  • $2 for 5 PCBs Any Color jlcpcb.com In this video we will take a look at the OBD2 Nitro Performance Chip Tuning Box. Unfortunately a lot of people are naive enough to think a $3 gadget could improve the performance of their vehicle or save them fuel. The reality is the gadget is a scam and won’t change the way your car runs.

    Big Clive did this, then EEVblog Dave did it too. But Florin, you are the only one who actually explained decently how re-mapping or "tricking" the ECU for performance actually works, and how both just simply CAN NOT BE done by plugging a dongle into the ODB2 port . Proving that one particular brand of "performance dongle" is a scam IS NOT enough. Stressing that this simply can not be done with a dongle in any way from the ODB2 port is the way to go. Well done my friend!

    I tried the yellow one, it adjusts how fast you engine shift gears, very noticeable, but doesn't really improve Horsepower or torque. and your pedal is all messed up, a half way pedal push is a full redline rev... it does shift faster tho, it doesn't have the old half-second delay before it does anything at all before tuning

    Its seems that 8 pins controller on board was a tiny arduino and program only to blink all those LED to make look doing something in your ecu.
    There must some sort of memory to store map program. But its none... and no wire connection to obd2 pins that might disturb ecu or make it worst.

    Just a minor point concerning termination: the resistor couldn't possibly be on the PCB, because then you would have an un-terminated bus any time this device _wasn't_ plugged in; at any rate, it would only be needed if the OBD plug would sit at one _end_ of the CAN network (which is not necessarily true), and in that case, it would have to be permanently mounted into the dash socket - the loose end of the bus wiring would need it whether or not something is actually plugged in there... and yes, of course these are snake oil... :)

    • @111chicane
      @111chicane 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On some cars, very few though, the OBD2 connector has a protective cover with built-in 120 Ohm resistors. But in general you're correct. No termination resistors are needed in devices to be plugged in the OBD2 port.

    At first I thought this wouldn't be interesting as I had already watched BigClive's video on these. But I decided to watch it anyway as I've got my car tuned few years ago in a small shop dedicated to my car brand for decades. At that time I had not yet started with my electronics hobby so I wasn't that interested in the what and how. Now I know much more and surely it was interesting. Thank you!
    And in case someone is curious, yes it did have a significant improvement on the car's performance. The tuning kit was BSR Stage 1 to a Saab 9-3 2.0t. According to their specs it should be a change from 175HP to 220HP. I am not the right person to evaluate if the improvement was that big but it didn't require imagination to spot the difference. :)

    • @voltlog
      @voltlog  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No doubt professional tuners know what they're doing and will deliver the results. But one shouldn't expect to replace hundreds of euros paid to a professional tuner with a $3 gadget. I'm amazed how many of these get sold on aliexpress and ebay.

    • @austinsharpley1733
      @austinsharpley1733 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s the efficiency of the tune that gives you the ‘fuel saving’ because technically you should be using less throttle now it’s more powerful but you are right really. No one is saving fuel, every one is stamping on the gas and wearing out their engines

    • @eyurtese
      @eyurtese 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@austinsharpley1733 Tuning for power will not increase efficiency. There is a sweet spot for efficiency like everything in life :)

    CAN bus termination resistor is not allowed in anything that plugs into the obd port. The system has to have two under almost all circumstances, and they're found at opposite ends of the bus; usually one in the ECM and one in the antilock brake controller. Adding a third is a violation of the spec and would likely cause sporadic communication problems.

    What this does is to do the “Passive” ECU reset that is currently included in every modern car.
    I’ll tell you why you don’t need this tool. It’s very simple.
    It works like this:
    You simply turn the ignition ON (without starting the engine).
    Hold the gas pedal all the way in for more than 5 seconds. Preferably 30 seconds.
    Without depressing the gas pedal, turn the ignition Off.
    Let the gas pedal go.
    Wait about 1 min.
    Start the engine.
    This will reset the user learning habits of the ECU.
    In conclusion, yes this device is a scam, what this device does is just to activate a simple code via OBD which is “Holding the Gas pedal sensor all the way in”.
    So that when you turn the car on you Kinda feel a difference. Yes it is noticeable for those that owned a car for at least few years and have never perform an ECU learning habit reset.
    And that’s why the PCB in this device is so simple and useless.

    • @e92e36
      @e92e36 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      interesting, so what you’re saying is the device simply keeps the ecu in hard reset mode? If I do the Ecu reset procedure you mentioned every morning before starting my car, I’m basically imitating what this device does? I have been doing the ecu reset every morning and still want a bit more power / better throttle response, but I couldn’t see the point of spending hundreds on a tune when I could buy a chip like this.

    • @exklimexklim
      @exklimexklim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@e92e36 first you must understand how ECU works.
      If your vehicle is not a performance or sports car you won’t gain that extra push you’re looking for easily.
      City vehicles are meant for Gas Savings and low emission regulations stabilized by your region, so ECUs are programmed with a calendar code that learns your habits from Monday to Sunday. As well learns the car’s health, airflow, gas injection and other mayor sensors around the car to keep the car constantly running without performance lost or gains. It communicates directly with the vehicle motherboard.
      The trick as follows:
      Perform the gas pedal reset from Monday to Sunday, while performing the gas pedal reset you must drive the car for 10 minutes and threat it like a race car; drive it hard for 10 min.
      Remember the gas pedal is a sensor as well and has its relative memory in the ECU.
      The car will think you’re an insane bastard with a heavy wallet therefor will pre-inject more gasoline, air, etc etc.
      for this to work efficiently you must already ran out of warranty with your manufacturer. Manufacturers sometimes locks this reset during warranty periods to avoid fixes in your vehicle. Remember, the manufacturer hates and only wants your money. They lock it deeply that only the manufacturer can perform a reset, and automatically unlocks after warranty ends therefor you have issues you must pay for them to the manufacturer.
      If your car still under warranty get an old used ECU and get it in. Some specialist will help you unlock it and edit it as well.
      Making changes to your car like a new exotic exhaust without reprogramming the ECU will cause weird issues to your car at a point of causing RodKnock.

    I don't know one of these that actually works. As far as I knew they're all scams except from the company. Good luck getting one.

      The thing is it doesn't matter how it's called or what shape it takes, what they claim is not possible with such an OBD dongle.

      @@voltlog The only thing I know is I have an OBD 1 and 2 error reader which is a diagnostic tool. This tool allows you to clear the errors to see if it was a fluke or not and so after you repair your vehicle you don't have to wait for the computer to do it...OBD 1 is good for cars up to 1995 and 2 is 96 to current. Also insurance companies have them if, if you install it will lesson the cost of your insurance, but it will report back if you were speeding, built in GPS so when you get around open WiFi it reports on you. I'm not sure if they carry a sim card yet. Certain cars have the capability to install a performance chip. I used to be a mechanic before all of this crap and made a good amount of money doing that, but I painted Italian sports cars and averaged 5k per job. I was able to spray with no orange peel effect, but like a glass finish. Back in the early 80's, that was a lot of money. anyone with a nice car came there to get a paint job. Some days I would get 2 to 3 jobs per day. Even though the owner received a good chunk of that money, he brought me the work and I was my own boss. Lunch was always the best and on the owner with a case of top beer. This was a huge company and I was the only person allowed to spray any vehicles, made me feel good about myself. That place was certified all the way, mechanics, body men which is how I started to detail. My son is a master mechanic at Toyota, but they work on anything. I had 2 Dodge Ramcharger's a 1981 which had no computer and a 1988 that did, but all you had to do with that was turn the key on and off 3 times and it would blink a code, just don't lose the cross reference book.

      @@MrBrymstond Interesting insight, from what I hear these days Ferrari's have notoriously low quality paint jobs coming from the factory which you wouldn't expect for such an expensive car.

      @@voltlog And they have robots doing the job in most cases. It is a shame because it doesn't have to be this way.
