Some people might say that your signing is a bit slow compared to some people, but I actually love the pace that you go because it’s super helpful to someone who’s learning to be able to see natural conversation at an easier to understand pace!
I agree, I see some people sign SO SO quickly and I haven't a chance in hell of following anything. Not their fault of course, but I do love how he signs.

Same! I'm still learning, so I'm bound to be slow, but even speaking I'm a slow talker because I do a lot of thinking while talking. (Plus I have a block stutter) But it's nice to know not all ASL users are hyper speed signers. Lol

I am loving this channel! My boyfriend is deaf and I've gotten a lot of....unwelcomed opinions on the matter. What would I want to date someone who can't hear? Why put myself through that...blah, blah, blah. I mean, seriously, just because he can't hear, that doesn't make him any less of a person. Im hard of hearing and i am married to my husband who’s hearing and we both have our daughter whose also hearing. Thankfully, his family welcomed me and accepted me for who i am. Give them time and support your man. Also, i made a video about that on my channel. It would explain a little more in depth. Hope you can stop by. ❤️

I am HH and even I am a little different around the hearing world. There’s definitely some differences.
I’m just glad my husband is willing to continue to try and learn ASL. Today he actually signed a whole sentence in ASL whilst I was in the bath and without my hearing aid! Lol So proud of him!

lol I know ASL (I'm hearing) and I do that all the time. I'd be eating an apple, my former student would ask me a question and I'd end up holding the apple in my mouth to sign back. They would always laugh

Your videos are so delightful. I love that they aren't scripted. I love that you keep discussing through ideas and concepts and you let us see that process.
I’m so excited that I can now start to follow without subtitles most part (in the browser I can only see subtitles in the small viewer, not full screen) if I watch at 75% speed, and I only have to back up to catch up on some finger spelling or if I got distracted by java. Sometimes I don’t know a sign, but I’m trying to figure it out from context, and it’s nice that you both tend to repeat the important words. I can even usually keep up while you have a brief moment of signing over each other.
For reference I just finished the ASL 101 videos from Dr. Byron Bridges, in addition to watching a lot of Bill Vicars’s stuff, some signed with heart and our signed world, but mostly you two for practice! This is the first time I have put up with not having sub titles in order to enjoy the full screen view, and I’m so glad I tried it. I usually can’t stand 75% speed, but it’s so worth it for 150% learning value.
I've learned ASL thru my whole life &it just so happens, my fiance is "half deaf," or almost completely deaf in one ear. He's always wanted to learn ASL/PSE, so I've taught him the phrased I know to get thru a conversation, &I'm thinking of enrolling back in school to get credentials to become an interpreter.
Your videos inspire us as well, because his first language is German, and he is tri-lingual (German, French, English; he's Canadian, so he learned French &English in school) so me being primarily English speaking, we have had major barriers in communication (he has to translate in his head to "say things right") but learning ASL has bridged that gap a bit for us ❤ we sign PSE for understanding purposes, but want to learn ASL more for broader purposes! Thank you Ellen and Ryan!!

Im learning so much from you about being in a relationship and have always been drawn to signing..I had a SERIOUS aha..revelation too as Ryan was talking at the end about my personal situation. I grew up with a family that snubbed and treated me different then my syblings as a way to control and keep me down. I am very different to them which made them envy or hate on me..for years I had to be silent as I couldnt be myself but then it was really difficult to let my personality out and come through 'outside'..Now I am building those positive experiences and you guys helped me understand so clearly that I am not 2 faced..oh Java too!!!So I feel like I found two great friends...with no barriers. Watching your channel has been helping me a lot with my sign. It’s been about 10 years since I’ve signed and it kills me to be lacking in a language I loved. We don’t have much of a deaf community at the base we’re at so it’s soooo helpful to have you guys!

I love watching these kinda videos. I lost my hearing at 22 years old & nearly 6 years ago now and it is a big change. I use hearing aids but still limited what I can hear and understand without lipreading. I actually started self teaching asl (I'm from London,uk) before my hearing went but then when it went I taught my best friend some signs and we can have a convo in all which is helpful. There is defo a change in body language when signing to talk ... I for sure can feel a difference in myself and my own body language.
I'm now about to study to become an audiologist hehe....

i love this channel so much and your relationship! i can see that you both have soo much love for each other and have great communication skills. your videos have educated me so much and i want to begin learning ASL. i am a very empathetic person, if it helps i am an INFJ personality type. i am very much in my head snd introverted yet care for humans so much and am very understanding. i am an empath and very kind hearted and always want to make people feel welcome, so i’m so glad that i have learned from this channel some things not to do around someone who is deaf and things that are okay to do.
i think the one thing that i perhaps ignorantly was shocked by when first coming upon this channel, was that when ryan signs, he is mouthing exactly what he is saying so perfectly that i am able to read his lips. it shocked me that he was able to mouth words so perfectly without completely knowing the sound of the words or how to say them out loud, i found that very very interesting and beyond impressive!!!! but i think now i have more understanding on how he can do that 🥺☺️. i hope someday i can sign well!!!

Hey! I recently stumbled upon your channel - great content! We need more creators like you to help bridge gaps during such a divided social climate! My wife is Russian speaking, and I can relate when we visit her family in Belarus! I’m still learning Russian and I can feel myself exaggerate my facial expressions and body language when I’m communicating with them, only because I don’t have the vocabulary to say what I want. I don’t feel my personality has changed, I am simply at a loss for words. Hope that improves soon!

This is a really great video. Things as a hearing person, would never think of. The over exaggeration you have to do in order for us to get your tone. So interesting! I do wish that hearing people would give you more of a chance and engage in conversation when you try to. We sure could learn a lot.

Also, I wanted to make a comment about your discussion. I assure you that your personality remains the same whether you're with hearing or Deaf. But, naturally, through adaptation, you will change some of your expressions, some of your styles and even your vocabulary. But remember that is a human nature thing...I absolutely love how supportive you both are of each other! I am learning so much...

This channel has been super helpful for me in terms of seeing the language being used in a chill conversational environment. I’m always too scared to use my ASL skills despite having learned for the past 10 years because I’ve had some not great experiences (mostly with hearing people saying I’m not doing it right, but deaf people keep encouraging me)
I’m working towards being comfortable in my language abilities, but every time I have a deaf customer I always use my skills to help in any way I can!!

Blue Universe Some people don’t hear a monologue in their head. An article came out about if not too long ago about it. It’s strange to me because I also hear my voice in my head haha

Im a hearing person and i dont think with a loud voice in my head. Imagine that you have an idea first that is without words im the beginning, and then afterwards you intentionally add in your own voice in your thoughts. I just never add in my voice in my thoughts. This way is more peaceful actually. I dont know if you understood that. But just think that there is a split second in your mind that are silent when you get an idea, and after that silent second you start to add the voice intentionally. Hope you understand my explanation, it's hard to explain

Ryan, do you feel like you have difficulty understanding individuals who are stoic and do not use much body language?
Holy crap. I have a problem with people like that. I rely on face expressions, body language, and lip reading to figure out what someone is saying. But when they are not expressive in any way, it is hard to read them. I currently have a guy in my class who sits real still, and then when he talks, he's not even moving his teeth/jaw and he barely moves his lips. He came up to talk to me for a group project we were doing and I barely understand a word he said. But before that, a girl walked into class and through her face expression, body language, and normal movement of her mouth, I knew exactly what she said when she came in which was funny (she saw we were getting into groups and said, "I don't want to be here") lol
Thanks to you both for doing these videos! I have been hard of hearing all my life but recently I've lost almost all of my hearing. I'm currently taking ASL classes from a deaf teacher because my ability to communicate is becoming more difficult. I just discovered your channel and it's fascinating for me and very helpful in my learning process. I also like the contrasts you both present for hearing and deaf culture perspectives.
Love you both!! Ryan, when you mouth words, I can lipread and understand you perfectly, even though I am a hearing person. I can read and understand your lips much better and faster than your sign. Also, I appreciate it so much that, for both of you, your words match your signs.

If you are interested you can slow their videos down. I use that feature to be sure that I'm catching every sign. It has been super helpful!! And I agree that both Ryan & Ellen sign at the perfect pace for those of us that are learning.

I'm very new to your channel and I absolutely love it. I'm hard of hearing and use hearing aids which help tremendously but they aren't always dependable. I relate 100% to how Ryan was saying he sometimes just stays quiet. When I'm in large groups I do the exact same thing. There's too much noise and talking for me to always follow along in conversation so I usually just end up staying in my own bubble in my head because after a while it's all white noise and I get lost therefore I can't contribute to the conversations. I've spent most of my life with people that don't know me assuming I'm a...well... B because I can't hear them talk to me from behind so I don't answer or I do sit quietly in group settings for the reason mentioned above. For me, being hard of hearing, people never assume that I struggle to hear especially when my speech is intact. They don't believe me when I tell them I have hearing aids, I always have to show people to prove it and even then they will forget. The partial hearing group can be really difficult because you don't fully fit into either group and that has always been and continues to be a personal internal struggle for me.
Anyways, I just wanted to share that and let you guys know I enjoy your insight and appreciate you letting us all into your world. Keeping being you because you guys are amazing!
Most of the times when I watch your videos, I think you guys are inspiring in terms of understanding one another. Eventhough you have distinct perspectives over something, both of you are capable of hearing each other's explanation till it's done, and meeting at an agreement point, where at the end none of you will feel less mutual.

I was wondering, are there filler words ? Like "Uhm" , "well.." , "like" , "so" ?? Also, can you stutter when using sign language?
ninni with ASL there are some words that don’t have signs like , “are” there is a sign for “are” but it’s raaarely used , it’s more of the “informal asl” and yes it is very possible to stutter , i stutter all the time when i sign

My first thought about the idea that he is more exaggerated work hearing people is that it's like when you speak to a child or someone who doesn't speak your language well, you exaggerate certain words or gestures to help communicate the parts that are lost from a lack of shared language.
When Ryan said the number one thing from ASL class is facial expressions, that's what I took away most when I first learned ASL. Ever since I was taught sign (took it for 4 years in high school, became fluent and have many deaf friends), I've been extra expressive in my life. Throughout college, my professors would always tell me that they knew when I did or didn't understand material because it was so clearly on my face.

this is a great ? and you 2 answered it beautifully together. my daughter was non-verbal for 3 years so I learned SOME sign language and took classes 3x at the local deaf and blind school. the DEAF teachers I had were not able to hear us so they wrote on the chalkboard to "talk" otherwise they just taught us finger spell and then signs.. What I found interesting about your video is you said you can tell a person is new to sign when they are extra expressive and in class we were GRADED on this. they said there is a square from your face to your hand and you need to keep your hand up and keep your expression big. we all felt like fools over doing what a semi truck was or the sign for strong, I thought all deaf people were super expressive due to this class but maybe it was the teachers way of helping us break our hearing barrier to learn those expressions and in time they would fade more.
