Unfortunately, there are businesses out there that don't train their employees properly on accessibility and communication. As Ryan said, that was a degrading experience, but you can't let it make you sad; you have to stay strong. If you face discrimination because of who you are, stay strong. Hopefully we can highlight how businesses should communicate with their customers, and encourage businesses to become more inclusive.
Have you experienced discrimination from a business? Share your story with everyone in the comments down below.

Hey everyone, I want to thank you all so much for the support. However, please refrain from *any unkind comments* towards the employees. This was not our intention. Our only intention of this video was meant to educate and spread a message of how deaf people might order if they enter your drive through so anyone can be prepared. Thank you all ❤️

It was nice of him to go back and redo the order, which could of gotten him in trouble. Honestly some people just need to take time to think about how others look at them. So what if they were faking, which they weren’t but, is it really going to make it any better by being a jerk. I don’t think it happens very often anyway, someone faking.

Always wanted them to be trained a little better on services and have things closed captions. We all have feelings just like the rest. I never used my hearing loss to gain or benefit better than anyone. I just want to be treated equally. Just tired of being treated like we have a contagious disease.

I was a customer service rep at a bank when a woman who was deaf came in to open an account. This was my first encounter with someone who was unable to hear. She had written on a piece of paper what she wanted, and handed it to me. I welcomed her to sit down as I started the account opening process. This was back in the late 90’s when everything was still mostly paper. I had no issue. I pulled out a stickie pad, and began asking questions. At the end of the encounter, we were both laughing at the number of stickies that were all over my desk. What s lovely person. It was memorable, because it was challenging but fun and we were both committed to finding a way to communicate, despite my awkward hand signals.
It infuriates me that when people realize deaf people can’t hear, they try to talk louder.
I think they just try to exaggerate so it’s easier to lip read but it just comes off as condescending

Real representation of unintelligent individuals and they represent all McDonald’s employees... wether or not some McDonald’s employees are smart they still represent the whole due to viral videos.
So cool to see a deaf person showing the reality of many people who live on a daily basis.
I'm deaf, I also want to add one more thing he said. It's true, we're used to it. Since we were children, we have lived in this type of situation, when I was little, I was very sad and felt lonely. But after a while, I started to realize that if I got sad because of people, I wouldn't live for the rest of my life. It's exactly like he said, if you feel sad because of people who treat you that way, you won't be happy. For this reason, I don't like interacting with hearing people because I always feel lonely. I love the deaf community, I feel happier 😊❤ Thanks to the deaf and sign language community, I don't feel down.
I used to work fast food there was always a regular deaf guy and he was always so nice, i always treated him with respect and patience and his smile is so rewarding
“He’s faking it” please tell me what would someone gain from pretending to be deaf in the drive thru? That makes no sense at all. Irritated tf out of me.
Ignorance
If anything it would be a major inconvenience to pretend to be deaf.......people are so dumb.
The other day in my ASL class we learned about why people fake deafness. Sometimes they want to be a part of the Deaf community and other times they just pretend to be deaf to gain attention or sympathy.
It really sucks that these people thought that Ryan was faking his deafness even though they saw him sighting and exactly like you said, there is nothing to gain by pretending to be deaf in a drive through.

this was an eye opener for me. i was ignorant and uneducated but at least i would've treated them the same as any other customer
When I worked at Sonic, I remember a deaf couple coming and I took their order on paper, and while their food was being made I looked up how to sign "Have a nice day". When I did it for them after bringing them their food, their smiles were better than any tip I made the entire time I worked there.
That's nice 😊
Thats friggin cool XDDDD.
I love you for that bro
Thank you for being a kind-hearted person :)
Aww that's so wholesome
"He's faking it"
That was so disrespectful. If they had a disability, whether is be big or small, would the person saying that want others to think he's faking it?
Gabriela Soltero
Honestly with the amount of people who mess with the drive thru employees and they usually hate their job.
And the probability of them ever encountering a deaf customer their entire time working there would be 0-1 their entire time there unless they have a regular one there.
So it’s no surprise they would assume that he would be faking it since I think it was the guy who came it when he’s just asking him to write it down. And remember they don’t know sign language so all the guy sees is him giving him a sign to write it down. And the girls saying he can’t hear you.
I’ve seen a video of a kid pretending to be deaf it got so many dislikes I think he deleted the video couple years ago and he gave them a paper to read and they took the order no questions asked and wrote back the amount.
But the second drive thru they went to they were saying he was faking it and he started laughing then he just sped out of the drive thru...
They did not have any other people in line either if it was empty so idk why the girl didn’t just write down the order it was there written down.
VelvetMidnight Fast food employees doesn’t get paid enough to deal with the bullshit some people bring
@@velvetmidnight9535 just because someone fakes a disability (whichis illegal), doesn't give anyone a right to assume all disabilities are fake. It's like if a white guy stole from a store; would it be morally correct for the owner of said store to be rude to all white guys because of it? No. Just because there are fake service dogs out there, does it give a right to businesses to refuse service to a disabeld person with a service dog? Federally, no. Because faking a disability, as well as faking a service dog is as illegal as impersonating a law enforcement officer.
And if they hate their job, they need to get a new one instead of taking it out on customers, especially disabled customers. There is no excuse for insulting someone apart from the person who is doing it is a disgusting person who should not be working with people in general.

It's not the brand it's those people.
Dont be close minded
William Brewer it is the brand McDonald’s have the most overrated and sucky place so they get everyone they could get
William Brewer the brand holds the standards of who they hire. Along with this they hire people to reflect what their company is. That’s why some companies have many incidents of situations like this happening and others have little to none.

We are on work and have got shit to do and places to be, those burgers don't be gonna flipping by themselves" sth like this, I can see why they're mad...
When my granddaughter was 16, she worked for Brahms Ice Cream Store in the drive through. A deaf person would come through and write down their order. My granddaughter wanted so desperately to talk to this person so she took it upon herself to learn just enough ASL to communicate with the person who frequented the store. On the day the person returned, my granddaughter spoke in ASL and the person was so excited they cried.
Later, my granddaughter received a raise and promotion because the person wrote management and told of the effort she had put in to communicate with them.
I was so proud of her!
Even i'm proud of her!
@@ramirodelagarma6884 Me, too! And I'm in Serbia :)

Awww. So touching.
When he said “he’s probably faking it” that literally pissed me off.
It’s reasonable to suspect that though. He’s probably thinking it’s either a prank otherwise he could just come inside to order. Drive thru pranks are super common, I probably would’ve been suspicious as well.
@@misters1r900 But that kind of "prank" isn't malicious or anything. Like, how would that waste their time or whatever? You know? They wasted their own damn time throwing the food away. I'm surprised McDonalds doesn't have some training with this. Do they really think deaf people don't want the convenience of a drive through?

Your videos are very enlightening and informative. I'm sorry that you guys deal with these situations so often, but posting these is definitely a great way to promote understanding and kindness. My love and support to you both.
I'm currently trying to learn ASL, specifically words and phrases related to retail, so I can help my customers better. In over a decade, I've only had one deaf customer (that I'm aware of), but I think about her all the time. She and her dad were the sweetest people, and taught me the signs for "Thank you" and "You're welcome". The way her face lit up when I spoke to her directly and then used the signs they taught me was something I will never forget. It just goes to show that you don't need to know ASL to have a good interaction and help people out - some kindness and understanding will do in a pinch.
Bless you both! ( sorry and doggie! )
This just popped into my feed.
So sad that people cannot be accommodating, the customer is always right!
"Why won't you just go inside to order?"
Well, exactly why people invented drive thrus. So they people can just "drive through".
Exactly. Refusing service on the basis of a disability or asking them to use a different service because it is more convenient for the restaurant is discrimination and can lead to way more trouble for a business than the "inconvenience" of helping them.
@@buckeyehockey1979 yep, if I was deaf and that happened, that would be an easy lawsuit
@@flaymix1 actually no. You have to give the company a chance to fix the issue 1st. You have any idea how many frivolous lawsuits would be jamming the system if the 1st option was lawsuit?
@@mikemarek6243 actually, I said that because people do that and think that way. I wasn’t implying I’d do it at all. Many people do jump straight to lawsuit, but never commit
They should have the monitors where you just select your order in drive through (like the ones inside) instead of talking to a person.
Literally all they had to do was take his order by reading his phone.

@@camtwan1 Then turn it to the brightest screen to the max should litterally be enough to be readable, unless he has a crappy phone that is like the gameboy's screens from the 1999.
KeBin lol u completely misread his statement but ok
Why not just go inside? They can give you more time and slow it down for you.(Unlike the drive thru which is made for a fast convenience) They had plenty of time to sit outside, I'm sure it would have been easier to order it like eVeRyBoDy eLse. Dramatized for views. GJ
Oh my goodness, that was awful customer service by any standard one cares to judge it. Thank goodness for the nice guy who did his best - I think that is encouraging, because it shows that even when some people aren't as helpful as they could be, others can still do their best to do the best they can for you. I haven't watched the 1 year later video, but I hope that the experience of this one encouraged everyone there to be more accomodating of disabilities than they had been.

Oh wow, that was eye opening... so sorry you experience that on a regular basis. That would be so frustrating!!! Thanks for sharing, even though I imagine it was a terrible experience. It was shocking to see.
The fact that people think he’s “faking” it just shows how ignorant people are in this world. So disappointing. 😔
Bryan Flores 😔😞
There's a lot of people in world who like to joke around. But should always take serious until proven I work at Walmart I had deaf and blind come and helped them was kind of cool
@@esprockstsjh Most people who fake it tend to not be educated on sign and how to communicate as a deaf person. If they are educated, they know it's insensitive to fake because that makes real deaf people be taken less seriously.
They have cameras all over the car I would say the same thing tbh
@@metro2savagetv756 That's dumb as hell. They're recording this to show exactly _why_ saying he's faking it is hurtful. That's the entire point of this video. If you'd say the same, you need to get educated on the deaf community.
bruh, why did they keep speaking to him as if HE DIDN'T JUST CLARIFY THAT HE WAS DEAF? some people man...
ikr
I mean I get that it’s habit to speak to people but after like the second or third time that he just isn’t understanding you would think that they would stop trying to speak to him
I think people assume most deaf people can lip read.

It’s like a comfort thing I did it when I was making freinds as a kid to people who spoke different languages it’s something there use to so they don’t know how to react when they can’t do what they normally do

This video truly made me start to cry. I wish people could have more respect and compassion for others. Everyone should be treated with dignity. I'm sad and angry that you weren't.
I'm surprised how good subtitles are with ASL! Grew up with em which helps with the whole looking in 2 places issue people have. I actually found it easier to follow along than when people both talk and sign. First video in and I love it so far
him: i'm deaf

Prank or not JUST SERVE THE FRIGGIN FOOD. Not that hard.
Yes whether or not you believe someone, it’s not that hard to read it and give him the drink, it’s like if you go to a hospital and say you had a seizure and the doctor just says you’re faking and decides to not help you.
Even if it's a prank the store still makes money on the order, so they honestly should be fired or written up for that because they're actively discouraging a customer, prank or no prank, from giving their store money.

Indeed. I have disabilities, like learning disabilities. Just stumbled upon this video, thanks for drawing attention to it. Looking into ASL lessons now. Human connection is so important.
“I’ll get you a better burger” she’s too kind
Yeah but at the same time, YOU JUST BOUGHT FOOD RIGHT?!?!? SO WHY ARE YOU ACTING LIKE BUYING A CONSUMER PRODUCT DOESN'T MATTER AND THAT MONEY DOESN'T EITHER! EAT THE FAMN FOOD FOR GODS SAKE! AND PLEASE DON'T WASTE SOMETHING YOU JUST BOUGHT! I just don't really see a point in doing this stuff including the part where she said that this is for the viewers, if it's really for the viewers then you need to go to the full extent and have other people understand that deaf people might have to go through this stuff. Us the viewers need to feel how hard it really is to live this type of way even if it is the small things in life like a hamburger. But yeah just an interesting video in all.
Mr. spicy ice of you watched the video, he ordered two but only got one, he wasn’t going to waste the burger, she was simply saying she’d get him a better one instead of dealing with trying to get the one they forgot to give him. He literally ate the burger. Why are you so hostile?
Mr. spicy ice I’m not trying to argue because you seem angry about something. Hope you have a great night.
Mr. spicy ice yeah, definitely, though they’re burdening themselves by spending their precious time to make a video for them. It’s the viewers that shouldn’t make them do this burdensome task. Although we may now understand the circumstances, it’s still hits me in the back of the head in which if I were the viewer who asked that, I’d genuinely feel terrible for putting them through this.
