I was really surprised by how funny this show is. The Penguin complaining about pickles in his hamburger while they're disposing of a body is so morbidly hilarious.

Cristin Milioti is terrifying. I love the subtle mix of Batman eras and genres. My first Penguin was Burgess Meredith - that's re-runs in the 1980's prime for me. Colin Ferrell is great as The Penguin. Gotham looks great.
I kind of was imagining/wishing they get Gina Carano for Sophia. I blame the animated movie.

It might be too early to tell but I'm going to go ahead and say it. Colin Ferrel is to the Penguin. What Heath Ledger is to the Joker.
It's not too early. I agree. I was just saying how nice it must be for such a talented actor to sidestep his looks and previous work by going so deep into this character physically. It really lets his talent take front and center.

Naming the kid Victor only makes me think of Victor Zsasz. It would be quite the turn if that’s who he eventually becomes. But hey in Gotham all it takes is one bad day

I like how the flood is still affecting Gotham primaevally in its lower levels; this implies that The Penguin series happens weeks after the events of The Batman film. Assuming that the flood waters will still be all over Gotham I can see how this'll set up The Batman 2. I saw a tweet that said that Matt Reaves wants The Batman 2 to take place during winter essentially revealing that Mister Freeze will be the main antagonist of the next film. With the majority of the city being filled with water, Mister Freeze will be in his element.

It has been confirmed that the show takes place one week after the events of The Batman and part II will take place one week after the penguin. And apparently we're going to get some hints of who will be the villain of that movie in the finale episode.
Hope the rumors are true, and Batman II will feature the Court of Owls

Great breakdown. Disappointed that you called out Clancy Brown for Krusty Krab and not the obvious Lex Luthor voice for the animated. He does so many comic book animated voices!
Or the Kurgan, or Sergeant Zim, or Yakone, etc...
His DC VO works is a very long list. I adored him in Carnivale.
The Kurgan did not survive countless battles over 3000 years to be known as Mr. Krabs or Lex Luthor.

Two other Easter eggs and points of notice. 1. Carmine Falcone has been recast to Mark Strong due to scheduling conflicts. And 2. The when in Rome song could be a reference to catwoman when in Rome another story set in the long Halloween universe.
Can you explain something to me? In The Batman, Carmine Falcone died by the Riddler’s Sniper Rifle. How is he in this show? He is played by a different actor but it’s the same character, how is he alive?
@@halopro85 asuming through flash backs as his hairs more lighter in some of the pictures of him, and just in general with the falcones being the villain of the show it’d be good to give more back story to flesh them out a bit.

Sophia Falcone stole that lunch scene. Oz came back for the final scene with her. But wow kudos to that actress.
Hopeful appearances:
I do hope we get Clayface being used as a spy and maybe their face being the only distorted part.
I'd be cool with victor fries being a russian chemist that creates drops or whatever drug and also hoses his victims in a meat locker.
Scarface would be such a good fit in the show as well.
Shocked by the writing and acting. I questioned whether Max could keep producing peak quality shows after the HBO merger, and this show puts those qualms at ease
This was a very strong start for this series. I hope it keeps up the pace and quality.

There was always a feeling of uneasy tension throughout the episode that kept me engaged the whole episode…well done

Great episode and off to a great start! Love Danny DeVito, but Burgess Meredith is the most iconic version of the penguin comic book or otherwise.
The more Batman is illusive from this series the better. That’s what makes this show fun, we see a side of Gotham we never really see and people forget it’s only Batman’s first few years so he is probably absolutely drained after dealing with the riddler.
Just saw episode 1. This show looks beautiful and has an amazing cast. Looking forward to the rest of the season.
Paul as Riddler. Colin as Penguin, Joaquin as Joker. Batman’s rouges gallery is gaining momentum 🥹. I’m looking forward to who they adapt next.

The first episode was amazing, and the rest of the season look great.
Surprised by how much I enjoyed the first episode. I wasn't expecting it to be BAD but didn't think it would really pull me in that well either. I'm already looking forward to the next episode 😆

The DCU I want to see the entire Bat Family straight from the rip (because I heard James Gunn wants the first DCU Batman to have Damian Wayne Robin)

I really wish they also had Black mask in this. Not only he would've perfectly fit within the aura of matt reeves's gritty Gotham & the crime-mafia pivoted story It could be a great opportunity to see his first live-action debute. Hopefully in future movies or spinoffs.
Black Mask is live action in Birds of Prey
Ewan McGregor played him a couple years ago.

But to be fair he was as much a black mask as was Jessie Isenberg a Lex Luther 😂 I mean he barely even wore his famous mask on which didn't even last for more than a few minutes. Let alone his weird characterization which had very little in common with his comic version where everyone would stand in awe of him. That's what I think at least.

Regardless, I wouldn't be surprised if Oz letting Victor know where his mom lives comes back to bite him.
Maybe that pushes him over the edge to becoming a full-fledged villain.
Also Zsasz in the comics and Victor in the show both lost their families
The place where they get the slush puppies at the end is Mighty Micks Gym from Rocky. Mickey was played by Burgess Meredith. The OG Penguin.
I'm not even a super hero fan. I find all of those Marvel movies just ridiculous. But I did like Joker & I'm very much looking forward to Joker 2. So DC does it much different than Marvel, apparently. I watched this episode and I'm hooked. This show was awesome. It's really just a crime drama, set in Gotham.
Kinda like how Andor is the best Star Wars tv show, yet it has very little to do with Star Wars. Just well written, shot, and acted.

Loved the first episode. It reminds me of the Gotham series on Fox a few years back. Grounded with no Batman. Colin Ferrell portrayal of the character is amazing.

The news footage at the beginning was the weakest, most standard and mundane part of the episode. In particular, the photo of Falcone that looks nothing like him, and then the weird uncanny valley shot of the mayor doing her speech. No idea why they chose to include those. The episode got a lot better from there. I hope the rest of the series is as good as this.

Almost unrecognizable?? Almost? He's entirely unrecognizable and he simply nails the role!
I didn't like the twilight kid as Batman. Personally, I thought Affleck was perfect. He is the first Batman in 30 years of movies to actually get a fight scene right (the warehouse in BvS is amazing even if the movie itself is a cluster)
But I loved the Riddler as the Zodiac Killer. Up until now I've always thought he was just second rate Joker wannabe. Their Penguin is perfection.
If we could have gotten an Affleck Batman movie with a better suit (the big sloppy bat logo on his chest is lame even if it is TDKR accurate) and Farrell as this version of the Penguin, I would have been in utter heaven.

Ok, so this story makes direct references to The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. My only issue thus far is that Sofia Gigante is literally a GIANT, with three claw scars on her face. I guess as Carmine didn’t have the claws on his from Cat Woman, she doesn’t have hers. But the casting of Cristin Milioti as Sofia seems wrong. I have nothing against her, but I think someone like Gwendoline Christie would have been better.
I guess don’t drag in The Long Halloween if you aren’t gonna be loyal.
I have enjoyed the show so far though.
