I work as a cashier and I greeted this one customer and she didn’t answer so I signed to her and her face lit up and she was so excited that I was able to communicate with her. It’s moments like that that make me love to learn asl. I also appreciate how slow you guys sign. Very easy to understand. I have troubles interpreting signs not signing so your vids help out so much!

One of my favorite sounds was hearing my deaf grandfather laugh. It was so unfiltered and real it always made me want to laugh too and just felt good. Also one of the funniest damn things was watching him argue with my grandmother and get in the last word by turning around and not looking at her and she would get SO PISSED but eventually you would hear them laughing .. good times... @@allthatsokay yeah. Most ppl who are hearing but learn ASL/other sign language for someone they love are like this. Most sign languages emphasize the use of non verbal communication and facial expressions and also when Ellen signs and speaks at the same time she is literally speaking two different languages w different word order and grammar, and unique ways to communicate in each language and doing both is hard unless you are a professional simultaneous interpreter. It's a hard task between any two languages that are very different - e.g Chinese and English, Hungarian and Portuguese or Navajo and French. (these are actual examples of languages spoken by ppl I've seen simultaneously interpret.) there's a reason sign language interpreters in most countries need a formal education.

@@saywhatsam9655 as a hearing person who uses ASL (not super fluent), it's a natural part of the language. facial expressions and mouth shapes change the meanings of certain signs, and mouthing helps make your meaning more clear. the noise is basically just a byproduct of that. if you sign with deaf people daily, it's more than likely that you'll just start doing it naturally. It doesn't seem forced from my experience with hearing people fluent in ASL

I personally prefer when Ellen voices the conversation. For me, its due to a combination of learning styles that prioritize how I am able to take in information. Text almost always wins my focus, esp when there is no voice, so I never see the signs because I'm drawn to the CC --which does nothing to help me understand asl. When Ellen uses her voice I can connect the words with the signs that I'm seeing because there's something about vocalizing that pulls me out of that "Text will tell me everything I need" sort of mentality and I can actually see them again. Now, this is just me as a hearing person saying what works for me in terms of wanting to learn the language. That does not mean that anyone needs to accomodate my preferances--You guys aren't instructors, you don't need to change for anyone. I'm here to see what you've got, not demand that you give me what I want. Do what works best for you :)

Yeah, facial expressions and other inflections represent the tone of voice in spoken languages. It was probably weird at first, but you adapt over time. (at least that's what I assume would happen)

@@SignDuoChannel this has me curious as to how me as someone with ASD would communicate as I can't read facial expressions, body language tone etc... I tried learning to sign Auslan before my diagnosis but it was an epic failure because the teacher would be signing really loudly and I'd be fixed facial expression not understanding like 😐

@@DustyGloo As someone who also has ASD that is currently trying to learn ASL, I gotta say that the facial expressions are by far the hardest part for me. And while they tend to make a *bit* more sense when I see other people doing them as I've spent a LOT of time trying to learn more about mannerisms, I realize that I don't do any facial expressions at all when signing and it makes me feel like I'm only speaking half the language, haha.

When you use your voice it’s like watching a movie that is spoken in your language. When you only sign but don’t use my language of choice I only read and miss both of your facial expressions. I think it’s about the effort it takes to communicate with each other in their language of choice or need. My blind friends have to turn on their audible reader to hear because they can’t see you signing. I appreciate when you use your voice because I can taken in more of the experience with multiple forms of communication. My friends who are unsighted ask me questions and I have to say I’ll have to go back because I missed it. The gift of communication is that we can reach people in many ways and it bridges our gaps of understanding so we can have our lives enriched by the experience of others lives.
Thank you both for sharing your experience in audio / visual, it is wonderful!

Ryan's voice: do I "need" to hear it? No. Ryan is *very* expressive with his face and has a quick and ready smile. Wish I knew him in real life. Seems like a great guy. Am I a little curious about his voice? Sure. Would love to hear if he's a bass or a soprano. And I'm a little curious if even 1/10 the emotion comes out with the voice as I see in his face. He said he talked more with Ellen when he got excited about things, so I think there *would* be some expressivity in his voice as well as his face.
Ellen's voice or both using sign instead of talking also: I'm OK with it, but I definitely have to work harder trying to pay very close attention to their faces, and body movements, and signs, and... it's a little bit overwhelming and I really have to work. I'm used to just listening to other people's inflections, and as a teacher, I use a LOT of tone and inflection when I teach. The interpreters at our school have shared with me that they use more body language and facial expression with the kids to also communicate more than what's being said.

I used to like learning when Ellen signed and talked at the same time and then I would test myself when Ryan would sign because I had to depend on the signs and try to understand. But right now for context, I’m solely depending on captions now. But I love you guys and do what makes you both comfortable!
