I have the modx8 and it blows my mind how much stuff you can do with this monster. I havent even scratched the surface of everything you can do with this instrument and I've had it over a year now! Incredible piece of tech
I just got my MODX8 from Kraft Music. Loving it . Just sold my MOX8 today also. Great timing. Kraft Music is the best Online Music store i have dealt with all these years.
This is a mind blow synth, with much more than I was thinking! The arrangements, studio and live possibilities are flooding my mind. Certainly, God made this MODX just for me, and no one else simply because I can actually understand the editing process LOL. I haven't been the sharpest tech tool in the box. Thank you so much, Blake, for the detailed tutorial.
@@evanstheophilusmuzulu7750 what bad things have you heard? I would say this machine is more than enough for most professionals, and the improved portability is welcome. The Montage is very niche now that MODX and MODX+ are available. That should be reserved for high-end studios.
Blake, I upgraded from the MOXF8 to the MODX8. I love everything except the transpose buttons. When you've transposed the keyboards in half steps (not octaves), there's no indication that the transpose function is active. No lights are on and there's no indication on the touch screen. The next update to the firmware should include a line of text at the top of the touch screen to indicate how many half steps are actively being transposed (it flashes on the touch screen for a few seconds and then goes away). Or, use half-bright lights on the up/down transpose buttons for half steps, in addition to the full-bright lights when octave transpose is active.
I needed to comment, I've seen lots of your videos and have to say you are a very talented musician and salesman. It's a pleasure listening to your music and recommendations.
Superb, clear and informative tutorial, Blake, thank you. My MODX7 arrived this morning and am looking forward to getting quickly into some basic editing and control set-ups, thanks to you. :-)
I noticed that Blake says Valium instead of volume. Otherwise, great demo! Glad to see this instrument has so much support online with many tutorials by many different people! I have a MODx6 and love it. The rhythm assign is difficult for me: I get that you have a bunch of drum sets. But did not see Blake add percussion to the set he picked out. Wondering if that's possible...
Never understood why modern day keyboards don't have a phone style number pad (0-9) for fast input of a particular sound. Nowadays, you have go thru 3-4 clicks at a minimum to find a the instrument you want unless you have it programmed into a bank. If I want guitar sound #328, I should be able to just hit a sound button, then punch 328 and voila. Had that on my 35 yr old Kurzweil and don't understand why most keyboards don't have it today.
yes i totaly aggree with you, i have made that same comment on many youtube videos. though the kronos, which i own, does have the 0-9 keypad you can select a no. on keypad and press enter to select the sound. but the kronos goes even further as it has a set list mode where you can access up to 128 perfomances [ combies] with only a few button presses and there are 128 banks of the set list function. also many roland keyboards have quick access buttons where you can quickly select 100 favorites. this problem is one reason that i dont buy many otherwise excelent keyboards, pericuarly wouldnt buy most anologe keyboards as most patch selection on most of them is turning a dial, and for me as a live player need quick access to many sounds, so i understan exactly what you are going on about..
I'm buying one for my studio and this video.... I will watch and play along with as soon as I get it to power up. It does so much that it will require much research/practice but the dividends it will pay if it holds up will be incredible for me. I have $77 more to save to buy it. I hope they offer insurance on its delivery.
Thank you Blake for this great video. Could or would you please do a video on how to change mod wheel on organ parts from slow to fast or visa-versa and change the rotor speeds. Would greatly appreciate it.
Great video Blake! An amazing keyboard. Upgraded from my Moxf8 and love it as a lightweight 88 note keyboard.Your concise and well narrated instructions have assisted me greatly in transitioning from Moxf8 and particularly constructing a Performance. Keep the tutorials coming! Kudos to Yamaha for bringing out an affordable and lightweight alternative to the Montage for the gigging musician who lugs their own gear. Could you do one on how to import Bosendorfer piano and how to edit organ sounds? Thanks so much. Greetings from Australia.
I bought this board and have only ONE gripe...the built-in sequencer. It's not as easy to operate, nor was the thought behind it the same as the Motif/MO series. I wonder why Yamaha changed the functionality of their built-in recording system? That's what I thought I was getting when I bought this board. But I do love the sounds. And I've finally gotten used to the recorder, but it really doesn't play as nice as the former series. Forget a step? And you have to start all over again. I can't even find how to save it in .wav form. It only saves in .midi unless you record in the single track .wav form. Why? I can simply do that in my computer's software package. Yamaha took some steps back on their internal recording piece with this board.
Why doesn't Yamaha have samples of their iconic CP30 Electronic piano in their soundbank? There were two banks (left and right) each that had four sounds for a total of eight sound settings on the CP30 that you could select and combine in any combination. Yamaha could provide a sample of each of the individual eight sounds that the Montage/MODX user could then combine like on the CP30. That piano had much better sound than on any Rhodes piano.....
While I plan on buying one of these, the “Super Knob” strikes me as gimmicky and not as useful as designers may have had in mind. When you’re in the middle of an involved passage, you can’t take your hands off the keys to twist a knob! It’s size and placement make it an ideal item to get banged and broken in the process of taking to/from rehearsals and shows. Since all those functions can be assigned to an expression pedal that you’re more likely to use, I see it more as a sales gimmick than a tool that makes a musician’s life easier. That said, this board looks like it has all the right stuff for a gigging musician. Montage is obviously a bit better, but who wants to lug around a 63-pound instrument?
I take your point about the 'super knob'. And the first thing I'd do is to assign an expression pedal to replace its' use, on the whole. I haven't been able to see one in the flesh as yet, but all the video demo's seem to show the thing almost randomly flashing - nothing discernible in following the set tempo - fortunately you can turn down the brightness. I suspect the concept comes from the synth world, where swinging on the filter knob is a popular thing. The 'super knob' is a filter knob on steroids. The only thing holding me back in buying a MODX8 is the sequencer. I know Yamaha have just released an update that improves it over the original scratchpad, but it's still not as good as the sequencer on my MotifXS.
@@kurtklingklang5918 I got the MODX 8 and I really have no use for that Super Knob in any live setting (so far). All my parameter changes are assigned to the foot pedal. One question Does this keyboard have Integrated on board performance sequencer.... Can I produce tracks with the drum programs and the other sounds in this keyboard from this keyboard... do I need to connect the keyboard to my Mac and use logic Pro X
Yes, it does have a song, or performance, sequencer. The new update to the OS (version 2) improves the sequencer over the original version. I think it could still be better, but it is eminently possible to produce a complete track on the MODX alone. I may have been spoilt by the sequencer in the MotifXS, which I have yet to see bettered on a synth.
HELP with my MODX6 please! SO.S So, when I play at rapid velocity or hit 5 or 6 keys at the same time the sound cuts off until i let go of some of the keys and then the others wil sound just fine. I bought my Modx about a week ago. Is this normal, should I return or exchange it? Please help
It's not as bad as it might seem - the dial works well, plus double-clicking on a value opens up a number pad which can make it quick for known values. For live patch tweaking, there's the assignable knobs and quick edit modes, which change values on a relative basis rather than changing the underlying patch values. As Blake mentioned, there's also quite a bit of redundant navigation, which helps to speed up getting to common sections from logical jump-off points. I'm not sitting here wishing I had a VST editor while I'm making patches.
I guess it never occurred to you, that the reason the MOXF had a VST editor, was due to the miniscule display of the MOXF?Actually, the 7" full color touchscreen of the MODX,is a light-year leap ahead of the MOXF...but that's not good enough for you,is it?.In addition to the MODX's amazing display, you also get the very same sound engines and all of the presets and effects of the Montage for a drastically reduced price and yet,you complain about the lack of a VST editor which is totally unnecessary....WTF is wrong with you?
I wish Yamaha did the MODX with a 10 "WVGA color TFT display instead of the diminute 7" WVGA color TFT? I dont care if I need to pay an extra $ 150, but 7 "inches? 2018? Really ... Also in MODX 8, on the right side where there are no buttons, put a simple support so that the laptop or tablet does not move when we play live. 1
One more question. These keyboards are supposed to have "seamless" changing between sounds. When I am picking sounds from my User Live Set, sometimes they change seamlessly and sometimes they don't. Why is that?
Only the sounds with less than 4 parts will seemlessly change. These are identified in the category screen with a little sss icon next to them. Near where FM-X and AM2 is shown.
I've been pleasantly surprised at just how well it does analog sounds. it comes with some useful analog synth raw waveforms, and there are some more free ones on yamahasynth.com (the cs80 ones are very nice). The filters too are pretty impressive given this isn't being sold as a VA. Obviously you can't do fun stuff like oscillator sync and crossmod, but that is baked in to some of the raw samples.
Where would I go to tell me how to physically connect up my Modx8 to soundmondo, using my iPad, I’ve purchased the Apple camera connector, my USB cable, I downloaded the soundmondo app and set the keyboard to USB midi but it still won’t sync. HELP !

I wish he'd play the thing and let the viewers watch & listen to the sounds rather than talking all the time. The keyboard comes with a manual. No need to spend time talking about what to get where.

I had no luck with this Yamaha Modx 8. This instrument started to click on the keys 3 weeks after the purchase. After longer programming, the display has stopped freezing. I had to send it back. Poor plastic box. Clever Montage copy.I'm sorry because the inner part and the sound generator are excellent. I'm going to Nord.
Lajos Mészáros the nord is nowhere near the features as this modx. But if you only want sounds, then yeah the nord will do. If you want a workstation than the nord is a no no
@Lajos: Thats a somewhat weird ending of your comment, considering that you must have taken the MODX for a reason, which I assume someone who knows what he is doing, for example would choose a MODX over a Montage for financial reasons, otherwise if one doesnt have to care about the price, might as well go with the expensive solution. But then you end it with commenting going to Nord, which is as expenisve on that level like Montage. Or even more. Doesnt really fit together your determination.
@@OLDM4N-DE I bought the Modx because it was very good in weight and satisfying my needs, but because I couldn't handle the wrinkles I had to buy a more durable instrument that has hammer mechanics and is in weight. David Dude, wtf hell is wrong with you guys?! You put like it doesn’t have an actual keyboard, geez! It’s very affordae and a monster of a synth, if you want aftertouch you can use a pedal. Damn, man.
If you look at the direct competitors, the Korg Krome and Roland FA series (and also the Yamaha MOXF), they all don't have it. We're still on a budget in this price range, and you just have to cut some features or you end up with your 3k Montage in no time.
they are not the same features.MONTAGE has better converters, much more hands on controls, more polyphony on the FM synthesis and other goodies.Montage has metal chasis,MODX plastic, but so what,it depends on what you're looking for.MODX is very light weight,MONTAGE weighs a lot more, but I suppose for the majority of people out there the MODX is a GOD sent gift ,which will satisfy the needs of many.

Is there a way to produce loops using few notes that may be repeated ?
I want to save 8 scene button with 8 different tones. Kindly share video how to store..
2:22 the superknobb can also be annoying.....its blinking alot 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why not have a balanced action like the Montage? Seems like all of the "cheaper" keyboards have graded action.
key action costs more $$$
funny comment. that's the difference in cost.
Just ordered one of these, can't wait!
Isn't this Item available For India Via Kraft Music Website?
no aftertouch :(
HELP with my MODX6 please! SO.S

How to create fat synth in MODX?
Layer multiple synths in a performance, detune some, add effects.
May rythmics patterns be edited or created from scratch ?
The lack of the vst editor is a big step backwards from MOXF. Editing on a small screen + one dial circle it must be very tedious.
*Use a Stylus for that and its Fun ;)*

@@HighlandStudio91 the same editor was also for Motif XS and Motif XF, both with big screens.
Anyone knows how he build the sound from 16:50-17:45? I think he calls it Blake Orchestrall.
Does it have a audio interface built in?
MR PONFAR M yes it does.
Great info Blake ! Just curious about the MODX capability to create analog lead synth sounds like Pink Floyd/Manfred Mann etc, Moog kind of .. ?
HELP !
I think you should be able to plug your iPad directly to the MODX as it has a USB device port.
does it come with internal Speakers? the modx7?
yoda elliot nope, none of the yamaha workstations (besides the genos) have internal speakers
NOOOOO!
NO... you have to use Headphone or monitor speakers...
The MODX8 does the same key action with YAMAHA DGX660 ?...thanks...

I wish he'd play the thing and let the viewers watch & listen to the sounds rather than talking all the time. The keyboard comes with a manual. No need to spend time talking about what to get where.
That's why we create "All Playing, No Talking!" videos :) We actually have two "music only" videos for MODX. Check these out:

Only 1 GIGABYTE of user space is a shame . This should have at least 8 gigabytes possibility of expansion . I mean is this really that hard to put 2 ram slots in there ??. And I will gladly buy 2 ram sticks .Such a shame ....
does the unit connect to a DAW Automatically?ie all channels ect
russell steel cubase for sure, this one even includes an AI version of it
I had no luck with this Yamaha Modx 8.
If you want a workstation than the nord is a no no
@Lajos:
Thats a somewhat weird ending of your comment, considering that you must have taken the MODX for a reason, which I assume someone who knows what he is doing, for example would choose a MODX over a Montage for financial reasons, otherwise if one doesnt have to care about the price, might as well go with the expensive solution. But then you end it with commenting going to Nord, which is as expenisve on that level like Montage. Or even more. Doesnt really fit together your determination.
If you have money for a Nord, why u came to MODX??? Nonsense...
Found the Nord Rep.
@@OLDM4N-DE I bought the Modx because it was very good in weight and satisfying my needs, but because I couldn't handle the wrinkles I had to buy a more durable instrument that has hammer mechanics and is in weight. Nord Stage 3 HP 76 met these requirements. I also thought about Montage 88, but who has the power and power to carry a 30kg instrument for the concert ?!
Fantástico!
And no AfterTouch.
Deal breaker.
David Dude, wtf hell is wrong with you guys?! You put like it doesn’t have an actual keyboard, geez! It’s very affordae and a monster of a synth, if you want aftertouch you can use a pedal. Damn, man.
David what is aftertouch
Can it recieve after touch and respond from a controller with it, Like the $399 midi keyboards that do have it?
Once you learn how to play you won't need that.
If you look at the direct competitors, the Korg Krome and Roland FA series (and also the Yamaha MOXF), they all don't have it. We're still on a budget in this price range, and you just have to cut some features or you end up with your 3k Montage in no time.
Whats the difference between Montage and MODX?. Why should I pay 1000 dollars more when MODX has the same features?.
they are not the same features.MONTAGE has better converters, much more hands on controls, more polyphony on the FM synthesis and other goodies.Montage has metal chasis,MODX plastic, but so what,it depends on what you're looking for.MODX is very light weight,MONTAGE weighs a lot more, but I suppose for the majority of people out there the MODX is a GOD sent gift ,which will satisfy the needs of many.
MONTAGE is heavier ... so you are paying for Weight lol
@@NyashaKeys absolutely👍
Also, the MODX does not have aftertouch, while the Montage does.
This is not a tutorial you are selling the keyboard. No use to me as a beginner wanting to learn it.
Great video! Is it possible to tune the modx to 432 hz?
Yes, I am 100% certain you can do that.
How do you set up the A/D input to control arpeggios that actually WORKS??? Lots of incomplete info out there. So far, I can't get it to function as described.

I bought me a plastic toy... ;) modx6 I couldn't resist. Lol
Clavier qui ne coûte pas cher, avec lequel l'on peut faire de la bonne musique,et cela reste le principal.Bonne continuation musicale et vive la musique pour tous.
Actually, the Yamaha Tyros is a toy, the Yamaha MODX is a professional synthesizer.
Theret Music VEVO tu as raison mon amie!!! Ne lui ecoute pas il est un connard
Patrick Saxon The Tyros is overrated honestly
