I can easily shoot a less than 6 inch target with iron sights every single time first time shooting my Ak at that 100 yard distance. Not even taking my time. These rifles are much more accurate than people give them credit for. Especially with an optic.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually laughed out loud at any review until 28:00 minutes. That had me dying. As a former paratrooper from the 82nd AD with many years of wide ranging weapon experience I agree with everything you’ve been saying about the AK’s. People tell me regularly that ak’s are crap and I have to explain to them why they’re wrong.

Great video. Kalashnikov "overgas" is an intentional feature intended to maintain reliability from cold to hot conditions, regardless of rifle service condition. There is a huge difference in air density from ambients -50c to 50c, which greatly effects the gas system pressure from cold fire. Worth noting when you start playing with the recoil spring rate or gas pressure you will be optimizing the rifle for one condition only at the trade of reliability in extreme climate / fouled conditions.

I came across this while searching for a "rubber butt pad" to replace standard metal plate on rear of WBP Fox AK, since it was slipping all over my shoulder area due to lack of traction. Low and behold, simple solution: adhesive skateboard tape. Been watching the channel and appreciate your reviews. People visit AKOU store, lots of good stuff. I made a vertical foregrip for my AK to avoid the heat issue, just a shaped piece of a 2x4 held on by a hose clamp but for a $2 foregrip it works wonderful.
The recoil is not about energy (Joules) but the conservation of momentum. A relatively heavy bullet of 7.62 is mostly responsible for the recoil, and 5.56 has similar energy but accumulated in velocity and not so much in its mass.
the stock length test with using ur elbow and ur hand is the most helpful thing ive ever seen on any gun video. i love and prefer the woodstocks to but they never ever fit my length. its a reality ive always tried to ignore, but ur right, why am i forcing myself to fit the tool when the tool should fit me
rob ski's setup for his rifle is almost exactly what i have in mind to do to my ak when it gets here. probably a different muzzle break and use an optic instead of a scope and thats about it.

If you are going to shoot the AK rifle absolutely use that ALG spring! 60 rounds with my cheap standard spring and my shoulder was bruised. 400 rounds with the ALG and nothing at all! Easily cut the recoil in half. A must have for the serious shooter.
The "Costa Grip" doesn't work for more than a few minutes anyway (on a gun that would otherwise permit the use). I use the magwell grip on my ARs too. Want to make quick and reliable strip of a mag from an AR ... use a magwell grip. I love the guys who put the AR in their "work space" to check the chamber, then whip it around and the mag flies out.
Instead of cutting the piston you can also use a very small drill bit and punch a hole on the side of your gas tube. This is how an SKS expells overpressure
I tried that trick you said and my arm went straight to the handgrip, like my arm was the perfect length. Glad because I love the wood stock and I dont wanna change it.
I agree with Rob on the ALG spring, I did a 600 round test. 300 round per spring the ALG & the Wolf extra power AK spring. I could tell the slight difference between the 2 springs. I did the test in a over gassed Npap I would like to try the same test again in a Wasr or my Wum-1. I at times rather shoot 7.62x39 than the .223/5.56 I like the recoil feel of the AK over the BB gun feel of the AR 15.
The ALG spring would be a nice replacement for old tired parts kit springs. I just installed a wolf xp spring in my 1973 Romanian AK to try out. The gun has seen a bit of use obviously so wouldn't doubt the 40 year old spring is due for replacement.
27:50 I don't think it looks ugly at all. I actually got excited about AKs seeing the modifications you had done to them to make them more modern. I think it strengthens their capabilities and also makes them look better. The classic look is classy looking, but the m4 stock adapter, polymer parts, rail etc just looks tactical and slick to me
Absorb recoil? Put on a AR style rear slide stock so that you can install an ATI butt pad, the thickest one. You will have to make a few holes in your butt stock to fit the ATI butt pad but it will be worth it one hundred fold. These butt pads have an almost full recoil absorption effect. Kind of like a dead blow hammer. in my world they are by far one of the best product upgrades you can do for you higher energy rifles.
I know this is 5yrs old but anyone new, I’d like to mention talon grips now makes granite style ak hand grips. You just peel off the white paper, carefully place it on the grip, and then use a hair dryer on it for 2-3min and then your hood for at least a couples years. Hope this helps at least one person 👍🏻

Theirs another option for over gassed rifles. AK 47 with 45 degrees gas blocks can have threads tapped in the port inside the gas block and screw in a corresponding grub screw with a smaller port hole drilled into the grub screw itself. This can be done to the AK47s with 45 degree angle blocks with minimal work. If you want to do this to AK74 or AK47 with the 90 degree gas block you must have the tools and know how to remove the gas block from the rifle to acess the gas port inside the block and insert a grub screw plug. Ive done it to two rifles with 90 degree gas blocks so far and it has worked like a charm. I advise against modifying the gas piston because you will have a lot of gas escaping venting off which may minimally effect bullet velocities and possibly render the firearm useless until you replace the piston. In fact I don't like the adjustable piston they're coming out with that much it's okay but not for me. Also with the 45 degree gas block you would be able to tinker around with different grub screws with different size port holes to see what works best for your rifle. This modification is rather cheap if you have the tools or know somebody with them.
I put in a heavy wolff recoil spring in all my aks (Arsenal). It help with recoil and over gassed aks. No issues with cycling and that includes ak74s. Also recoil rubber buffers don't work.
From my experience all aks tend to be over gassed. All my Arsenal cycle the same way. I don't see too many inconsistences between them. I would like to get a surplus vented gas tubes to test out on my AKs. I read before that some century aks had issues with heavy springs. However I think they had the vented ports.

I dig these upgrades. I got an IMI collapsible M-4 style stock on one of mine. I also dig the recoil buffers which are just a little piece of gel plastic that absorbs some recoil: simple cheap fix.
Got an Arsenal SLR 107FR and a Century NPAP M70 for $800. Stock, and the slanted muzzle brake are my only complaints on the NPAP. Haven't shot the SLR yet.

AK Thumb, ouch... :p Good video, but it might have helped to touch more on different buttstocks, such as underfolders, and how to deal with perceived recoil. Interestingly, the first time I shot an AK, it seemed to sting me a bit. My WASR, though, is a pussycat even with a Bonesteel metal folding stock. Possibly the best training for dealing with AK recoil is time behind a .308 or bigger rifle...
The first rifle I trained with was the FAL,after that no problems with other rifles I trained with,I first used AK-47 with under folding stock, the balance being farther forward I actually preferred it to wood stock,easier to keep rifle on target,but that's my own experience

The recoil is minimal 0n 7.62x39 50 years ago they had semi auto in 7.62x51 whitch is a 308 or the bar in 3006 this little round for the ak is very smooth shooting gotta be peoples forms
I recently put a Midwest Gen2 Handguard on my N-Pap M70, I haven't been able to stretch it out beyond 25yds yet but It was certainly harder to re-zero a red-dot for it. Hopefully it isn't causing issues since Yugo-Friendly parts aren't common and it is a nice handguard.
Haha I think I’m way too tall for my AK, just did your ‘stock to inside of the elbow’ measurement system… I’m able to grip the mag. Definitely going to need to get a longer stock

I put on the fighter break and the ALG spring this summer and was very surprised how much recoil was reduced. I thought it would help some, but my AK no longer felt the same.
Great vid rob like always. BTW I run the grip tape from ace hard wear a lot on my aks. Run a layer of it on the black polymer handguard. And a strip on the safety lever and allows me to operate safety with my pointer finger. Saves me the 60 dollars for a krebs. Works great for me.
For me so far it seems to be stock length. My shorter stocks need to be held differently (I'm probably not doing it correctly) and i feel the kick a little more than on those that are longer. Example: PSA Black Poly vs Magpul Zhukov.
AK recoil? If someone is bothered by recoil,Daisey makes a very nice BB-gun....I carried an AK in VN in 68 as a backup on my bird. It always worked if i needed it...
I'm too tall and the length of pull on my AK is extremely short. I find that my cheek is getting smacked because of where I have to put my head to actually see a sight picture. That's the main reason why I have issues with AK recoil

I just got a PTR 32 in 7.62x39. The recoil impulse is like nothing I've ever shot. Not unpleasant but WEIRD. Best I can describe the roller-locked recoil impulse is like a long-recoil shotgun without the "thump" when the barrel and bolt hits the rear of the receiver. Makes me want to try one of their 5.56 rifles. I have those ALG recoil springs in all of my AK's.
I have been considering cutting a (small) slot on both sides of the "star" shaped portion of my gas tube.{Just behind the point where it becomes a cylinder again.} This would be,i believe, a good way to bleed that excess gas off. Thoughts?

I have old Polish AKS-47. Radom is best quality in Varsow Pact guns. E German folding stock’s Style i do not like. Old Gunther AKM with wooden stock would be nice. I have NVA combat rig too.
Skateboard Tape is way better than stair tape and have a Sawzall and can shorten your arm to fit your AK... for a nominal fee of course. you may also want a percosett and a six pack afterwards though.
Wow 7" group at 500 yards. I shoot a Chinese Type 81 and I get 8" at 200 meters. Every once in a while, the gun shoots these amazing 1.5" groups at 100 meters or even 3/4" at 50 meters instead of its typical 2" at that distance. But then it is back to 4" at 100 and 8" at 200. I will need to figure out what is happening when the rifle is shooting very well and what its doing differently when its not shooting well.

I have noticed a recoil reduction on my AK's when I put the ALG defense spring in them they are a lot stronger then the normal surplus springs

AK47 heat keeps blood warm in the winter months.
I put in a heavy wolff recoil spring in all my aks (Arsenal). It help with recoil and over gassed aks. No issues with cycling and that includes ak74s. Also recoil rubber buffers don't work.
From my experience all aks tend to be over gassed. All my Arsenal cycle the same way. I don't see too many inconsistences between them. I would like to get a surplus vented gas tubes to test out on my AKs. I read before that some century aks had issues with heavy springs. However I think they had the vented ports.

Try US PALM STAINLESS STEEL LATCH CAGE MAGAZINES. Use a Irwin clamp with the rubber yellow jaws to disassemble the bottom plate, wear safety glasses.

I dig these upgrades. I got an IMI collapsible M-4 style stock on one of mine. I also dig the recoil buffers which are just a little piece of gel plastic that absorbs some recoil: simple cheap fix.
I have Midwest Industries furniture and Magpul that make the AK feel more comfortable.

Got an Arsenal SLR 107FR and a Century NPAP M70 for $800. Stock, and the slanted muzzle brake are my only complaints on the NPAP. Haven't shot the SLR yet.

Idk, I bought an m48 Mauser as a 13 year old. That is what I compare recoil to, the ak47 has almost none.

Good video, but it might have helped to touch more on different buttstocks, such as underfolders, and how to deal with perceived recoil. Interestingly, the first time I shot an AK, it seemed to sting me a bit. My WASR, though, is a pussycat even with a Bonesteel metal folding stock.
Possibly the best training for dealing with AK recoil is time behind a .308 or bigger rifle...
The first rifle I trained with was the FAL,after that no problems with other rifles I trained with,I first used AK-47 with under folding stock, the balance being farther forward I actually preferred it to wood stock,easier to keep rifle on target,but that's my own experience

The recoil is minimal 0n 7.62x39 50 years ago they had semi auto in 7.62x51 whitch is a 308 or the bar in 3006 this little round for the ak is very smooth shooting gotta be peoples forms

I recently put a Midwest Gen2 Handguard on my N-Pap M70, I haven't been able to stretch it out beyond 25yds yet but It was certainly harder to re-zero a red-dot for it. Hopefully it isn't causing issues since Yugo-Friendly parts aren't common and it is a nice handguard.
Or you can get a vertical grip and put it on the picattiny railed handguard
Haha I think I’m way too tall for my AK, just did your ‘stock to inside of the elbow’ measurement system… I’m able to grip the mag. Definitely going to need to get a longer stock

I put on the fighter break and the ALG spring this summer and was very surprised how much recoil was reduced. I thought it would help some, but my AK no longer felt the same.
Great vid rob like always. BTW I run the grip tape from ace hard wear a lot on my aks. Run a layer of it on the black polymer handguard. And a strip on the safety lever and allows me to operate safety with my pointer finger. Saves me the 60 dollars for a krebs. Works great for me.

My KNS gas pistons detents got blown off after 2000 rounds. I don’t recommend it unless they upgrade the adjustable detents to take pressure.

You build a beautiful rifle and you sure shoot fantastic with it. I wish I had one.
For me so far it seems to be stock length. My shorter stocks need to be held differently (I'm probably not doing it correctly) and i feel the kick a little more than on those that are longer. Example: PSA Black Poly vs Magpul Zhukov.

AK recoil? If someone is bothered by recoil,Daisey makes a very nice BB-gun....I carried an AK in VN in 68 as a backup on my bird. It always worked if i needed it...
I'm too tall and the length of pull on my AK is extremely short. I find that my cheek is getting smacked because of where I have to put my head to actually see a sight picture. That's the main reason why I have issues with AK recoil

I just got a PTR 32 in 7.62x39. The recoil impulse is like nothing I've ever shot. Not unpleasant but WEIRD. Best I can describe the roller-locked recoil impulse is like a long-recoil shotgun without the "thump" when the barrel and bolt hits the rear of the receiver. Makes me want to try one of their 5.56 rifles. I have those ALG recoil springs in all of my AK's.

I have been considering cutting a (small) slot on both sides of the "star" shaped portion of my gas tube.{Just behind the point where it becomes a cylinder again.} This would be,i believe, a good way to bleed that excess gas off. Thoughts?

Skateboard Tape is way better than stair tape and have a Sawzall and can shorten your arm to fit your AK... for a nominal fee of course. you may also want a percosett and a six pack afterwards though.
Wow 7" group at 500 yards. I shoot a Chinese Type 81 and I get 8" at 200 meters. Every once in a while, the gun shoots these amazing 1.5" groups at 100 meters or even 3/4" at 50 meters instead of its typical 2" at that distance. But then it is back to 4" at 100 and 8" at 200. I will need to figure out what is happening when the rifle is shooting very well and what its doing differently when its not shooting well.
