  • I show my first steps setting up and using a CNC3040 engraving machine. It uses the CNC USB controller software from Planet CNC. After setting the correct directions and steps per unit I show how to cut a simple profile. I generate the Gcode using DXF2Gcode program sourceforge.net/projects/dxf2... I then simulate the gcode using an online tool nraynaud.github.io/webgcode/
    The final result is a load of bull!!
    The bit I used is 10pcs3.175mm Shank 1.5x6mm-Tungsten-Steel-Parallel-Milling-Cutter bit.ly/Milling_Cutter

      you can assign a keyboard, mouse or controller button to act as your emergency cut off, in the software - have a look for key bindings. you can also set keys to pause or speed up / slow down the program. I have used one of these and it seems like the physical emergency button is purely decorative! Great Video.

    Hello! Thank you for such a great video! A neighbor gave me his old 3040 and I am going through the process of repairing it and hopefully using it. I've been doing research and people seem to say that there are problems using a parallel port to usb adapter to control the machine. Is that what you're using on your 3040? My laptop doesn't have a parallel port so I'm wondering if you had luck with your USB and if so where you sourced the adapter.. Thank you very much!

      Hey thanks! Much depends on what controller board is fitted. You need to take the lid off and look at the PCB's. Mine has two, the main control board is a JP-382C the other just controls the spindle speed. The JP382 board is a Chinese knock off of the Planet CNC controller and has a hooky copy of an old Planet CNC software which is no longer supported although it suits my needs.
      You can get the software I have here : drive.google.com/open?id=1wrRtQa8f2NDGwyjDSf6UvxCt20zEBo0_ but it will only work in demo mode with your controller. • @1nformatica

      A drag knife is a great idea, do you have a recommendation for one? The stepper motors on mine are Nema 23 type. These are generic type as long as it is the same degrees per step (1.8 °) it should be OK. Mine are 2 Amp rated but higher will be fine as the current is controlled by the stepper driver board. For my machine I would look at : HANPOSE Double Shaft 56mm Nema 23 Stepper Motor bit.ly/Nema23

    Hi, Thanks for posting this video. I've just bought one of these machines and the demo software is limited to 25 lines of gcode. You obviously have the licensed version - before I buy the licence, is there any latency issues using the supplied USB to parallel port lead - I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop, Windows 7 32 bit, which appears to work okay with the demo version. I've considered buying an old PC with a parallel port, install Linux to use LinuxCNC but space is an issue.

    • @1nformatica
      @1nformatica  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Bob, your machine is different to mine. Mine only has USB, no parallel option. Mine came with a "hooky" copy of the CNC USB program and the licence was included on the supplied CD although it was not obvious. There is an option under the "Help" tab to activate the license.

    • @bobbailey7024

      @@1nformatica Thanks for the info. I've been in touch with Planet CNC and they told me that many people were sold quite good machines but the controller is a cloned copy of their Mk 1 version, which is no longer supported. The software is also, let's say, 'non genuine'. The latest Planet CNC controller costs €119 +VAT, with an adaptor to get rid of the parallel port and the software licence is about €80 + VAT. They are based in Slovenia and very helpful. They told me the Chinese cloned controller is poor quality with very little cache memory but advised me to try it with their software and see how it performs. I'll buy the software licence, and when I've recovered from Christmas I'll probably upgrade the controller as well.

      @@1nformatica I gave up in the end. Planet CNC only licence the hardware, i.e. the control board - it seems that if you buy their control board for €119 + VAT you can use their software free of charge ( that's what I understand anyway). If you buy their software, it wont run as the control box needs the licence, which being a Chinese clone, they wont licence. They also offer absolutely NO warranty so I bought a very nice used PC and monitor for £40 with a parallel port, lead and keyboard and my son installed Linux Debian and LinuxCNC. Linux and Linux CNC is free and after a bit of a steep learning experience, it seems to be running fine. I've set it up to run XYZ and A and there is an option to set the axes automatically to zero in the setup. I haven't got that far yet! N.B LinuxCNC only works with a parallel port machine. Hope this helps.

    Man, everytime when I load a GCode, the software is putting a self generated offset at the X axis which messes up my cuts and carvings. I checked everything, please let me know what I should do. Thank you.

    • @1nformatica
      @1nformatica  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would try and narrow down where the offset is coming from. If the offset is always the same it could be either the design software which generates the code or in the CNC control software for the machine. Check you code with this online simulator nraynaud.github.io/webgcode/ do you see the offset in the simulation? Also I would try drawing just a simple square so you know what the GCODE is supposed to do. Maybe try this carbide3d.com/carbidecreate/ If the offset is varying it could be the "speeds and feeds" trying to move the axes too fast or cutting too much material can cause the stepper motors to skip steps. Let us know your progress. Good luck!!

    I bought the 3040 with the blue controller box and no software or drivers incuded whatsoever! I downloaded the cnc usb controller but the "joystick type controll panel" is just greyed out and therefore doesn`t react at all! Is it possible that I need a license to be able to control it? Did I download just a demo from planet cnc? Oh, and I am using windows 7 32bit. Can you help somehow?

    • @1nformatica
      @1nformatica  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The CNC USB software needs a license which is keyed to a serial number on the control board. I do not know if it's possible to generate such a key. Your choices appear to be either buying a license or trying one of the open source CNC programs.

    • @1nformatica
      @1nformatica  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My machine included a hooky copy of the old Planet CNC software you can see in the video. This needs a license code to be entered using the "Activate License" option under the "Help" tab at the top of the screen. There was a file on the supplied CD with this code. The code is linked to the serial number of the controller board.

      The controls are greyed out when the "emergency stop" icon has been pressed. Press again should return control. The "emergency stop" I refer to is the software red X icon top left in the window. The physical "emergency stop" button on the control panel does nothing on my unit!!

      @@@1nformatica Oh, I didn't. I thought it would stop everything and not a bit of it. But the very helpful people who sold it to me told me...
      The problem I am having is that my vertical axis is the length of the machine and my horizontal is across it. Well, since I want to engrave wooden signs, that is the wrong way round, but I CANNOT find a way to switch the axes in the software. The only thing I can think of doing is to switch the input cables so the X goes into the Y and vice versa. That will have the effect I want, but is there any downside to that? Or easier way to do it?

    • @1nformatica
      @1nformatica  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess that approach will work, can't see an issue doing it. Everything is relative, for me, I would rotate the design in whatever software you use through 90 degrees before generating the GCODE!

      When you turn on the controller do the stepper motors energise? My unit has a seperate power supply board which passes 24 volts DC to the axes board you need to measure that with a multimeter if yours is the same.

      You need to check with a multimeter that 24 volts is going to the axes board. On the spindle / power board there is a fuse for the 24 volts, maybe it has blown?

    I used this video two months ago to set up my new CNC 3040. It was priceless! however I woke up this morning and found that Microsoft has tried to install Microsoft edge on my computer. Now mind you I have Windows 7. I was prepared to not have to deal with updates. But today I open up my CNC USB controller to do a job and the updates have reset my controller. I hate Microsoft! Now I'm back to this video to try to reset. I hope the Microsoft update hasn't affected my ability to use my CNC :(

      1nformatica Thank you, I’ll try to do that, Let me ask you, your machine works good? No mechanical issues so far? Because my was standing half a year with no use, I tested it after I received it, but then it was just sitting in the basement , but now when I purchased a license for this software I tried to run it, and seems like X,Y motors are being jammed and making clanking metal noise trying to turn the shaft to move the axis ,and I need to use my hand to give it a crank spin, than it might move, don’t know what the hell is going on.
      Motors by it self works good when I removed them to check, but when they are back on, the are being jammed by something...

      Si te refieres a cómo generar GCODE para manejar el CNC, depende mucho de lo que quieras hacer. En mi ejemplo, corté una forma de Toro generando GCODE desde un archivo DXF. El archivo DXF a su vez se creó utilizando el programa "Inkscape". Puede ver este proceso en otro video: th-cam.com/video/XjSDippnGoM/w-d-xo.html Si desea hacer piezas de la máquina, necesitará un programa CAD, por ejemplo, Fusion 360 o Sketchup. Un saludo!
