Obviously, we needed to share why it's legal and safe for deaf people to drive. We answer your questions in this video while Ryan drives around, and in our next video, Coming Soon, we will share some information that might even change your mind.

@@portaldolphin13 trust me they arent the same. My old car's volume at a 20 would be like a 2 in my new car with the premium sound system. It depends on the power of the speaker and the amount of speakers in the car
ok but i ride a motorcycle, they are very small and sometimes not noticeable. We use sound so we dont die when riding

I have a hearing loss and I turn off my hearing aids because they suck for music, so then I can feel the music better, and also hear it more clear since the speakers are better than going from speakers to hearing aids. Yeah I could hear a siren, and a honk, but not much else, but what else is there to hear?

My managers older brother is deaf. When my manager finished work his brother would pick him up. I told him "how can he drive if u can't hear"? He told me he can feel if he hit something, & his car was a 2014 dodge charger with fancy gadgets. He also has never been pulled over.

When I was a kid, I remember my dad teaching me a lesson about if I one day lost my vision. I was filling up a jug of water with my eyes closed and managed to stop it when it get to the top just because I was able to hear the difference as it was filling up.
I had always heard that sound as it was filling up, but never really cared because I could see. All of a sudden when you take your vision away and rely on other senses, you realise you can do a lot with them but now you have to pay attention to the senses that weren't originally the primary choice.
That is how I perceive "heightened" senses.
I hate the use of the phrase "heightened senses." We don't have heightened senses. It's more we train the other senses to compensate for the loss of another. We train the other senses to be more efficient.

My ASL professor who was also Deaf, said that people who are Deaf are much better at noticing things in their peripheral than hearing people. She said that they're the most reliable person when doing an accident or police report because of how much they're able to see and focus their attention on while multitasking. Not saying that this is the expectation for every person who is Deaf, but it makes sense that they're account of something would be more visually reliable.

@@ryanamari2233 that's fine. I'm terrified as a hearing person. Even with having an extra set of skills like better multitasking, you're still operating a dangerous piece of equipment. Also, I also assume there are some nerves with how others drive as well. Some people are complete a**holes and have 0 patience on the road.
yes it is true kinda but I am half deaf who can still hear out of one ear but that means that I do not hear as great as a normal hearing person but with a normal ear kinda true even if I was not half deaf I believe I would still be this way noticing things more than most hearing people would that is just me and my curiosity in me and having ADD does not help with that being deaf because that makes me too notice a lot of things

As a hearing person who drives a manual, can confirm that I rarely shift gears by looking at the rpm gauge. It was helpful for maybe my first 3 to 6 months of learning, but after that it's much quicker and safer to shift based on how much the vehicle vibrates while you drive. Listening to the engine does help, but the only reason I would ever consider listening to the engine is to avoid being too loud when I'm changing gears.
Yea! I had a few manual trucks in the past and am currently converting my benz to a manual. SAVE THE MANUALS!
My husband is deaf (hard of hearing) and he not only drives a regular car but also has his CDL and drives a school bus. He is the safest driver I have ever met and he notices road signs and hazards before most other people do. Thanks for helping to break this stereotype!❤️

I personally think there is a huge misconception about those who are deaf and cannot do certain things. That’s why I find it so fascinating that they don’t enforce deaf culture as a curriculum in education. I didn’t know anything about the deaf culture until my nephew was born. He is 100% deaf in both ears and my in-laws truly grieved about that. It wasn’t until I enrolled in college and took ASL classes and had hands on experience with the deaf culture that I realized there is nothing to grieve about those who are deaf. I’ve had the honor of being taught by different deaf professors who truly made me love the language. I now go to deaf events where I can meet others, and learn more. It’s my personal goal to be a sign language interpreter. I thank you both for putting yourselves out there for the world to see. I learned so much from both of you and the deaf community has truly brought me genuine happiness and knowledge that I couldn’t get from anywhere else. 💙
I’m in high school and I wish there was an ASL class, my grandma knows ASL and I want to learn it cause she told me a story about a deaf man in front of her and this guy was screaming at him all rudely and the deaf man kept trying to tell the guy he was deaf and my grandma stepped in to help, the guy was not listening to the mans signs some people just don’t know or care about ASL, they think not a lot of people are deaf

ummm i dont know what kind of roads they are driving on where your horn is that important lol. I rarely have to use mine, aaaand if an emergency vehicle is approaching you can either see the lights or other cars yielding and do the same.

In my country, Colombia people use the horn as much as they use the brake sadly but yeah I don't think that's enough for them to be rude and say deaf can't drive

Little late, but in Austria it's technically illegal to listen to loud music and it's definitely illegal to use headphones while driving so I just assumed that deaf people have some legal challenges if they want get a license (at least those that can't hear any loud noises like sirens). Like my bf is physically disabled so his license is limited to automatic cars and he technically needs to have a footrest installed but that would probably hinder him more so he ignores the second part. I assumed it was similar for deaf people but I can't find enough info online.

omg that was one of the things that motivated me too! And I just realized during the quaretine that I have a deaf nieghbor. Three houses down from me is a family. The husband and wife are deaf and they have a hearing daughter. They are a really awesome family.

Back when I was an able-bodied youths I actually learned how to drive from my paraplegic uncle. Had a high school teacher who was amazed by this fact and I couldn't ever understand why it was hard to believe.
I have hearing aid on my left side only and I couldn’t even hear it emergency services vehicle but I’ll follow if all the cars pull over on the right side obviously 🙄

Yeah I’m a blue light driver and we are trained that sometimes people who don’t pull over right away could be deaf and we can change the lights to help catch attention.

How do you communicate with air traffic control? Don't you need to be able to hear them talk to you over the radio? Honest question, as I'm not a pilot and don't know what other comm systems are available to pilots.
yes people usually shocked to hear your deaf and still accomplishing goals and doing normal things hearing people can me being half deaf some deaf people can still hear like me just not as good as normal fully hearing people we can do anything we set our minds to and I know being deaf some places will not let us work there I have seen it on tv just means we find somewhere who will or start our own company we can do anything a hearing person can we just do it differently

@@masterjedifunkolobstah4836 in my case, I’m not profoundly deaf, I can hear ATC through my headset better than I can hear a person standing next to me in a store trying to talk to me.
There is a guy at my club who is profoundly deaf, the club used to use a light system for him to clear him for take off and landing, he flew VFR, so he didn’t need to communicate with controllers in the air (he had to avoid restricted/controlled airspace obviously).
The rules got changed and he still flies but he now has to have someone sat beside him to use the radio on his behalf while he flies.

Deaf people can drive!! I have a friend who’s sister is deaf and she drives all the time her best friend also helps her when she’s about to cross a railroad track. Other than that she drives and lives just well

Totally agree about being able to feel the RPMs. I'm hearing, I drive a manual and while I do have a RPM gauge, I never look at it to switch gears. Obviously I also rely on listening to the car telling me when to upshift or downshift but you can also very much feel the car telling you this as well.
Also, hearing people can have a hard time with sirens sometimes. When I hear a siren, I can get confused as to where it is coming from and I find myself thinking, "Wait, is that behind me, to the side, ahead?" and start looking for the lights. I mean, the siren can alert you but you still have to locate it. I've been in cars with people and we'll all be looking around! If you are deaf, I imagine you probably notice at the same time as us if not sooner, like Ryan, what direction the emergency vehicle is coming from.
Not to mention we also see other people pulling over. Visual cues is what most people use, hearing or not, to drive
I am deaf and I drive a jeep and I go off-roading a lot and also I ride a motorcycle too.... and also I am a forklift operator for Beer company name Millers. I can do anything except HEAR.

I LOVE THIS!!! As a driving instructor in NJ I have actually been asked questions like this before so as a way to better educate myself I looked into it as well. I have had students that were partially deaf, blind in one eye, a little person & all kinds of special needs like Asperger's Syndrome and so on. People that are paraplegic can even drive too with hand controls, such an interesting world we live in and so diverse! Thank you for sharing your experience, strength and hope for all with your life stories!
I'm HOH and I drive. I have a few friends at different levels of deafness and they drive. I never gave that a thought. I've known a couple of people blind in one eye and they drive. I've heard of people who use a wheelchair and drive. there are different levels of abilities who are perfectly able to drive or do anything else. you two are great.
FUN FACT: So my Deaf sign language teacher (in England), told me years and years ago she used to have a device on the dash board that would flash when it picked up noises of sirens BUT she and most of her Deaf friends stopped using them here as burglars would looks for these devices people's cars and then realise they are deaf and break into their homes at night.
I've had people ask me this question before and I'm like yeah of course Deaf people have eyes and I read an artical once and statistics show Deaf people have less accidents than hearing people so technically Deaf people better drivers 👍🤟

I'm nearly completely deaf in my left ear and HoH/going to lose hearing in my right ear and honestly its so much easier to learn ASL through just watching people sign in every day life than teaching myself on my own with instructional videos. You guys have great content. I love watching these. It's educational for me especially because I'm Dutch too. The language barrier Dutch-Englisch and ASL make this a great learning experience for me. I'm actually trying to watch it without subtitles too to figure out if I can understand what Ryan is trying to say. And I'm suprised how much I can understand watching his face expressions, moving lips and hand gestures. Thank you guys!

I more and more admire you! This video was so funny and interesting! I guess we all can only learn from you, in so many different ways. Thank you for making even two parts!!
I've got my own drivers licence only a few months ago and to be honest, I don't trust my hearing senses too much. I've even switched off the car radio, just in case a song or news on it, could bring me up from the actual driving. And most accidents happen because one doesn't SEE someone/something, or because the distance two drivers kept from each other was too small, or someone drove too fast, too slow. Nothing of this has to do with hearing!!
I really appreciate you guys how you make videos on Ryan because he’s deaf and I’m happy you aren’t shy or embarrassed because this would mean a lot to you guys so. I also think there should be world wide day called”Worlds Deaf Day” and it should be about respecting a to recognise people who are deaf, and this day would make a lot of people including deaf people very happy like I honestly think that those who are being mean to people that are deaf, like that’s just cruel and annoying I’ve actually experienced this because my girlfriend is deaf and has been born deaf just like Ryan

Im indonesian, my sister is deaf and i can sign, actually i can understand what ryan was saying because the alphabet and some words sign are same especially the alphabet sign, in indonesia there are 2 different signs system, the same one with ASL is called SIBI but it's unofficial because a lot of deaf and hearing people always misunderstand when they are signed, so we change to the new system called BISINDO, but in some school they still teach SIBI sign system instead of BISINDO. I can sign them both, i still learn english and not only the english language but the ASL too.

Are people really that ignorant?! Driving is based like 95% on what you see. 🤣 I guarantee the same people who asked how Ryan can drive if he's deaf are the same people that drive around blasting music at full volume and therefore don't hear much of anything outside their own car either. I'm hearing and if I have the windows up and the radio on I often dont hear sirens until they're pretty close anyway. 🤷🏻♂️

@@zenplus6515 Actually it is a legitimate question. There are laws that specifically say you can't have your radio too loud (although many people break this law). There are laws saying you cannot wear headphones or earbuds while driving. The laws clearly hint that most people must be able to hear and see while driving. Therefore the question is definitely legit (though many people worded it very poorly).
The problem is people don't understand the heightened visual sense. He is deaf always, so his sense of vision is heightened. With long enough practice he can drive with sight alone with little to no more difficulty than everyone else. To everyone else who isn't, they don't have a heightened visual sense while listen to music. Plus the music is an additional auditory distraction.
@@antmess9789 It's the distraction that's the problem, not hearing. Honking horns are more distracting than useful on the road. That's all the listening one could argue is necessary. Ppl need to research, reason and empathize and stop putting the burden of education on others.
i find it really interesting to watch videos like these because my mom and I are both losing our hearing and it helps me know that it won't be that bad, I'll learn and grow with it.

Even it looks funny as it seems (like a troll question), they answered it perfectly by giving clear definition on blind and deaf. Assuming that person mixed up or genuinely do not know the difference. Kudos to them! Education channel indeed without prejudice

It never occurred to me that being deaf would effect driving. Even after reading so many peoples opinions, mine hasn't changed. I have learned so much from you guys, including the majority of sign language. Thank you so much and continue whatever you are doing.

I only just found you two today, you popped up in my suggestions somehow interestingly enough. Very cool what you’re doing and I’m finding your videos both interesting and inspiring. I haven’t taken an ASL course before, but a lot of the hand gestures made sense to me. My mom tried teaching me the ASL alphabet when I was in middle school but that was a long time ago. I remembered it then but it’s extremely foggy. Now I want to try out that ASL course in Skillshare since I got that subscription a couple weeks ago. You three are great, your pup is so sweet too!
I noticed your dog reacting to that sirene which made me wonder: do you see him in your mirror? If so, can he help you to notice things earlier than you would when he wasn't there?
well the dog is deaf too, and I'm not speaking for them but I think they'd rather rely on themselves than a dog who has no idea what's happening.
This seems like an odd question to me... i mean if hearing was so so important while driving then why would radios be allowed in cars. Some people listen to their music so loud while driving that you can hear it crystal clear while sitting in your own car.

the vibration part is so cool. if anything, knowing you could potentially not hear something just makes you a safer driver- we probably take our hearing for granted in an unsafe way
Those kinds of comments seem really rude to me, but the fact that you guys pretty much took them seriously and answered them really speaks to the kind of people you are: humble, kind, and genuine.
Where these people comes up with these dumb question? Driving is all about visual.

I know he can drive the same as a hearing person, but does that count when he is talking with Ellen? He has to look away from the road a lot in order to follow a conversation, as well as take his hand away from the wheel, is that more dangerous for them to be talking?
