorizing the sounds that I save or which I remember from USB or Live set or Favorite. While the synthesizer is turned on, everything is normal, turned off and all the sounds that I recorded in the memory disappear. I don’t know what I pressed wrong, HELP PLEASE...
Thanks for a good demo is this model have a sample future?
I'd love to hear you play, "Miami Vice Theme song ", by Jan Hammer on this beauty!
Wish we had a store here. Would luv to trade in my old one on this.
this release makes the Yamaha MOXF6 more interesting now it has a price drop and that has a usable SEQ unlike the new yamaha
I haven't seen any price drop in France at least, for sure.
I got one mint on Reverb for just over $700 for 61 key. Very satisfield with it. Navigation has taken awhile to used to. The sounds are very good. Am looking at MODX also now.
The MODX has a sequencer now.
Is the 76 semi weighted?
the key bed is horrible , like a kids toy
@@bruceross9521 Thanks for the reply. That is terrible for such a feature rich instrument and Yamaha. Guess I am old, but seemed not that long ago if you bought 88 it was weighted, 76 was semi-weighted, 61 was either toy or semi weighted. Now I guess who knows. pretty much only play 88 myself on synths now. Anything less just play through the 88 to it.
Amazing demo!
Tony ur God gifted man ,just amazing , ols do detail videos of LFO'S ENVELOPE COVER , MOTION SEQUENCING , SEQUENCES AND CUBASE A1
What a great vídeo! Can you share the name os the sounds you played , I loved the piano sound at 6:37
Hello Tony.
Can Modx makes favourite memory banks for easy access to sounds and styles.thank you
Yes
just tried lifting my SY77 like that, pulled my back and can't walk now.
Wow .. you actually still have an SY77.. thats amazing.. the 77 was my first ever real synth .. yeah that thing was a monster to carry.. i think it weighed about 40-50lb .. but i remember wanting an SY99.. so i could have the sampler and the Shakahachi pan flute sample with the after breath that Enigma used on his albums.. hehe.. hows your back these days 👍
I bought the MODX8, mostly for piano voices as it sounds great, and very lightweight. I may get another digital piano to take its place for on stage performance, since the MODX8 is more of a synthesizer than just a stage piano, like my old Yamaha P-200 stage piano, which is very heavy.
Excellent job Tony, thanks.
Looking at p515, would this one lose the real piano style compared to the p515
R these factory sounds?
Roland should either release a new fantom or even bring the xp series back with a newer one
They just did, Fantom 8, it sound good and now had a touch screen.
Hi guyz, I do play Indian classicals with more usage of modulation joystick. I am aware that I can use external joystick as midi... Can I use external joystick for inbuilt sounds ???
Can i use a Boss FS-7 pedal to switch scenes back and Forward.
Great review, Cheers!
Hi Bonners - I have an MOX6F but cannot find any instructions in the manuals to add delay/echo effect - (times, velocity and feedback) to a track in song or pattern mode.
The master effects only show Chorus and Reverb. You help will be very much appreciated - Thanks Chris
You should include that the polyphony issue makes this board close to the Yamaha psr 🤓
Does the bass and rhythm play automatically following the the chords like an arranger kb?
Question which pedals can I use to change scenes with the yamaha modx?
Good morning
I just wasn't to thank you for this video..I have one question and one question only..does the MODX 8 or any model of the MODX have/come with integrated/on board performance sequencer..or do I have to use a Mac book with logic pro x...please. Just a yes or no..thank you
stephen gibson Version 2.0 of the modx includes a sequencer
I've seen a few demos but haven't heard anyone say "each one has the EXACT same amount of sounds as the Montage" (Which I played and loved for its many great pianos )is there any way it has as many sounds on board?
Are the audio converter the same that in hte montage in the Yamaha MODX series? thanks
Does the modx 7 have weighted keys?
Only the 88 is weighted ...the rest are plastic and lightweight and allow for faster action (Which I actually prefer) . I laid hands on all three...I have an 88 so would probably get the 7.
No, semi weighted.
Where are they made?
Can this rounded lighted button be stopped?
Yes, that is an option
Hi very undesided which one would you recommend either the korg krome ex 88 or the Yamaha modx 8 thanks
Can you pick up my Ensoniq so I don’t have to ship it? I’m in Georgia, USA. I’m not sure which of your locations is closer.
There's a GC 1 mile from my house but if these guys will deliver to CA I'm good with that. LOL
Is it MOdernDX?
Does the MoDX6 have an Arpeggiator..??
Hi. Yes I have the modx6 and it has the exact same arpeggiator as the Montage with 10k arpeggio sequences in different categories.
Is the MODX6 weighted keys?
No
Se alguém puder me ajudar pois já tive um nor stag 2 88 teclas e as teclas do nord não era muito pesadas
Thank you for the review. You didn't mention, but MODX8 has different type of keys from modx6 and modx7 models.
He did, right at the beginning of the video.
no right at the start he said they were the same, weighted
Dont know if its just me but I feel the key USP of the Motif series which is Pattern based phrase sequencing has been lost in the transition to the Montage. I may be old fashioned but the lack of the Motif sequencer is a big turn off :-(
Great news that this will be addressed with OS v2.o in October!
Can you play Glenn Miller or Sinatra type
songs on MODX?
What is the differences between the Roland Juno DS88 and this?
The Junos are sub-1000 USD level keyboards, competing with (Korg) Kross and (Yamaha) MX series. Mine (Juno DS 61) is a pretty good rompler, but programming patches can be a bit difficult. The Roland FA series has a bit higher quality components, and would be in the same price/capability range as the MO** keyboards. I think the MODX has quite a bit more audio interface capabilities - no special driver required, extra channels, and the ability to send incoming digital audio through effects.
As previously stated by Roboprogs, the Juno DS88 is not really a competitor to the MODX range. You would be looking at the FA series for something close. Other options would, of course, be the Korg Krome. Roland does not really do a workstation that is competitive with the Korg Kronos or the Yamaha Montage, meaning that it has no competitive flagship model to take from when it created the FA08. The built-in interface to connect to software on your computer without the need for an external interface makes this an incredibly versatile and useful instrument for your Studio.
Roboprogs whats the sound quality difference between the modx , montage, motif , kronos,m3, korg triton, and roland fantom, juno, jd? Like from worst to best although they all have good sound quality ?
@Qualitystuff: I, uh, dunno. The only one of those I even own is the Juno DS :-)
That, and my local music store doesn't even seem to carry much of the Korg line, mostly Roland and Yamaha, so those are the ones I get to poke at from time to time.
My experience with the MODX is only watching youtube videos over the last week. I like what I see, and the specs sound good for the money, but I've not gone down to my "local" store (a drive...) to see if they have one out to play with yet.
I suspect the Yamaha sound engine is a little better, but I really like the physical layout of Roland's keys/panels a bit more, which is why I got (for what I can afford) the Roland Juno DS instead of the Yamaha MX.
Roboprogs thanks for replying, i know what you mean i have an old roland eg 101 4octaves and it’s one synth and arranger at the same time although it mostly has pop rhythms but i used to think that arrangers and synths sound the same and i bought later on some yamaha psr 730 etc thinking its gonna sound better than my eg101 but omg it sounded like a toy like a 50$ keyboard 🎹 and then i read more about the differentiations between synths and arrangers and realised the reason my old eg101 sounded good was cos it was a synth even though it was a low-mid range synth but i know what you mean roland always offers you the sound effects solid nobs to make the sounds sound even better which i love but i wonder why is it so hard for the manufacturers to make an arranger+high end synth all in one or is it just so they can make more money or i dont get it but anyway id rather go for a synth if i had to pick one but having an arranger and a good synth is cool though them arrangers rhythms help a lot and you can add tons of them from all genres
Very good video. Is the MODX8 a good alternative to a stage piano or a digital piano? What the resistance do you get from the GHS Keybord?
I bought one(MODX8)a week ago and Im pretty disappointed. It is more of a synthesizer than an alternative to a piano. I wanted mostly piano sounds and its very disappointing. Especially the sounds on lower range are.. donno how to express but they gather together and dont express each individual sound when you play a chord. And all the piano sounds are dull. Personally I dont see any difference btw all the different piano sounds. They are all dull. Not clear.
@@annalee809 nothing a bit of EQ and compression can fix. It’s a great keyboard especially for gigging. Sounds cut through the mix.
@@annalee809 Nord products would probably do you better
Hi I’m really curious does this have built in speakers
Are u blind?
Nope, no built in speakers, as you need to use a line out.
does it require external speakers or it has its own built in?
You’ll need speakers or an amp
does it come with internal Speakers? modx7 model?
None of the MODX keyboards have built in speakers. You'll need to purchase some studio monitors such as Yamaha HS5 or HS7, or a keyboard amp - dependent upon your needs
That brass sounds like mine SY55 :)
At least, Modx is an improved SY77 and, yes, it can also less realistic brass
Hi Bonner,
Great Keyboard!!
can MODX play styles like GENOS or S975?
please advice.
MODX has no styles... genos and psr are arranger keyboards... MODX is a synthesizer... you have to create them using individual sounds...
Hi I have limited use of my right hand. Is there was a to use the octave changer to play with the left hand and the keyboard would automatically play the right? or do you this keyboard has other options. Thanks.
Hi, yes if you using the arpeggiator you can shift any part to any octave range you want. I have only one healthy hand but able to create and play complex arrangements that way. It's very versatile. Good luck.
@@deondewit3175 thank you so very much
When you're talking about trade-in deals.. Is it just keyboards or other gear like sound modules or rackmount synths?
I'd call, but I've lost my voice.. :P
why didn't you mention if the smaller ones are weighted keys or not? I do like how they don't stick a bunch of useless plastic casing on the ends of the keyboard.
Lol I found my wife a used Montage 8 for an absolute steal of a price at $2000 a few years ago and ever since I’ve been trying to strike lucky again for another. No luck obviously. I think I’m going to enjoy the new MODX+ though.
I’ve been owning synthesizers since 87 i have an ESQ-1 and a Motif XS-7 synth. The Mo was a synth and the DX7 were both synthesizers, yes it has a keyboard technically, but this is the marriage of FM from the DX-7synthesizer and the Motif XF synthesizers .You must not be familiar with music products, that was a correction by someone who is possibly a “newbie” on the music scene. Learn what you’re taking about before you speak my friend.
fingerhorn4 no it was a reply to Grinder one , who said this is a keyboard not a synthesizer.
@@fingerhorn4 So basically most modern synths are a waste of money. buying a few old school synths like a sy/tg77 and high quality effect modules is cheaper and you get the same or even better sounds.
Name of that piece in 5:28 ????????
Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield
What do you not get with this that you get with the montage?
Half the FM polyphony, less user sample flash ROM, less USB audio channels, less faders, no ribbon controller.
Does it have string resonance?
Yes, it does. You can check out the detailed specifications and sound library here: uk.yamaha.com/en/products/music_production/synthesizers/modx/index.html#product-tabs
Good video. I'm interested in this but I'm concerned about how robust it will prove (the 88, I mean) against a sustained period of piano use, ie buy a trained pianist, particularly with it being a plastic chassis and not having the key action found in Yammy's higher end EPs. Any thoughts on that? Vs a more piano-focused board like the Stage 3? Thanks.
Price ?
I am not current on all things new and synth … but some of you are saying it has no sequencer and the video clearly shows that it has a sequencer. I planned on using my DAW anyway. So who really cares?
Ghs touch ... Not bad ... But after a few years ... Keys making noises and it's also not good for practice! (Experience with the p95). I'm wondering about the synth keys touch ... Playing pianos.
ghs action on these is what they put on their cheap digital pianos. Lots of complaints in past, unless they made it more reliable.
I remember better times playing my EX5.
Yamaha have gone backwards since then.
And now I know everything I need to know about MODX ? 🤔
Excellent review of a wonderful musical instrument. Thank you!
That flashing light would get on my nerves quickly. I wouldn’t care how good it sounds, that’s a deal breaker for me!
Its really no big deal. You can easily switch it off!.
That's good to know! Could be a game changer.
Beautiful presentation! Although, the same cannot be said for the instrument itself which is rather a disappointment. Yamaha seems to have taken one step forward (FM engine) and two steps back (no proper sequencer and pattern mode) with MODX compared to its predecessor MOXF. As an owner of MOXF6 synth, I see no reason why I'd want to downgrade and give up on essential features that I use every day for a rather cheap sounding FM plugin.
I completely agree! I also have the MOXF6. I see no reason to buy the MODX. It’s no longer a workstation. If this had the same sequencing capabilities of the MOXF line, I’d consider the upgrade.
Does it have CS-80 sounds?
Some questions...hows the output sound quality? is it also "plastic"or same as montage? and the key size on the 6/7 are also narrow or normal this time?how about patches from the montage..will they upload without any issue here? thanks in advance
TreeOfLifeFestival official same sounds and quality from the montage !
I doubt it
its still unclear atm- lets wait and see - but all in all looks like good value for money
The build is all out of plastic. I don't care about that but I don't like the cheap Walmart plugs
@@mosesmedina6898 k
Tony. Everyone had a great question. But you never answered any. Please do.
It appears that MODX, like the Montage, is professionally CRIPPLED by the inability to assign the MIDI receive channel per part. I'm still in disbelief that this core functionality (necessary for programming splits and layers for external controllers, such as a second keyboard), was senselessly stripped from MODX and Montage, despite being present in EVERY OTHER flagship synth on the market, including Motif! Despite repeated and numerous complaints, Yamaha has done absolutely NOTHING to correct this oversight. Apparently, Yamaha simply no longer cares if you intend to use MODX or Montage as a master keyboard. Performing musicians, BEWARE!!!
Hi Bonners. I’m interested in this synth. From your video, the plastic finish doesn’t look too offensive, kind of matte, right?
All my other synths are made of metal, will this one fit in ok and not be too much of an eyesore? Thanks.
The finish looks very similar to that of the Montage, being a Gun-metal Grey. It should look fantastic amongst your other Synths.
It’s MO-DX - not MOD-X
It’s modx ...MODX....it says it on the keyboard...gees...GROW UP.
cds101 How about you grow up and accept the fact that it is pronounced moh-dee-ex? Geez...
Cuando yamaha y korg se propongan hacer una copia del roland xps 10...o xps30
Esto se va a poner bueno.
Nice
Hear the PLUNK of the cheap hollow plastic when he smacks the sides at 1:02! LOL....I miss the 90's when expensive keyboards were built like tanks and FELT like expensive keyboards! Nowadays even 'expensive' keyboards seem to have the same build quality as Yamaha PSRs and Casio CTKs and feel just as toy-like to play. You can hear the plastic creaking as he is hefting these 'amazingly lightweight' keyboards!
Yes, amazingly lightweight because it's CHEAP PLASTIC! Not even the good thick plastic that you'd find on a Kurzweil K2000, for example. I bet if you push down on the knobs and sliders you can feel the connecting shafts and circuit boards underneath bending and flexing as well.
to be fair, musical instrument prices have dropped in real value. something with the same dollar value as 1990 cost almost half in real terms. I don't say that as a defense for bad quality though because I also miss those proper 'built like tank' hardware from 90s and prior.
ron and wood if they would add these materials I imagine what would be the price of these tools yesterday looked at the store PSR S 970 wondered what to give 2000$ ? for plastic ? keys creak like a child's toy
I prefer plastic, it’s lighter. Never heard of anyone ever breaking the chassis on their plastic keyboards. Also don’t care if the chassis lasts a hundred years when the internals will be outdated long long before that. Go to Roland if you want eye candy
Adam Caldow: Have you ever owned Yamaha products? I 've owned a DX7, a DX5, a Motif 8, an MO6 and a Montage 7, have played and used Motif XS and XF as well as MOXF professionally. They are all built to handle the road. Yes the "midrange' synths are lighter so they need to use more plastic and less steel. How else would they be able to make them lighter. And believe me, you appreciate that light weight when you are loading in and out! But where it counts, these instruments are high quality. For my money, nobody beats Yamaha actions, whether weighted or synth action.
Adam Caldow In the 80s and 90s pro instruments costed you way more than they do today but the shell of the instrument is not what is the most important part in an instrument but what it does. It’s great to have a well built metal case that is a ton in weight but that brings the cost up. I owned Korg PA4X before and that had a metallic shell and it was a bit heavy but to be honest I never really paid any attention to it and only focused on the music. I owned 1980’s Roland equipment and yes built like a brick but even the smallest a nightmare to carry it around. Today cost and save money is the main objective for keyboard makers as people want to pay cheap prices but demand a lot.
SERIOUS QUESTION: who’s got s B3/Leslie simulation that gets close to the realism that Nord provides? I have owned Nords Electro and stage, Yamaha Motif, Korg SV1, Roland boards, and played dozens more...and every B3 w/122 sounds like crap compared to Nord. BTW Much more important to me than emulating a nylon string guitar or Bass clarinet.
Agree with you Uncle Willy. I too have owned Nord, most recently a 5D and curious if this new MODX has any kind of descent B3 emulation.... All too often these keyboard video reviews forget to include organ sounds, unless of course it's because they don't sound good.
@@bandwidth11 absolutely not! As a motif owner I wouldn't wouldn't even bother with Yamaha organ sounds as they are pure shit! If they have upgraded them you can bet they would have advertised it as it would be the first thing they're uppin the ante on in a long time.
Ironically logic has a very good B3 simulation in which you can modify much more parameters than the Nord (I own a 5D too) Try the SK1. You would have a much easier time pairing with Leslie technology then the Nord
Bacardi Jr. Thanks Bacardi Jr, I'm sure you're right. I use the Logic X B3 sim all the time in the studio and it kicks serious ass. My problem is that I'm primarily a guitar player but also play keys and I don't want to haul and entire keyboard rig with me to shows on top of a fairly complex guitar rig. I'm always hopeful to find some reasonably price keyboard that can do everything well, including Hammond stuff... Thx.
If you are looking for an authentic Organ sound then you really need to be looking at Hammond. Many others try to recreate the sound and the Leslie but do not quite manage it, although some get closer than others. Come and try out all of the different models in our Store and hear the difference for yourself!

MODX8
Half the price bu also half the number of Parts playing in a Performance. MODX is undoubtedly a great synthesizer, but the relationship is similar as it happened between MOXF and Motif XF. If we compare a MOXF with a MODX, it's obvious that the latter is way better. But if we compare a MODX with a Montage, the richness and sound complexity of the latter can't be beaten. At least until the next model will hit the market.
There is a youtube video where the two synths are played side by side and they sound identical.
g4macdad until the Performances are made up of maximum 4 Parts MODX and Montage (seem) sound the same, but no way when Performance are more complex.
Okay... But for the price, it is actually better. What about the Deepmind 12?
g4macdad MODX is an interesting instrument for a budget minded musician. Usually I don"t consider Behringer, expecially because they copy other famous musical instruments without discretion. I prefer drinking champagne not urine.
Correction... They copy famous instruments, that the original companies refuse to release. Behringer 808 is what we want, not the Roland toy they released.
