Two things I really admire about Snake Discovery are that a) you're open, honest, and educational about what to do when things go wrong, such as here when a baby snake was just not compatible with life; and b) when something goes wrong, you always look into why it happened and report your findings, including any mistakes you may have made and how you're going to improve practices going forward. The personal and scientific integrity that shows is a big part of why I keep coming back to this channel. I'm sad for the poor kinked/fused baby, but take comfort in knowing that it went as peacefully and painlessly as was possible given the situation. Thank you, Emily and Ed, for always striving to make the best possible decisions for your animals' quality of life and death, and for helping others know how to do the same.
I know this was filmed before recent events, but I hope Ed recovers quickly and isn't in pain from his appendectomy! Loved the adorable babies, shame about that one but thank you for being so upfront and honest that breeding doesn't always go perfectly and for humanely helping that little guy pass! ❣️
Oh no, I didn’t know Ed had to have an appendectomy! I had one back in 2022, appendicitis is so painful, but luckily the recovery process from the surgery isn’t too terribly bad.
Oh, that poor baby. It's so sad... they was a fighter until the end. It's unfortunate how they had such a huge kink. The fused body is just adding salt to the wound. Rest in peace, Milksnake number 4.
I love how Chicken Wing realizes one of Emily’s fingers isn’t food, but she has to sample every other finger *just* in case one of them *is* actually food
4 years of watching snake discovery, and i just realized that Emily is giving c-sections to the eggs in case the baby snakes cant get out on their own!
I always appreciate that you guys don’t hide the sad and more “unpleasant” aspects of breeding. Breeding is amazing and fascinating, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows so I’m glad you don’t try to pretend that it is
i appreciate that you took such quick action to minimize the pain of the fused one instead of letting it harm itself, and that you stopped to figure out what went wrong incubating and how to improve it. that shows real care for both the snakes and proper education anout them.
I managed to get a baby Eastern Milksnake off a glue trap at work and brought it to the vet at our local wildlife center to get checked out before releasing it. He said they eat invertebrates until they get big enough for rodents.
I think they want them eating rodent parts so that they don’t have to switch them from slugs to rodents as the snakes get bigger. In those situations there’s going to be some snakes that insist on not wanting to eat rodents and it’s a big pain training them that this is their food now. It’s probably easier to start with rodents so that the smell is similar at all stages of their lives and they’re more likely to continue eating well for their next owners.
@@Annie_Annie__Well, yes, of course. It makes perfect sense to feed rodent parts in this case but they asked what they would be eating in the wild. I’m just repeating what the vet told me. 🤷♀️
It's so shocking how the baby with mold on it had such a mild kink to it, very able to survive and thrive and yet the egg that was perfectly fine (and one could argue the healthiest being separated from the moldy egg) had a deformity so extremely terrifying and sad. Imagine your belly and legs being fused but you're still somehow able to rip yourself open in your attempt to survive, that's so scary... Also yay!!! Im early!!!
With that huge fusion kink, makes me wonder if originally there were twins in it, but one got absorbed into the other sibling thus produced the fusion kink 🤔

Really appreciate that you guys follow up on experiments, especially with that being the first time breeding that species, and learn from mistakes, which inevitably happen as we go thru life. Mistakes are gonna happen, all we can do is choose what we learn from them.
Thank you for sharing the real ups and downs of snake breeding, and being so forthright about how animals that won’t survive are still cared for with dignity and grace. It’s a tough world out there for a noodle with a head. Feel better soon, Ed! ❤
Just wanted to say I SO appreciate the honesty and transparency that you two put into these videos. It can be so tempting to shelter people from the realities of life and death, but it doesn’t help anything not to prepare ourselves for those situations as best we can and to deal with them in the kindest way possible to the animal. Sometimes euthanasia is a kindness, and it’s our responsibility as keepers to save the animal from suffering further when it’s plainly obvious they physically cannot survive. The more we can face reality, the better we can prepare to reduce harm as much as possible. Emily remained curious about the science behind why that snake developed the way it did, and that allowed her to learn and grow and become a better keeper.
@@MyRegardsToTheDodo Reminds me of the baby Milksnakes from last year, the ones that escaped in the incubator. They were all biting and chewing - so determined, even though they couldn't even fit a pinky finger in their mouth 😆.

Find it interesting from a biology/nature studies POV that it was the two eggs that needed to be cut where the babies had major kinks/passed away in the egg. Shame that you had to learn the hard way if it was the incubation temps being to high, but you know what they say, every day is a school day. Fingers crossed for next year🤞

That was so sad. Thank you for not letting that poor baby hurt himself. Glad some of the babies still made it. Fingers crossed for better luck next year. ❤
So unfortunate about the two that didn't make it, but at least the other three hatched out relatively healthy and in good shape (aside from the minor kinks)! I'd bet the higher than normal temp they were incubated at is the culprit of the problems, so fingers crossed that the survivors thrive under your care and that next years clutch has better success.
Happy to see the first hatching video this season! Oof on the kink/survival odds tho :( Thank you for being open and honest with your breeding. Maybe in nature, eastern milksnake mommas go deeper into caves for cooler incubation temps?
For your first year breeding this species, 2 out of 5 healthy babies is pretty impressive. As you said, always more to learn and keep in mind for next breeding season. I hope our little kinky baby is able to thrive and go to a good home!
I absolutely love how transparent Emily is. Many breeders wouldn’t admit that they made a mistake with incubating the babies at an abnormal temperature for this species, but snake discovery is totally transparent about their breeding practices. Good or bad. This is an amazing learning experience about a species that not many people have had the chance to breed. We as humans learn by others mistakes. Thank you for showing the realities of breeding. It’s a good reminder that, despite our best efforts, things can go wrong and we must be prepared to deal with it.
Thanks for sharing even the unpleasant parts. I had wondered about humane euthanasia of the deformed babies, but was kinda afraid to ask (or even Google it). I’m glad you have humane procedures for when it has to happen. This is a great, informative and entertaining channel! Hatching videos are my favorite.
The day this video was posted was my birthday and when i saw it this completed my birthday because of Emily's positivity. I have been watching snake discovery since 2017
Please be warned! One of the babies is unfortunately malformed and is unable to have a good quality of life! Emily helps open the egg fully for the baby to get out, starting at roughly 13:46. If this upsets you as a viewer or it makes you nauseated, you can skip to 14:46 and the close up will have passed!
I'm so sorry for the loss of the 2 babies. I hope the one with the kink does really well. I saw another comment, so I went and looked. I hope Ed is healing well and quickly!💙💙
I know this video was recorded before recent events, but I hope Ed is doing well. I love baby videos.❤ Thank you for being honest about the malformed baby.
Hmm, with the super kinked/fused baby coming from a “healthy” egg and the possibility of issues caused by the incubation temp, I suspect that the smallest baby was the one that hatched from the moldy egg, not the one with the minor kink! I’m also curious to know if the baby that died in the egg had any kinks/deformities, which could explain why it didn’t make it… If so, that would support my theory that the tiny baby is the moldy egg baby, since obviously the whole clutch was susceptible to developing issues regardless of the condition of the eggs. …Actually, I almost wonder if the moldy egg might’ve had an advantage?? If the issues were caused by a higher incubation temp, I wonder if it basically caused the babies to grow too quickly (especially because they started pipping way ahead of schedule) which led to things like the skin developing after the babies were big enough to be squished more tightly against themselves, hence the fusing… In which case, if the moldy egg’s growth was at all stunted, perhaps that sort of… kept it from growing too fast, like the others? I don’t know, I’m not a herpetologist! I don’t even know if that’s why a higher incubation temp is a problem, I’m just guessing!

So glad you added that epilogue at the end - everything makes sense now! Hatching five days early, 2/5 healthy snakes, and the kinks!

You know it’s gonna be a good day when snake discoveries post!!!! Why do we need an appendix when it just ruptures?! I was in the hospital a little bit ago and I thought it was my appendix but it was not!
Hello Emily, reminding you that today is Snake Day 🐍🥳, congratulations to all your scaly and cute friends, I am a fan of your program, congratulations 🥳🎉
Chocolate is now a major food group. who would have known, not sugar/carbs, just chocolate.
love seeing you guys's uploads, been watching your channel for a while now and you always cheer my day up!
i've been having a rough day as im struggling socially and also got fired. so seeing this in my notifs really cheered me up.
thank you for being so amazing and keep up the great work!
Thank you for showing the realities of breeding. It’s a good reminder that, despite our best efforts, things can go wrong and we must be prepared to deal with it.
I love watching the hatching videos, baby snakes are too cute! I’m so glad I found your channel!
Poor babyyyyyyyy 4. 😢😢😢 May your soul have safe passage to the stars 💜💜
I like moldy. regardless of the kink. Fast recovery and good vibes for Ed I hope he is doing good.

Emily: they are very good eaters Chicken wing: let me show you “bites Emily’s finger”
The day this video was posted was my birthday and when i saw it this completed my birthday because of Emily's positivity. I have been watching snake discovery since 2017
OMG THEY HATCHED ON MY BIRTHDAY 🥳 ❤❤❤❤❤❤I LOVE SNACKS but my parents hate them I LOVE MILK SNACKS!❤
Aw I feel bad for that fused baby, seeing him try and separate at least shows he’s a fighter. RIP
I love snakes🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍
YES. BEFORE ONE HOUR MARK.
JUST FRICKIN' MADE IT!!!! LET'S GOOOO!
I love watching your baby hatch videos with my kiddos! Babies!!
Yay! love from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Wow, what are the odds! Another Tassie viewer!
I love spending my morning watching 🐍 snake discovery 🐍 and i feel bad for that one fused baby snake 🐍
Just woke up, first thing I saw on my food was babies batching. Great day already
Yeah I think they have a lower incubation temperature than Emily is used to
How exciting 🙌🙌🙌 hello from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Little fact: New Zealand do not have snakes lol
Poor baby thank you for helping them pass peacefully
Love how nonchalant Emily is to being bitten by a milk snake. Just “oh it’s biting me” I’m guessing it doesn’t hurt much.
BABY VIDEOS FINALLY 🐍❤️
