The round peg on the choke lever is used to block the fuel line when you remove the carb.. no need for pinchers etc. Just pull the lever off and stick it in the pipe
i know Im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a method to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Wayne Fabian I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
My late husband bought me a used bcs tiller with a 5.5 honda engine like this one so I could garden. Unfortunately he passed away before fixing it for me and I cannot get it to start! Thank you for this video as now I think I have enough information to check if it's something simple (like no fuel or no spark) that I can fix myself.
you saved my life. this motor has been a dream for years and then it didn't start. pilot jet was plugged. thanks from Port moody British Columbia Canada
I work and re-build these engines and it's a common fault that the main jet ( pilot jet you called it ) gets clogged. Also by the looks of it you need new piston rings as it was burning oil ( blue smoke ) and that is probably the reason why your compression readings are low.
Thanks. Exact engine and problem I have. Cleaned and checked everything short of pulling the carb. That's next and I'm pretty sure I'll find a clogged jet or pilot or whatever it's called when I do. Thanks again, you really can't kill these honda engines.
Great practical video. I just fixed GCV160 that had a clogged main jet. Bought it from a guy who had replaced many parts and couldn't get it to run. Gave up and sold it to me real cheap.
Thank you so much for this! I had everything in bits and was about to throw the carb away until I saw your video! Exact same problem. Only thing is the person before me has snapped off the screw head for the jet, so couldn’t get it out. I managed to clean it out in situ using lots of brake cleaner and .6 welding wire! Started on the first pull! Thank you.
Top tip for you. No need to pinch the hose, if you remove the choke lever it fits perfectly in the fuel hose. Honda think of everything. The pilot you refer to is the main jet. Once this is out you tap the carb on the bench another bigger jet will drop out which will also need cleaning. ( honda trained industrial engine tech )
Jason Tearne hi there just want some advice on a Honda gx160 on a concrete power trowel, when I start it up, it fires straight into gear and fast too, not idle at all. Recently new throttle linkage, cable, air filter & outer casing. Any help would be much appreciated thanks
karl luke under the fuel tank is the governor control arm and this may need resetting. Remove tank. Loosen the 10mm nut. Set rhe throttle arm at full revs. Use a pair of pliers and set the pin ( just above the 10mm nut , you will see there is a notch for your pliers ) and with your pliers on the left move the pin until it stops. Tighten nut refit fuel tank set throttle arm to tickover start engine. Hope this is helpful and not over compicated
The jet is a main jet. And you should also remove the emulsion tube under the main jet and clean out the many tiny holes. Also you only need to remove the three carb nuts and bolt, and not the top plate to save some time. I also use carb cleaner spray and not sea foam but that is only a preference. Good job.
Yep, if this is the same as on my GX390, and it does appear to be the same, the pilot jet is on the left side of the carb (black plastic 'plug') that's held in place by the idle speed screw. The pilot air adjustment screw is also on the left side by the mounting flange, hidden under a tiny square plastic cover. And, while the video was a good complete introduction to small engine trouble shooting (air, compression, fuel, spark), if you have a Honda engine (or any small engine, for that matter), that's been sitting for awhile and won't start, I'd go right to that float bowl and main jet first. I think 90% of no-start problems on small engines are caused by a fouled main jet due to stale fuel left in the machine during the off-season. In my experience, another leading cause of no-start problems on these Honda engines is that they are sensitive to spark plug fouling, and tend to run overly rich which leads to fouling. Someone I know has a small Honda engine on a pump which he uses several times per day in his business. He has learned to keep a handful of spare plugs on hand. The engine will start first-pull and run great for days and days, and then one day it will absolutely refuse to start. He knows to just change the plug. Often, changing back to a previously used plug will work too. They are finicky about spark plugs.
Thank you getting ready for Hurricane Mathew and generator wouldn't start till i saw this video. I had put a new carb on 20bucks but for some reason full wasn't reaching the bowl. Your tip on the bowl help me get it started in 10 mins :). Thanks again!
I don't know if this applies specifically to your engine, but some small engines have a compression release mechanism on the intake or exhaust valve. This delays the valve timing so that the compression is lower, but still strong enough to run. The purpose is to make it a little easier to pull start these engines with a cord. I have an engine that won't run unless I start it with starting fluid. My jets are open as best as I can determine, new gas. I can run a fine wire up through the jet (but I can't remove the jet; in too tight). I think I'll remove the carb again and soak it.
Sometimes the seals/gaskets deteriorate and get leaky and that causes the engine vacuum to be so low that it will not draw in fuel without starting fluid to get it going. I have an old Briggs engine that I have a can of starting fluid attached with a tube into the carb so I just reach down and hit the aerosol button when starting cold.
Quick tip as far as the to much fuel issue goes make sure your needle seat isn’t swollen because what happened is when that needle seat is swollen it will keep the float from completely stopping the fuel supply to the carburetor and the float will stay open so make sure your seat isn’t swollen.
+Jack Maxfield i dunno if it's true or not but they say with todays fuel stabilizer really doesn't do much anymore at least to the article i was reading on fuels. But this is the internet and anythings goes lol
Hi there I just got one of this engines today for free. It was at the back of the shop. It’s hook to a water pump 2”. Can I take the pump off and put a pulley on it just like the one on yours ?
total novice here, but trying to learn... bought a wb20x from an auction, had gas in it, no muffler, no idea if it ran. replaced the carb, got a muffler, new sparkplug, changed the oil, checked the air filter, cleaned the gas tank... when i pull, it doesn' even try to turn over, much like what you have. i thought i had covered the 'air, fuel, spark' stuff... what am i missing? not afraid to pull the whole thing apart but don't want to if i don't have to.
Hi. I have a generator works when the choke is off, and never works when the chock is on. Which should be the opposite normally. Noting that it has a new battery, a new spark, the carb is clean, oil is on maximum level… Everything is in good condition. What will be the problem please?
Thanks for posting this. I have a belle 150 with honda 120 engine. I'm simply getting a blac k sooty plug, occasionally wet, no matter what I do with the choke ??? New plug, new air filter, new oil filled as per manual, fresh fuel. Clean the plug, start it and it fires and runs for about 30 seconds or longer then cuts out, black plug again. Checked the carb, defo getting fuel. A few months ago I used it to mix founds for a conservatory and it ran all day ??
Sounds like the float needle isn't plugging the hole allowing too much fuel into the carb. Remove the bowl and float and clean the needle if dirty, replace if damaged. If that's not it IDK what to tell you.
Is this engine running? If not check oil to see if it is thin/smells like fuel... The seat and needle in these carbs can go bad with ethanol causing fuel to leak into crankcase. Tell tale sign is running for only a few seconds at a time and white smoke coming from exhaust. Would recommend putting a new carb on which is less than $20 and changing oil out.
It could be a leaky float or the level could be wrong, they can be adjusted by heating them up with a heat gun apparently ! It could also be a leaky needle & seat, low compression can give symptoms of a fuel issue such as blowing black smoke,I assume this is the engine that you had to replace the block on ?
Hey man did you by chance pull the valve cover and check the valve lash? That can cause all sorts of havoc on those OHV engines. if someone's been revving the shit out of it there is a good chance of too wide a gap on the valves. Just a thought. Cheers
That's a good point to get attention. It seems this Honda has served years (decades?) as a reliable workhorse and the valve gaps might be needed some adjustments.
I have a GX120 with a COMPLETELY different carburetor filter and assembly. It's shaped like a donut and I can't find one anywhere. Do you know why they made different carburetor filters for the same engine?
I have a Honda GX120 for my first engine to fix, but it ran a sprayer tender pump and the oil is like thick chocolate milk and it is seized up. I can't pull in the string. Is this project even worth taking apart and rebuilding?
Hi, I have a Honda 2 stroke engine on a mini dumper, it seems the fuel dries up in the fuel filter chamber type thing, it’s a little glass chamber. Have you tried to knock it with a hammer or something? It might be possible that the longer jet is installed with the wrong side down? There are aftermarket carburetors at ebay or amazon for about 20 euros.
There's a mixture screw right next to your rocker cover/ valves. Half way down the side. 1 1/2 turns out to start then adjust when warm. Sounds like its had some ethanol gas in that Honda as the carbs used on Honda's are fairly reliable. Honda engines are used quite a bit out on the West coast for pumps the engine can be a ball of rust the Honda starts every time.
Does anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram for a Honda GX390 with key start I have a Kenowa 10000 watt generator with a clone Honda GX390 I remove the wires and cannot figure out how they go back any information would be greatly appreciated
Actually, no. Looking down into a live volcano is awe-inspiring. Watching a shuttle liftoff creates awe. A baby being born is awe. But a video about a gunky engine ?? Hardly awe. Unless you REALLY have no life.
Hello, I had a similar problem only with the engine GX160, he would not start and still extinguished, not the fault of the candle alni engine but SENSOR OIL !! Thank you for the video I have one of these motors in a quad with go cart rear ended n hasn’t been fired in two years watch the video n got it fired

Thanks man! Exact same issue on my Simpson pressure washer that was used twice.
Great video - thanks Jerry! Ethanol based fuels will gum up a carb fast if they aren't run often. A little Stabil in the fuel helps a lot.

Thank you very much mate. This sorted mine appreciate

great help getting my honda gx 120 started ....
That was awesome mate. Thankyou
Nice troubleshooting list
Thank you sir. I learned something new. "seafoam" fuel engine cleaner. :-)
thanks man. let me go into battle now.
that white plastic choke lever pops off and has an end that fits in the gas line to plug it while carb is off. :) and yes, seafoam is quite awesome!
Great bit of information, thanks very much

Have the same issue, did all the same trouble shooting and figured it was in the carb. I was going to rip it apart but new carb on Amazon for $21
cheers boss.did not av one ginger moment with this video, and me gen works perfik
Use the throttle/choke white lever. The round part is for the gas line to plug it. Cheers.
This fix my gx240 thanks for the video
the main jet its called lol im only busting because i just learned that myself but also learning some stuff from you ..thank you ::)
What is the size of the main jet --- i got a carb off ebay and it runs only with choke on I am thinking the main jet is too small.
It purees like a kitten!I follow you..

Jon Chiplock where can I buy a new carb for my 390 Honda for that little bit?
what was that what he put in there and were did that go??? 3:49
He poured gas down the carburetor.
Thank you, beautiful person.

That's a good point to get attention. It seems this Honda has served years (decades?) as a reliable workhorse and the valve gaps might be needed some adjustments.
Very helpful... thanks heaps
How did you get to that bit that was blocked? Is it in where the float is?
Thank you for the education
Thanks, great vid Jerry.
Great video and can't thank you enough, thanks
My 6.5 hp carb keeps leaking at 2 gasket after insulator. Tried changing gasket to no avail. What cud be the problem?
Peter Mugo the float
I have a GX120 with a COMPLETELY different carburetor filter and assembly. It's shaped like a donut and I can't find one anywhere. Do you know why they made different carburetor filters for the same engine?
Thanks very much
I have a Honda GX120 for my first engine to fix, but it ran a sprayer tender pump and the oil is like thick chocolate milk and it is seized up. I can't pull in the string. Is this project even worth taking apart and rebuilding?
Probably badly worn rings, maybe rod bearing (or sleeve). Likely oil never changed. Would require major rebuild, not just cleaning.
honda gx 120 can be equipped with an electric starter? The ones for GX 160 fit GX120 also?
I think what you called a pilot jet is actually the main jet.
there is a pilot jet too
No MFBT!? NO!
Good Job man)
+KIevMan not on this channel no
Very helpful thank you
Good job!!!

Your problem is ethanol in the gas; that screws up everything in the carb sooner or later. Clean all carb out and use Lucas ethanol treatment in your gas.
Fantastic video
how did you know it was an overuse of fuel
I dont have my pull cord on my gx engine I was wondering which way does the engine supposed to turn when cracking, clockwise or counter clockwise?
Thanks I think that is my problem. I have the same engine.
Keep me posted on what you find
Honda engines have a decompression lever on the camshaft gear which gives a false low compression reading. Only way to really check a Honda is to either open valve cover and disable exhaust rocker, do a leak down test or take it apart and check tolerances.
I have a Honda Gx 240 8.0 and 8m having trouble starting it
Always put a new plug in,and check oil level first,🎉
What is the reason When the engine is running, the engine oil will drop
Hello! Could you damage this engine if you work on it with the shaft in vertical position?
I had the oil enter the exhaust and when i tried to start it, it felt as something was blocking it. I removed the valve cover and the arm that pushes the exhaust valve was pushing on the side of the spring. Also the guide plate for the push rod was worn out on the side and the gap of the valves felt like 1mm, not 0.15-0.2mm.
Thank you !
Thanks buddy !
I was able to remove the "pilot jet" but wasn't able to remove the longer jet that supposed to slide out ones that small jet is removed, could that be causing my engine not to start?
Have you tried to knock it with a hammer or something? It might be possible that the longer jet is installed with the wrong side down? There are aftermarket carburetors at ebay or amazon for about 20 euros.
There's a mixture screw right next to your rocker cover/ valves. Half way down the side. 1 1/2 turns out to start then adjust when warm. Check to see if a previous Muppet has tightened it to start adjustment so much they broke the needle of the screw and jammed it in the carb body. GX clone carb will not fit the genuine GX needle hole, different profile needles and holes. Buy genuine. They're better.
Hello, I have the same engine on my power sprayer rig, the damn thing is hard to start. When I pull the handle it is very stiff, then it eases up a little but, I have to really pull on that to get it going. Any ideas? Too much compression, should I change my oil, I just replaced the spark plug.
It needs the valves adjusted. Will pull easier after that.
Your new fuel issue is the needle and seat are worn letting fuel push into the engine.
+retiredppd that could be very possible for sure, i've been making a effort to start it and run it when i' go into the garage, fresh fuel and seafoam in the tank is making it run better everyday. it can even idle on its own now.
My go cart is taking off by its self as soon as I start it. Do u know what it could be
Short throttle cable
on my gx340 i put new cảb on but i still kêp getting oil comeing out ò the valve cover tube when started whats my problem
Positive crankcase ventilation tube ? Thats kinda what they do.
That was great, my plate vibrator/compactor starts fine, but only runs for 30 seconds, then it starts first pull, then it again only runs for 30 seconds. ???
White smoke is an indication of oil burning, either valve or ring issue. Black smoke is an indication of too rich a fuel mixture.
Steven Kulsum, if that's your experience then so be it.
Grey or white smoke is a sign of water emulsion in fuel
engine start but suddenly became off .what is the problem
Well done boy.
Thanks man, totally helped me with my gx270, rep!
Thank you !!.
amigo la palanquita blanca del estarter tiene una punta que vale para taponar la goma de combustible cuando se desmonta ell carburador
great work
Sounds like its had some ethanol gas in that Honda as the carbs used on Honda's are fairly reliable. Honda engines are used quite a bit out on the West coast for pumps the engine can be a ball of rust the Honda starts every time.
+Graveltrucking its hard to say apparently these engines used to be used at a golf course attached to pumps so most likely they were never ever used.
why is blowing so much smoke ?
Does anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram for a Honda GX390 with key start I have a Kenowa 10000 watt generator with a clone Honda GX390 I remove the wires and cannot figure out how they go back any information would be greatly appreciated
Looks like it's running rich. Upgrade to a mikuni 22mm that has idle and rich mixture adjustments
i got the same engine n same problem..mine has spark and compression..maybe it need carb clean..
Yes carb clean !
+Josh Young yes i finally got it working again. thanks Bro..
Great video dude
You don't need to take that plate off that holds the the spring and arm, the bolt to the left is on the carburetor is all you have to take off
I have the GX 390, I hope I have the same luck as Neal Crz.
.
Your video is awesome.
Actually, no. Looking down into a live volcano is awe-inspiring. Watching a shuttle liftoff creates awe. A baby being born is awe. But a video about a gunky engine ?? Hardly awe. Unless you REALLY have no life.
