  • I decided to paint my chrome bumper white and decided to document it by doing a video. Things I used,
    -80 Grit Sandpaper
    -Rustoleum Self etching primer
    -Paint color match by Duplicolor
    -Spray Max 2K Clear Coat
    -Elbow Grease.

    Great video, I would like to go with a brushed metal look. would clear coat over the sanded chrome work. Hey where do you get Elbow Grease, Amazon? LOL Keep it up

      @icsivan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      larry jones I got the elbow grease when it was in sale, lol. In order for the clear coat to work, some adhesion promoter primer first, would definitely help a lot.

      @@icsivan Once you activate the clear coat you have to use it up, how long is it good for? I found some Adhesion promoter online, Advantage Refinish Products 3530, it got good reviews. thanks Ivan

    Chrome does not etch well. For primer on chrome, better to use Paint Bond, Paint Adhesive, etc. It's a bonding agent (adhesive, glue) that sticks to chrome and provides a superior paintable surface for paint to stick to. Rustoleum and Duplicolor each have a version. No doubt there are others.
    Chrome is one of the hardest metals. You did a good job sanding "teeth" into the chrome but when you hit it with etching primer, it will have a negative effect because chrome will hardly etch at all and the paint part of the etching primer will actually smooth out the teeth that you sanded into the chrome. Front bumpers are particularly bad because of all the bugs and road debris that gets thrown at them.
    Don't be insulted, I learned all this the hard way by doing exactly what you did and then had it flake of in small chunks every where a bug or rock would hit it.

      X-Man From what I researched , self etching primer grips to the sanded chrome very well and prepares you for regular primer, which I stupidly forgot to apply. I’m in no means a pro, ad wanted something to last while I save up to have the entire truck painted at a shop. So far it’s held up after 7 months. I appreciate the criticism though I enjoy learning.

      @@icsivan Glad to hear you had better results than I did. I was just trying to share what I learned the hard way. I'm not a Pro either.
      But the fact is, any acid strong enough to etch chrome would have to be neutralized before painting. Even Aircraft Paint Remover, that will burn your skin in seconds, will not etch chrome.
      I suspect you did a very good job sanding teeth into the chrome, I used 120 grit. BTW-the etching primer I have says you don't need another primer coat on top of it before top coating.
      Also, I did like the paper skirt you put around your pop-up canopy. Nice trick. I like to learn something new everyday also. Thanks.

      X-Man Thanks man. Well I’m helping my buddy do his chrome bumper next weekend and I will be applying your suggestions to it. We went out and got some duplicolor bonding primer. The paper helped so much against stuff getting in the paint.
