- It is time for my 2024 pencil tour! See what I have, how I arrange them, how I store my color charts and where I get them from. Everything I recommend! I now feel like I am officially out of the game of buying pencils (barring open stock when I run out of a color). Also pick up some coloring tips as we go.
LIGHTFAST UPDATE: I wanted to fact check myself on any lightfast claims and where possible I have updated lightfast info below. I still can't find official lightfast ratings for prismas.

Hi, Derwent chromaflow 150 colors set, just announced, I start to save for the set (not full price release)
Just got mine, the missing colors were what I needed to use those pencils more
I hope that prismacolor never eliminates their metallic gold and silver (their bronze is a regular color, not a metallic) or neon pencils because I love using them! The prismacolor gold is, I think, the most realistic gold out there. The neons are wonderful for injecting light into a drawing, note: a good example is that lion drawing on one of the pencil kits for a very fancy example. In my everyday journal I use neon pencils to draw a sun if it is sunny that day and enjoy the color pencil practice of drawing spheres with the prismacolor neons. I have found that after watching/listening to utube videos on color penciling for almost 14 years, we have a tendency to think if we don't use it then maybe others don't either. I know there are others who say get rid of the neons and metallics, but I try and put it out there that some of us love and use them on a regular basis. I agree with prismacolor going downhill when the company changed hands back in around 2012, I believe. It really is a shame cause prismacolors before all the utube coloring hoopla began, were the creme de la creme of the art world in America. There weren't many options, certiainly not hundreds of sets of cheaper pencil sets available today back then. It seems the core of prismacolors are still pretty much the same, but the wood they use is just awful! It has been common practice for some time now that when any kind of company changes hands, they are most likely to make some undesirable changes in order to save $$ usually. It's like they have to "learn their lesson"--if they ever choose to--that they should not try to make those changes because they will alienate their original customers.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I think one of the reasons a lot of people are angry with me for this video is because they are massive fans of the gold standard that this brand *used* to be and based on how their older stock pencils are. But there are so many more choices now. Coloring can be an expensive hobby, I think we all want the same thing: pencils that have better quality control, or a price that reflects their new standard. Happy coloring! 😁
I like the idea of the storybook coloring pages. Didn't realize that ship was the same that landed on the other pag. I will have to consider that in future colors for that book and others.
Please bring on the coloring books. This video was so enjoyable and informative! Love all your insights on the pencils, and seeing everyone’s pencil, pen, and book collections. Thank you for sharing!
Very interesting and detailed video
Love watching it
A great video for beginners. I would like to see the coloring books. I do hope in the future, you'll be able to do more videos. Thank you❤
Thank you! Will do! It's the next video on my list and will guarantee to motivate me into getting back into coloring 😀
Yes, Pllease compare Derwent with any or all pencils--your choice. Thanks.
I’d love to see your coloring books and even your whole studio area if you felt comfortable. I enjoy your channel!
Awesome! Thank you! Coloring Book video coming very soon 😊
I would love to see your coloring book collection and recommendations 😊 Thank you for sharing your pencils
I absolutely want to see your coloring book collection! and ty for the tip about the tricolor pen. I always thought it was more targeted towards sketchbook work, but now you convinced me to get them for actual coloring work. Ty have nice day!
You are so welcome! Coloring book video coming soon 😊
Each to their own. But you don't need to be heavy handed with prismacolor. Love them as I can get a painterly effect with them. They are waxy and smooshy and I love the wat they wax bloom when I layer them up particularly for skin tones. So keep that in mind if you have not tried prismacolor. Build quality is not the best but they are ultra cheap where I live and it's the pigment which is the thing and they work well just don't drop them or they will shatter all along the barrel.
I'm going to try again with them this year (mostly as a companion to the Derwent chromaflows). There's not much I can do for my hand control but at least I know if I'm not in the mood for taking my time I can lay down a page fast 😅
I would consider polychromos pencils as a hard pencil along with your metalics in reality for large art pieces you do need a mix of hard and soft. I would recommend a twelve set of polychromos and a selection of your favourite soft pencils perhaps a 36 set of colorsoft if your on a budget. If not caren dache or derwent lightfast.. I. Personally love the cheapy prismacolor open stock. Select your pencils carefully check they are centered have no dints and check the lead is not broken and for prismacolor in particular check there is no splitting along the barrel. Your pallet will be more curated to your stlye. No need to buy every pencil on the planet. Holbien can be hard touse on cheaper papers. Go to an art shop and try out the pencils and get the ones that you like the feel of. Be respectful and don't throw or damage art materials yes I have seen people do that while I've been shopping. Hope this is helpful.
Great advice thank you 😊
I wish you would do a 260 brutfuners review
Thank you, I have their pastels set and I did use them a bit as light tints. They do run down very fast because of how soft they are (super creamy). I don't think I will get the full set and will probably dispose of these. I'm more mindful of toxins these days and these have strong odor and being a budget import it's not clear what ingredients these contain and if they are safe for long term exposure. I know that Holbeins (the premium ones they are copying) could not be sold in the US for a while due to toxins, so I can only imagine about these. Hopefully they are fine but I'm going to avoid for now. From what I've seen from other artists though it that they are possibly the best Holbein dupe.
And please dig into chromaflow
As Derwent announced 150 set .
We will love to see the comparison with both prisma and coloursoft
I have so many on my to buy list its a shame. TFS!
Hardness wise prismacolor is very similar to holbein pencils so you may not like. Holbein if you hate using prismacolor
Great to know, I've also stayed away from holbein as they may be more toxic than my other brands and I haven't found the full details on that to make an informed decision
