Crazy they were able to coordinate the autonomous sample return, rendezvous, and transfer all while only having 1 com sat in range from the far side of the moon. The names of China's aerospace industry all come from Chinese mythology. Chang'e is a beautiful goddess living on the moon, and her palace is called the Heavenly Palace. She has a pet named Jade Rabbit, and her husband is an ordinary person living on Earth. When they meet, they need a bird called a magpie to build a bridge, which is called the Magpie Bridge.
By the way, Chang'e was an ordinary human being on earth, who then ascended into a goddess living on the moon. Chang'e's back story makes it a fitting name for moonlanders. The Heavenly Palace (Tian Gong) is the place where all gods and goddesses live, which is present in multiple Chinese mythological stories. The Magpie Bridge (Que Qiao) is from another story named The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. It is the story behind Qixi, the Chinese Valentine's Day. It is about the forbidden romance between the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. They got banished to opposite sides of the Heavenly River (essentially the Milky Way). Once a year, on the day of Qixi, a flock of magpies would form the Magpie Bridge to reunite the lovers for a single day. Hence the name for those communication satellites.

@@davidgmaloof For China, this is not a competition. China is just perfectly executing its plan 20 years ago. This plan is currently announced to land on the moon in 2030, but it is obvious that there will be further space development plans later. What is the United States doing? The United States has only one plan: to land on the moon again before China and declare its victory. What happens next? Just like 70 years ago, destroy all data,
Not really a competition. We've sent more complex rovers to Mars. We've sent actual humans to the moon 60 years ago. China still can't. If they are competing with anyone, it's India.
Not only does it motivate us to DO the space thing, but each "team" plays a bit differently. So, we end up with different strategies, designs, and aesthetics. One nation can't try everything. It would be too messy and confusing for the people working on these projects, and the funding (both monetary and from public support) would be spread too thin to give the punch that space plans need to succeed. If you have competition, our species can get away with trying multiple methods without any cons, and with all the pros. Plus, there's a certain extent of artistic joy that comes with seeing these nations build their spacecraft into different shapes and colors and patterns. I remember seeing the Mars-94 from FAM and thinking wow that shit dope, why didn't we get one of those? Each culture brings their own flare into the scene, and I am HERE for it.

Yes, China is seriously in gear. But I think SpaceX will be first with the HLS. Now that the launch of starship has been successful twice, HLS can be built and tested. Knowing SpaceX they'll build a few of them with more spares out back. My guess is they'll do an unmanned landing of the HLS before they send a crewed one. China is a long way from a manned moon craft and lander, a few years behind SpaceX although that gap can shrink a lot. Their biggest problem however, is rockets. Do they even have anything remotely capable of launching a manned craft + lander to the moon?

@paulmichaelfreedman8334 the Starship HLS requires at least 15 Starships (which have never reached Earth orbit so far) refuelling it in orbit in order to land on and take off from the Moon.
That is such a cool concept to melt the lunar regolith using a magnifying glass into the shape you can use to build something. That's amazing, I hope they can do that because regardless of how strong it will be that would just be cool to start building stuff on other plants.

I think- I'm not really sure- but I think that the reason the CNSA keeps calling Lunar modules/ missions by the "Chang'e" designation, is that according to folklore/ mythology, Chang'e was the name of some celestial figure or other, who lived in the moon. No, Artemis has been planned and in the works for decades. It's not like we tossed together an SLS rocket over a weekend and threw up a capsule we had lying around (you think government works that fast?). NASA learned a lot from orbit, but they want to learn more about the rest of the star system. This is where the lunar "Gateway" comes in. For reaching anywhere else in the solar system, it would be much easier and more efficient, for a number of reasons, namely not having to fight with Earth's massive gravity or atmosphere, to set up a vehicle at the gateway station and begin from there. All while also allowing easy access to the lunar service. Artemis has been in the works in some form since the early 00s. It aligns with NASA's goals going forward, which is why we're transitioning to that from the ISS over the next decade. So no, no pissing matches or conspiracies here, just a good agency trying to do the best science they can with the budget they're given.

Since Long March-10 has never flown, it would be nice to mention the Starship. That is nearly 10 times the lift capacity of the Long March 10. Starship can carry 250 tons in a non -reusable form, nearly 10 times that of the Long March-10..
There was another video that stated the starship needs to be refueled in earths orbit before it could leave towards the moon. It would take 10 to 15 starship size launches to get the fuel required into orbit. Then there is the problem of restarting the engines to begin the journey to the moon. So there is a lot of parts that need to be solved for starship. In summary. There is a lot of work to be done to man the moon on both sides.
@@carljohnson45 So HLS can take a lot of equipment and people there. 10-15 refuels seems like a lot, but if Starship can be operated much more cheaply than the F9/FH, then it could become quite routine. Also Spacex would need to do most launches over the horizon on floating platforms, otherwise that's too much noise for the local populations.
I'm beginning to wonder if the focus on reusability and size might be working against Space X and NASA. Look at the progress the Chinese are making with more "traditional" moon landing systems. It won't be much good having a huge, reusable rocket if the Chinese run the moon base and they have all the advantages of that
Starship can carry 250 tons to LOW EARTH ORBIT, and LM10 mentioned here is expected to carry 27 tons to EARTH-LUNAR INJECTION ORBIT. LEO lift capability of LM10 is about 70 tons so you can say that expendable Starship will be 3.5 times more powerful than LM10.

I'm 100% behind the Chinese moon program. I am still completely at a loss as to how the USA and NASA lost the initiative so completely regarding space.
Well if Spacex with Starship can do it relatively affordably, that will be a huge game changer. I have no confidence in Boeing or the SLS, it's not sustainable financially speaking. The Apollo program had 400,000 people working on it at the peak of development in 1967. Spacex is doing far more dollar wise with only 13,000.
谢谢你,但你把两个故事搞混了
NO!嫦娥的丈夫是后裔,你把“牛郎织女”和“嫦娥奔月”的故事混淆了。😂
Her palace is called Guanghan Palace 广寒宫

Totally agreed. Humanity working together is nice and all, but human behavior suggests that adding some illogical human emotion to the mix does a space program good.
Better than an arm race for sure.
The automated scoping, mining and return of cool rocks from the far side of the moon to earth is indeed an impressive feat of engineering. Hats off!

The "e" in chang'e is pronounced similar to "er" in British English. More precisely, "Cháng é", as they are both the second tone.
I think- I'm not really sure- but I think that the reason the CNSA keeps calling Lunar modules/ missions by the "Chang'e" designation, is that according to folklore/ mythology, Chang'e was the name of some celestial figure or other, who lived in the moon. Thus, the name would make any/ all of the missions immediately understandable to the Chinese people.
It would be the same as if Jesus was supposed to live on the moon, instead of 'in the clouds' and if NASA called all their moon-missions a variety of "Jesus 1, Jesus 2, etc..."

In terms of safety, traditional launch vehicles are more reliable.

I predicted when starship was announced and the plan to colonize the moon and Mars, that China would soon suddenly step up to meet the challenge. It took a few years, but now it's overly evident China is gunning for the moon, and probably in particular Shackleton crater, which also will be NASA's primary target. Shackleton is absolutely loaded with permanently shaded water ice.
Titan 👌🏻

Not Chang-E but sound like Chang-Eh.
Chang-e(嫦娥) is wife of a hero 'The Archer' (houyi, 后羿) in Chinese myth. She ate all the elixir of immortality her hasband found in end of west land, when a men who envy the hero wanted to rob the elixir. Eat half of the elixir for immoetal and all for being god, so Chang-e flght above toward tian-gong (天宫, palace in sky) (←also the name for Chinese space station). She very miss her hasband so she stay on the moon, where she live is called guang-han-gong (广寒宫, vast&cold palace) or chan-gong (蟾宫, toad palace) (ancient Chinese think moon is avatar of a toad). There's also a rabbit called yue-tu (月兔, moon raabbit) (←also the name for Chinese moon rover) and a man forever choping the sweet scented osmanthus tree called wu-gang (吴刚) living there accoding to Chinese myth.
Well done China on there space program, the lunar lander samples are being studied by Chinese and French scientists with some early results which are extraordinary more to come, Great video as always
Will these countries be sharing scientific knowledge with all of Earth's scientists? If so, I am so happy there is competition to encourage innovation, and more science is being returned to the world
美国有这个技术不需要别人分享,特朗普说了是偷的美国的技术😂
As an european, beetween China and the US, the best is Europe. We Participate to both programs so we will win anyway 🤣
nah, you do what the US tell you to do, as all vassals do. US blows up Nordstream, an act of war, and you just stand there smiling like an idiot while Germany de-industrializes.
The most(maybe the only) amazing thing of the Cold war era was the Space Race!
Well come back shaun
it's funny that these plans are designed about 70 years ago. just completing plans step by step
The US is so far behind now. Unreal
Let's make a BRICS moon Base!!!
China is doing great

Come visit China for a good duration. Your entire assessment will change.
I've been to China six times, totaling about 9 months, for work. I had a great time and totally enjoyed working with my Chinese colleagues. But I was so happy to return to the US every time. I am way to vocal and opinionated for China.
@@davidgmaloofDon't worry, you are not important enough to get the attention of Chinese government 😂😂😂

Don't worry. China will be able to build a permanent Moon base to do year round scientific research there, by earliest 2030.
2030 is just a manned landing on the moon.
Letting only the current world superpowers have access to other planets surely will end well, and not with private property in them that will cause conflict.
Did China ask the bully boy before starting this project, if not then there will be trouble no doubt.
North Korea/DPRK?

Its amazing and sad at the same time ... We ar seeing real progress but also stubbornness between nations.
Disappointingly we wont see joint exploration - imagine the things humans could do!
Right now we seem to be burning money with SpaceX and when you get way down in the weeds in 2024 the vaunted US still has a decommissioning ISS, giant rockets that burn up but in end can't lift the kgs needed and other nations out shinning NASA.
But thankfully we do have innovative smaller companies (see Tenacity) doing great things.
Im no expert just a normal Joe looking on at space exploration with awe and the hopes I will see man living on moon in my lifetime.😊
And the CNSA keeps playing Booster Village Bingo.
In what way do you feel SpaceX is wasting money? Not trolling, I'm genuinely interested in your reasoning. Noone is more disappointed in how the US and NASA failed to build on their success, so I'm very happy to see SpaceX injecting some very much needed momentum in the space race.
@@PersonalityMalfunctioni might suggest its the obsession with huge (too big?) Reusable rockets instead of just getting on with setting up a moon base
@@thefleecer3673 Why so pro China?
and what's with all the form letter posting all over the comments?
@@thefleecer3673 Honestly the development of truly reusable launch vehicles is by far SpaceX's most impressive achievement, which is why China is going to do it also (and are making great strides in doing so). It just makes sense. Imagine how expensive airline flights would be if they threw away the entire airplane after every flight. The same is true for spaceflight, but even moreso and with a much higher dollar amount. Just play Kerbal Space Program and do it yourself, developing a fully recoverable reusable launch vehicle is basically a "never run out of money ever again" cheat code.
But also I do think we should be working with China in exploring space. We should all be communists with a beautiful international glorious communist space program. Competition is not the only way, in fact I believe it's the wrong way. Cooperation will always get us farther than competition ever will, because competition requires losers and only has one winner, whereas cooperation is the mutual pursuit of a win for everyone.
The far side will have more rare minerals
"And I for one welcome our new Chinese overlords" 😆 Seriously though, this makes NASA look a little weak when they were able to send men to the moon but can't do something impressive yet reasonably straight-forward like this. Even India sent a probe. Seems China will be the go-to for small space experiments for a number of nations.
What a strange comment. Are you purposely ignoring all of NASA's scientific accomplishments from the last 30 years, and currently doing, or are you really that ignorant?
@@davidgmaloof There are still two astronauts trapped in space. Why do you fantasize about this? Are you learning from Korea?
@@zhantangbai7295They are not trapped in space. There is multiple other vehicles docked to the ISS that could return them home.
@@thedausthed There are only three ships that can dock with the ISS. Guess it's Russia, or SpaceX $350 million? If there's a space available on one ship, why not come back? Do you think Boeing has a choice? The food is almost gone.
China believes in multi-polarity and win-win cooperation. Unlike the US, they know the futility of hegemony, but US too young as a country to know any better.
Awesome
Too bad our budget is in the unnecessary military instead of advancing technology and making all lives better because of it through space travel. The U.S. is too obsessed with war to realize that going to other planets and moons helps everyone. China will beat us in every way, looks like they actually realize that it's important for our species. Very sad that NASA has to work with such a small budget to get so much done. All of our hope is in Space X now.
Well the current government hates SpaceX. I bet the Chinese government doesn't despise their scientists
China spends about $400B USD adjusted for PPP on its military as well. Imagine what China could accomplish if they didn't support the world's largest military! Interesting for such a humanitarian, you didn't bring any of this up.😏
Lunar warfare 🤔
@@davidgmaloof US - 320 million people; military expenditure: 905 billion

Tbh the nukes and military in the US would be more than enough to defend from any threat
@@benjaminmeusburger4254 I get what you are saying, but calculating military expenditure per capita only makes sense if you plan to turn your military on your own people. There is no way China would ever do that...oh wait... :(
9:07 Endless audio glitches everywhere, so trendy. Please people, make bug announcements when using such buggy software, or it will just get worse.
The United States likes to attribute its internal contradictions to one country. In particular racial discrimination. Black people are not treated equally. The problem is social contribution. The United States does not recognize class issues. I admit, black people are not good at some things. This makes them miserable in the United States, and they have no money to live. When a person has no money to live, it is easy to commit crimes. The United States government is not responsible. In China, the homeless man is trained by the government to find him a job. The poor will be subsidized. There will be fewer vagrants, the crime rate will be reduced, and society will be stable. As a Chinese, I am puzzled by one thing. Isn't it the most basic way for the government to redeem the poor? At least in China. However, it seems that the United States is unwilling to do things without interests. The United States will only weaken slowly, not become great again.
The Rich are plan B when all else fails.
It's pronounced Chang ER, not EE.
China is way ahead in remote control and communication technology. The robotic automatic mission of moon orbit docking and moon samples retrieval is out of this world!
Let the west keep silence of jealousy 😂😂😂
and yet the US with JPL has explored the Solar System almost entirely, far more than all others combined.
You think China is ahead in space robotics? You are so ignorant - bless your heart!
The West have done sample return from a frikkin' asteroid. Having said that, I'd rather there was a little more trust and co-operation and less empiric posturing and tribalism.
