  • The colors are opaque, vibrant, they have a smooth lay down, layering ability is there, they have a slim lightweight barrel made of a pine wood.
Keep that in mind when you’re sharpening and using these pencils, the type of wood that the barrel is made of is more fragile than other types of wood that are used in the manufacturing of colored pencils.
The first thing I noticed it smelled like trees, the pine scent, me being from the Pacific Northwest. I caught that right away. Which is absolutely lovely to me.
After carefully looking at each pencil, sharpening them and testing each one out, I’ve come to the conclusion whether it shall be admitted or not that it looks like #Derwent may have thrown down the competitive gauntlet to #NewellCorporation against the #Prismacolorpremiere line.
Although, it has been initially stated, the reason that the chromaflow line was created was to fill in that gap in the market or I should say in the European market where the Prismacolor premieres weren’t so readily available or the prices were a little steeper than it was for the US to get their hands on, we were a wee spoiled having such a great product😎
It seems the tables have turned, it is now the US that is having issues getting their hands on a product when it comes to the chromaflow line of the Derwent pencils.
Mainly, 100 count and 150 count sets.
If you are in the US, you are going to pay a premium price to get your hands on them.
I know people are gonna start arguing and that’s OK🤣
So, in my set I had a few pencils that are rubbish the core just fell right out of them🤦‍♀️
I experienced this with 72 count & 100 count sets and know several others had the same experience.
They put out 150 count set, they did not make those 50 new pencils available as open stock or in a complimentary set sold by themselves.
So they’ve left consumers who have already purchased the 100 count scratching their heads!
There is positives and negatives in every set of colored pencils.
I’m a fan of Derwent products and love the chromaflow line.
The colors are smooth, vibrant very opaque, the layering ability is there & they have a light fast rating. I love Derwents products.
They have a fabulous line of artist supplies, you would be a fool not to use them
My opinion is just an opinion and that’s all it is.

I'm really torn about buying the 150 set or not 😪 for me here in Portugal I can buy from Amzn Spain or the UK, the price dropped yesterday to 155 and 145 euros respectively (the UK adds up to about 8 euros for shipping).
Here I can't buy them open stock so easily so I would have to import them from the UK - and after they leave the European community it can be costly to buy outside Amzn.
The keynote for me to even consider buying them is because Prismacolor cost a fortune to me (around 250 euros), and they are the supposed answer from Derwent, but (and a big one for that matter) Colorfully Optimistic did a review on them talking about laydown and said they are not a good competitor against Prismas - she is a die-hard fan of Prismas too.
What do you think about comparable colors? Are there important ones missing in Derwent if you compare them to Prismas' selection?
I'm not very keen on spending more on Chromaflows than I spent on my Polys 2 months ago 🙄

As of recent news cult pens and Derwent UK offer just the new pencils , so you can buy them from them without having to buy the entire set. Amazon UK has the full 150 set as well. Not sure what that converts to for you. But I know it’s expensive.

Now to answer your question directly of chromaflow bs PRISMA I’ve been using Prisma for close to 40 years and I am a diehard Prisma supporter and fan in comparison to Prismas I have Derwents chromaflow a 3.5 of 5 Prisma a 5 of 5. So no there are not like the ultra soft Prismas 😎 That is my opinion, but there really is nothing else on the market like Prismacolor premiers. Especially when it comes to how creamy smooth they are and how easily you can move the color around on the paper. You can’t do that with the chroma flow. I hope I answered your question. I try to be very unbiased in my opinion, but I’m also very honest. And although these are a great addition to the colored pencil world, these are a far cry from a Prismacolor .😉😉😉

@pnwcolorist1 That was an excellent answer 👏 Thank you so much! Knowing there is no other brand like Prisma, in your opinion is there another brand/set that you've used that scores higher than Chromaflow did?
It can be on the feel of the pencil or more so on the color palette itself, which for me is a super important comparison.
