"So? Are you going to do it or not? You gonna man up? Because you probably should. You certainly deserve it." Thank you, Mr. Heart of the Justice League.
Argh, I really want to watch this episode, but a few minutes into the description I had to save it, order the book, and now wait to read it before I watch! Same thing happened with God Country and Batman: The Cult. Thank you for introducing me to interesting books I have never read before. I look forward to watching this video later.
I remember reading a bunch of stuff where John Stewart was responsible for the destruction of a planet, more recently in Justice League, but before that when I was reading the War of Light saga and the GLC stuff with Fatality, but never bothered to figure out when that had happened. Thank you for catching me up on that story.
Honestly, I kinda like the Anti-Life Equation as a sentient being... That way, I can assure myself that Einstein's E=mc2 equation is a huge destructive being with nuclear powers in another dimension (or just a small nerd with teeth braces, much like Sal's Lil' Darkseid)...
Why didn't Green Lantern just hit the robot with a rock? Just lift a large chunk of land or whatever else and smash it on the machine, it's immune to his ring, not gravity
"I'm gonna miss dinner..." I'll be honest, until DC printed that nice HC Deluxe edition of this story I didn't know it even existed. I picked it up and kinda liked it. Mignola's art has a presence about it, but I shamefacedly didn't finish the last few pages. Thanks for covering it for me, Sal n' the gang!
Oh, just read this! One understated thing I thought was cool.. is how you have Starfire playing the Adam Strange role, figuring out the trick to defeat the invading menace. Homage with a twist on the Mystery in Space stories.
THIS is why I love back issues. I’ve been reading comics since the knightfall era of Batman and I love finding good stories in Back issue bins that are from before then. While I love the new stuff there’s always a sense of wonder when looking back so thanks for picking s story that gives me that feeling I will definitely be picking this book up.
I love this book. But Marvel's Annihilation, War of Kings, & Annihilation Conquest are still my most favorite cosmic stories of all. I hope one of those events make it to back issues soon!!!
Cosmic Odyssey and Millennium were the two massive series DC did in 1988! This was back when summer events epic stories were DC and Marvel yearly staples, moreso DC comics though!
You can tell that Tiffany is a fan of John Stewart from the animated series since it seems like she had a bit of a time accepting John from the comics is a bit of a douche and really not that great. THIS is his defining moment from the comics, and its one of complete and utter failure. Other than that the only time hes ever been good is in the television show lol.
the lighting and color is on point! looks great! production value through the roof! of course if you havent changed anything i will just leave it on these settings(lmao) . keep up the great work! thanks for all that you do!
I've been watching you guys for about a year and a half and I have to say I LOVE your channel. Back issues has become the pick-me-up in the middle of the week that I find myself looking forward to. Much love 👍
Mike Mignola is my favorite person working in comics. Whether he's doing covers, interiors, or writing the dude brings his "A" game every freaking time. Only other person who comes close to him imo is Jeff Lemire.
So wait... Is this what inspired Justice League: War? DCCU Justice League? And the New 52 story? Concepts from this have been recycled three different times in three different mediums? Neat. Was gonna say lame, but I find it amusing so NEAT! :)
My point is that the same or similar scene in this exact story of Batman, chasing the Para-demon, is mimicked/homaged, in all three... Justice League: War, New 52 JL Origin, Justice League Movie, etc. So clearly, the concept was recycled, more than once... And there is other parallel's in this, directly inspiring events in all three as well. Whether it is a direct homage or direct inspiration, hard to tell, but it's clear the the similarities are interesting enough to make you wonder.
My question was rhetorical. LOL You're completely missing what I'm saying... I get that, that's not what I'm talking about. At all... I'm talking about singular instances that are similar... I'm not talking STORY at whole cloth. LOL JL Origin, has similar moments as Odyssey. Those same similar moments, are also repeated therefore, strangely enough in the other examples as well... I'm not saying it's verbatim. Dude. LOL *facepalm* I'm reveling in the notion, that those similarities exist, whether they be on purpose, or haphazard homages. They are there. And it amuses me.
Timmy I finished it not too long ago, and it is really good. I'm not sure it's the greatest superhero comic ever written like some say, but I do really like it
I met Mike Mignola at a comic con in boston. I was psyched to meet him as i loved Hellboy, especially at the time. I was very disappointed with the experience. He was a major jerk to me. I asked him : " how long have you planned the current Hellboy story?" (He signs my Gotham by Gaslight) "HELLBOY TOOK ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN!" I grabbed my book and walked away. I was very let down. He is the only creator i have met that wasnt nice to me. He lost a few fans that day cause 2 friends witnessed me get my head bit off by the guy. I never say bad things about creators. I am a fan and have been reading comics since i was 4. I try not to read his stuff now. Which isnt easy cause he is such a great artist and i really do like his work.
Wow he just yelled at you like that? Damn I'm sorry man. You never know how some people we look up to will react and it's a shame some great people act like douchebags for seemingly no reason. They might be having a bad day but how would we know before hand? Take care.
This will go down as one of my favorite DC events. It was the first I read when I got Dc infinite [originally dc universe] and also the first cosmic dc story I ever read, at four issues [with each issue feeling slightly longer than a normal one] its the perfect length. not too long, not too short. It does its purpose and it does it well. a classic, fun back issues for a classic, fun story
Kirby’s New Gods are one of my favorite series of all time! Great art, great plots and weird Shakespearean dialogue from Kirby. You should read Orion by Walt Simonson from the 90’s, probably my favorite non-Kirby New Gods book and a great introduction for them.
They also make reference to this book in the Justice League cartoon in the Blackest Night episode where John Stewart is put on trial for accidentally blowing up a planet. In the end it turns out it was an illusion set up by the Manhunters, but it’s a great look into John Stewart’s character and unshakeable morality
When you say Jack Kirby created everything stan Lee gets credit for I think of the old x play skits about that very thing. Roger the stan lee experience. To me it was the funniest thing ever still is check it out for some laughs
Xanshi's destruction is something that's been referenced in Green Lantern comics continuously since this was written. It was absolutely a hugely defining moment for John and it's haunted him ever since.
"So? Are you going to do it or not? You gonna man up? Because you probably should. You certainly deserve it."
Thank you, Mr. Heart of the Justice League.
Anytime salan moore makes an appearance my day is automatically made
“Star is in his name”
We must protect Ben at all costs lol
Ah yes Cosmic Odyssey, the book that haunts John Stewart forever and references anytime he can
I was wondering what John Stewart was referencing during the new Justice League run.
Yea he talked about it in the new JL run
OH SHIT!
This is the Xanshi Incident that was mentioned in the current Justice League run!!!
Thanks Sal
Ben: "All fire is is a chemical reaction." Did Ethan possess Ben for a second there?
He's more than a pretty face.
Oh, he's more than proved that before. ;) I guess just the way he said that, he sounded super scientific in that moment. XD
Argh, I really want to watch this episode, but a few minutes into the description I had to save it, order the book, and now wait to read it before I watch! Same thing happened with God Country and Batman: The Cult. Thank you for introducing me to interesting books I have never read before. I look forward to watching this video later.
This had happened to me many times.
I remember reading a bunch of stuff where John Stewart was responsible for the destruction of a planet, more recently in Justice League, but before that when I was reading the War of Light saga and the GLC stuff with Fatality, but never bothered to figure out when that had happened. Thank you for catching me up on that story.
When you said Jason Blood, I was at first like who the hell is that. But then when you said "He doesn't want to be there". I was like Oh, its Etrigan.
28:30
Tifanny should do some "Thanagarian Hot Wings" in a cooking episode then haha
Are we still doing the thing where we get a postcard if we point out Ben wearing the skull shirt???
Wow! We're out of those, but please accept a ComicPOP No-Prize!
The whole Xanshi stuff also played a big role in the Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi Green Lantern (Corps) run
New gods? Darkseid? An event I have never heard of? Strap in for a wild ride true believers
Ungreatful Duck true believers can be either from marvel or DC. What makes a true believer is just someone who loves the medium
Yo, that Batman monologues between Sal, Ben and Tiff is just priceless haha
"Is jack kirby an old guy???"
Oh we're in for a good one folks😂
10:28 "It's my transient alter ego... P-... Patches Palone."
Oh wow, this is how Xanshi died? I always knew Jon Stewart's arrogance led to the death of a planet never knew which story it was.
Why didn't Green Lantern just hit the robot with a rock? Just lift a large chunk of land or whatever else and smash it on the machine, it's immune to his ring, not gravity
They made a point that by the time he got there there was no time.
Sal's Parademon beat cop got me good.
Oh, just read this! One understated thing I thought was cool.. is how you have Starfire playing the Adam Strange role, figuring out the trick to defeat the invading menace. Homage with a twist on the Mystery in Space stories.
I love this story. I feel like it's an underrated classic.
I freaking adore Mike Mignola's art style. I'd love to see you guys cover Hellboy some day. Maybe when the new film eventually comes out? (Wink wink)
Ungreatful Duck weird that Wytches wasn't mentioned.
THIS is why I love back issues. I’ve been reading comics since the knightfall era of Batman and I love finding good stories in Back issue bins that are from before then. 37:56 Who knew Rich Johnson was a doomsday bomb?
Also, this book informs the wonderful Bug! miniseries from last year, at least the first issue.
Mignola's art is so rad!
Cosmic Odyssey and Millennium were the two massive series DC did in 1988! This was back when summer events epic stories were DC and Marvel yearly staples, moreso DC comics though!
It sounds like the Comic Pop team wants a sentient Parademon book... and now so do I.
Is the book sentient?
*looks around the room* ...yes
You can tell that Tiffany is a fan of John Stewart from the animated series since it seems like she had a bit of a time accepting John from the comics is a bit of a douche and really not that great. THIS is his defining moment from the comics, and its one of complete and utter failure. Other than that the only time hes ever been good is in the television show lol.
A 4 issue miniseries about 4 justice league teams trying to stop big monsters from destroying 4 things..... sounds familiar
Ikr, JL No Justice.
the lighting and color is on point! looks great! production value through the roof! of course if you havent changed anything i will just leave it on these settings(lmao) . keep up the great work! thanks for all that you do!
the background with that lighting looks really good guys
2 years late but I agree
Etrigon could be the greatest rapper of all time if he really wanted to.
I've been watching you guys for about a year and a half and I have to say I LOVE your channel. Back issues has become the pick-me-up in the middle of the week that I find myself looking forward to. Much love 👍
Having a really crappy day. Thanks gang for the early post
As usual a great episode made all the better as a welcome distraction from being in the hospital AGAIN! LOL
Langley M Neely I'm so sorry!! I hope you're out soon!
TheRealZubes Aww thank you Tiff! I should be out any day now, but ComicPop and Back Issues are a perfect entertainment companion !Cheers!
Just looking at that background cover, soooo many big belts
This was my first super-hero comic-book. T'ill this day, im glad it was.
New set upgrades looking good gang! Keep it up!
Don’t mind me, just waiting for the moustache guy’s comment.
Shh, don't speak his name aloud!
"God damn it I was in the middle of watching my soaps! What the hell do you want?"
i saw you in a video of pewdiepie
Just Some Guy with a Mustache ... And Lo and Behold!!! lol
New Camera? Looks CRISP!
How am I suppose to finish the back issues playlist if you keep making new ones, I'm not going fast enough, I need more timeeeee.
FlashPool use the speed force and time travel!
I'm also working on this right now. I'm around the 150s and I've already rewatched a few
Same
It's okay FlashPool just go faster than you ever have before and you got this
How does rob have over 1.5 million sub's and this gem of a channel is below 100k?
Mike Mignola is my favorite person working in comics. Whether he's doing covers, interiors, or writing the dude brings his "A" game every freaking time. Only other person who comes close to him imo is Jeff Lemire.

Apparently also an episode of the Justice league series.
Do you think you guys will ever do Robert Kirkman’s Invincible? It’s a great series, and I know you guys sometimes do Image books every now and then.
Timmy if they do, they'll probably work through it like they are with Ultimate Spiderman
SimplySam I would like that.
Timmy I finished it not too long ago, and it is really good. I'm not sure it's the greatest superhero comic ever written like some say, but I do really like it
Noah Baia I know right! It’s excellent, I’ve never even noticed Sal even acknowledging it’s existence though.
Sal has shown a great disinterest in Ryan Ottleys art, so I wouldn't hold my breath.
Blazing Saddles reference!!!!
I met Mike Mignola at a comic con in boston. I was psyched to meet him as i loved Hellboy, especially at the time. I was very disappointed with the experience. He was a major jerk to me. I asked him :

BatTiff finally made it to Back Issues.
I love cosmic odyssey thank you
Thank you for the Blazing Saddle reference
I wonder what I was doing five years ago, to where I’d miss this episode. Happy I came
Across it now though
This will go down as one of my favorite DC events. I read this story years ago. Its a fun story. Great episode Sal.
not even a full minute in and I laughed. Your sense of huor is amazing, guys:D
Early back issues
Nice
Love the Blazing Saddles reference.
Whoa, were those purple lights there before?
yay early back issues
They also make reference to this book in the Justice League cartoon in the Blackest Night episode where John Stewart is put on trial for accidentally blowing up a planet. In the end it turns out it was an illusion set up by the Manhunters, but it’s a great look into John Stewart’s character and unshakeable morality
Yes! This story is crazy, I'm glad you guys got around to it.
Tiff face was priceless when Sal said Wang lol lol
is it just me or is this out super early this week. i usually don't get to listen to back issues til night
Jim Starlin is my favorite Batman writer.
If that happened to me in real life, it would probably haunt me until the day i died.
Back issues!!Nice way to start the day!
DUUUUUDDDDEEE I remember reading this a kid.... g'damn that was buried deep...
Bat tiff on back issues my day is much better now
Little that we know that this comic would be a big lynchpin in the DC universe today
I read blackest night not knowing what that planet was
Love you guys, keep up the great work ☺
Welp, I guess Ethan got too physical again. Hasn't been around for the past few videos
More like this is the first episode he hasn't been on in over a month. But sure.
ComicPOP touché good sir
Ben is such A daddy😍😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰
Because Magic? That sounds like the same reason behind One More Day
Early back issues sweet a late birthday gift. 😍 (July 28th)
I really want Etrigan to start a band or put out an album and have it become a running gag in the DC universe.
I love this book!!!! The art is one of favorite!
John Stewart’s failure has been a big aspect for the character ever since that story it’s been brought up so many times
Boom tubes that are preceded by booms, so we need punches preceded by pows!
Heck yeah a blazing saddles reference
You should do a weird Justice Society Back Issues sometime
Great episode
We need more Sallen Moore for sure
Who's is the bearded guy in glasses who painted the bomb yellow, so John Stewart can't do anything to stop it from exploding?
37:44 "Gotcha bitch!"
I know they’ve said why they wont do it, but am I the only one still waiting for them to do a Watchmen back issues?
JMS's Spiderman Soon?
Love these videos
The beginning of this is the same as the JL flick.
Yes! I love this book!
When we are on Mignola topic, Hellboy back issues comin?
Haha some Bat-Tiff on Back Issues being all inappropriate. :)
Mike Mignolas best style
Did you guys ever see the new 52 animated movies? The creation of parademons in that is horrific
That grifter mask is pretty badass. Where did you get it?
NYCC
