- Every year dozens of people in Northern Ireland are shot in the legs or assaulted by vigilante armed groups from their own neighbourhoods. These paramilitary-style attacks are known as 'kneecappings' when they are shootings and they can be brutal. They can leave the victims, usually young men, with lifelong physical and mental injuries. Stacey Dooley meets people who have been shot as well as people within affected communities who are standing up to the attackers, and she tries to speak to some of those behind the attacks

I’m from Northern Ireland and still living here. The kneecapping are mostly for drug dealers/ freelancers, and over money, not punishments for daily things. It’s serious matters they are shot over.

Theyre using the same guns they had from before the good Friday agreement, they all came from America and Libya and some of them are from the second world war too, they hid all their firearms when the good Friday agreement was signed in case they needed them in the future if it didn't work out. People find weapons caches round here every so often, there's 100s of them throughout the north and south of Ireland, there's more guns and bombs than there are members of these organisations

The way it is done by the old school is a warning is sent to (usually) a drug dealer or someone who preys on the weak (theives robbing elderly, beating women or children etc). If the behaviour didn't stop within a certain time frame it would be discussed on how to punish the person. This can be a beating, a knee capping or death. It is then carried out by the locals of that community.
You don't get shot multiple times for "having a fight" with someone. If that's what actually happened (which i highly doubt) then this group is in serious trouble of extinction by another more formulated and organised group.

The question is: is there no trial?
Their system is prone to failure. What if a family member of the milizia is accusing an innocent neighbor for something he made up?
Evidence is needed. The accused are subjected to interrogation’s, and if they don’t admit a lot of the time unless evidence is available the accused will be let go. The problem happens when you have men like Freddie scappaticci doing the interrogations. He was a British agent undercover in the IRA who murdered dozens of innocent people to save his own cover.

Nobody should get shot, especially if you just won a fight with one of them, if it was a fair fight nothing should be done whoever wins.
