The way Veo is just completely enamoured by “the little carrots” and the way everyone’s face lights up at being asked to bring back treasure for them is the most gosh darn adorable thing ever!! 😭💕
LOL "He's named after a REAL planet!" (Nice one Jill!) OMG these guys know how to fire off the one liners. Loved the Jupiter Jones NPC! Great job Monty in using the Player Characters backstories to add so much realism to the world. I really FEEL like the PCs are from this area.
So I’m just watching this ep next to my sleeping cat and when Veo is attacked in the bar scene and makes the cat screeching noises my cat wakes up instantly and starts making low hissing growls at the TV. Classic. Keep up the good work.
I feel she is doing a great job roleplaying the difference between class and character. The way she plays Veo makes it easy to see why she would choose gloom stalker.
I am completely obsessed with this. The game and the role playing is brilliantly entertaining. All four of these people are insanely good and probably show better acting/improv then most actors lmao. So glad I have so many of these binge watch
I've just started bingeing the series - does she also have the Nekomimi type that adjusts the ear position avvording to the mental state of the wearer?
FYI I'm watching this campaign more regularly than I'm watching Critical Role now! Keep it up, I love what you all are doing. This campaign is also much more accessible and understandable to someone new to D&D, and I've been recommending players new to D&D that I'm about to start DM'ing for soon (I've been doing it since AD&D days) to watch Dungeons of Drakkenheim to get an idea of what to expect. With that said, I want to suggest again -- making a "debrief" episode that's like a commentary you find on DVD's where you guys discuss the mechanics used in the episode to teach in a way that viewers can watch in practical use, and maybe reasoning behind making certain choices to demonstrate why a player would do one thing or another as either a better tactical choice or a better RP choice. That would really add a lot to using this campaign as a teaching tool. Much love and aloha from Hawaii!
It's really nice that I can watch this with my kids. Also the story formation, and character development is so much better. To be fair Matt is a awesome voice actor and a smooth story teller. My problem is when they level up, they wake and hey look I'm now a arcane trickster and can cast 5 spells. I didn't know I wanted to be a magic user yesterday. The way Monty weaves the story around the characters and their choices is beyond fantastic. The PCs do a super job developing their characters in a realistic way, and role play together like companions in some of our favorite books. In that regard it wouldn't take much polishing to transcribe this into a book.
I also strongly prefer this to Critical Role. I couldn't get through half an episode of Critical Role. I think I like the worldbuilding here better. Monty Martin isn't the voice actor that Matthew Mercer, that isn't what interests me about D&D.
I really like Monty made the potions just give a set amount of healing, and I like he set that at the max a potion can give. Making some healing accessible is a must with no healer in the party. Even though you're right Veo could have taken a healing spell, I was thinking that same thing.
@@hyserbomb Yeah I see no problems with that, because why would any 10 oz. potion give a random amount of healing? Things tend to be more consistent in reality! 😄
I’m really enjoying the series guys, great work 😀I don’t think anyone has mentioned it yet - I noticed you’ve updated the Drakkenheim map with road names and more concise notes, much easier to follow now 👍
@Selwyn Clyde Alojipan Emberwood Village and the Eckerman Mill are both several miles away from the city core, so they don’t quite fit on the map. Monty hasn’t finished the regional map yet :)
New viewer here! Great campaign. Great pacing from the DM. There’s actually a lot of behind the scenes tricks Martin is doing there to keep the pacing top notch. It’s only really noticeable to players or DMs who have played in other campaigns, and there is a true eloquence to how Martin is managing the battles and adjudication for entertainment purposes. Well done sir.
I know I'm way late to these videos but I found your videos only a month or so ago. This campaign is awesome. I enjoy the interaction between everyone and the way the story is unfolding. Great stuff everyone!
Veo pointed out that only Jupiter is a planet... But what she didn't notice is that Pluto is only a planetoid because its not the only thing on its orbit. Yes. Jupiter is a loner with no friends when Pluto's the popular one.
Or if you look to the origin of those names, Jupiter is the king of the gods and lord of the sky while Pluto is the eldest of the gods and Lord of the Underworld, riches, the dead, and everything else under the earth
Agreed a video on lighting would be nice as I dont think I have ever seen one! Also the way the party interacts with each other is awesome. Reminds me alot of playing with my family and the truly accidental "I didnt think this would turn bad..." accidents. Keep up the good work and happy adventuring!!
I mean, it /is/ *magical* darkness. It makes sense to me to block out all light. But I can understand why one would like it this way. Much more advantageous for a non-sorcerer (since before, only they could see through it)

Not only are you all good looking, smart, nerdy and funny, but you also actually know how to play the game! It is a delight to see combat how it’s supposed to be. I love the fact that you always throw at them the worst odds and they are always out numbered. But still finds a way to kick ass! You all know how to use spells and buffs in a very entertaining and creative way. It is so simple and clean, but at the same time so well thought out. I can tell you are really prepared but also leave room for the players to make choices. The sandbox illusion is perfect! You are also very good at improvising. Love this! The roleplay of the tabaxi's fish addiction was hilarious. They never actually said she was addicted, but her desperation to get the candied salmon was palpable.
I'd love to do this video. Warning: a mini-rant from Monty follows: The rules for darkness are *nonsensical* in 5e. According to the PHB, areas of darkness -- magical or not -- are called "totally obscured areas" which "block vision entirely". A later errata added a line that you are effectively "blinded when trying to see something in these areas" but it doesn't address the fundamental issue that grouping darkness in the same category as *fog* is a massive rules oversight. The result is that Darkness (both the phenomena and the spell) are effectively "ink blots" which blind creatures within them entirely, rather real-work darkness, which is permeable. Note that the only trait of the magical darkness (like that created by the Darkness spell) is that creatures with Darkvision can't see through it. It otherwise works exactly like "natural" darkness. The fundamental result is that by the game rules, if creature "A" stands in a pool of light, and creature "B" stands in an area of total darkness, by the rules as presented, neither would be able to see each other. In real life, this would not be the case: "A" would not be able to see "B", but "B" would be able to see "A". Now, "B" might not be able to see their immediate surroundings very well, but is perfectly capable of seeing anything in the illuminated area: just like being in a cinema or theatre, where you can see the actors/movie by can't read the face of your watch. Now for the real mess: if a third creature, "C", was also standing on the edge of the darkness, "B" would be able to see "C"'s silhouette, but "A" might not be able to see "C" at all. A creature in an area of darkness, but who is standing in front of a light source (even if the light source isn't directed at them) can still be visible to creatures facing the illuminated source. Again, this is all how light works in the real world, not in the game rules. If we followed the "real world" interpretation, the Darkness spell would have some very strange effects in a brightly lit area. In this case, creatures in the area of Darkness would appear as silhouettes to everyone around them (a very mind-bending mental image, actually) Instead, effectively using the Darkness spell would require positioning such that it either snuffed out all light sources in the area, or overlapped against a wall/ already-existing area of darkness which would prevent the "silhouette" effect from occurring. Whew. That was a long rant. Thanks for indulging me!
@@DungeonDudes You described pretty well in detail how I treat natural darkness in my campaigns and adventures. With the Darkness spell though, I think of it that it absorbs all light in the area, even light passing through it, so that silhouettes don't appear. holy shit the updated map is so helpful. I was always trying to align what was being said to the map, and generally I'm good with maps but was having trouble, and now things make sense! thank you for the taking the time for that!
This was an absolute gem of an episode. Hanging on every word of the prodigal son returned story, wholesome family reunions and the adventurers finally bonding together as a unit, followed up by hilarious Pluto plotlines (sending JJ towards the Crater was classic. And the Not-even-a-planet line had me rolling😂). This episode had it all and it didnt rely on combat to make it interesting. Well done!
After bingeing your guys' informative D&D content while researching as a new player, I decided to give your Drakkenheim campaign a go and WOW I'm so glad I did! Amazing roleplay, DMing and interaction between the characters; it's exactly how I hope my future campaigns feel. I'm definitely going to be inhaling all 50-something episodes ASAP. I'm 3 years late but thank you guys so much for sharing this with us! 💞💞💞
This is the only D&D stream I manage to follow. The players interactions are fun and the flow is great. It reminds me how we used to play Shadowrun many years ago. I am actually excited to listen to the next campaigns.
Hey!!! Just started this series and man have I been loving it! I’m a big fan of D&D podcasts and have listened to many, but I don’t think I’ve ever been so invested in one this quickly!!!! Your interactions are so natural and I think this is the most similar to my actual dnd campaigns!!! I really like the concept of picking your routes for travel in this kind of way, it’s really interesting to listen to!!! And the factions are so cool, I’m really interesting in seeing more of them (especially the Hooded Lanterns and the Paladin order that I can’t remember the name of)
I bought this Kickstarter and finally getting to run the campaign. Not only do you have a great series going on here, but the product quality of the Kickstarter is superb. I feel I got great value for you Dungeons of Drakkenheim campaign. The quality is superior to anything I have received for DnD 5E. Thank you for all your hard work and great entertainment as well.
This is done much better than critical roll and nothing against the people o or there but in my opinion small groups of 3 or 4 players runs so much better than larger groups.
Just started playing my second DnD campaign (first one was a dud, and lasted 4 sessions), and I been obsessing over this channel. The Content, The Entertainment, and The Wholesomes are top tier. May the binge-listening continue!
I'm way late to this party, but I've just begun watching this series (after binging like 85% of your other videos...) and I must admit this is the most inspiring and enjoyable shopping I have ever witnessed, I'm going to use Aldor's technique of tempting and teasing his customers with what they want in an RP sense to get more money out of them.
Coming in Way after it first came out but I really enjoy Veo's obsession with fish! I remember a video where our dungeon dudes talk about things you're character will pursue that the DM can use as hooks to move the story, Veo's pursuit of salmon is great for that!
I liked the explanation of the darkness spell. That does make sense. That spell should be advantageous to its caster and not just inhibit everyone. So that explanation tracks. Good job.
See this is why I always have prestigitation. Clean clothes, tasty moldy bread, and the best magic tricks ever. Like changing colors making mask dancing lights, dancing spectral doll. Etc
Followed DD for a year plus now. Only just getting into the play now. I wish I started earlier. It was the collab you did with D4 and Treant that got me over. But the play has locked me in . Awesome ROLE PLAY along with some halarious roll play.
I just started watching these. Much more entertaining than football ( even championship games). Sebastian: "I was really hoping not to set this place on fire, again." It the "again" that makes the scene.
Tennessee Bear depends on the halfling. It only takes the feat mobile to give them a 35 movement. That also grants ability to dash through difficult terrain with no movement cost, and you can make a melee attack then run away in one turn without provoking an opportunity attack.
Just getting into this series and I love it. I’m a refugee from *that* DM’s community and couldn’t find a new game that I liked. This is a different style, format and size to what I’m used to but I just love it. The characters are so funny and mesh with the setting so effortlessly, I’m really looking forward to whatever happens next.
Yeah, especially with that comment he dropped an episode or two ago about sending someone to Hell on accident. Makes a precedent for him causing accidental planar travel (I'm assuming the meteor was something summoned from another plane)
In a recent video he said this character was based on the 10th Doctor and DC's Constantine. Constantine commonly had fire in his younger years leading to the death of his family. I wonder if Sebastian accidently started a fire or otherwise accidently killed his mother.

just started my rewatch of both seasons within the last couple of days, this really is the best show I have ever watched
This is the only D&D stream I manage to follow. The players interactions are fun and the flow is great. It reminds me how we used to play Shadowrun many years ago. I am actually excited to listen to the next campaigns.
Another great episode, I can't wait till next week.
And the factions are so cool, I’m really interesting in seeing more of them (especially the Hooded Lanterns and the Paladin order that I can’t remember the name of)
I think the 3 Crows/Jackson 3/Veo and the pussycats need a half orc barbarian to join them to show up those Caspians.
Anyone else smile at Jupiter Jones' name? The Three Investigators series of books.
That's where I went with it!
I love those twisting dagger thrusts, I can just feel the pain LOLOLOLOLOL from the mage.
Loving this campaign! I look forward to this more than Critical role.
Blasphemy, no yeah this is pretty good
This is done much better than critical roll and nothing against the people o or there but in my opinion small groups of 3 or 4 players runs so much better than larger groups.
Just started playing my second DnD campaign (first one was a dud, and lasted 4 sessions), and I been obsessing over this channel. The Content, The Entertainment, and The Wholesomes are top tier. May the binge-listening continue!
And with this episode Pluto won my heart. I'm rooting for the guy !!! Mighty Pluto Jackson
Having grown up in Germany due to my fathers career, I'm loving all the german references and words thrown in there.
Loving the show. Thanks to all of y’all.
On my second watch through of this campaign 🖤 such a good story and great characters
Coming in Way after it first came out but I really enjoy Veo's obsession with fish! I remember a video where our dungeon dudes talk about things you're character will pursue that the DM can use as hooks to move the story, Veo's pursuit of salmon is great for that!
I honestly haven't heard any issues, these have been really fun to listen to -
I liked the explanation of the darkness spell.
Etc
I wish any areas I live(d) in had such RP groups :s pleasure to watch you :)
The subliminal reference to humanoid turtles that might possibly named after great artists and thinkers, is sublime.
If only I didn't need sleep. Then I could watch so many more of these
Loved the father reconection bit. Hit me in the feels.
Followed DD for a year plus now. Only just getting into the play now. I wish I started earlier. It was the collab you did with D4 and Treant that got me over. But the play has locked me in . Awesome ROLE PLAY along with some halarious roll play.
Awww this episode made me cry.
Sebastian Crowe is such a sweetheart. Proper Kelly character.
I just started watching these. Much more entertaining than football ( even championship games). Sebastian: "I was really hoping not to set this place on fire, again." It the "again" that makes the scene.
1:29:50 Sebastian: I use Minor Illusion to make it sound like Jupiter Jones experiences a loud fart that last one full minute.
Not that it matters but the halflings would have only made it 50 feet on a dash
Tennessee Bear depends on the halfling. It only takes the feat mobile to give them a 35 movement. That also grants ability to dash through difficult terrain with no movement cost, and you can make a melee attack then run away in one turn without provoking an opportunity attack.
If they're 2nd level rogues, they can dash 75 feet.
The hungry kitty haggling with the trader is great! 🤣
This episode has really taught me a lot of how to do social encounters as a dm
My second time watching this campaign through. It is such a good campaign with incredible, yet still down to earth role playing.
I'm only at 16 minutes but I think that Sebastian caused the meteor to crash into Drakkenheim.
Mr. Winn wait..? Is that why he was expelled from the mage college?
Glad I'm not the only one who suddenly had that thought!! HMMMM... did we just uncover Montys end story?!?!
I assume that's how he got his magic.
I forgot where I left off originally but I am happy to re-listen to older parts
Poor Pluto got turned into a pin cushion, hopefully I can finish binge watching so I can watch the game live today.
Session 4 of Monty presenting beautifully done faction intrigue and the group avoiding any and all commitments
