It is really interesting and the world-building you value in the original story is present in droves. You guys talk about the original story being a story of its time, and the HBO show is also that. Both stories act on the prevailing paranoia at the time. I really hope you guys get to it
When I first heard that HBO was doing a Watchmen sequel series, I was like "no thanks". Recently though I decided to check it out. I've only seen the first five episodes so far, but I can tell you that it's pretty good and definitely worth a watch, man. Now I know that this episode of Elseworlds Exchange is almost a year old at this point, so I'm wondering if you have seen the show yet?
I don’t know why I’m always surprised with how much I love episodes with just Sal and Ethan. I love the whole ComicPOP gang, but there’s just something about this pairing that gets me pumped 💪🏾

It's always fun to get a topic where Ethan is knowledgeable and get to share more of his approach. This really got me looking forward to the Doomsday clock BI. Sal approaches it as a fan of both DC and Watchmen whereas Ethan will from loving Watchmen first and foremost and Im curious how that colors his apprrciation.
I wholeheartedly disagree with the concept that added work whether it's a prequel or a sequel or an adaptation can damage the original piece. So while great things shouldn't be mined dry I think there's no harm in trying something new. Before Watchmen doesn't make Watchmen a worse book. The movie doesn't make the original book worse. This new TV show doesn't make anything that came before any less or anymore than it was. So I think it's only a problem if you make it one.
You guys are nuts but in a great way. Ethan's views on the industry and how things get thought up are a real joy to hear and Sal always has me considering stuff I've not thought of before. Your chemistry together is always top-notch and really shows the friendship you guys have and I can just imagine the two of you spinning off into rants and random conversations outside of the comic topic that leave everyone around you sighing and rolling their eyes thinking "here they go again." Which honestly makes me wonder how often Tiffany has done a "boys" eyeroll when you two get into your groove. And as a Brit, I really should have defended our literature after your brilliant rant but I was laughing too hard to even consider it.
I like hearing you guys talk about Literature. I'm an English major and I'd like to hear a section of this channel where Sal summarizes classic books with Ethan Ben and Tiffany.
I kind of feel that the Watchmen show, though not perfect or exactly like the comic, has its moments. I've been watching the HBO series since the first episode and while it does skirt around the comics using certain things like Ozy's clones, the Treui company, even the new masks, it still feels like it is somehow apart of that universe. They do reference the Keene Act, Laurie takes up mantle of the Comedian, The squid bomb is referenced, the Hooded Justice Origin is done well. Even the music being used is great, and the way it is filmed at times reminds me of what Zack Snyder did in that 2008-2009 film years ago. As an Else world's story in Watchmen universe, so far it is great, but only time will tell and how they choose to finish it.
Okay now that it finished what do you think of it...... I personally loved it... It was different enough from the comic to be it's own thing but it was a worthy sequel...... The acting from everyone was A++

I liked that they delved more into hooded justice characters backstory, and the Minutemen story had more of a connection to the world than just a quick scene here or there. I also liked that they referenced the squid monster from comic instead of cheapening it out and making it a bomb like they did for the movie. The music was a good choice and complimented the series. And Ozy motivations and tactics felt more like ozy from the comics.

Bottom line: No, not everything needs a sequel/adaptation. Watchmen is one of those things. Not all sequels/adaptations are made equally. I feel differently about Watchmen movie than V for Vendetta or League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movies. Snyder justified directing Watchmen by saying the movie was inevitably going to be made anyway, so he wanted it to be done by someone who respects the source material and if it serves as a glorified commercial for the comic he’s happy. I would argue if you really respected Watchmen, you wouldn’t agree to do it - but I find Snyder’s intentions more admirable than most. You cannot sequelize Watchmen without changing the ending. Watchmen did not end with the truth being revealed, nor did it end with the lie being secured. The last words were “I leave it entirely in your hands.” As in you, the reader, decide how the story continues. Not Geoff Johns or Damon Lindeloff or even Alan Moore. That was Moore leaving it to future generations future to read their own meaning into the world he presented. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Geoff Johns and his work. Doomsday Clock is an incredibly daring/ambitious undertaking, but it is only so daring because it should never be done. I’m still waiting on the trade, so I’ll reserve judgement for then - but Johns treads on some THIN ice. I hope it works out. I don’t want to see Johns/Frank to fail and I certainly don’t want a bastardization of Watchmen, so I choose to be positive until I have reason to feel otherwise.
I like how Evil Dead was supposed to be one movie. As opposed to doing a direct sequel and putting the same Ash back into a cabin it remakes the first one and does something different. But then there's that cliffhanger that goes into Army of Darkness.
The entertainment industry is all about branding. If you can create a solid brand, then you have a higher chance of success and watchman has such a strong brand for only being a one off miniseries.
I think, for me, it was even better reading watchman after seeing the movie, because I knew how it was going to end, so I could relax and not sprint to the end, and enjoy the journey. It didn't really ruin anything because the book is amazing, the story is simple, but the way it was written was great...

I personally maintained there shouldn’t be watchmen sequels because personally watchmen has a beginning middle and end and doesn’t need a sequel period.
The Watchmen show, to me, is better than the graphic novel. While still being faithful to the history in the comic, it doesn’t just symbolize one period in American history like it’s predecessor; it encapsulates America’s roots in racism which is pervasive throughout the nation’s entire history. The show realistically expands on Watchmen history while showing that racism and bigotry is the internal disease that is, and had been, more dangerous to American society than a giant squid could ever be (even though, the giant squid did make it worse).

After seeing the first to episodes I got to say the HBO show is brilliant.
Watchmen show slaps and is actually a very faithful spiritual sequel.
Personally, I don't think Watchmen needs sequels or prequels or anything of the sort. That being said, the show is really damn good, and I love it.
