  • This clutch has many confusing levels- These babies don't look quite sable, but they don't look quite axanthic either... What are they?! Also, did the egg that Umbra (their mother) attempted eating make it? Find out in today's video!

    It never ceases to amaze me that, despite my dad not being a reptile person, whenever I see a new hatching video, my first instinct after watching is to immediately run to his room (he's 95 so spends most of his time in bed) and announce 'We've got [insert baby snake breed here]!' and I no longer even have to tell him what I'm talking about. He automatically knows I mean you guys have posted about new snake babies. He's even starting to take interest in things like when I told him about the patched egg. You've singlehandedly turned him into a snake fan!

    Thanks for the dissection, it's actually fascinating to not only know that a punctured egg can survive, but to also be able to see what things develop first, like how the pigments don't develop equally (now it makes sense that there's so many morphs). And I agree that it was probably a coincidence that it didn't make it, if the puncture was the problem it would have gone bad way earlier. Could also have been something influenced by the patch but not the patch itself (maybe bacteria and fungi had easier access? or maybe it lost too much yolk/moisture)
    also that's some lovely variation on the condas, varied morphs are my favorite

    A little note to the experiment, I would maybe try cracking open chicken eggs, letting the inside of the shell dry, and take the skin from that to see if that would help better. Or using it while it's still wet might work too as a "glue"

      Do snakes have antibodies that would attack that like an organ transplant might? Using just the shell sounds like it might work since it is mostly just calcium. Not sure about that skin layer you’re talking about. I think some scientists added a window to shark eggs, so they look into that research to see how they added the windows. From what i remember, those eggs did continue to develop normally.

    I'd say paper towel was probably a bad choice of patch material, you could see that there was fungus growing on it because it's basically just wet dead wood. Personally I'd suggest just a piece of bandaid, it's designed from the ground up to do what you want, it's breathable, nontoxic, bacteria and fungus resistant, won't really deteriorate or decay.

    • @crystallidgard9270
      @crystallidgard9270 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Wouldn’t the ones who inherited one copy just be het sable, since sable isn’t a dominant gene, so it wouldn’t show with just one copy?

    • @LoneIrbis
      @LoneIrbis 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +14

      @@crystallidgard9270 I'm guessing it depends on how exactly it's expressed. Some recessive genes can still be detected by some minor signs, others not so much.
      I breed pigeons, can give a few examples:
      1) recessive red in pigeons can still express as 1 copy on pigeons with bronze gene - it makes bronze brighter and more red in tone.
      2) male pigeons who carry blue/black + ash red color would often have tiny black stripes on their tail and wing feathers that are otherwise grey in tone in ash red. That's because ash red is dominant, but black would still seep through on big feathers where grey fails to be expressed. That doesn't apply to female pigeons since they only get one or the other.
      3) feathery feet are recessive, but one copy would still show up as tiny "slippers"
      4) frillbacks are very complicated combo of recessive genes, but if you outcross frillback to other breed, first gen babies (carriers of 1 copy of each gene) would have barely visible frills on their wing shields.
      Some of those might count as partially dominant, but in most cases it's just because dominant gene counterpart fails to be expressed in some cells, and that's where recessive works as "backup". Of course I can't say for sure how things are for sable gene in snakes, since that would take some massive research, but can easily see how it can be slightly poking through the dominant normal gene on that first baby skin that developed in the egg and doesn't last for long, so it could have less accurate gene expressions in general.

    I wonder if liquid bandage would work in combination with the paper towel to patch an egg? Since it's meant to keep our goopy bits (blood) inside and might work better to keep goopy egg white inside the shell rather than elmers glue since glue is water based and might not dry with the water content in the egg as well as the ambient humidity.

    For some reason, even though I know you love pokemon, I wasn't expecting a quote from The Indigo League in the anime.
    But definitely love Umnumbra as a new name/nickname. Also that's super interesting that the glue and paper towel trick worked!

    I'm actually so impressed that the patched egg developed that far! It shows how resilient eggs can be, when I guess normally we associate them with being so delicate and fragile. And what weird babies, I'd be so curious to see how they get on as they age.

    I would be curious about a couple of factors with the baby that developed but didn't finish. I'm curious if once he grew large enough the patch sort of "failed" a little, let something get into the egg late into development that made it fail, or let too much moisture out. So it held strong up until that point, which might mean a slightly better patch material would do better in the future if something happened again. Something with a little more give in it that still has breathability. Or even reinforcing the patch mid development, or something similar.

    you should cut the paper towel roll (like the whole role) down to the width of the bins. Then you wouldnt have to rib them to size and have overlaps. just a thought.

    Have you considered using the kind of nontoxic paint pens that bearded dragon breeders use to tell babies apart when they're really similar looking? If you put a little dot on one of their head/neck, you wouldn't need to try to memorize headstamps!

    Just a little question, do you guys happen to have snakes legal to own in Australia? I’m generally asking because there are two snakes you can own in Australia, where I live, and my girlfriend and I absolutely love snakes.

    • @The-one-and-only-Fruitcake
      @The-one-and-only-Fruitcake 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Children’s pythons are good starters, and native to Australia (therefore legal to keep)
      Just remember that you need a license to own snakes and you have to buy locally, since you can’t import animals in or out of Australia. Go to a local reptile expo sometime, they should have a good selection of snakes for you

  • @damienvaughn5608

    I’m not sure if I’ve left this comment before but I really like Umbra’s name
    It always reminds me of a weapon from a video game that was said to be a fully sentient sword with the ability to influence those who wield it and it had the enchantment to entrap souls when using it
    A snake that eats her own babies being named after a soul trapping sentient sword just feels like destiny for her

  • @robo-birdie2248
    @robo-birdie2248 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    Umbras a cool name; it's Latin for shadow or ghost. In the Elder Scrolls franchise Umbra is the name of a sentient entity that takes the form most often of some form of sword, the other is a shadowy cloaked and hooded human like form, where it takes over the minds of its wielder making them go crazy and think they are Umbra and as a weapon it steals health and stamina from its victims giving it to the wielder.

    Fascinating how far patched egg baby came development wise!
    These babies were so cheeky, appearing one way and then changing after the shed 😂
