  • Here's a quick little ad for the VHS and DVD release of "Scary Movie", as aired over KMSB on December 17, 2000, during the original telecast of the X-Files episode "Via Negativa".
COMMENT: I watched this film off of an Australian DVD I have of it (Roadshow 102879-9). I found it . . . woefully uneven. Parts of it are funny, and the funny parts are mainly those that are centered around lampooning mad slasher movies (although you can argue that Wes Craven did the same thing in the "Scream" franchise, which was the main target of the picture's satirical gun). The rest of its 85 minutes (the approximate running time this goes for in PAL speed) are a groanfest, and, unfortunately, it has a horrifically bigoted undercurrent that pokes fun at LGBTQIA+ people and women, something Peter Howell of the Toronto Star also observed in a review he did on the film's initial release (web.archive.or... ). Still, it managed to set a record at the time of its release: it had the biggest opening weekend for a Black filmmaker and for R-rated films in general.
