I love this song, but I think it’s sad that so many young people don’t even realize who they are seeing in the images shown… John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, the crew of the Challenger, Keith Whitley, and many more. Such important, powerful, and talented people who left a lasting impression on our lives.

In this song, Garth makes a statement that it is best not to know how things will end, because if you do then you may deprive yourself of certain experiences: You might miss the pain, but you also might miss the dance. The dance = moments in life.

My first husband died when our daughter was 3, my daughter is My Dance, I could have missed the pain of loosing my husband so young, but I'd have missed the dance of our daughter. I saw Garth in concert and held up my sign that said My daughter is My Dance, while he sang The Dance, he pointed at me, put his hands up in the air like he was holding a sign, and touched his heart , one of my favorite memories.

I am oddly accepting of all of this. I would much rather her be here with me and the rest of her family surrounded with love and be here to help her with any little thing that she needs as opposed to having to put her in a nursing home for the rest of her days and not being able to be by her side throughout this entire process with the assistance of home hospice care.

This song is speaks to loss in the same way that the phrase “better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all” does. But I think in the context of the video, and maybe it’s greater meaning is that people like MLK and JFK…had they known how the roads they chose would end, would still have chosen to continue their life’s work on that road because in the end, it was worth it to them to try to make the world a better place. They laid down their lives to leave the world better than they found it.

It's been just over 24 hours since I lost my dad. He was in the hospital since Halloween with COVID. He was doing better until he developed a brain bleed and clot that gave him seizures that essentially fried his brain till all that we knew of him, his humor, his personality, his character, was gone. He was nothing more than a shell that was kept alive by machines. So my family spent the day with him, and when we couldn't be there any longer, we left. We ate as a family, and then my brother and sister returned a couple hours later to be there for him so he wasn't alone. They held his hands, and sang "It Is Well With My Soul", and as they finished the song, he had his last breath as if on cue.
My mom and dad met at my grandfather's funeral, and he asked her out that day. My dad and my mom dated for 8 years before I was on the way, and I always reminded them of their wedding picture, and that I was there at the beginning of their marriage in that picture. They went on to have my brother, and my sister, later a grand-daughter, and later even two grand-sons. He couldn't have been a prouder grandpa! During his stay in the hospital, we found out he would be a great-grandpa! He loved his family, but rarely said it, he showed it. He was a humble man, a quiet and reserve man, a hard working man, a man that never wanted conflict, he was patient, he was always attentive to our needs before his own, he always let us pursue our dreams, even if he knew they weren't likely to succeed. He was my dad, and I am supremely proud to be his son, and to be like him. My mom and dad dated for 8 years, married for 46 years, for a total of 54 years together, and they stayed together the whole time with no conflicts, but lots of love and patience. He knew the value of love and didn't cheapen it by over-using the words as everyone else does, and when he said it, it had some REAL power to it.
This song is probably one of the best songs of Garth's career, and I've loved it since I first heard it when the album came out and it got radio play. It always used to choke me up, but now it makes me shed a hard tear, because I didn't miss "The Dance" with my dad. I can't tell you how much my dad and I did together, how much I learned from him, or how much life we shared, but it was a beautiful dance to have with someone you love, admire, respect, and cherish. I'm missing him terribly, and will till it is time for me to "go home" to see him.

There are so many amazing songs he has performed over the decades. And "The Dance" is absolutely a punch to the gut with the realization that we don't know how this journey ends. Would we change things if we knew it may end in pain and is it worth exchanging the amazing moments to avoid the pain? It is a gut punch...

He had a very bad Relationship with his first wife. But he got his son out of it.
Therefore, he wouldn't miss it on the pain of that relationship, because he would have missed out on the gift of my step-brother.

Wow, that MLK part really hit me hard. Garth was talking about MLK leading a movement and being killed, leaving his children and wife behind. I have heard this song but never seen the video. That was crazy powerful. I teared up instantly.

Seeing Lane Frost always feels like a sucker punch to the gut, then the crew of the Challenger.... My dad worked on the fuel tanks for that shuttle, then soon found himself in a deadly battle with cancer. He left this world never knowing that he and his shift would be cleared of any wrong doing, so he needlessly carried that responsibility with him to his grave.

Thank you for doing this song! I posted a request in the comments of your reaction to Standing Outside The Fire yesterday. This song really means a lot, as it reminds me of my parents who I lost almost 2 years ago. The song always hit hard, but after losing them, it was amplified by a billion...I knew BYSE would enter the chat, but I'm glad that you enjoyed the song, and enjoying Garth as a singer. Kudos to you Billy. Thanks again.

I just did a painting of the words of this song over the weekend. It's hung up on the wall of my livingroom. I did it for my fiancée that died of colon cancer.

Many don’t understand this song. This song is about your life choices. We make choices, for those people that come into our life they are in essence our dance partner. We choose to have a dance with them. We could choose another way of life but if we do we wouldn’t have had these people or experiences with them in our life. So don’t regret the choice because you got to experience life with them while they were here. You chose the Dance.

When I hear this song, I always think of my best friend Jimmy. Jimmy and I were like brothers. He was a junior, and I a senior in high school. We did everything together, and this song was his favorite. Jimmy was killed in a car accident three months before he would have graduated High School. We'd planned to go to the same college, and when I found out... it just broke me.

The Dance says, to me anyway, that the road you've got to take to get where you're going may be a rough one, but once you reach your destination, you realize it was worth it and you'd do it all over again.

This is my go-to song when I lose someone precious to me. I could choose to keep people (and pets) at arms length so it doesn't hurt so much when I lose them, but oh, I would miss that joyful dance of being open and loving and being loved in return. No trade-off there. I'll take the happiness of the dance, even if it hurts when it ends. Oh, how I love Garth's music and heart! ❤

Yesterday was 24 years ago that my father took his life. I was just 16. A week before he died he danced in my living room with me to this song. I am sitting here in tears listening to this song. We also played it at his funeral. This just showed up as a suggestion to listen to today. Someone from up above sent this to me. Thank you.

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared ‘neath the stars above
For a moment, all the world was right
How could I have known that you’d ever say goodbye
    And now, I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could’ve missed the pain but I’d have had to miss the dance
    Holding you, I held everything
    For a moment, wasn’t I a king
But if I’d only known how the king would fall
Hey now who’s to say, you know I might have changed it all
    And now, I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could’ve missed the pain but I’d have had to miss the dance
Yes my life, it’s better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I’d have had to miss the dance

You go through the pain of loss, but while you are having the pain, and we all have gone through loss, and we all feel loss,But we can look through our memories, And afterall, that is life. We are born, we live and we die to live again. The ones that we leave behind are missing the dance
