  • Please press the subtitles botton (c/c) near the lower right of the window if you want to see the credits (Painting's title and painter's name) for all the paintings in this video. There is only one painting (at minute 3:41) for which I haven't been able to find who the author is, so please let me know if you know.
This is a vinyl recording of Debussy's Clair de Lune performed by the London Symphony Orchestra; arranged and conducted by Stanley Black. It is an arrangement because Mr. Black adds a few countermelodies not found in the original piano score and takes a few liberties with the expression, but overall the final result is awesome and effective. Although there are many orchestrations of this piece (among them a well-known one by Stokowski) I particularly love this arrangement because the orchestra sounds large, but the interpretation is always slow and delicate (or let's say, never too loud, always within the boundaries and the mood that the title of the piece suggests). Also listen to the emphasis on the basses, and the subtle building of emotion achieved with appropriate phrasing! Other highlights are the way the main theme comes back (at 3:45); the violins playing so incredibly soft... and then the reaching of a climax at the end of the phrase with a particularly passionate and daring emphasis on the basses (4:21).

I'm an old man of 78 and just heard this masterpiece of music again today which brought me to tears. Unfortunately we will never be privileged to hear it again in such a volatile world, music like this comes from the heart which is now only history.

@lucy10by: Arguably the best impressionist piece (even if Debussy didn't like that apellation) of all time. Even the simplest piano version evokes in me a whole range of emotions...from melancholy through insouciance and whimsy...to philosophical reflection or nostalgic yearning and ultimately - hopefulness and aspiration. Likewise, this instrumental rendition leaves me smiling in a puddle of tears, and somehow - uplifted.

    • @JorgeBennettCompositor

Nice comment! However, the composer's name is not "De Lune" it is Debussy, Claude Debussy... ha ha ha. Or perhaps you meant to call me Mr. De Lune? Mr. Lunatic? "de Lune" is the French phrase for "from de moon" or "of the moon". "Clair de Lune" could be translated to English as "moon glade" or "moon gap" or "moon clearing". Some might simply translate is as "moonlight". Just saying!

Thanks... the painting at 4:51 is by victorian-era artist John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893). He is known for his remarkable night scenes. However, if you search for this painting you'll notice the original is much darker (but not less impressive). I wanted my video to to have a lot of color so I added color to this particular image. I guess my editing makes it look more fantastical and more "contemporary"...

@B17Boy Thank you for the link! Yes, it is a very beautiful arrangement and performance. I loved the sound of the strings (specially the first time they appear), and the interpretation was never too loud, and also very sensitive. I had heard that version before (it is an orchestration by Stokowsky) but not by that conductor in the video. I must admit it is at least as good as this version I have here, and not too different (if I compare it to others that I've heard), except for the beggining.

Thank you! The painting at 5:10 is one of the many moonlight scenes by 19th century english painter John Atkinson Grimshaw (1848-1918). All his moonlight paintings are remarkable. They are gloomy and splendid at the same time. Just do a google image search typing his name and you'll find plenty of them.

My favorite is the painting @ 3:44. It’s similar to the scene I beheld at our summer camp in NH one evening around midnight. I couldn’t sleep and had put on this music as I sat on the dock and watched as the moon came from behind the tall pines and broke through the few clouds. As the moonlight danced across the gentle waves toward me, the music matched exactly what I was seeing. I understood them that Debussy had seen the same scene and had managed to capture it in music. Magical.

@417midget Hi, the painting at 1:15 is titled "Moonlight on the Sound" by the great American impressionist painter Frederick Childe Hassam (1859-1935). The same painter has another beautiful moonlight painting called "Moonlight Scene", and another one called The Athenaeum - Isle of Shoals. They are all hard to find in high resolution.
