The paramilitaries who live on in Northern Ireland

  • Northern Ireland saw outbreaks of violence last week, which the police said had been orchestrated by paramilitaries.
20 years since the Good Friday Agreement, these outlawed groups - synonymous with atrocities from the past - are still said to be intact and recruiting.
But why do they still exist? And how do they still maintain such a seemingly potent grip in certain communities?

S O , I’m very glad to see comments like yours...
We were brought up in Loyalist parts of the country.
My parents were not hateful and taught us not to hate on basis of religion.
In fact my father was a history student and learned that the English aristocracy despised all of us Protestant or Catholic.
They used religion to divide us because it’s easier to control smaller groups.
I think we were brothers a long time ago before either religion was begun!
      Love will unite us again.!!
Not emotional sentiment I mean love like Jesus (Yeshua) had for us all!

A place where thugs torture kids, shoot people over a bit of pot and terrorise the community relentlessly. The funny part is from what I’ve seen it doesn’t even work, heroin was still common. Needles everywhere and homeless people addicted to drugs.

I feel lucky because I live in Derry, I'm a Catholic living in a predominantly protestant area and I feel in no dnager at all. All the violence that happens in our city or in Belfast is either kept away from us by the news or I miss it when it's on the news.
I have no problem with the orange men marching right outside my doorstep on the 12th as long as they don't insue violence.

there is a "Thin Line" between the two and it is knowing the difference between legitimate combatants and non-combatants. A gun is a discriminate weapon whereas a Bomb is a Non-Discriminant weapon. Understandably bombs are used in warfare to target Command and Control Targets as well as Production facilities supporting one side or the other. Often civilians are caught up in the effects of those bombs, those casualties are considered to be collateral damage and were not the "targets" of the attack. Whereas the Terrorist deliberately targets the civilian population intentionally. I guess what I am trying to point out is that a Soldier is a Legitimate Target as well as the Police. Historical and accepted Laws of War is the point.

@@KeithRingo go and read the witness reports from the very start of the troubles. The people who started the Provo IRA in northern Ireland are all on record. They had no problem with how things were, and most had attempted to join the British army at the time of world war one. When they heard that things were kicking off in Dublin, they believed that the people on Dublin were insane. After the fact they came to believe that if they had of believed in what was happening in Dublin they could have helped more. This is what started them off on believing they could be free. At the start they had protestant backing, some of the founding members were protestant. They lost the Protestant support when sinnfeinn split Catholic areas with the Irish parliamentary party. This splitting of areas was brokered by Catholic priests. This gave the Catholic church direct input into both nationalist politics and the IRA. The protestants almost immediately dropped support for a republic. I know it sells well to say that it was "Irish" Vs "British" but it wasn't, it was "people living in Ireland Vs poor conditions that were prevalent during British rule". The thing is, the pro-treaty party just replaced the British. They are currently building new tenements in the form of shared living, they have people living in tents to do jobs, they have not improved Ireland the way people hoped and fought for. That is why they tell everyone that it was "us Vs the British" absolute nonsense propaganda so that they are not held to account for their failings.

I dislike British Imperialism - HOWEVER To all the "Leave Ireland" comments :It's not as simple as Americans think it is. This is the most basic description I can give.
In the 1600s many Scottish and Northern English settlers fled England and Scotland as they were Protestant Dissenters, and many were under threat of discrimination in their communities or economic ruin in these areas. They were incentivised to settle in Northern Ireland by Anglo-Irish land owners to try and crush anti-Imperial sentiment by building a Loyalist population in NI. These people feel strongly British. The native Irish population hated British occupation and feel strongly Irish.
So the population split between those who feel strongly British and those who feel strongly Irish is near 50/50 in Northern Ireland. The truth is if the UK were to leave it would more than likely stir up sectarian hate once again. Asking Protestant Northern Irish to "Leave" is like asking Americans to leave the US and go back to Europe.

Bare in mind most English, Welsh and Scottish people are painfully indifferent about Northern Ireland - to most of them it's a money sink, a political minefield and up until quite recently there has always been a massive majority opinion favouring Irish reunion even in England.

The British army succeeded in making clear to the Provisional IRA that it could not achieve its objectives through violence although the army did not "win" in any recognisable sense, an internal review of the army's operations in Northern Ireland has concluded.
The review, which deals with Operation Banner - the British army's continuous operational involvement in the North since the "troubles" began in 1969 - does, however, take an apparent contradictory position on whether it defeated the IRA.
The document, which was obtained under freedom of information legislation by the Pat Finucane Centre in Derry, at one stage states that "by 1980 almost all the military structures which eventually defeated PIRA were in place", while also querying "why it then took another quarter of a century to end the campaign".
It describes Operation Banner, which should formally conclude at the end of July, as one of the army's longest campaigns and "one of the very few waged on British soil; and one of the very few ever brought to a successful conclusion by the armed forces of a developed nation against an irregular force".
Later, towards the end of the 98-page review, the three British army officers who were specially seconded to write the document, appeared to conform to the general modern analysis that one of the key reasons the "war" ended was that neither the British army/RUC nor the IRA could defeat each other.
"It should be recognised that the army did not 'win' in any recognisable way; rather it achieved its desired end-state, which allowed a political process to be established without unacceptable levels of intimidation," the officers found

Both disgusting, both well past their time. Ireland still bleeds because of these people. _Sickening._
Unemployed who still grasp on to their daddy's coattails. Unemployment and deprivation are what stoke these fires, not discrimination and inequality. All of these problems and more, spurred on by the powers that be (Sinn Fein, DUP).
I am a united Irelander. I am Irish, as is anyone born within the island of Ireland. To achieve an Ireland united, we must be inclusive. We must prove to the "other" that an Ireland in which they are a part is one that"they" can prosper from. And I know they can.
The troubles of the past were caused by inequality, discrimination and sectarianism. In a united Ireland, these ideas are impossible to uphold. We are a united people. We are one. Let us fight the rest of the world, not each other.
To whomever this concerns, think before you speak. Do not speak for yourself, speak for your country, *_with whom you appear to represent._*

Perhaps then they'd have even the most rudimentary grasp on the north of Ireland and why the Troubles even happened. I know it won't happen though as the average Brit doesn't care about their depraved history. If they did, they would realise that the Nazis look like amateurs in comparison the British Empire machine that slaughtered countless millions in their skin-crawling need to accumulate as much of Earth's wealth as they possibly could. A more deeply creepy history I cannot think of. And that's because there is none.

Bristol was founded as a slave market to sell English people to Ireland. Irish schools have only just started to teach this
Britains law of freedom of speech and equality before the law meant it was more successful than the other empires, as the natives often preferred them to their own rules ....hence less rebellion & a bigger empire
