SUV's are for people who used to drive mini-vans but don't want the stigma. Fair enough, there's a market for that but I really don't know why they've come to dominate the automotive industry. Roadsters are FUN!
Test drove the Z4 30i before and after driving a 2019 MX-5. My expressions of the first test drive were positive, it felt fun like my Golf GTI but with more power and topless driving experience. However, in my second test drive it felt like big and clumsy cruiser compared to the MX-5. For pure driving fun I would pick the MX-5 any day, but if you do long trips in your roadster the Z4 is way more comfortable and practical. I want (1) adjustable headrests with neck warmer (2) optional wood on the dash like the M440i has (3) panel to cover the roof like the M440i. Now THAT would be awesome. Not sure why BMW did not put those things into the M40i when it was available on the M440i. I also like the colors that the M440i has too, which look better than the M40i colors IMO. Great review but the opening question about wanting a “aspirational vehicle but dont want an SUV” is a stretch . Comparing the two is comparing apples to oranges. Anyone looking to buy an SUV (or vice versa) would not be looking at this as an optional alternative pick. 🤦♂️. Why not do the review based on the car for what it is (and category), no need to bring SUV’s into the review. Yes SUV’s are taking over sales (look at ford only keeping 1 car the mustang in its lineup) but why go there.
I was seriously considering this car as my long awaited and deserved fun car. I didn’t feel it rode sporty at all and was only steering this “sports” car as there is no manual shift option. It felt like all BMWs I’ve had or driven in the past which is very competent tank-like feel. Not sporty IMHO. I ended up with a true sports car instead which isn’t a premium label but is truly a sorts car - America’s Sports Car - the C7 Corvette. I bought the Grand Sport version which retails for about the same as this Z4, but is so much more car - from the obvious power difference to the true sports car experience I was looking for in a fun car. The value of the car is what Corvette is about too so there was no need to purchase, for $1,000s, the BMW maintenance packages. Never thought I’d own a Corvette but now I’m hooked.

I live a hour away from Greenville South Carolina. I wish I was there when you guys were there. And on January 21 me and my dad will be touring the BMW factory down there. And he thinking of getting a BMW X6 as his next BMW. When the lease on his 2017 BMW 330i x drive comes up on October of 2020.
Was never a BMW fan but the Z4 has always had an iconic and timeless design. 06 models still look new today
Nice ride. Love that sound.
beautiful... I saw one a few months back... I was surprised!
After long time, I enjoyed your review.
Working for “REDLINE”... if u get pulled over by a cop while testing any cars, do you get a ticket? Or they let u slide?
Great review but the opening question about wanting a “aspirational vehicle but dont want an SUV” is a stretch . Comparing the two is comparing apples to oranges. Anyone looking to buy an SUV (or vice versa) would not be looking at this as an optional alternative pick. 🤦♂️. Why not do the review based on the car for what it is (and category), no need to bring SUV’s into the review. Yes SUV’s are taking over sales (look at ford only keeping 1 car the mustang in its lineup) but why go there.
SUV are modern day station wagon mommy mobiles.
I’ve been waiting this since the Supra review 😜
Peter Rice you should’ve checked out like an 08 Z4M Roadster. That would’ve scratched that itch very nicely. Manual only too!
way nicer looking that the supra and it'll have that bmw depreciation unlike the supra so it'll be more attainable for the masses down the road.
