In this video, Sean explains how to pronounce in american english the /ə/ sound to speak with an american accent. The /ə/ sound is also known as the schwa sound. It's one of the most common sound in english that you can find in banana for example. It's usually the sound of the letter a, but it could be the letter e, i, o or u.

I hate when I'm reading something and I don't know if i have to pronounce this sound, or any of the thousands of other sounds than a single letter can represent. This is the hardest part of learning English for a non-native speaker, or at least for me haha. Great video. I liked when he said "it's like thinking". I think that made me understand how to make this sound. Thank you!

Yeah, that's true. The only solution I see is to teleport yourself to the city that speaks the accent you're trying to replicate. But even there you'll encounter all kinds of accents.

Thanks for this man, but English is just ridiculous in my language you can spell a word you never seen before just from it's sound, and every letter have one sound. Makes me appreciate it much more.

thank you so much for your good explanatory video about schwa sound. Now there is something i don't understand in english have we to learn each words specific prononciation/phonetic? for example reading the word "sun" is there a rule to know if you'll have to pronounce the letter "u" like "ə" ?

There are indeed English pronunciation rules. For the example you mentioned, the general rule is that when a word only has one vowel and ends in a consonant, you pronounce it with a short vowel sound (which sort of sounds like "uh").
However, there are many, many rules and they aren't always easy to remember and apply. Plus, there are exceptions. So we recommend that students always learn the correct pronunciation as soon as they learn a new word's meaning, instead of focusing on rules. (That's why our app has a listening/pronunciation step for every new word.)
Feel free to learn a few of the most common rules if you are someone who enjoys "rational" explanations, but make sure you put them into practice right away to help you remember them, and watch out for exceptions. Learning the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) can also be a very helpful tool for understanding English pronunciation: www.mosalingua.com/en/international-phonetic-alphabet-pronunciation/

¡Hola! estudio en español más tienen muchas palabras muy difícil de pronuncia y de comprención pero me gusta mucho siempre foe mi sueño aprendiender hablar Español más con mosalingua estoy conseguindo a los poco porque tambien no tengo mucho tiempo, las veces pienso en dejar de estudiar, las veces no,no,no tengo que estudiar es muy difícil Buenos dias!

Because this could be due to your accent... in any case, I know that native speakers are not always the best ones to explain phonetic differences to language learners because for a native speaker it comes so naturally that it's hard to explain. @@mosalingua I was raised in Florida, in Volusia County. I was homeschooled and hung out with a relatively limited population that included hippies. My mom was born in Utah and spent a good portion of her teenage life in Florida. and my dad was from Florida/The South but didn't sound southern even though his parents had a bit of a drawl. I have step family from Ohio/Utah and I've also spent some time around Mexicans and Californians.
