    Thank you for the well illustrated advice. For a normal electric drill, you have to use a spanner to immobilize the threaded shaft that holds the chuck before striking the L key.

      I took my electric Makita outside with the hex key in place, held it to the ground and put it in reverse. It did unscrew the chuck when the hex hit the ground, when hammering didn't work.

    tried all you recommended but to no avail ,I had to cut off most of the old chuck with a hacksaw and then heat up the remains with a blowlamp (gas torch? USA ) only then did it come off . I must say I was very near throwing the thing in the trash (rubbish ) UK . took 2 hours.. and broke 3 impact driver bits trying to remove that centre screw .. even when I drilled out the screw the chuck would not give up and move.. thank goodness for heat .. I felt like had won the lottery when the chuck finally came off.. Conan, UK

      Squirt a bit of WD-40 or any other kind of lubricant on the chuck and let is set for a minute. You can put some vise
      grips on the chuck and try to bust it loose with a hammer.

  • @drkastenbrot

    Im trying to upgrade the chuck on a brand new drill and the retaining screw itself is not the problem. The chuck is screwed on so tight, I assume there is loctite involved. I could not get it to move no matter how hard I hit the allen key and I even damaged the chuck in the process. Can I take apart the gearbox from the inside to get the shaft out?

  • @RupertRichardson
    @RupertRichardson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video. My keyless chuck had jammed - shut of course - so I had to grind it off, but the video showed just where to grind, and the bit about the wrong-handed screw was essential, as was the advice on cooling and heating. Both were needed, so maybe you did it right. Tip: if your drill is a DeWalt, it has a Torx 20 screw. If you try to undo it fresh out of the freezer, the Torx bit shatters...

  • @dillwiggle2

    How come when i whack the allen key the drill wants to spin and wont get the chuck loose ? Am I missing something here. The drill is on low speed (1) and when i turn the allen key by hand first it stays really tight until i whack it with the hammer and the drill slowly spins. Is this just a really stubborn chuck or any other suggestions ?

      Time for the hammer, LOL! When this happens I've had good luck using a hammer and a punch. Clamp the stuck bit in a vise with the bottom of the drill chuck facing up. Place the punch on the chuck's body next to the jaws. Strike the punch with the hammer until the chuck's jaws slide off of the bit. This method will usually work. In the rare case that it doesn't, I will resort to cutting the chuck off of the drill with a grinder and cutoff wheel. -Mark

      The Makita model number HP1640 does not have a chuck screw. If you follow the instructions shown in the video it will come off. The problem with Hammer Drills, is that because of the constant hammering the chuck will be harder to remove from the spindle. Dewalt has 4 variations of the DW990 and another with model number DW990Q type 4 all of which show the Transmission as being no longer available and they don't offer a replacement suggestion. Just a heads up regarding Dewalt tool model numbers.... Dewalt tools sometime have different variation for the same model number. This is true for your DW990. These show Type 1, Type 2 and so
      on. It is very common for the parts between the different types to not be interchangeable.

      eReplacementParts.com i understand i took the motor off of my dw990 and put it on my dw 991 with new carbon brushes as well as put the trigger switch that my dw990 useing same fwd and reverse switch that came on the dw991 because the fwd & reverse of my dw990 dont fit the shell of the dw991 but it's a hundred percent Improvement in performance and I can get the clutch with the spindle that can handle a 1/2 chuck on ebay new old stuck I might do that next and it would be like8 having my dw990 the way it was in 2001 when I purchased it i do own a newer lithium 12 v max but love the rock solid rocket construction of the older dewalts and other brands now they feel so cheap so my motor is of my type 4 dw990 dewalt so its a xrp model its heavy duty motor the trigger switch is from dw990 so its heavy duty k got a new clutch coming to me for dw990 with the right coller that turns up to 23 before drill icon i just need a new transmission gearbox and am back in business not to say it dont work just fine with the clutch from dw991 and transmission from the same model I'm just going to use it for diy repair projects around my house for work i use my dw995

      Fixed it by hitting the end of the chuck with a hammer. Yay!

      I cut the outer sleeve length wise on a angle so I wouldn't cut the plastic housing with a band saw. Peeled the sleeve off put a releif cut next to a jaw and knocked the jaw out with a hammer and screwdriver. Could be done with a sawzall all the metals that were cut were very soft.

      @FIXTechGuides  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Ed, some chucks take quite a few hits to remove them. Just make sure your drill is in the drill mode and is set to low speed.

    how to remove a left hand threaded screw: use your other drill

    • @kristiankolev8441
      @kristiankolev8441 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The1fuzzydog If the bolt is so seized that the head gets heavily damaged (or already is so) there's really not a more merciful option for the chuck and the whole drill.

  • @alexplorer
    @alexplorer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't believe there was all this screwing/unscrewing by hand. Just pull the trigger! That's how I always adjust/tighten my chuck.

    why would you beat with the side of a snap on dead blow hammer ,,, good grief ,,, and then use water pump pliers where vise grips would work so much easier ,,,, ah well , at least your cream shirt stayed clean.
