  • After several months of testing here's my full review of the Kinefinity TERRA 4K. I wrote more about the camera here:
    nofilmschool.c...
    The camera was tested here in New York as well as in Norway and France. Special thanks to all the friends and collaborators who helped make this video possible.
    Lots of different lenses since there are so many shoots and locations. My base set is 5 Leica R primes ranging from 28-135mm so those are in a lot of scenes - the little girl with the markers was definitely the 28mm, but I can't remember every shot. One of the Norway days I borrowed my friend's Sigma 18-35mm Art. The Bladerunner looking stuff in the office was on a 24-70mm Canon L, The stuff at night with the cars in the rain was a Pentax 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar, and the shot of the model with the chart and OLPF flare were on a Zeiss CP2 50mm cine prime.

    This is pretty much the best review ever of a camera. I understand how many creators want to be the first ones to get a review out but real use of the camera at many locations and settings is so much better. Thank you for taking so much time to create one of the best reviews ever.

    This review is a piece of art in itself. A testament that the maker is more important than the tool.
    Images are looking nice - Only thing I would worry about is clients saying "WTF is that Camera" I bought a Canon 1DC way back and though the image was terrific, the investment was a total failure.

    • @RaafiRivero
      @RaafiRivero  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the kind words, Franz. I agree. It's important (but difficult!) to find clients who are hiring you for your eye and not for whatever piece of gear you have.

    • @imageryweddingfilms2134
      @imageryweddingfilms2134 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know that I'd be worried about what clients think. First and foremost, at least personally, the clients that are hiring me for their corporate projects don't know and aren't looking at what I'm shooting with. Their money is going towards the end product right? So whether I show up on set with a RED, Arri, Gh5 or Kinefinity, they just care that they get a great film for their product, brand, business, etc. I think that this is a camera that not many people know about or are familiar with like Canon, Sony, etc. but I think the imagery stands with those giants like Arri, Red, Sony, Panasonic to where the client will be like, "I don't know that name, but damn it produces great imagery."

    This is my favorite review of any camera I've seen on the internet. I continually revisit this video (mini-doc) and am humbled by how well you crafted it. "Engaging" is an understatement. Seriously looking forward to more coming from your perspective sense of humor.
    Thank you, Raafi.

      @RaafiRivero  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, thank you for this message Collin. I think of this as one of my best "films" even though it's "only" a review. It is a review, however, and I'm proud of it. I was lucky to have some personal and professional travel that enabled me to capture such varied footage for this. I'm working on a project that involves more storytelling and travel now and hope to start getting some of those pieces on the web in the coming weeks.

    Fantastic camera review, best one I've ever seen. The non-concrete quality you are talking about for camera images is what you have endowed your review with. I loved the editing and sound. Music was much more unique than simple ambient scores.
    In other words, GREAT work!

    • @RaafiRivero
      @RaafiRivero  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Jack! It really IS hard to talk about the qualities of a camera when there's no way to measure the things we most often want to talk about. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend you watch Steven Yedlin's Display Prep Demo - yedlin.net/DisplayPrepDemo/ - in it he makes the argument that none of these cameras have an inherent look, and that we merely need to know how to manipulate the data, which is somewhat counter to what I'm saying but his argument and the footage demonstrating it are a compelling counter.

    • @jackevans5969
      @jackevans5969 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! I can see that technically being true, but it certainly doesn't feel like it aesthetically. I'll check it out!

    • @jackevans5969
      @jackevans5969 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just got around to watching it. It was really cool, very interesting. I think one main point he brought up was very important: he said "if the camera captures enough information." On the lower end, I think we are much more limited to what kind of images we can produce (i.e. DSLRs, 8-bit, etc). Once we start dabbling with RAW images, I think what he says makes a really compelling argument!

    Thanks for an amazing and honest review. I've always been intrigued by what Kinefinity has been able to do at such a reasonable price point. It's good to see a real cat using one in of these in the real world. There just may be one of these in my future because the images are amazing. Well done!

    I’ve watched this video semi-obsessively about 5 times now, and the tug on my wallet gets a little stronger every time- which is probably due to your eye and talent as much as the camera. 👍😀 Thanks for putting together such a nice mix of information and aesthetics. It’s been fun to watch what you’ve been getting out of the camera- great work!
    Like you said, it’s really hard to articulate these things, but it does seem to have that kind of tonal softness and sense of atmospheric depth you usually only find in Cine cams that are FAR more expensive. I’ve been agonizing over investing in a Scarlet W, but don’t quite have the client roster yet to support it, but this camera and the Mavo are lookin’ like pretty stellar alternatives.
    For whatever it’s worth, I’ve been geeking out on everything you’ve put out with this camera, and have been finding a lot of inspiration and encouragement in the images you’ve been making, and the general vibe you’ve got goin’. Good stuff, man!

    • @RaafiRivero
      @RaafiRivero  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for this comment and thanks for watching. For a long time I've been asking myself just why I put so much effort into this review. And I think the answer is that it's to share with people like you who can really see and appreciate what (I think) I'm seeing. Glad you dig it!

    • @Site07Design
      @Site07Design 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Raafi Rivero I’ll be honest- it was straight-up fevered gearhead camera lust that brought me to this video, but I ended up watching everything on your channel afterward. I always enjoy watching good work from talented people, but as I get older, I appreciate enthusiasm and generosity almost as much, of not more, than flat-out skill.
      You’re capturing beautiful images, but it’s also very clear you’re stoked to share your love of filmmaking, and that’s rad.
      I valued this review a ton, because it was super obvious it was coming from a guy who just genuinely digs MAKING stuff. There’s enough content on TH-cam of people trying to sell things and get likes, and this game across exactly (I think) as you intended: a dude who absolutely loves shooting, contributing something he hoped would be useful to others who get just as pumped up about film.
      If people are responding well, I think it’s because you’re coming from a good place, in addition to making badass images. 👍

    Yay, I am your 818th subscriber, and I'm already proud of that fact. Best review I ever saw of a camera, real use with a great eye. Going to buy this whenever I find the money (or the Mavo, whichever thing comes first). I'm a big believer in small size, but sometimes my A7s mk2 just doesnt cut it, and for the big stuff renting is fine, but for a lot of stuff it's also great to own a decent camera. Great job by making it look cinematic, that is still a lot more than just the camera...

    I’m still wondering about this camera as a current RED owner but this really helped me get a window into using it. Specs are specs and I’m over the Bloom style review. Yours is an honest talk about actually using it from a processionals perspective. Someone who knows how to pick a camera up and shoot, period. How it performs in that space. Seems very promising. Awesome work here. Genuine.

    • @RaafiRivero
      @RaafiRivero  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. I think real world tests are just as important as specs, and not enough reviews take the time to really use the camera first. I'm glad that other real pros appreciate it. Although, if you've already got a RED then you're pretty much all set, too.

      @@RaafiRivero Oh yeah, cameras can have a heavenly spec list but if the image doesn't call to you then it doesn't matter. Just like a low spec camera with a beautiful image can sometimes win in situations. I was going to ask if you're still in NY and would be willing to let me take a look at your Terra/Mavo LF. I have the older DSMC1 Scarlet MX so its showing its age at this point, and I'm finding myself shooting more natural & low light content, so it's starting to hurt. The Terra seems like a legitimate replacement and the tones remind me more of the Alexa sensor, which was ultimately where we were planning on moving ahead anyways.

    Raafi, it was cool to spot you today at Kinvefinity's NAB booth on Tuesday. Both Terra and MOVA are great cameras. Yes, bugs do need to be resolved. For instance, when playing with the Terra 4, the screen started glitching the moment I was switching below 25fps. Happened a few times even in front of the Kinefinity rep (who was very nice by the way). She said it's a firmware bug, and fortunately belonged only to that actual body. She asked me to try it on another Terra 4K unit, and the switch worked flawlessly.
    MOVE looks very promising. And the most important news - there might be an office opening in a few months somewhere in LA. Personally, I'm looking forward to renting those cameras out and experimenting more.

While Resolve offers a more robust solution for grading - top notch motion tracking, for instance, the new color correction features enable FCP to at least be a solid backup.

      what are your thoughts on the Mavo?

    • @RaafiRivero
      @RaafiRivero  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My basic thought is that I want one, ha. It's a little strange to say that after just having bought this camera last year but I like the true S35 sensor and the increased dynamic range. I had a chance to try it out at NAB, too (the anamorphic footage that's on their website). Really enjoyed shooting with it.

    • @VisualAnthony
      @VisualAnthony 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah i downloaded some of their footage yesterday and ran it through my everyday color grade workflow and i really like how it colors... it's really easy to work with. being from Alabama, it sucks that i cant just go test/rent a kinefinity. but im thinking the Mavo S35 is the choice. especially at that price tag.

      Do not get it. Unfortunately I feel that this camera is basically dead. With blackmagic announcing the amazing Pocket 4K for only $1295 with the same sensor, it feels like everything Kinefinity has done will be overshadowed. The dynamic range is weak compared to the Ursa Mini Pro, so if you want superior image you go with that camera. If you want better lowlight performance you go with the Pocket 4k. Now that blackmagic 4K is out it will likely surpass the color science of the Terra and even being that it's the same sensor. It will have better codecs too. At $4000 this camera is a tremendous value, but still not enough..

    • @FrankyEames
      @FrankyEames 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mo Sabri what makes you think they have the same sensor?

    • @overnightclassic2
      @overnightclassic2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's commonly believed that Pocket 4k, Kinefinity Terra 4K, and the Panasonic GH5s are all variants of the Sony IMX294CJK sensor. If you look at the specs of all 3 cameras, that seems to make sense. Because the image of the pocket 4K will likely be far superior to that of the Terra 4K (kinefinity color science is pretty poor among high-end cine cams), there's no reason to buy this camera. Kineraw is a dumb codec too compared to Cinema DNG. MAVO and MAVO LF look way better.

    What I like most in this review is the sound quality, very very good and same volume everywhere. Not like a lot of reviews where you have to adjust several times the volume not to bother your neighborhood...

    • @RaafiRivero
      @RaafiRivero  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. After uploading I thought that my voice is a little loud in the last section so it’s actually 1db lower in the Vimeo version.

    • @stephanes.
      @stephanes. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now that you say that, indeed, it sounds a little bit louder in the last section. But not a big problem.
      This new brand Kinefinity is really intriguing for me. But still too expensive for my budget. Now that the BMPCC 4K will be released, won't you do a review of it? Very interesting specs for a very very tiny price...

    • @RaafiRivero
      @RaafiRivero  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I think a lot of people who were considering this camera will be considering that one now. But there are still differences and reasons to stick with Terra. Besides, this camera is available now, that one isn't until the fall (at least) so that has to factor in for people looking to do something right away. Since I already have a camera I don't plan on doing a review of the BMPCC 4K but agree that it's an exciting announcement.

    • @stephanes.
      @stephanes. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But I must admit, the concept of the Kinefinity mount that allows to use a lot of different mounts is amazing. And especially the EF speedbooster... For the BMPCC, the speedbooster is very expensive.

    • @RaafiRivero
      @RaafiRivero  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah.. there were a few places where I had to stabilize. Not proud of it! LOL. In all seriousness, it's a necessary part of making up for moments where the shot isn't good enough. but when, as in cases like that, it becomes visible and takes you out of the story, then it's not doing the job right. I've actually subsequently brought down the amount of stabilization on that particular shot - it's shakier now, but less warpy. unfortunately TH-cam doesn't let you re-upload to the same link like Vimeo so you'll have to watch it there for inspection. the four shots starting at 1:34 all have some applied, and the car at 2:00, the kids at the end of the Paris section (a precious moment that would've disappeared unless I ran over to ask the mom, then grab the shot before I was totally set. The only way to save it was with stabilization), also a couple shots in the Villandry section.

    Amazing, Amazing....Amazing!!! They will improve more and more in the many years to come. But, compared to Top Cinema cameras currently in the market like the Arri and Red, price wise.... it's unbeatable. I hope they always keep their prices low with Super quality. I totally agree, at the end, it's all about what kind of image quality you get, this camera delivers cinema quality. By the way waiting on the ZCAM F8, that's another monster in the market.
