- Let's explore the brand new BMW Z4, the newest generation of the sporty roadster! With an opportunity to drive a high spec Z4 M40i on perfectly suited countryside roads in Portugal, we truly discover everything there is to know about this open-top car.
The new BMW Z4 M40i sits as the flagship in the line-up of 3 models, with a 3.0l TwinPower Turbo flat-6 offering 340hp and 500nm which means 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds with a roof that can open and close on the move in 10 seconds itself. Available only with an 8-speed ZF gearbox it's also a project that's been developed alongside Toyota with their new Supra.
With an opportunity to go into serious detail we can cover all of the elements of the car from a look around the exterior, to fully running through the technology available on the interior. There is of course also the chance to drive it on the roads of Portugal near to Estoril circuit with plenty of time to get to grips and get a real idea of what it's about.

some car manufaturers seem to copy mercedes in their designs.. check out hyundai's genesis g70 and g90 they look exactly like the s class and c class
im not a merc fanboy, in fact merc copies many other cars but its just a thing that im seeing a lot

I wish BMW would stop diluting the ///M brand and only use it on full fledged M models.

Yeah that's why it's m40i, m240i, m340i etc instead of m2 m3 m4 etc. Same as an S4 vs an RS4, I think if there's anybody diluting the sport line that would be AMG.
Yeah so many BMW with small M badges because they have just some M-parts. It gets to common imo
I wish BMW would stop diluting the BMW brand and only use it on good cars. This is a munter and it hasn't an ounce of sports car in it.

I must appreciate for retaining the styling of the car very much true to the concept of the car. By giving good tech and great driving dynamics with the Toyota partnership. I do think BMW have made a worthy successor to the Z4. Great overview Shmee. Shquad!!!!
You did a good job with this video. Thanks for sharing and posting it. One of the best vids on this new BMW so far. I like the looks of body and agree that the soft top doesn't look all that good, but one could live with it. If I ever win the lottery I'd test drive one. :)

I like the looks of this car but i really dislike soft tops i just think it looks weird when its up
yeah the metal roof on the last gen was nice. I dont like rag tops either
I have a first gen Z4, soft top is excellent even at motorway speeds. Metal roof not worth the weight.

i've had all versions of the z4 and for me the best was the previous e89. soft tops just look outdated now with sleek hard top convertibles available from most manufacturers. smee obviously disagrees as he said this one looks better with the soft top lol
Prefer the outside of the E89 model, interior better in new obviously, the m40i should have the 380PS like in US (thanks EU)

I've been in one of these z4's (m40i z4's) in sport + mode, the crackles and pops sound great on this. Also, the inline sounds beautiful.

Thanks for one of the first reviews of the new Z4! It seems it is better than its predecessors in all aspects. And it is the right car for twisty roads at the countryside as well as in some hairpin corners in the mountains while preserving some everyday practicality.Unfortunately, demand for roadsters is diminishing since many years. In addition to that, BMW has just released bad numbers in its quarterly report, so let's see how long the Z4 and its Toyota coupé sibling will be produced on the market...

Braden McHenry a 981 With a six cylinder engine was around 1320kg. 1500kg is on the heavy side for a 2 seater roadster.

Thank you for doing such an in-depth review beautiful car but the one thing that I did notice that they like is cup holders it's just like my 05 530 the cup holders are an afterthought if it has cup holders that's one area BMW likes everywhere else there's superb

No it's not. There's really nothing connecting it to the old school Supra. No 2JZ (improved or not) and no manual transmission either. It's like called a chocolate cupcake a brownie. I wouldn't have a problem with it if they didn't call it the Supra because it really doesn't pay any respects to the previous Supra.
After long time BMW gives us a really good car.

Well the front headlights look similar to the amg gt headlights and the vents on the side of the rear bumper are similar to the ones on the c63. The car still looks good tho.

There will be a coupe option. In german press there were pictures of a camouflaged Z4 M coupe with 4 exhaust tips.
how is the handling of this and mx5 (say ND) would compare (in street driving conditions)?

Hi Tim, welcome back to Sintra. One day, you have to create an event to meet with your portuguese fans. Your videos are great, your content too, but i like to left two personal opinions. The first is the sound, when you test cabrio cars, or when you test cars where the motor sound was very loud, is not easy to ear clearly your voice, maybe try to add a mic. The second, my english is getting better evertime I listen to your videos (thanks for that), but many times you speak so fast thats no easy to understand ;)

Looks good! Just hate that BMW is slapping the M badges on non S type engines but Mercedes does the same with the AMG badge, I guess this replaces “sports edition”

Two comments: nice to see you've got a decent ceramic Daytona at last though I suspect you paid way over the odds for it; secondly, whatever the pundits' comments on this car - and they've been quite rude about it dynamically as a pure sports car - it does one thing 100% better than a 718 Cayman/Boxster - the 6-cylinder NOISE is brilliant - Porsche for god's sake take note.

Toyota said they may be adding the manual in the Supra "if the market requires it", so who knows

It's always funny that so many people judge these cars, but they aren't even in the market for a car like this... The fact that it has Mercedes appearance nodes, is not a bad thing. The new benzo's look great, and this is the BMW version. I think it looks fantastic

The design goes to hell after the you pass the doors. That rounded look on the back doesn't seem to go with the angular front. Reminds me of a Mitsubishi eclipse. The roof line is horrible. BMW sure got away from the long lean look and now it looks like a fat Elvis. No thanks BMW. I'll keep my old one and take a hard look at the new Supra.
