    Shields are a widely debated topic in the Multiversus space at the momment. Some players believe it will save Multiversus while others think that shields may be the final nail in it's coffin.

      I genuinely thought that I was probably going to hate them, but I went in with an open mind, and honestly so far they’ve been a ton of fun.
      I have years and years of prior trad fighter experience (still love ’em!) so I’m extremely accustomed to conventional blocking in fighting games, and I’ve always appreciated plat fighters in theory, but MVS is the very first plat fighter that ever actually clicked for me personally… and the really funny part here is that the _lack_ of shields was one of the two key things that initially made me want to try MVS in the first place.
      (For whatever it’s worth, the _other_ main draw for me was its design focus on 2v2, which has only proven itself to be more and more unique-and worthwhile to me-as my understanding of the genre has deepened.)

      I just stop played after 450 hours of game because of this shield, at high rating its not really game changer, its game breaker, you just no more play like before, waiting to counter your opponent with your shield to start your combo, so the game is becoming less reactiv. I just found 0 utility, even raven and black adam spell shield becomes useless because the new one is rly too strong... so yep idk, i think i will not comeback to this game until this thing is here, to my opinion they have to fix something because thats too much powerfull and become a must do for the win, even if your opponent is better you can counter him this way.

    The one thing I’m worried about is that the ‘shield counter’ moves are literally just used to counter shields. Grabs in games like smash and rivals 2 have some genuine qualities: combo throws, kill throws, kill confirms off of a throw, etc, and the choice of 4 directions to throw means it’s very expressive, meaning that people still wanna grab even if it’s not just to beat shields. These ‘shield counter’ moves feel like a tacky way to make sure shields have a counter. It’s a hard read towards shields with minimal payoff if they don’t hit a shield. Furthermore, they reuse animations from other moves, which is just lazy. I get that adding grabs would take a lot of time, but it still just feels like they are doing the absolute bare minimum when asked to ‘add shields’

      Mm, really interesting point! I appreciate your thoughts on this.
      Shield breakers do also break armor, for whatever that’s worth. (But armor breakers do not break shields.)
      I’m honestly not toooo concerned about the mostly one-note utility of shield breakers, since this is largely how throws work in a whole lot of classical fighting games (SF and the like), but I have to agree with you that it’s just generally cool when different subsystems have more interaction or interconnectivity with each other.

    I agree heavily but theres some major talking points yet to be discussed. What do shields mean for armor moves? since most armor moves are on the ground will they and armor crush moves fall into obscurity? what about command grabs significantly going up in poiwer and making characters (jason) busted? these characters movement may now be more accepting of shields but what about the moves? will some moves be safe on shield or is everyone going to be spamming shieldbreak due to how unsafe everything else would be?

      another way to word that last part is why risk going for a combo starter if they can just shield it and go for their own combo if you hit them?

      From what I kno armor break moves are safer on shield, allowing you to pressure shields better, some moves also cross up shield making ur opponent whiff punishes… armored moves will always b strong shield or not

      Armor breaker moves are supposed to be safer on shield, but the problem I’m seeing currently is that they still have too much whiff to actually be safe meaning they just get punished like any other attack. I would like to see armor breaking attacks deal massive amounts of shield damage (like 2 bars worth) so that they could be used to punish someone for shielding too much when their shield health is low. This would also give dash attacks more viability because of the dash attack armor break perk allowing characters to break shields with a burst option to punish turtling. And heavy projectiles should completely break shields (except Jerry shot) so that they are still threatening neutral tools and maintain the identity of the characters who have them (mainly Bugs)

      @@hoagieland3716 this is true… but the question is how do you balance this, bcuz u don’t want Wonder Woman sairing all ova ur shield with no way to punish it… I think the armor moves should do considerably more shield damage and shield stun so it can b safer but u also can not act out of the move immediately making the move more of a back to neutral kind of thing… it stops for example Wonder Woman from being able to mash on shield uncontested but also still allows her to do good shield pressure and shield damage as well

      @@hoagieland3716 basically armor break moves should b tools that can b used to force people to drop shield but not super safe options to mash on a shielded opponent… if I have a healthy shield then I should b able to shield the armor move and force a return to neutral, if my shield isn’t healthy then the armor break move should b able to pressure me enough to drop shield early or break my shield all together

    Rivals of Aether and Brawlhalla have shown that you can make a successful platform fighter without shields. But it's arguable whether or not Multiversus, in its current state, is fun without shields. The main problem is with characters that have moves that travel a far distance, are an constant threat, and can kill at high percents. The two best examples I can think of are Shaggy and Taz with their side specials. After trying shields in testing grounds, I will say that shields do help in countering those types of moves, and personally make the game feel more fun to play. I honestly wouldn't mind at all if shields get implemented into the full game. Just some tweaks I'd like to see include the ability to assign the shield break move to a button, make the shielding animated different from their parry animation, and give the shield break move a unique animation instead of reusing a pre-existing move. Also, they should nerf Taz tornado, that move deletes nearly a full bar of dodge meter just by shielding it.

    Another well-made video as always!
    I'm definitely reposting this whenever I see someone make the same complaints about adding shields to the game. I'm very excited about their implementation. The old version of MVS wouldn't need shields but this new version definitely needs them. The tournament's using shields have been 100x more fun to watch and have showcased a lot more depth to the combat of the game.
    My hopes for shield is that they make a way for some moves to be safe on shield, whether its through shield pushback, landing aerial attack cancel on hit when touching the ground, or whatever they decide to do. Shields feel a little too one dimensional right now.
    Also I hope they give us better visual fx for the shield, I would like to see something different than a shield bubble maybe like a gem or something that would differentiate it from a typical platform fighter. Also the animations for shielding on the characters look incredibly stiff.
    Lastly, I hate that holding left or right with shield causes a dodge, after a second or two, I want to be able to walk up and shield without worrying about triggering a dodge.

    My problem is that shields don’t fix jabversus. The most optimal punish out of shield for 90% of the cast is jab or dodge jab, so all we did was move the overcentralizing jab issue around instead of outright removing it. The real issue I feel for why jabs are so strong is because most characters do not have a viable alternative. It’s no surprise that the overwhelming majority of the top tiers currently are ones with both jab combo starters AND aerial combo starters. Due to how jabs work, they will never not be a strong option unless you remove their entire combo-ability. I think people would be significantly less reliant on jabs if more characters had reliable aerial combo starters to use instead of jab. They’ve started to do this a bit by making more characters have ground bounce aerials (Jason nair, Jake nair, Harley sair, Banana Guard nair, etc), but I feel a lot of characters are missing aerial combo starters that aren’t risky dairs with a decent amount of whiff. I think adding more aerial combo starters will create significantly less reliance on jabs because all I’ve seen from Schwifty Showdown is people using jab out of shield instead of just jab in neutral

    Shields are actually a lot of fun and I'd really like to see them be implemented. But on MultiVersus losing its personality, you were right about the unique character movesets. As long they don't make another Samurai Jack where every move looks and functions the same, the personality should still be there. Pls don't make another Jack, PFG, so many sword moves 😖

    I strongly agree with shields because multi is one of those games that need it. In other fights I’ve played like mortal kombat, street fighter, smash. Whiffing attacks depending what is gets punished by said counter attack with shields. I find myself extremely frustrated when I play switch from Batman to raven just because my jab on raven can’t punish whiffed attacks compared to Batman. On top of characters having super hard knock back attacks that people spam and require shields especially with how hitboxes are in the game.

    My main issue with implementing an entirely new major mechanic to the game is that my main issue with the game was not the gameplay loop, it was the glitches, visual and functional, and the lack of substantive content.
    Implementing shields will do wonders for the gameplay if properly implemented, but the fact stands that the game was not designed with these mechanics and their corresponding counterplay in mind, and each and every character’s interaction with them is going to require a lot more work than reusing an animation for a “shield breaker move” to be believable and intuitive to a casual audience.
    Multiversus doesn’t need grabs to be fun, but it didn’t need shields either. It needed consistent, and confident character design, proper balancing, and a QA department.

      The truth is they do bug fixing, balancing and hitbox adjustments every patch. The problem is that it is never enough.
      It's time for them to get serious and make more drastic changes that will benefit the game. Personally, I think they should remove dodging entirely after shields and replace the mechanic with dashing. The dodge mechanic simply can't work in a Platform Fighter.

    My main issue with shields is how they interact with aerials. In every fightinh game the blocking sistem is build considering that aerials should be safer on shields than grounded attacks, witch clashes with the wacky ass aerials this game has

    Dodge cancels is better done in rivals of aether. button combos is better done in rivals of aether. better kits is done in rivals of aether as well
