    Thank you Scott for clearly explaining and showing when Super Select masking works great and when it does not, showing how an alternative masking approach available in ON 1 may more effectively solve a masking challenge. That strikes me as an honest and open recognition of Super Select's capabilility and limitation. It is an exemplary review I find most useful and credible.

    Nice video Scott..
    I am very glad I switched to On1 Photo Raw in 2019. It keeps improving without major changes to the UI (user interface). The masking is great.
    _ It works wonders on my Raw and Jpeg digital camera images as well as my scanned film negative TIFFs.
    ...I started with Corel Paint Shop Pro in 2007.
    ...bought Lightroom ver 6.14 in 2018
    ....In 2019 switched from Lightroom ver 6.14...didnt want the subscription headache
    ....tried Luminar 3, but never bought follow on versions...they have changed the UI on each follow on product and never integrated a proper catalog-browse-keyword capability.

    I haven't read through all the comments yet, maybe you addressed this. For real estate photos, would SuperSelect AI work to select a window for doing a window pull by darkening the masked window? I have tried brushing in a darker image layer with Luminar 4, but its tedious and imprecise. If SuperSelect AI can get the same result as using darken mode in Photoshop (ala Rich Baum's method), then switching to ON1 is a no-brainer. Thanks for sharing your expertise with the community!

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure it'd get specific with a window ... though the Line Mask is a very good fit for masking straight-edged shapes.

  • @sarahparker1188
    @sarahparker1188 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mr. Davenport... according to a comment raised (and responded to) in ON1's video of the enhancements to select AI, one is able to create a luminosity mask, then use super select AI to narrow (paint in or out the rest of the mask quickly). I'd love to see a demonstration of this, as well as color range masks coupled with super select AI. I think a one-two punch between luminosity or color range PLUS AI Select is super powerful, if ON!'s response to that comment is true! Thank you for your insight into these products!

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sarah ... I have not seen this capability in the pre-release software. When I get the next update, I'll check again. What I see is using Super Select AI will replace any pre-existing mask, including a luminosity mask (same behavior as Quick Mask AI today).

  • @fredhaider7580

    Kudos Scott. You can rename this masking in on1 an anthology. If you are up to a challenge I have two images. One of a person in a wheelchair and fabrics in the wind. I also have a second image which is a shot of the sky framed in the window of a plane. I wanted to mask everything but the women, the wheelchair, and the fabric out and replace the background with the sky and window frame. Spent several hours trying this but could not mask out the background outside the spokes of the wheelchair. Contact me if you want the two images. This would be an awesome tutorial in masking for composites with On1.

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Fred. What you describe is possible, and involves many of the masking tools. Detailed masking like you describe can be painstaking and take time, yet doable. Around straight edges like spokes, the line mask can help.

    • @fredhaider7580
      @fredhaider7580 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScottDavenport I will try that. I know that ai keywording includes spokes so I hoped there would be a way to select spokes inverse and paint out. I am still learning more about On1 edit possibilities.

    Good to see the early view I now have Raw 2023 but when I use super select on one test picture a flower it selects background and I can't see how to deselect without erasing using the other mask tools . The background is not even the same colour?, Not as impressed as I thought I would be with simple contrast photos it works fine with busy photos not so good.

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recall highlighting that in the video, too. For busier scenes, other masking tools may be a better choice (a color range in your example may be better). Also, to deselect a region, click on the blue highlighted area. HTH

    I am impressed with the overall package. I have the first release version and would say the Super Select was not improved much. I suspect this will take quite some time until its ready for prime time. It still is a good product without that.

    Great video, Hey is there an adjustment for the power of super select ai. Meaning can the strength of the mask be adjusted stronger or weaker, to help either make the mask more precise with less going in after and cleaning it up, or if the ai mask is not getting enough of the area the mask is needed, cranking up the adjustment and getting more masked area? Hope this makes sense.

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every effects filter has an Opacity slider that can be lowered to reduce its overall impact. Check out scottdavenportphoto.com/on1-effects for more. You can also adjust the mask in the masking options area after using SuperSelect.

    • @smiller787
      @smiller787 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Scott, Doesn’t sound like there is such an adjustment, that I’m asking. The Opacity slider I do understand and that’s not what I’m asking. I do remember a slider in either On1 or more likely another program I’ve used in the past that you could either crank up the sensitivity of the mask if it missed creating clean edges between areas, or reduced if too much of your details that you wanted to be saved got selected into the mask area….usually between areas of similar colors and such. Figured I would ask…..I know I’m getting greedy, as these new selective ai programs are incredible, and I don’t think we’re done seeing more and more incredible things in the post processing world. So, Again Thanks. Sean

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotcha. Right… there isn’t a shrink/grow/auto-refine option for the selection. For range masks (color, luminosity) you have those types of options. Have fun!

  • @hepgeoff
    @hepgeoff 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this. If you use SuperSelect AI to mask a specific area, how do you add to the mask where SuperSelect missed?

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use other masking tools after Super Select is finished. Most commonly, the Masking Brush is what I reach for to tidy things up.

  • @hamltnblue
    @hamltnblue 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice. One thing that might help with this feature is to combine auto select with key words. If for say you entered waterfall or running water, it would know the type of scene and isolate the milky white tones.

    Thanks for the video! Do you know if you'll be able to intersect masks like in Lightroom?

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Todd ... you can use the different masking tools together to get more intricate masks. It's not like intersections in LR, though. I posted a different video about how the ON1 masking tools work together (th-cam.com/video/Bwyj1UaJSJ4/w-d-xo.html). Based on my exploration so far, Super Select AI is like Quick Mask AI or Luminosity Masks ... it *replaces* any pre-existing mask.

    How do you clean up a mask that was created with the super select tool? For example if the selection bleeds into an area that you don't want to change. Can you erase a small part of the mask?

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes. After applying a filter/adjustment, reach for any other masking tool to refine it. The brush is a good starting point.

      My experience this far is the same as 2022. I’m on a 3-ish year old iMac, good (but not top line) processor, strong Graphics card, 64GB of RAM.

  • @shlomoeshet8525
    @shlomoeshet8525 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking promising. It seems that this new ON1's feature becomes a serious competitor to LR's masking capabilities. I wonder if "Select AI" can also combine several masks together (add, subtract and intersect) like LR does? Thanks Scott.

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shlomo ... this is still pre-release software, so subject to change. What I've seen thus far is Super Select AI is akin to Quick Mask AI or Luminosity Masks in the overall masking tool "hierarchy" of ON1. (See th-cam.com/video/Bwyj1UaJSJ4/w-d-xo.html for details). Super Select AI will replace any pre-existing mask. After creating an initial mask with Super Select AI, you can use other tools like the Masking Bug or Masking Brush to add or remove. I have not found a way where you could, for example, combine a Super Select AI mask with a color range or luminosity mask.

    Aloha Scott. Thanks for this early look at one of the added features of Photo RAW 2023. How are the computational demands of the new software? Do you notice it bogging down your computer any more than the current Photo RAW?

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi William ... the specs and requirements from ON1 haven't changed. As with all software companies, I would not use the minimum required specs ... go at least with the recommended. As for 2023 compared to 2022, I haven't noticed any specific "oooh that's slower" moments so far. Feels about the same.

  • @Mimiclobster
    @Mimiclobster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will be upgrading but I'm appalled that ON1 will charge another $80 US for the plugins to allow you to lunch from within Photoshop and Lightroom. All my other plugins launch from with my Adobe apps out of the box.

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Michel ... yeah... that split happened with Photo RAW 2022. If you're an Adobe user, you may want to consider only the plug-ins and not Photo RAW as a whole. I haven't seen or worked with the 2023 plug-ins yet, so I don't know if the new selection tools will be in (for example) the ON1 Effects plug-in. I would *hope* so ... just can't authoritatively state that.

    • @Mimiclobster
      @Mimiclobster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScottDavenport thank you Scott for pointing that subtlety out. In discussion with ON1 support now as I already pulled the trigger on the standalone version. Hopefully the plugins versions are full featured and will simply swap one for the other.

    What I learned during the years with computers is that you should never excuse the behaviour of pre-release software. Four months later, Super Select AI is still hot garbage with busier pictures. This is a scam. They should provide pen tool for refining details, because it's just not working properly.
