- The colors are opaque, vibrant, they have a smooth lay down, layering ability is there, they have a slim lightweight barrel made of a pine wood.
Keep that in mind when you’re sharpening and using these pencils, the type of wood that the barrel is made of is more fragile than other types of wood that are used in the manufacturing of colored pencils.
The first thing I noticed it smelled like trees, the pine scent, me being from the Pacific Northwest. I caught that right away. Which is absolutely lovely to me.
After carefully looking at each pencil, sharpening them and testing each one out, I’ve come to the conclusion whether it shall be admitted or not that it looks like #Derwent may have thrown down the competitive gauntlet to #NewellCorporation against the #Prismacolorpremiere line.
Although, it has been initially stated, the reason that the chromaflow line was created was to fill in that gap in the market or I should say in the European market where the Prismacolor premieres weren’t so readily available or the prices were a little steeper than it was for the US to get their hands on, we were a wee spoiled having such a great product😎
It seems the tables have turned, it is now the US that is having issues getting their hands on a product when it comes to the chromaflow line of the Derwent pencils.
Mainly, 100 count and 150 count sets.
If you are in the US, you are going to pay a premium price to get your hands on them.
I know people are gonna start arguing and that’s OK🤣
So, in my set I had a few pencils that are rubbish the core just fell right out of them🤦♀️
I experienced this with 72 count & 100 count sets and know several others had the same experience.
They put out 150 count set, they did not make those 50 new pencils available as open stock or in a complimentary set sold by themselves.
So they’ve left consumers who have already purchased the 100 count scratching their heads!
There is positives and negatives in every set of colored pencils.
I’m a fan of Derwent products and love the chromaflow line.
The colors are smooth, vibrant very opaque, the layering ability is there & they have a light fast rating. I love Derwents products.
They have a fabulous line of artist supplies, you would be a fool not to use them
My opinion is just an opinion and that’s all it is.

I really like my set. Enjoyable to use. I wanted a Derwent set and couldn't afford the lightfast.
I agree that they missed the mark on several things, but for us in Europe Prismacolor (and in general anything coming from overseas) is insanely expensive. Prismacolors are 240€ on Amazon france (260 $), while the chromaflow are 200, and probably a bit less once the 150 arrives in store. We can have the derwent in physical stores (so easy to get open stock) while no prismacolors (I don't know if it's a tax/import problem or it would just be too expensive to be profitable. Most US companies and consumers are not very sensitive to the VAT/shipping/tax problem of EU customers, we mostly get snarky remarks of the sort "well, you don't expect us in America to subsidise your VAT, RIGHT?". Another one of my hobbies is boardgames, and it's ridiculous how certain US companies are unable to organise shipping and import to EU. Taxes and shipping costs as much as the game, while for the USA is a small fraction of it (we are talking like 10$ vs 50+$ for shipping only. VAT is then calculated separately and with shipping included, so the taxes explode....).
So, as for Prismacolors, for many other hobbies too we are left with the choice of paying an insane amount of shipping + VAT or give up on the product :(
So I can understand your problem, since I have it on a regular basis, but I think it's mostly due to the current economic policy of USA vs EU than anything malicious from Derwent (just talking about availability and price in the USA here, I totally agree that they did dirty on the whole 150 vs 100 vs 72 and the open stock issue)
I’m really sorry I don’t have any control over import, export taxes, and prices
I live in Germany, and checked today. I wanted to order some, to try out. In all the shops I know, I can only get the colors from the 100 set. (Until recently, it was only the 72 colors). Many people have bought the 150 set, and can't buy some of them individually now.
Annoying, if you have used them a lot, and now have to wait.
I'm still curious to see what they're like. I just want a second set of pencils, which I can buy open stock. (I have Polys, and wanted the 2. set to be different.I know, Chromaflow are not like Prismas, but still different then the Polys I think) 😄 For Prismas I would have to sell my husband, cats and a kidney.😂 Far too expensive for 260-300€. (Chromaflow 160€, for the 150 set).
Did you try Blick online?
@@pnwcolorist1 I have, now 😄 Thank you! I had no clue, that they ship internationally.
Got the 150 prismacolor, and the 72 set of cromaflow both are great to use.
Awesome congratulations!!!!
Hi great video I’m a prisma girl it was my first artist grade pencil.. growing up I used Derwent student grade pencil at school and when I first used them colouring in they were hurting my hands so i googled soft artist grade pencils to buy so Prismacolor came up so i decided to try them omg they were the best but so expensive to buy hear in Australia 🇦🇺 but I buy them at Officeworks we’re I live they were $2.40 per pencil but so worth it.. I can buy the derwent chromaflow in Australia but it comes from the Uk I brought the 28 set from cult pens I’m now waiting on the rest on the open stock for sale hear in Australia l.. I always wait until the prices come down.. thanks for a great video.. ❤❤
Yeah they are spendy for the good ones. 🥰 I’m partial to my Prismas as well. ( self admittedly 😂)
I do like certain other lines. I have arthritis so I know hand fatigue can play up when using pencils. I try to encourage people to learn light touch layering it really helps with that hand fatigue and painful arthritis etc… but every artist has a style 😍 that’s what makes it so much fun..
I wish I could send all of Aussie Prismas at a better price the chromaflow are def not Prismas but they are a nice creamy set. Prismas are uniquely ultra soft and there’s really nothing on the market that’s comparable, unless you’re lucky enough to get hands on a few vintage/antique sets.
Hi pnw colorist I’m in the uk I have just learnt that there will be 150 open stock for the chromaflowes Derwent have confirmed this I hope this helps I shall be buying myself now lol. Denise
I learned on the Color With Claire channel that they are coming out with open stock. In the meantime, there is a UK company called Colt Pens. They are putting together individual pencils, as well as a set of 50. This company has a history of doing this kind of thing. I ununderstand that shipping costs to the US are within some level of reason. Apparently, since the coloring craze started, all of us have been making quite a dent in the supply of certain pigments to make our beautiful colors. A number of art supply manufacturers are scrambling to come up with some new pigments and similar colors. Derwent recently has downsized their artist set of 120 colors to a set of 72. I suspect these changes are due to the pigments problem. I don't know of course. But I do know that everything will work out.
Correct , cult pens currently has a supplemental set I believe 😎
Yes , thank you. Eventually they said they will have them available in the UK. Stock in US art stores is still limited however. And as of the posting of my video the open stock was not available. They haven’t released them yet & no date has been provided as to when . Derwent stated that some are available via the UK store as open stock my last check there was 90 of the 150 colors available in the chromaflow line as open stock. Although approximately 24 of the colors not available as open stock yet are available in some of the other lines by Derwent. Blick currently sells the metallics as open stock that are in the 150 set as well. 😎
@@pnwcolorist1 unfortunately cult pens tend to be pretty costly(unless there is a sale, and then they have some good deals ). I found, that to make up the newer colours, it would cost me the same as it would for a complete set of 150 on Amazon uk. I'm in British Columbia Canada
I live in England 🏴 and I am not happy with Derwent I am not going to buy pencils if I can not replace them
I know, as of the recent news that was put out. They are going to make them all open stock from my understanding.
That was a really bad start to the kick off of this set. I agree with you.
I do know the last time I checked, which was a few days ago. There was 90 available as open stock on their website, and then the metallic colors are already sold open stock. I found all of them at Blick online. Even the new colors that are in that 150 set I think when I worked it out there was about 24 colors that are available in the chroma flow set of 150 that are available in the other lines. They definitely shot themselves in the foot there.
You can replace them,i have just bought the 150 set and they are gorgeous colours.
I agree in all points with your opinion. Thank you for this Video . 🫶🏻
