Free up a Keyless Chuck

  • My drill bit got stuck in the chuck, this is just a quick video on how I fixed the keyless chuck on my dewalt drill. If you have a chuck that has jammed then this video may be useful.
This was way better than sending in for repair and the hassle of not having your drill for a period . After using this method I have had no problems with the chuck since.
Worth a try but don't hit that chuck too hard. If a slight tap doesn't free up the chuck then there may be another problem there and the drill may have to go for repair.

    I can't thanks enough,
I've had two of these old heavy as hell drills. But I worked them to death but years ago the chucks got stuck like this. Now, thanks to you I just fixed them both in 10 minutes with a hammer, flat head screw driver, and a little machine oil. I had to tap turn, tap, turn, tap, turn about 50 times ,little by little , to get it turned all the way back in, to oil the chuck jaws and surfaces they slide on. then it just got easier and easier to turn them in and out. Now they go all in and out with a good spin. SOOO cool.

Worked for me on my sons Dewalt. It was struck in the wide open position, going by what you said I knew the problem was with the three locking locking fingers. I tried , with a flathead pushing them back, heard a bit of a click from one of them, we were back in action. Not sure if WD is the best , it tends to dry things out and oil will make it attract dust, so I gave it just a smear of light oil in the crucial parts and hope to do it every now and again. Many thanks for the info. Greetings from Ireland 👍👍

I found you through your video on the impact driver trigger fault, I left my comments on how good that was. Now I see this. I bought these two tools as a set [Impact driver and drill]. My drill also does this intermittently but the worst thing is that most of the time it won't stay tight. It's like the dead stop of the chuck when you release the trigger, causes the chuck sleeve to continue to rotate and loosen. The bit either falls out or is deep in the timber and I'm then messing around trying to grip it in the chuck again without bending or breaking the bit. I cannot emphasise enough how disappointed I am in pretty much all the cordless range of Dewalt. Unfortunately, 12 tools and 8 batteries, I'm stuck with them for some time. They will be replaced by another make as they go, though.

One of the 3 'fingers' of my chuck was stuck all the way out, the other two were going in and out freely. The stuck one was out about an eight of an inch further than the two that were still moving though. I thought that seemed pretty bad, but hey, nothing to lose by trying to fix it. Alas, your video helped me fix it! I had to really work on it a few times, thought I may have been coming close to hitting too much and too hard, but it seems to be good now. Applied a good amount of oil, loosening and tightening the chuck to distribute. Thanks again!

Your video put me in the right direction, thanks! I had to go a few extra steps. In case this might help others, here's what I did. I tried your method. This did not free it, but did enable me to loosen it a little at a time. Tap, loosen, tap, loosen, etc. I noticed that one of the 'fingers' was definitely not staying level with the others. Regardless, I was able to get it open mostly by using my robogrips. Then, I drenched it in WD-40 (any good penetrating oil would probably do the trick) a few times. Drench, drain, drench, drain, try to turn. Now it is at the point of opening and closing almost normally - at least I don't have to try to use pliers to try to turn it anymore. I was proud to finally get a DeWalt having always owned cheap drills, but having this problem with the drill not being very old was very disappointing. Hopefully, this will extend the life although I'm sure the best fix in my case is a new chuck.

I have what I think is a similar problem with my almost brand new Einhell drill, though on mine there's one chuck jaw lower than the other two.
The chuck jaws aren't locked in-place, I can fully open & close them - but the rotation isn't smooth & the locking mechanism doesn't tighten.
Tried a gentle tap with a hammer as shown, but no joy. :(
I know what caused it in my case; when tightening the chuck (by hand) onto a small drill bit, it slipped out of alignment.
I'm surprised this caused damage though, as I really wasn't applying excessive force.
I'm hesitant to make a Warranty claim, as they clearly preface the service as only being free for genuine faults not improper use - and I can imagine a shipping + repair bill might end up far in excess of the meagre £30 I paid for the drill.

In my case the chuck jaws were rusty causing friction and freezing the chuck.. Tap with a hammer, rotate, tap, rotate until the jaws were fully closed. Then spin them against a sanding pad to polish them smooth. Oil, run in and out a few times and the chuck now operates smoothly.

thanks, just used this myself, only mine was not tightening and was jammed wide open - tapping on the teeth with two screwdrivers and some WD40 did the trick!

Great tip. Freed it up straight away. Mine needed a tiny bit of WD40 once it was unstuck as it then it was smooth as new.

yeah but mine is stuck tight with the bit locked in. I tried to loosen it but it starts ckicking and doesnt loosen. how do I get this to release the bit?

    • @handymancraftglasgow
      @handymancraftglasgow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

That's the difficult part. I did use a wrench on mine one time but there is a very high risk of wrecking the chuck.
I would start off with gentle tapping, a squirt of oil and go from there.

I was just given a bunch of tools and to my surprise, the dewalt 20v max xr hammer drill was in the box without a battery and to my surprise, i used my battery it worked but could not for the life of me unscrew it. There was no bit the teeth were closed.. Your hammer method and a little bit of wrench action it unscrewed and a little bit of wd 40 i got a 130 drill for free. SCORE. Thanks for the tip.. It also came with the 20v max impact driver *(not xr) but still free is free

Try tapping each of the chuck jaws in turn, see if that loosens it any.
